A little new info...

(...) Someone mentioned that Doom III wouldn't be story driven and it would be just using "big guns to kill big monsters." Well, to that I tell you watch the official trailer and you will see the beginning of the story unfold right before your eyes. I also watched a video interview with the CEO of Id Software and he stated that Doom III wouldn't be anything like the previous. It's not going to be minldessly blowing away thousands of stupid enemies. The enemies for sure have A.I. and they put significance on fighting what almost look like "bosses." There is definetely strategy in this game from what I can tell.

I just wanted to state that this game does not seem to be following in the footsteps of its predesessors.

Doom3- SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I've been been playing fps's since wolfenstein. ID's creation 'DOOM' was fantastic advancement from the worn out nazi thing, so I was pretty excited to see Doom 3 come out.
The graphics are great, but not much better than half life, if at all, with an identical premise. Two other reviewers hit it on the head- same as half life & after about 3 hours it is the SAME OLD THING. Pick up some armor, get jumped. Pick up some health, get shot.

This is nothing more than a game of saving as quickly as you can so that when the next creature comes out of no where (and I mean NO WHERE- you do not have time to react AT ALL. Ridiculous) you know which weapon to have ready. And to make matters worse, 98% of the 'fighting' is done in the dark. OOOoooo, john carmack, I'm sSoooooooOOO scared.

It's a neat look at a retro game with new graphics. Save your $50+ dollars, this game sucks BAD. I think they took the original Doom engine and just flowered it up w/ pretty graphics. Quake was a MUCH better one player game, that's a fact.

Sweet. The engine shines. But Half-Life shines more.

Half-Life 2. The biggest kick in the nuts to ID Software. Not only does the engine look better, rendering realistic environments, but the advanced physics engine puts Doom's plastic objects to shame. Sure, Doom 3 has better lighting, but that's what Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is intended to resolve.

So, I'm a bit late jumping on the Doom 3-review bandwagon, but I can happily say that Doom 3 will be used on benchmark tests for the next year, at least. I guess that's pretty sweet...if you're into benchmarking. If you're a gamer, I advise you to consider not paying money to shoot stuff.

Hell, I picked up Serious Sam Gold edition for 5 bucks in Gamestop's bargain bin. The Gold edition packs Serious Sam: The First Encounter, and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. And both of those games feel closer to the old-school Doom and Doom 2 that you and I grew up to love.

The good things in Doom 3, and there are definitely good things, tragically fall to the bad things. I concur with a voracious passion to every reviewer who stated that the endless inside areas drag Doom 3 down. Doom 3 lacks open space, it makes shooting stuff very unexciting. Basically, Doom 3 is the most monotonous game I have ever played. I played for 45 minutes, in mouth-open awe, and that was it. I had to take a break. The levels are depressing, repetitive, and dark. Oh yeah, about that. Who's idea was it to make it so you can't use a flashlight and gun? I mean, what the hell. We can colonize mars and unleash the wraith of hell, but we can't figure out how to take some tape and strap a flashlight to a gun? Am I missing something?

Doom 3 isn't all that scary either. That atmosphere is great, until it becomes a monotonous bore (so it's great for 45 minutes), and then a few things click. First, the game uses cheap scare tactics. Enemies pop out. Through most of the game...and it's just not scary. Two, the enemy A.I. sucks. Okay, okay.....they aren't a squad team or anything, but by the 2 hour mark, you will be a master of dodging fireballs. And, as the game beefs up your firepower, you will have a fairly easy time ripping your opponents to shreds. I suppose I could try raising the game to the highest difficulty, but that would require replay time, and Doom 3 is about as anti-replay as games get.

On the plus side, Doom 3 is fun. If you play the game for 15 minutes every day, you might be able to tolerate it for 2 or 3 weeks. If you have had any exposure to other first person shooters, especially ones that have excellent variety, like No One Lives Forever, or the original Half-Life, you may find yourself questioning why Doom 3's gameplay is what it is. It's not even that kickback to the classic Doom. The classic Doom was not only scary, but had variety in level design.

If you're looking for a Doom nostalgia trip, look no further. The guys at Croteam pumped out this awesome title called Serious Sam: The First/Second Encounter. Not only is the game slick, it features mostly outdoor environments, and more enemies than you can count. And if you want to boast about graphics, check out Half-Life 2, or even F.E.A.R. (which suffers from many of Doom 3's symptoms, but is only 12 hours long)

A couple of months ago I would have given Doom 3 two stars, for the fantastic engine. But the Doom 3 engine isn't receiving much mod attention, and for obvious reasons. Half-Life 2's engine is not only easier to work with, but just projects more realistic looking images. Oh, and the Half-Life 2 engines looks spiffy on mid-range PCs. You need a 7800 to shred Doom 3.

This is one boring game!

I played this game for a few hours and I must say, it is repetitive and boring. The same thing happens over and over - lights go out and monsters come out of nowhere. Don't waste your money.

Great graphics but lousy gameplay.

