This game is amazing in the graphics and sound department, allwing it to be rather freaky (altough I still find System Shock 2 more scary - I know, its an old game). It's scary for your machine in that, if you try to run it at full effects and resolution, your machine is probably trying maddly to keep up.
For all you who played this in its original iteration of Doom, then there should be some nostalgic moments for you, but dont expect the game to be a complete remake.
I give it five stars.

Let's face it, guys: The single-player first person shooter genre is dead. It didn't have to die, but titles like Doom 3 are what killed it.
The original Doom was impressive from a technical standpoint, but more importantly, there was actual gameplay there. There were decisions to be made by the player, and skill involved in navigating and fighting in a first person environment. If you didn't use your head you'd lose it. Doom 2 was more of the same, but we were all so in love with the first game that nobody cared. Ignoring all other games for a moment, fast forward 11 years and what do we get for a sequel to the greatest action game of all time?: The same game with better visuals and slow, boring, repetitive, tedious "gameplay."
There simply is no reason to play Doom 3. It's yet another title where the player is dragged by the nose through a story no one could care about, stopping to shoot things along the way. The game world is supposed to be scary and dangerous, but the environments themselves are simply hallways which lend no challenges, and the monsters aren't all that deadly either since the player is supposed to be the big strong hero that survives. You need neither skill nor brainpower to win here folks, and I for one am tired of these pieces of software being sold as "games" when there is no game to be played.
Aside from the above complaints from a true veteran game nerd, these big issues will stick out to anyone who plays it:
1. It's too dark. Id's new lighting engine is fantastically complex and capable, but it doesn't matter because the environments themselves are made of cramped, ill-lit corridors. It's bad enough that it hamstrings the already-weak action, but it also makes the world feel more like System Shock than Doom.
2. The monsters are dumb, slow-moving, and not very deadly. How you can you take this supposedly-dangerous world seriously when you have time to switch weapons two or three times before a monster across the room walks over to you? You will die some, but only because surprise attacks will wear down your health over a long time.
3. Aside from the nu-metal title music (gag...), the "music" is mostly strange, theme-less, ambient noise that reinforces the System Shock feel of the world. The music in the original Doom, while far from complex and made only from General MIDI voices, was much more moody and compelling. Where's Bobby Prince when you need him?
4. After you kill a bunch of monsters you'll find yourself walking around aimlessly trying to get out of wherever you are. This was an issue with the original game, but you'd think after 11 years they would have come up with more interesting problems and solutions than, "This door is locked, find the key (or PDA)."
I only give Doom 3 two stars for the engine. Save your money, kids.

From the very first moments I knew this game was a winner. Truly a masterpiece of graphical beauty and terrifyingly intense gameplay. I have not jumped out of my skin so many times in sooooo long.
And it runs fairly well on my P4 1.5GHz, 256MB Ram, ATI Radeon Pro 9700 128Mb, but I have to turn every graphical feature way down and play on the lowest resolution. Thankfully, the game still looks gorgeous.
You can interact with so much stuff in this game it's amazing. Your flashlight even casts realistic shadows when you shine it at a railing and other objects. The thrills and chills are done nicely too, with very well-done surprises here and there. Every scene, every room is dripping with nooks and crannies, wicked little hiding places and crawlspaces, and it's just unbelievable the amount of detail that went into creating this masterpiece.
I am hooked on this game.
Doom 3 is junk, Painkiller is much more fun!

This game was so boring I gave up before the first mission was over. If your an idiot who is easily amused than this game is for you. ID has fallen and can't get up. "Painkiller" actually offers a lot of really cool weapons and unique game play that has me playing it again and again. I am going to wait for Halflife 2 reviews before I run out and buy to make sure I don't waste my money on junk like this again.

I have got to say this is the worst game I have ever played and I loved the first Doom.
a) If I try to play Multiplayer, I always get CD Key in Use and it doesnt allow you to play
b) I have mailed support loads of times, not one reply
c) It is full of bugs, you join a game 1/4 and the server is always full
d) You select none passworded games and the games are passworded and you have to start again.
e) The filter for ping rates doesnt work properly
This is going back to the shop tommorrow as ID have delivered a pile of Rubbish.
Big Disappointment

I am a big fan of previous DOOM games, as well as RTCW. This game's graphics are very poor, and I have a top end machine. It reminded me of games made years ago. Didn't have the great feel and action of previous games, doesn't even come close to being as good as RTCW. It is way too dark, movement is jerky at best, not anywhere near as good as previous games. Too much time wasted on silly things like trying to get a combination right to open a storage compartment. And, as another reviewer mentioned, walking around with the silly flashlight is as good as it gets.
I even had trouble trying to register the game, but no matter since it is so poor I'm not going to play it.
Save your money, buy something else.

...and anyone who says this is just an engine showcase obviously hasnt. There is a real atmosphere to the game, tension that few games manage, possibly half-life managed it. What can i say about the graphics that hasnt been said before... they really take things to a new level of realism, bordering on photo realism at times.
Not much fun.

I was very disappointed in this game. Thought there'd be more of a storyline and gameplay. It's tedious and boring. Graphics were decent. Save your money.

If you are (or were) a fan of the original Doom series or even the Quake series, you will not be disappointed. This game has a ridiculous amount of detail and content. The audio and graphical effects are absolutely amazing. This game is hands-down the best video game I've ever played and it has scared the crap out of me several times. I'd recommend a directx 9b compatible graphics card and at least 5.1 audio to get the optimal experience.
DOOM III will not dissapoint.

I have been into the id software games since Wolf 3D came out. I was fortunate enough to be in the press and get an alpha version of the original DOOM as well as be able to go to the id Facility in Texas and do a story on them when they were working on DOOM 2.
If the technology evolution is anything like the jump from DOOM to QUAKE to QUAKE II to Q3A to RTCW, DOOM III could be the single most important game to come out this year. Regardless of the hype, I'm sure it will be the motivator to buy or build a new computer ... I know I did. The system I've built was strictly for playing DOOM 3 and games based on that engine. It will be worth the investment.
I can't wait....
