Poor, poor Alice. Your parents killed in a fire, you are now trapped in an insane asylum with only your madness to keep you company. Even your dreams of Wonderland have become corrupted by a fractured mind, old friends becoming terrifying menaces and familiar places now dank and mysterious. What was once a place of wonder now becomes a life-threatening journey into your own psychosis.
Clever, wicked Alice, filled with malice, to bring all your new toys into Wonderland with you. From the simple knife (for hacking or throwing) to a lethal deck of cards to an explosive Jack-in-the-Box to the devastating Blunderbuss, the array of toys with which you defend yourself is simply delightful, in a dangerous sort of way. Your foes are many, and of a wide variety, including the brutish Card Guards, malevolent chess pieces, frightful Imps, a giant Mad Hatter, the twisted Jabberwock, and even the Red Queen herself. It's a good thing that you came to this new Wonderland prepared for some deadly play. There is much of it to be had.
But, dear Alice, don't you know that all your old friends are here as well? There's the old Rabbit, of course, as obsessed as ever with his pocket watch and his tardiness. And the Caterpillar, who seems to have descended further into his own addictions. And even the dear Cheshire Cat is here, accompanying you on your journey always ready to offer his toothsome grin and a word of wry advice. Your friends may be a little more twisted, a little more frightening than before, but they're all still here. At first, anyway.
This isn't the Wonderland you once knew, Alice. It has become beautiful and terrible in your absence. Once-peaceful landscapes are now frightening and treacherous, slightly maddening in their off-kilter perspective. Voices, once comforting and friendly, are now laced with a tone of threat and malice. Music, once sprightly, is strange and otherwordly. You must be constantly aware of your surroundings, as you can be suddenly attacked from almost anywhere.
This is a fight for your sanity, Alice. For your very life. Be careful, be strong, be brave... and you may just escape this strange new Wonderland with your mind intact.

My brother, whom is very morbid, gave this game to me when I got my computer. I fell in love with American Mcgee's Alice. The way that all the character's looks are twisted to nightmarish quality makes this game unique in that it takes a childrens fairy tale and makes it into an adult fantasy land. The weapons were awesome and inventive: like the jacks, dice, and cards. When Alice comes across some red potion, it sprays in her face and she makes an anquished sound and turns evil, horns and all. This allows you to have extra power for a short period of time. The levels are complex and long to an extent. If you are not using cheat codes, it takes a while to beat one level. With the cheat codes you can become invincible, have every weapon and use it endlessly, and can float through walls to see the traps that are set for you. The Queen of Hearts is a disturbing image of what she is usually depicted and the graphics of the last level are just awesome. It would probably be impossible to beat the last level without cheatcodes. All in all, this is one of the best computer games that I have ever played, and I look forward to any other games that American McGee's comes up with.

I have played "Alice" many times and all I can say is that it's the most brilliant PC game American McGee has ever created. Every element of the game has been carefully studied and designed specifically for the Victorian era, a time when mentally ill patients were shackled to the walls, locked away in padded rooms and drugged with strychnine. As said in the prologue, Alice has spent 10 years in Rutledge Asylum after her family was tragically killed in a fire. When the White Rabbit calls her back for help, Alice returns to restore both her sanity and the childhood dreamworld she visited years before. But when she gets there, it isn't the same Wonderland; it has been taken over by the Queen of Hearts. The heavily detailed graphics assemble a fantastic yet sinister world where mushrooms are as tall as trees, books float high in mid-air, and staircases are in-between ceilings and floors. Plus, Alice carries an array of toys that have now become destructive weapons: they include a sharp butcher knife, a deck of cutting cards, a croquet mallet and a Jack-in-the-Box that spews out explosive balls of fire. The dialogue and storyline are quite solid, so a player is always interested in what Alice will find around the corner, in the next round. The game, as a whole, has the feel of a Tim Burton production, with Alice facing creepy cariacatures of what her once-beloved dream companions have become: the Cheshire Cat has a toothy grin and a pirate's earring, the Tweedles have become grossly overweight bullies, the Duchess cooks and eats any living thing she can get her hands on, and the Mad Hatter performs mechanical experiments on the March Hare and Doormouse! If that wasn't horrible enough, the wicked Queen of Hearts herself lives in a castle made of bone, pulsating muscles and veins...as if her entire kingdom has become one gigantic parasite feeding off of Wonderland's life force! I would like to tell you more, but I don't want to give too much away, just buy the game and see for yourself. Right now, Wes Craven is directing a film version of this same game, with McGee as producer, and the movie will be around sometime this year or in 2004. It's supposed to be a live action movie with computer effects similar to "What Dreams May Come," and either Milla Jovovich or Eliza Dushku are rumored to be the starring role. If you don't believe me, it says so on American McGee's official website. Keep your fingers crossed!

Beautiful graphics wasted on what is fundamentally a Nintendo game from the early 90's: all you do is run, jump, get power-ups, kill monsters. I appreciated the concept, the insanity and twisted dark world these folks (EA) have created, but their talent would have been better applied to a less linear, more intelligent gameplay design.
Absolutely engrossing.

A masterpiece. Every aspect of the game - music, sound, graphics, mood, gameplay, story - is top notch. American McGee has captured Alice's insane wonderland and made it that much more so. The quake 3 engine has never looked so good. Move over Lara, Alice is here.