The graphics for Doom are the best anywhere right now (assuming you have the flashlight turned on so you can see them). Most of the time the game is pitch black so you demons can jump out at you. Initially the demons were frightening, then the simple A.I. became boring, then it became anoying. The enemy is very predictable except for some of the scripted events.

The flashlight was annoying because it could not be used along with weapons. You have to lower your weapon everytime you use it. (Mods are available to fix this, but the game seems to be centered on leaving you in almost pitch black to make it frightening. Without the default flashlight set up the suprises are minimal.)

I quickly found the gameplay becoming boring because it is very similar to the original Doom. Personally I prefer more tactics in my gameplay. Halo 2 and Half-Live 2 look better, but I look forward to the Doom engine being used on future games with better gameplay and A.I.

I purchased this game anticipating running a state of the art game. My system more than matches the minimum requirements necessary to run this game, problem is everything on your computer has to be disbled, new drivers not yet certified by Microsoft need to be down loaded, etc., etc. etc. This is a game for the dedicated gaming machine enthusiast. I personally warn anyone not technically adept with computers to stay away from it. For a game that costs as much as this one does it shouldn't be so difficult to install and run.

I, like many other reviewers, have played the alpha leak of this game. It is indeed nothing short of astonishing. I was impressed by how smoothe it was able translate from a realtime cinema to your HUD (Heads Up Display), there was no loading time at all because all of the cinemas actually happen in the game and arent separate files that have to be loaded apart from the game itself. The engine used on this game is without a doubt the best i have seen in terms of lighting and realtime shadowing. The textures are very good and interactivity with the environments is also very respectable, although in the early build which i played, the enemy animations were a bit rigid. For instance, an enemy would just fall over like a log when shot, insted of actually responding to the area where it had been hit. I believe that the ragdoll physics hadn't been added in yet in the alpha, along with the hit detection. The game sounds like it is coming along well, although it is likely that you will need to upgrade your PC before being able to run it. The minimum system requirements for Doom III stated by Id are quite low, and wouldn't result in a very good game experience. I reccommend that you have a processor with a speed of 2.8 gig or higher ( Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading or an AMD athalon) and a respectable graphics card such as an ATI radeon 9600 or a 9800. I just hope this game, along with HL2, doesn't turn into another Duke Nukem'Forever.

A GOOD GAME

LISTEN. YOU DONT NEED A 3.2GHZ COMPUTER WITH 2GHZ+ OF RAM TO PLAY THIS GAME. I HAVE A 1.92GHZ AND 1024 OF RAM. WITH A 128MB VIDEO CARD. AND THE GRAPHICS ARE ON HIGH. AND IM PLAYING THE GAME FLAWLESS. THIS GAME IS VERY GOOD. ID SOFTWARE REALLY DID A GOOD JOB. IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 1.5MHZ YOU CAN PLAY THIS GAME. JUST DONT HAVE A 64MB VIDEO CARD LIKE SOME IDIOT DID WHEN I READ HIS REVIEW, SAYING DOOM3 WAS BAD CAUSE IT RAN SLOW. also, about 128mb, if the core clock is less than 350. you might have trouble playing the game, i would recommend 400 to be safe, witha memory size of 500 or more. memory meaning what its able to handle, not the MB but the memory of the card. mine is 500 core clock size with 1000 memory size. if you have 200 core clock and 250 memory size. DONT PLAY THIS GAME, it wont run right. other than that, if you have higher than 350 for a core clock. great play the game. AND---->I LOVE THIS GAME. IT IS VERY CHALLENGING YES. BUT THE SCENESE AND MONSTERS ARE VERY STUNNING. THE PEOPLE THAT SAY THERES TOO MUCH KILLING, STOP BEING A PRUDE AND PLAY THE GAME! I CANT WAIT FOR A DOOM 4. :p

Please save your money

This game is definitely not what I expected. In short, here are the worst parts of the game.

Terrible Storyline: You go around and shoot things. Obviously, this has been done before. I expected Doom 3 to have at least a gripping storyline that would keep me on the edge.

Graphics: Yes, the graphics are pretty cool. However, unless your computer is a mainframe, you will have to deal with mediocore graphics. I have a computer with 3.2 GHZ and 512 MB RAM and 64 MB video card, and I have to turn on the lowest settting. Even then, the game is hardly playable.

Not fun: I have never finished this game because it is simply just so boring. I remember when Baldur's Gate 2 came out. I finished that game in like a week. Baldur's Gate 2 is, by the way, a very, very, very, huge game.

Not scary: I don't think this game was scary at all. I am by no means a cold-hearted freak, and I enjoy scary movies and games. But this game couldn't even faze me.

In short, you need to save your money. Buy some other games. Even if you like this game, you will find that it has virutally no replayability. Please do yourself a favor and find a better game. There are hundreds of them out there.

Better than Half Life 2

If you played this game and said "hurrrr he should tape the flashlight to the gun" you missed the entire point.

You can either see what's scaring you, or you can defend yourself, but not both at the same time. That's innovative gameplay, and effective as well. This game was terrifying, not only because of what I could see, but of what I coudln't.
