Beautiful, engaging, but sometimes repetitive

The developers did a great job on this game. The levels are beautiful, the level of detail is amazing, and there's plenty to look at without ever getting bored. Nothing is overdone, and everything fits perfectly into the environment. The sounds are perfect, and the music, when it's there, almost fades into the background, it's so perfectly-selected for the environment. Voice acting is superb.

Game play is easy, there are no annoying controls and nothing complicated to remember. Ultimately this is a RPG/shooter. For the most part, you'll do more RPG than shooting. The developers provided a wide variety of different ways to destroy enemies, and you're really left up to your creativity. There are on-screen prompts that help guide you, but more experienced users can turn those prompts off. The game is just challenging enough that you'll never get frustrated and you'll never seem stuck. The maps can be a little confusing at times, but fortunately maps are provided -- I cannot imagine completing this game without them!

The game suffers from a few flaws which appear in the level called "Fort Frolic". There are some frame-rate issues and jumpiness here, which seems to clear about 2 levels later. Consult official forums for discussions, although there appears to be no solution for any problems. Just be prepared for possible jerkiness mid-game and you'll be fine.

The Xbox 360 achievements seem to be well-designed and thought-out. If you blast through the game, you'll miss them. If you take your time and see everything there is to see in the city of Rapture, you'll get most of the achievements on your first play, although it will take quite some time to complete. However, this game is not meant to be played quickly.

Replay value for me is mixed. There is an "evil" track and a "good" track, which only determines which ending you will see. You can experiment with different "weapons" and "abilities" (called plasmids and tonics), and make the game much harder for yourself depending upon what you do. But I believe if you play the game thoroughly once, there is very little reason to play more than twice. Online play is not valuable for me, and the lack of online play does not bother me.

I judge a game by how deeply I am pulled into the game's world. Bioshock has some scary moments -- when you least expect something to happen, something happens! If you are playing this game and somebody walks into the room, you will probably jump, as I have. For me, it means I'm totally engrossed in the environment, and that the developers have done an excellent job at creating an alternate world. The visuals, characters, controls, sounds, and story are fantastic. If it weren't for some glitchiness in the middle of the game, this would garner 5 stars.

Stunning

Unlike anything else I have played, this game is flawless in everything from gameplay to the incredible visuals; The developing powers are fun to use and the whole 'retro yet futuristic' feel reminds me of everything from 'The Shining' to 'Silent Hill'; Everything great you have read about this game is true, so I will spare you a long review. Let's just say this is a beautiful and jaw-droppingly great game. A new standard for art direction, that's for sure!!!! A must for any collection, no matter what your genre favorites are!

A masterpiece

This game moved at an amazing rate while combining some incredible cinematic techniques throughout the story. As the player you find yourself figuring out puzzles, using your tools to destroy enemies and taking advantage of the environment to get a hold on enemy territory. Not only do the graphics impress, but this game uses classical compositions in some horrific sequence of zombies and gunfire; adding a sort of acquiescence or harmonic peace to even the most dangerous areas.

Best SCI-FI / Horror Shooter to date!

Excellent first person shooter (FPS), but guns are only part of what makes you deadly in this game! I have not been creeped out more by a game's world than back when Resident Evil was first released. Graphics are beautiful and spooky. The sound is excellent. Controls are very smooth and intuitive. Highly recommended for fans of SCI-FI or Horror shooters!

This is by far the best FPS I have ever played! I couldn't believe how great the storyline was. The graphics were outstanding and I never experianced one single glitch during gameplay. This game is so good that not only did my wife let me play it for hours on end, but she actually sat there and watched! By the way, this game is actually quite lengthy. I was surprised, most of the FPS I've played lately were just too short. This game doesn't have that problem.

Great shooter with depth and detail

Just recently I purchased the Xbox 360 and was looking for a few really good games. I purchased the Bioshock PC version for my home computer but the game played very slow and the performance was lacking, just to have it somewhat decent I had to lower the resolution. This was a disappointment because I was very interested in the story line.

When I saw that the reviews for the Xbox 360 version were very good, I made the purchase and found it was indeed a great game. For people new to Bioshock the game is a first person shooter style game with added details such as power ups you find and weapon modifications. You can choose your path on the power ups called plasmids, which gives you a chance to play different styles. If you prefer to play with the stealth style, go for the electric bolt and increased wrench power. If you like hacking, then go for the hacking increase. This really gives the game more playability after you finish it to try another solution or method. The game is close to the older PC game, System Shock where you play in a similar area in space instead of under the sea.

The game has a great feel, the levels are done very well, including all of the details, especially the music. Most of the levels are art deco styled, with a great selection of music playing from the correct era of 1920~1950's. Each level is also in somewhat disarray, with boxes, trashcans, corpses that you can search for money, food, etc. The characters are also done well, many of them are mutated and disfigured but still hold on to a bit of humanity.

As for game play there's many choices how to defeat the people or splicers as they are called. You can use your power ups or simply shoot them, the power up method is the fastest and should get you used to fighting when the Big Daddies come around. The game does not appear to be a creepy or scary as Resident Evil, Silent Hill or FEAR. There were very few "jump out at you" parts and most of the time you could hear the characters well before you saw them. This was a good point as it prepares you and allows you to choose the method you will use.

Overall I really enjoyed this game, felt it was worth the amount they are asking. The story line was actually decent for a video game, graphics are well done and the game play worked well. It's rare to find a first person shooter with much if any depth and this was a nice change. I took about 25 hours to complete the game which I felt was good, a more experienced player would have completed this much faster.

Something else that I really like about this game is the helpful quest arrow to show you the direction you should be heading. Also the "hints" that will show you were to go if you get stuck. Even for a causal gamer as myself I didn't feel like any part I was stuck or lost.

My only complaint about the game was the ending. Personally I think it's on par with other video game endings but just felt really short to the very interesting story line. Hope they come out with a Bioshock 2 soon.

I moved from an xbox to an xbox 360 last winter. As a casual gamer, other than Gears of War, I've been largely disappointed with the selection of games available. After hearing the positive reviews for this game, I bought it and have been amazed. Great fun, great graphics. A must buy.

This game is awesome! But too Short!

We loved this game. The only thing wrong with it, it was too short! We finished it in about a week. We had a lot of fun with it though.

This is by far the best single player game of all time. The graphics are amazing. The story line is one of the best i have seen yet. The characters are unique and very cool looking. The strategy used in the game makes the game more fun and entertaining. New types of using weapons are very cool and different. Basically everything about this game is great except one thing. The glitches are bad. By that i mean i have heard quite a few people have glitches in their games form reviews and buddies. I also had a problem with a glitch where a guy i needed to kill flew out of the map and never came back so i was not able to advance. That flaw will not change my desicion on this game. It is by far one of the greatest games ever created at the time.

Best FPS since DOOM

I'm the type of guy who isn't really into shooting endless amounts of zombies for hours and hours.
The standard "survival horror" games never really did it for me.
And I despise, absolutely despise, games where you spend 99.9% of the time in a dark room listening to dripping water looking for a key that will open some door to some room where you have to repeat the process all over again.

Keeping that in mind, when one of my best friends starting raving about BioShock and then sent me the trailer for the game, I immediately thought "yep $10 says it's one of 'those' games".

I can not even begin to say how glad I am that I was wrong.
I can not think of a single FPS with as detailed an environment and engaging story.
The plot twists and turns are as exciting and unexpected as anything on LOST, and the way your choices impact the story is truly impressive.
If you don't own this game already, invest now! You won't regret it.
