Great graphics but a tad boring

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 3

The graphics and gameplay are awesome. It was addictive for the first 12 hours of play. Then it got old real quick. You do the same thing over and over again. The enemies change slightly as you progress, but the scene is the same. There is no storyline. There is really no challenge or puzzles to solve. All you do is kill enemies and locate PDAs. What I also find annoying is the constant darkness, where you have to use a flash light to spot almost anything. It gets old. Overall I do recommend playing this game just to see the graphics. You will love this game at least the first several hours you play it.

Doom 3 for Pc, not what I expected

I heard great reviews for this game and thought I would check it out. I bougth it yesterday for $20 and was very excited to get started. I was very impressed with the graphics and sound and I have a nvidia 7800gtx, 2 gigs of ram and an fx 57 processor, the game runs almost perfectly on the 2nd highest quality setting, the reason I only game this game 3 stras was because after playing it for an hour or two I strated to say to myself "this is getting stupid". All you do is run around in the dark shooting at mutant alien zombie creatures, with no map or compass or anything to direct you. Also you have to quicksave all the time or you will have to replay the previos half hour of what you jst did, and limited ammo and supplies just makes the game even harder.I think so far it is a pretty boring and repetitive game and if it doesnt start to become more fun in another day or two Im returning it.

KICK ASS GAME

this game KICKS ASS. go around bustin aliens in the ass. great game with sweet graphics. true, its kind of dark, but go to the Doom site and download the flashlight mod. it automatically attaches a flashlight to all your weapons. that is if you want no fun. play this game alone in the dark and youll be a bit scared :) . its all great fun though. just as good as half-life2, i suggest you buy both games though asap.

Have your QUAKE and eat it too.

DOOM 3 arrived to a great deal of hyperbole over the last few months. I did not play the other two and did not really know what to expect. I am a big fan of QUAKE. I have an aging Alienware computer with P4 2.4,Fx 5700 Ultra,Soundblaster Audigy 5.1.,1Gig RDRAM. My computer performed flawlessly, albeit at Medium settings. The game is fabulous. The environment is astounding and is increasingly scary as the game progresses. Yes the objective is still to shoot the bad guys, but the way it happens is very unique. I think this is a real gotta have game. BUT you also gotta have the power to run it. But dont dispair, read Hardocp's review to see haw your machine needs to be setup. Also I think you can get real decent play on the minimum standard machine. Its worth the money and a fun,fun game.

I cannot believe this ridiculous game!

When I ordered Dum 3 (that would be me for buying this thing) from Amazon when it came out, I never expected that I would have to try it on 3 or 4 PCs just to get the program to install! I don't relish the thought of having to pay $3,000 to play a $50 game. I can't really review this game because although my systems all met the requirements, none play the game. I am an avid UT2004 enthusiast, and I've only been waiting for this version of Doom to come out for 10 years, but I mean come on! Another little tidbit, you can't even e-mail Id Software to complain-how convenient that there are no links for e-mail or any other contact on any of their websites.
Bottom line---I think I'll just go to NASA to see if I can get a computer there to play this crap.

Not quite all it was suppose to be.

I too eagerly awaited this title and was disappointed. Much hype about little content. You may go blind trying to play this one. 90 percent of the game is played in utter darkness. Hearing creepy noises all around you only works for about 10 minutes than becomes frustrating. It seems that all this darkness means little attention must be paid to the actual graphics. The box graphics are way better than the ones in the actual game.
You run around in the dark until something moans. You frantically try to bring up your flashlight while it draws closer. After seeing whatever it might be, you switch to a weapon. Then again your back in pitch black, mean while your foe has hobbled off the side. Forget about firing flashes from your weapons to help you see your target. Apparently weapons don't flash at all when being fired in the dark on a Mars space station. If you actually hit something it soon fizzles away like a bug in a bug zapper, pretty lame.
If you really want a fun FPS of this genre, try PAINKILLER and it's new expansion pack. It is a much better looking game and an
over all better time. PK beat Doom to the punch with a much better game. Sorry guys.

Just another mindless shooter.

Once you get down to it, "Doom 3" is just another one of Id Software's mindless shooters. It simply does not live up to the hype. At all.

For one, the graphics really aren't that good, reminiscent of the slightly-too-polished appearance of the prerendered backgrounds of games like the "Resident Evil" series. Instead of perfecting the graphics and bringing them to the insane degree of realism you see in so many of today's games, they tweaked into ruin an aging engine and the result is a game that looks more cartoony than realistic.

You see, Id Software has basically used the same engine for every single one of their games. By the time they got to "Doom 3", it was so bloated that it will only barely run on the same computer that will beautifully run the superior graphics of "Half-Life 2".

(Want proof? Turn off everything you can, turn up the brightness, and drop the resolution all the way down. Without all of the bells and whistles, it looks exactly like "Quake II".)

The gameplay itself is even more disappointing than the graphics. It's extremely linear. The plot, or lack thereof, in this game has been so overused by other games that it's not even funny. You all know it. After coming through a manmade portal into another dimension, an unstoppable force threatens to take over the world and only you can stop it! Even the original "Half-Life" was guilty of using this as the basis of a plot, but at least it took a fresh approach to it.