I have to say that I am judjing this game from the demo. This game has some of the best graphis that I have ever seen. The fire looks great and the swaying clocks look extremely real. One thing I just have to bring up is that I do not think that it is all that viloent, and it recieved a "m". Another wierd thing its that whenever you kill a card it always gets cut in the same place, no matter where you attack it. I is also cheap how when your your enemies die they shrink and dissapare. The sound is great and the music is scary. Overall it is a good game.

I'm a big fan of Alice in wounderland and this game is one of the best action adventures I've ever played. This game has it all Puzzles, action, beautiful graphics, awsome sounds and music. The over all level design was created with the Quake engine, So the action is fast and intence. The only down side is for those of you out there will slow PC's. This games min. requirments are PII or better 400mhz 128megs or ram and you just cant get the full experience with out a good sound card, 5.1 surround is the best. But if you can run this Gladiator of games then no doubt about it, BUY IT. You wont be sorry.

after i found an advertisement in my email inbox, i fell in love and HAD to get my hands on a copy. luckily, my girlfriend found me a copy as it was sold out during the holidays, and i got it as a present.
this game acts as the third and final book of Alice's stories, and is damn well constructed. you're Alice, stuck in a coma at a mental hospital after a fire destroyed your home, your family, and your skin. you're beckoned one final time to the now insanely demented & psychadelic Wonderland. your only friends are a knife & the familiar disgruntled grin of the chesire cat. you must overthrow the Red Queen and everyone who has now turned against you...all so you can come out of your coma...
ALICE is definitelty not intended for children, as it may give bring their own nightmares of Wonderland in their slumber. the ingredients of this game are violence, gore, logic, and a sharp eye.
American McGee's ALICE is definitely an instant classic among gamers. live the legend. and finish it.

This ain't no Disney Alice.
Take good long look at the cover of Alice's box. Get the idea? Something has gone horribly wrong in Wonderland. Alice, who has spent the last several years in an asylum for telling people the truth (about Wonderland), now must return and again set things right.
Simple enough plot, right? It is. VERY simple.
All three of stars I gave this game were for its visuals. Everything from the backgrounds, the baddies, and the buildings to Alice herself are rendered beautifully! Movement is very fluid and realistic.
I was also suprised at the ease of the keyboard/mouse interface. It didn't take long to get the hang of moving Alice around in the twisted Wonderland.
But these two pluses don't make up for the game itself. This one is a simple "run, jump, shoot" game like all too many others. The game leads you by the nose as you stumble through the plot. Not too many surpises here. For those of you who've played them before, this is one of those: I need X, so I see person 1 who will give me X if I get him Z. So I see person 2 who will give me Z if I give him Y. So I find person 3 who... you get the picture.
The puzzles are easy enough, and there's a lot of jumping involved in this game. But once you get down how to jump, sidestep, and shoot... it's all too easy.
OH! I would be remiss if I didn't note: If your PC (no Mac support from EA, kiddies!) isn't TOP OF THE LINE (Pentium 3, 128MB RAM, geForce 256 video card, Creative x-gamer LIVE sound - or better on all) the game will bog down, graphics won't render, or it won't run at all. Don't even think about running this game on a laptop.
While I liked the game and love the graphics, I was still disappointed. If you want to be scared by a video game, play Resident Evil. If you want great action, play DeusEx.

The poor Reverend himself must be wailing from heaven for someone to stop ripping to shreds his beloved masterpiece. The well-meaning, shy, Christian author has had his work both praised and butchered throughout the decades, but never before have I ever encountered such a thorough and tasteless job (no wonder the C.S. Lewis estate is so notoriously protective! Can you imagine this happening to "Narnia"?!). First of all, I'll just say this for the concept--it WOULD have been VERY possible to do an ultracool and psychedelic action game of Alice without resorting to the cheap shock tactics McGee pours on here. He obviously got so carried away with the fact that he *could* do this that he didn't stop to think about whether he *should*. I'm not going to go into some long discussion on violence and inappropriate material in videogames, I'm just going to say that first off I think it stupid that the press is praising this game and treating it off the bat as though it were a "long lost" chapter of Lewis Carroll's work just now brought to light. Modern alternative audiences love the idea of a nightmarish Wonderland, and the attitude right now seems to be that this game is automatically a classic simply because it's a version so many out there want made. And all without respect to Carroll's memory or personal feelings. But enough of all that, as I certainly don't need to say any more. The important thing to get to here is the gameplay: strip away the shock factor of seeing Alice's Wonderland twisted into a nightmarish freakout and you'll find that the whole concept is just meant to add interest and flavor to what is in reality a stupid videogame. There's not a single element, control or weapon here that hasn't been done before and better in other videogames such as Mario 64 and even Doom and Quake themselves! Take a close look at the review of PC Gamer's opinion and you'll notice what they are really praising is the attitude and visuals but weren't impressed by the gameplay itself, and that's because the game's physical structure is completely unoriginal. The controls are terrible and clumsy, the weapons are simply dolled-up versions of weapons done before, and the art design is simply a Tim Burton ripoff. It's ludicrous to say that this game is anything else other than a mere reflection of McGee's own personal tastes and whims. A complete waste of time and an insult to a beloved childhood memory at the same time, it's guaranteed to infuriate both Lewis Carroll admirers and bore action gamers. All in all, no matter how you choose to look at it, a bad idea.
