Same old game, more problems...

I must start out that there will never be a RPG game better than the original Baldur's Gate.

The problem here with the sequel is that instead of giving you a quality game, they did what everyone else does in the computer game world and changed it in a bad way. I have no idea where they get the system requirements for this one. I have a brand new system with a voodoo card and the game is very choppy and it sucks. Great, the story line is better and the game is bigger, but it is very frustrating to play whenever combat starts and the screen jumps around worse than the first game.

Give me a break, Bioware. Spend all that time making endless dialogue and new spells and such, but when you take away playability then the thing might as well jump out at me from the screen, because it is still going to be no fun whatsoever to play.

Buy this one only if you have a big money gaming computer and lots of patience, because it will drive you crazy otherwise.

Looks great, gameplay is poor though

Pros
Great graphics
D&D concept
Lots of character choices & development

Cons
Gameplay is annoying from start to finish:-
-- AI is beyond dumb. Characters wander off, attack each other, get lost etc periodicaly (especially annoying as all characters must be close together when changing to a new location, and you realize one ... managed to get stuck 5 minutes walk away)
-- Constant reloads are *unavoidable* hence ruining the atmosphere (you'll reload 100's of times, even on the easiest difficulty -- there is *no* imersion in this 'world' due to this)
-- Many quests involve level draining creatures, requiring you to go alllll the waaaayyyyy back to town for level restoration -- very boring in such a slow travel game (no choice in this, you'll end up losing multiple levels per character until they are all nerfed beyond usefulness halfway through a dungeon
-- Main quest isnt very deep or absorbing (compared to say Arcanum)
-- Spellcasting is very annoying (you have to choose which spells to memorize well in advance of a fight.. again, just encouraging re-loads once you discover what situations you will be facing and realize your current selection are worthless)

Wasn't very happy with this game

After reading all the excellent reviews for this game I thought I would give it a try. After many hours of trying to get myself to enjoy it I just gave up. Now, I know that this is an RPG game, but personally I find the pace of the game to be much to slow compared to some of the other RPG's that I've played in the past. Also, I highly recommend reading the manual before you play or you will be completely lost. I'm sure many of you out there like these challenging games, but I just thought I would give a different perspective about what to expect. Some aspects of the game I DID like are the graphics. Beautiful scenery and settings throughout the game, and some cool effects with certain characters as well. I also liked the opening cutscene. My advise is only buy this game if you are really into RPG's otherwise I would stay away.

OH. MY. GOD.

BG2 is, by far, the best RPG I have ever played, and I've played quite a few. I am tempted to say it is the best computer game I have ever played, and I've been playing since the glory days of Atari.

It's only downside is that it is too good. The temptation is strong once you start playing to renounce all other activity in favor of more BG2. Thank god Throne of Bhaal will be coming out before law school starts up in August, otherwise I might forget to go to class for a month. The development team seems to understand my pain, however. The game reminds you every once in a while to eat and sleep. Sometimes that advice came in handy.

The Best RPG to date

Baldur's Gate 2 is the most incredible RPG game on the market for now. This game beats the original which was a spectacular game into the ground which is really saying something. I played the original and expansion twice through and then started playing EverQuest and then went back to playing this, and let me tell you something if youve ever thought of playing a game like that dont. Games like EverQuest have no plot and get monotonous after a very short period of time stick with RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2.

best game i ever played

Baldur's Gate 1 has always been my most favorite game. No matter how much i looked around for games equally impressive i found none. Than to my satisfaction Baldur's Gate 2 was issued and i immeaditely purchased it. This is the best game i have ever experienced on a pc. The graphics are so real and I love the characters in the game. My advice is to be a fighter for a skill. They are the best at fighting and have high percentage skills. I am currently playing a Kesei Fighter, which is the best character you can be. Well atleast I think so. While mages are powerful, you just run out of spells too often. It was a majot letdown. So go out there and be craftful when picking your character, they do go a long ways with you in the game.

Seeing a 1 star review of this magnificent work of art is enough to make the baby jebus cry. The only consolation I see is that every bad review *seems* to be coming from the point of view of very offbeat gamers with strange tastes.

My background in RPG gaming: Some D&D first edition (way back when), Atari's "Adventure," lol, Zelda (if that qualifies, and we are moving through time here btw, if you hadn't noticed), Final Fantasy series up to 5 (yeah beat me with a stick, I haven't played the best ones yet," Baldur's Gate 1, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind, and I am sure I'm leaving lots out.

Anyways, my conclusion after years of gaming with RPGs, and plenty of other types of games (Age of Empires, Warcraft, Rogue Spear, etc):

Baldur's Gate was the most entertaining single-player game ever made for the PC, UNTIL Baldur's Gate 2, Shadow's of Amn, which from what I've seen so far (and as I said, I play Morrowind, the latest biggie up to this date), holds the throne of all RPG computer games to DATE.

Now lest you think I am just a fanboy of Black Isle Studios (the game's makers), I am not a huge fan of the BG 2 expansion, Throne of Bhaal. Don't get me wrong, I do like the expansion, but it hardly adds a jewel to the crown of BG 2.

Baldur's Gate 2, Shadows of Amn, is, when measured against any other single-player game made for the PC, the single best game ever made up to the date of this post. This is my opinion of course, and I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree with such a strong statement, however I stand by it with all the love I have for PC games, and that's alotta love, ladies and gents.

In other words: I reccomend this game. Big time.

BEST GAME EVER!

Oh man, this beats Torment ,Baldur's Gate ,and Icewind Dale COMBINED!This takes place a few days after the murder of Sarevok. After being in Baldur's Gate for a few weeks, the main charecter(played by you)decided to leave with his party to get out of The Sword Coast (You don't know why).On the way,you get captured by a man named Jon Irenicus. You start in a dungeon, locked up by Jon,then, your old friend Imoen, finds you.You have to break out, find this man,and kill him for all the treachery he has done.

More dark secrets, the dreams are WAY better than the first, great NPC's(my favorite is Yoshimo),and excelent movies.Just a darn good game.I can't wait for Neverwinter Nights!

Truly a masterpiece

A wonderfull game with lots of options and items and quests. Voice acting is very good. Graphics are, well, not 3d, but a very well done 2d, probably best suited for this game. And of course when it came out they were A LOT better. Would recomend this to anyone who enjoys D&D or any kind of RPG. Have fun.

So Worth It!

I bought this game in hopes to measure up to BG1. When I saw the price I thought,"...! geez it's not worth it!" but after I russled up enough money to buy it, I did and played it constantly. It follows thae same basic guidelines as BG1 while going by AD&D 3rd Edition Rules. There is a horendous amount of new and sometimes wierd items. Also, there is a plethora of new and improved monsters throughout the huge and well displayed world of BG2. Like I said, this game is SO worth the money. I recomend it to any RPG-er whether new or old, whether you liked BG1 or not. Enjoy!
