I origionally heard about AmericanMcGee's ALICE in an older PC Gamer mag that was doing interviews w/ several known game programmers. McGee and his ALICE being one of the spotlights.

Origionally the game didnt interest me until months later when I saw it on the shelf, and without thinking twice drew my credit card and swiped away what has become the best $40 I have spent in a while. Anyways, here's what I've found about the game, but first, my system specs: ------------ p4-1.3ghz 128mb 800mhz RDRam Turtle Beach Santa Cruz THX2 compatible sound GeForce 2 GTS 32mb DDR AGP video ------------

The game started out wirh an incredible movie to set the scene, followed by the immediate beginning of the gameplay. Sort of a tutorial by the Cheshire Cat. I had no trouble learning how to play as I just instated my controls that ive been using for years with the Quake series.

I found the Movement to be a bit clumbsy, but i cant expect it to move exactly like a first person shooter... since ALICE is in 3rd person. I found the game to be an incredible blend of action, adventure, and story.

The graphics were absolutely amazing!! I run it at 1024x768, highest texture detail, and 32bit color depth with almost no frame rate slow downs, but im sure thats due to the system specs.

I have been playing like a a jonsin' crackhead for a couple days now.. at least when i can after work and all that good stuff, and I have almost nothing but great things to say about this game. But, I did find a couple things that dont realy affect me due to my system specs, but I thought I'd pass along to the new buyer.

ALICE, although seeming to be flawless all around, seems to take AGES! to load from level to level on my high end system, and I came straight out and said to my friend who was sitting behind me "I'd hate to see the load times on your system(k-6 2 450mhz). i normally had to wait a min or 2 for each level to load on my 1.3ghz system, what would it be like on an average system? I dont know, but I can sure say that I wouldnt wanna find out. That so far has been the only thing I have found to pass on about this game on the bad end.

Over All, American McGee's Alice is an incredible piece of work, and coming from a hardcore QUAKEsterbator, I can tell all of you that this game does provide a good challenge, as well as plenty of action to keep gamers that are used to fast-paced quake-style action entertained!

4 out of 5 stars only because I have to think of the average end user not having the system i have for doing my 3d graphics rendering. But I'd be willing to wait the load times for the amazing gameplay.

Fun for wusses, too

Okay, I'm not a typical gamer. I don't like things chasing and attempting to kill me - that's way too stressful. That being said, I do enjoy creative storylines, gorgeous graphics and clever characters.

When my dad recommended I play Alice, I was hesitant because I knew it was a little gory and violent and creatures would attempt to kill me. But then I discovered "God" mode, and all I can say is "Hallelujah!" Playing Alice this way eliminated most of the stress but still allowed me to enjoy the game and its puzzles. And you're not invincible - you can still fall off ledges on some levels causing your character to die. But the creatures in the game can't kill you, so that was the plus for me. For anyone like me who isn't into combat-style games but would like to give Alice a go, I recommend playing in God mode. Check out the Internet for directions on how to do this and good luck! You won't be disappointed!

Just Awesome

I think American McGee's Alice is one of my all time favorite games. It has lush, dark, beautifully rendered settings. It has interesting and graphically compelling characters and a good backstory. Granted it is not for the kiddies but that this is made for us older gamers is just another plus in my book. I was drawn into Alice's world within minutes of starting play. If you have played Clive Barker's Undying and enjoyed that then you will probably love Alice. It edges out Undying a bit in my book in areas of ease of game play and coolness of weoponery but it is atmospherically similar. In terms of comments on difficulties with movement I have yet to find a game that didn't have places where the movement was tricky or unpredictable. I didn't notice any really bad or overly annoying problems in Alice myself.

Still A Masterpiece In My Eyes

American Mcgee's Alice is and always will be a legend. i was 10 when my brother got this game and even 6 years later it's the one game i own that gets the most play time on my computer which is a severly out dated dell running windows 98. it had the best graphics and music for it's time i'd say. i've never really been one for the third person adventure genre seeing as i'm a die-hard RPG guy. and coming from me that means it's an amazing game. i'd say that if this game has interested you get a copy. it's worth it. and chances are you going to love it. i've gotten everyone in my computer club to play this game and they loved it. give it a try

A rare combination of a great storyline and graphic beauty

This is not the Walt Disney(c) verion of Alice, but neither is it a simply cheap hit at making a children's story into a nightmare. It can, however, be disturbing so it's not for young kids.

Warning--some storyline spoilage follows, but just the setup.

The story begins that as a young girl, Alice awakes to find the house on fire. Her parents yell for her to escape which she does, but they perish and she blames herself. Years later as a teenager, she is in a mental ward because she cannot deal with the guilt of not being able to save her parents. The Rabbit comes to her asking for her help as the Red Queen with the Mad Hatter has taken over Wonderland and they need her to save it.