The architecture in the game is off-the-wall and, indeed, absurd. Enemies come out of holes and doors in the walls that have no purpose other than to house enemies. Once again, it reminds me of "Quake II", in which you have to complete a bunch of missions that have nothing whatsoever to do with each other. "Incredible Crisis" for PSX, anybody? Good lord. Who designed this place?! It's almost as bad as the original "Doom"!

Enemies are only slightly smarter than the enemies of "Quake II" and, even then, the only improvement is that they won't run around in circles and attack other monsters before finally zigzagging after you. It doesn't even matter where you shoot them. You can kill them by shooting them in the foot just as quickly as you can kill them by shooting them right between the eyes. Also, the enemies all make their own distinctive sound right before you see them. Once you start recognizing these sounds, the game loses its shock value and stops being scary.

The weapons are a joke. The shotgun goes "plunk", for one, and the grenades don't do anywhere near the damage they really should. Also, will somebody please explain to me why I can't hold the flashlight and a one-handed weapon at the same time?

In the end, this game is just another mindless shooter. If that's what you want, save your money and the stress on your computer and just buy "Serious Sam". At least it acknowledges its mediocrity and doesn't try to cover it up.

If you want a game with substance, smart enemies, nonlinear play and superior graphics, buy "Half-Life 2" or "FarCry".

Very polished, very complete game

Doom 3 is an incredibly well made and artistic game, however I don't know that I would recommend it unconditionaly. This game is very graphic and intense. I'm 30 yrs old, and even at my age, I found some parts very disturbing. This game is the equivelant to the best horror movies out there.

In general here are the higlights:

- Top notch graphics; better than any game before.
- Very complete and "real" world.
- Excellent voice, music and sound work--again better than any other.
- Very scary... even horrifying in some cases.
- Great levels and layout.
- Above average weapons selection, but not the best.
- Good monster/enemy design and balance.
- Not too hard/easy on medium setting

Overall, Doom 3 was worth the wait, but some (skittish) people may not be able to get through it.

A little worried

Now let me state, that this is a good game on the most part. I have played the Alpha and things have really been strolling along on the game. I have a few concerns, although. But let me start with the good things:

This game is following the story of the original Doom
The graphics and sound are INCREDIBLE

Besides that, there really isn't any much else. This game is more like a demo showing off a new graphics engine than a full new game. To start, it has the same boring gameplay as the original doom. Get real! FPSs have changed a lot since 1996! People don't want to go searching for keys anymore! We don't want to type in pass codes! This game should really be called Doom: Revised. If they didn't base the game off of the original doom, they would have had a lot more flexability for making the game true to the times. But because of that, they can't do it now.

Another complaint is that the multiplayer is only going to support four players. I couldn't believe I heard correctly when I was told this. 4 PLAYERS?! I mean, comon, you have to be kidding me! FPS games are supposed to have good multiplayer, and four players is not going to cut it! If they want you to have only four players in a multiplayer game, its like having a 10 player match in Unreal Tournament. It just can't happen! Multiplayer servers are supposed to sport large player capacities, and if Doom 3 (or should I say: Doom: Revised) cannot even support a good ammount of players per server, what is that going to say about other games using this engine? Quake 4 is going to come out with this graphics engine. Does this mean that we can only have four players in our deathmatch games in Quake 4? I will go mad if I have to have a match against ONLY 4 PEOPLE in a server of quake. Quake is KNOWN for its extreme deathmatch games. I would not tollerate 4 player games.

To conclude, this is a must have for any doom fan. But it really needs some work. We don't want key searches in single player, and we want A LOT MORE players than 4 per multiplayer server.

UPDATE:

FUN: * * * (3 stars)
OVERALL: * * * (3 stars)

Well, below is the review I wrote after a couple of hours of gameplay. As someone else said, it starts out slow and then the story develops. Later in the game you get couple of new guns and new "FREAKS" show up!
-It seems someone did not pay a lot of attention to detail for the weapons. If there are 3 rounds left and i push in 5 more rounds to make total of 8 rounds..you don't need to pump the shotgun..a round is already in the muzzle. You pump the shotgun if you completely run out of rounds and feed fresh 8 rounds, now you need to pump one into the chamber before you can fire.
Apparently...this is something simple and should be expected of all FPS by now. ITs little things and attention to detail that make all the difference between a 3 Star and 5 Start FPS

Most importantly,
This game is the most "SCARY" game ever. (period)

-----------------------
-----------------------
Overall, this game is weak!
The only good things about this game are the Graphics.
The Game play is bad, same old going through levels and shooting bad guys. Same old guns that make sad sounds. You are playing the whole game is darkness...but if you need a Flash light you need to switch to Flashlight and then switch back to the weapon you were using. "what the heck, can I not have my flash light taped to my gun".
and them, you are at a Top notch research facility (Weapons research and what not ) but there are is no Night Vision goggle's. You fire the same old guns...that ofcourse look different but are no better.
Let me put it this way:
Half-Life was better than this game (except the Graphics)
and lets not even start comparing it with HALO, cause this game is not even close to HALO.
oh and did I mention, this game has to RE-PLAY value to it.
Do NOT buy this game, you'll just end up wasting your money. Wait for Half-Life2 and HALO2 to come out, I can bet they will be better than this piece of junk.
