American McGee's Alice

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 5
Date: August 14, 2001

I didn't find that American McGee's Alice lived up to all it seemed to be on the box cover. The character is hard to control, the clues are very vague, and the gameplay can be really slow, even interrupted if there is too much action on the screen at once. I'd spend my gaming dollars somewhere else...

We Love "Alice"

I saw this game sometime earlier this year, and now that I finally got a computer I bought the game without knowing if my system could support it. "Alice" has so much to offer. The graphics are amazing and it's Wonderland. I should also note that the voice acting is top notch. Alice is just too much! Gameplay is fantastic too. I had never touched a PC game before and I got right into this one. And the controls can be switched around to fit your personal needs. The only problem I have is my computer. When Alice gets attacked...the game almost freezes. Ohh-my poor computer. But I still love playing it! If you are a fan of Tim Burton, have a wicked sense of humor, or are a fan of the book(not any of the movies...the book), then at least give this a try. It is fabulous.

Great twist, impossible missions

I enjoyed being submerged within the twisted fantasy of the game wizards whom created this game. The eerie gameplay and dimented creatures spawned from within the story of "Alice In Wonderland" kept me going. The game contained superb graphics and sound effects, as well as great "not too impossible to defeat" creature effects, as well as deadly childhood play toys used to dispose of undesireables. The downside is that with all the great characteristics of the game, it was not the wrongheaded minions of the "Queen Of Hearts" that vexed me, it was the all but entirely unachievable stages. Honestly at times I felt like opening the "Read Me" file of the program just to discover the identity of the guy whom developed the levels of "Alice." (They asked the impossible.) If I had not learned of the console codes available for the game (GODMODE) I would have never completed "Alice." (I know, I'm a cheat, but try completing a level from start to finish over twenty times with no prevail and see your reaction!) There is no savegame within the levels so when you "pass on," you start over. (Some stages are unbelievably long as well.) I give credit for the great sound and surroundings, but some levels are more difficult than trying to span the grand canyon with a length of thread.

All Style, No Substance

While the thought of playing a psychopathic twisted horror version of Alice in WOnderland appealed to me at first, it quickly became tiresome. Surely the original story is twisted and psychopathic enough and this version tries very hard to disturb players but it's plot just goes nowhere.

When I loaded up this game I expected some sort of stunning adventure, only to be greeted by what seemed to be a first-person action game, such as Thief or Unreal...but no...it wasn't that either. It was 3rd person in the style of Tomb Raider.

As I started meeting NPCs I realized where I've seen this interface before:games like Banjo Kazooie, Spyro the Dragon, Zelda and other N64 and Playstation platform adventure games...which is just what Alice is...a spooky platform game.

Platform games being what they are, they are obsessed with coming up the most difficult way for the player to jump from point a to point b so that you can then get on with the story. After the 23rd time of falling off the checkerboard, you finally make it and are allowed to proceed with the story. But what story? There isn't a very strong one. You are just lead by the nose and it isn't even very interesting. Just lots of fighting cards and flying spectre things.

I must admit this game IS indeed visually stunning. I absolutely love the cheshire cat. He floats in and ouut of the game quite eerily and his voice is perfect. The scenery and odd backgrounds of vortexes, huge stacks of books, and such are used to try and make the player a bit uncomfortable or spooked and yes they do their job...but in the process, though, we are not given anything interesting or challenging to do except for jumping from point a to point b 23 times.

I was very disappointed with the "puzzles" presented. Nothing was really a challenge but merely an entrance to the next test of patience.

To give the game credit, the graphics are impeccable, the gameplay (running, jumping, etc) is flawless and easy to pick up, and the mechanics of the game flow very smoothly. It's just a pity that the creator saved all the fun for himself.

Well done but tiresome game

This game is designed for people who like to slice and dice their way through to the end. It is bloody and twisted. If that is the type of game you like then what are you waiting for? However, if you like games that have more of a plot to them (or any plot) and try to appeal to your intellect even a little then avoid this one. I'm not saying the game is bad. It's not. In fact, technically, it's superb. But if you don't go for this type of game then you will be disappointed. Also, the hardware requirements are rather steep. Mega amounts of RAM, a special high end video card and over 500MB of hard disk space are required.