Wonderland is haunting and surreal and the "toys" Alice carries are twisted versions of their former selves and are actually weapons.

The storyline is dark, but the graphics are superb. The Pool of Tears is beautiful as is the world of the White Kingdom (which is all in shades of black and white). Alice is helped along with the aid of the Cheshire Cat who gives cryptic clues to puzzles. It's a combination puzzle solving and shooter. There's a lot of running and jumping so all of your gaming skills are tested. The music is also original and haunting.

But the best thing about it is the evolving storyline, which delves into guilt and a person's tenuous grasp on mental health, is much deeper than any other game I've played.

Short but great!

OK, so this game is linear and has little replay value. I have a job and a family, and don't have time for that stuff anyway. This game is easy to get into, you can play it for short runs at a time, and the scenery and psychedelic tone is candy for the brain, eyes and ears. That's all I ask, and this title delivers.

An absolutely gorgeous PC platformer

American McGee's Alice is a blend of a PC shooter and a console platformer. Like a first person shooter, you are given a large arsenal of very different weapons and plenty of enemies to use them on. Like a platformer, the levels have lots of maneuvering challenges, requiring exploration and a lot of accurate jumping. While this gives the game a fresh feel on the PC, it also causes some headaches.

Basically, PC controls are really not well suited for a game that emphasizes accurate jumping and nimble movement. Jumping especially is quite unpredictable. The developers have implemented a feature that allows for accurate jumping, but it doesn't work in many instances. The inconsistent controls don't overwhelm the game, but they can be a source of frustration.

Another point of concern is that the game is single player only and relatively short. The game is very linear and replay value is limited. Once I finished the game, I had very little reason to play it over, except maybe to explore the levels more thoroughly.

The level design is really where this game shines. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous and the levels are clever and original. The game is so stylish and compelling visually that you will want to keep playing just to see what the next level looks like. On quite a few occasions, I was completely stunned at how unique and basically how cool the levels were. I simply cannot overstate how immersive the visuals are, but the whole ambiance of the game is superb. The sounds, music and voice acting are all extremely high quality and contribute greatly to the mood of the game.

The bottom line is that Alice is an extremely immersive experience. Whatever gameplay shortcomings the game has are more than compensated for by the style and presentation. Its important to keep in mind that this is a mature-themed game. McGee's Wonderland is a far cry from the psychedelic happy-go-lucky land of Disney fame and is really not suitable for certain audiences. But if you're looking to be absorbed into a thoroughly compelling world, Alice is the game for you.

Breathtaking

This title has single-handedly revived my waning interest in the current PC game offerings. It was an impulse purchase for me - I had only been told by a friend that I should "check it out" during a brief conversation. Right from the opening credits I was hooked. The artistry, maturity, continuity of style, and emotional evocation that "Alice" brings to the genre is quite stunning.

Graphically, it is unparalled at present - I have yet to see another more visually impressive title. On my PII-400 and 3Dfx Voodoo 5500, the effects and fluidity of motion in 32-bit color and at resolutions in excess of 1024x768 amazed me. Even at lower resolutions this is a magnificent piece of level design, texture artistry, and 3D modeling. The music and EAX2 sound effects are chilling and disturbing on my quad speakers - and the most wonderful surprise - the voice acting is superb. A little over the top at times, but even that fits in with Alice's twisted wonder-landscape. The hairless, tattooed Chesire Cat that serves as your guide is wonderfully creepy.

The action is less frenzied than say, the excellent Unreal Tournament, or other shooters, but I don't think it was meant to be. I think it's strikes a great balance between combat gamplay, puzzle solving, and exploration/discovery. Just picking up the croquet mallet for the first time is sheer joy in itself as the Cat materializes and says: "Here's a riddle for you...when is a croquet mallet like a billy club? I'll tell you! Whenever you want it to be..." and recedes into the darkness, teeth glinting and eyes glowing.

The puzzles are sometimes overly simple, but they are never frustrating or stumping, which is good when the real gameplay comes through as exploratory - the biggest thrill (and apprehention!) is discovering the next complelling and odd corner of Alice's world.

It's not perfect, maybe, but it's definitely one of those must-have titles because there's nothing else quite like it. Fans of almost any genre will appreciate this in some way or another. Play it alone in the dark and see if it doesn't have you looking over your shoulder with it's "Salvador Dali meets H.G. Giger meets the Twilight Zone" eerie style. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Aging eye candy, but what a DEAL!

This is one of the most visually pleasing games I have ever played. I don't usually like jumping games, but for this game I've made an exception. The game is quite surreal, and very dark. The toys (read weapons) Alice uses are very imaginative, and if you don't move Alice for a while she'll run an animation associated with the toy she's currently wielding. It's Alice in Wonderland for grownups. You can't beat the price, so if you have the system to run it, buy the game.