Atmosphere

I admit it, I'm a sucker for atmosphere. Any game that can pull me in so well that it affects my mood, fully engrossing me in the game, is a winner in my book, and Alice does exactly that. Every detail of the game comes together perfectly to create a dark, insane world that seemed very real, making me care about the characters and want to keep exploring a little further.

The game does have a few shortcomings. The linear gameplay and lack of multiplayer support leaves it with very low replay value. I finished it in about 2 weeks and have not played it since. Also, the gameplay itself isn't much different from many other games on the market. Overall, though, if you're tired of the slew of unoriginal games being released these days, Alice will be a refreshing break for you.

Very intriguing storyline and advanced graphics, but...

slightly monotonous in gameplay. I loved this game, but it was kind of boring just to kill all of the enemies. What happened to her blonde hair? It turned red and then brown, guess it's from all of the dirt she didn't wash off during her stay at the asylum. Very interesting storyline, as I have mentioned previously. You'll find the characters very likable or very unpleasant, no inbetweens I guess. There is a bit of strategy to the game when it comes to defeating the Duchess, Caterpillar, Jabberwock, and so on. It takes a bit of patientience sometimes, but the graphics make it very worthwhile. It's not a very difficult game to play. It does require some thinking in some levels to get onto the next part, but I'm sure you'll manage. Forty dollars isn't bad for the price of this game, because as I said the graphics make it worthwhile. The gore is not that bad, but it can sometimes be, well, a bit, how should I say-- grotesque? if that's the right word. Whacking at the cards will be great fun and very satisfying if you might be anything like me... Don't be disappointed when you can't beat the monsters like the Jabberwock and leave the game to rot. Patience and perserverance is the key. Well, I suppose I've wasted too much of your time now. Do go buy this game and make me happy.

Beautifully boring

Definitely one of the most visually astounding games I've ever seen. The graphics designers on this one really had their act together. But the game/play designers were rather uninspired.

The most complicated puzzles amount to jumping puzzles (probably the most annoying type of puzzle ever created, thank you Nintendo). Every level has at least one jumping based puzzle (luckily the ice board is mercifully short).

If this game is on sale I would recommend it just for the visual pleasure of it. The drive to see what's around the corner is often enough to keep you moving. It is a highly imaginitve game, with numerous tidbits of humor. For instance, if you let Alice stand still for a while, she has a different set of "waiting" animations for each weapon (some are pretty funny).

However, if you're looking for a fast paced shooter, get Half-life: Counterstrike and go online.

Alice is Back

When i got this game, I knew it would scare the guts out of me. And it did. That case book it had in the place of a manual was imaginitive, in a twisted way. This game uses gothic terror manipulation, meaning everything and everybody, including the good guys, have a twisted/demonic appereance. American McGee has taken the oddness of the world in Lewis Carol's Alice in Wonderland, and has expressed its weirdness on the exterior too. You know those movies The Cell,Monkey Bone and Indiana Jones? Its like a mix of those times a million. If you thought Fallout, or They Hunger, or Hosue of the dead, or whatever where scary and weird, THIS my freinds well make you pee in your sad little pants! So watch out, cause The Dutchess, Cenipede, Red King, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, Mad Hatter, Jabberwok, and the most twisted of all, Queen of Hearts, are comming to not only to make you lose your Sanity, but also to make you lose your head (litterally). I can offically say that a masterpeice and a nightmare have become the same thing. Sweet DREAMS....

Excellent Game

This is truly an excellent game! Small Spoiler - I am about halfway through the game, and from what I can tell, the returning characters are - (good) The Cheshire Cat, The White Rabbit, The Caterpillar, Hare, Rat (from the tea party), and (bad), The Cards, Twedildee and Twedildum, The Mad Hatter, and The Queen of Hearts. Also, some new characters that weren't in the movie - The Duchess, The Centipede, Gryphon, and The Jabberwock (from the book). I'm not sure this is complete. -End of spoilers-The game it self has gorgeous graphics, amazing game play, a great unfolding story line, and comes in seven colorful, non kid friendly flavors! :) Like I said, this game is not for kids. It has violence, gore, and deals with psychological problems Alice is dealing with. However, this game is not overly scary. It does have a few points ware it can give you a fairly good shock, (but most of the shocks come from the many, many, cinema tics). If you are looking for a scary game, you could play this in your room at night, with your door locked, and a metronome ticking in the corner. That would do it. You get a number of toys, which are actually weapons. This is a great long game. When I first bought this I was skeptical, but now I realize what a good game this is!
