Nothing spectacular

Once the initial excitement wears off, you come to realize that this is a bit bland. Every level is the same. Every showdown is the same. The scenery is almost always the same. I suspect most of the positive reviews are simply due to the hype this game has garnered.

Brings me back to the original days...

I remember a long time ago when I first came home with the original Doom, shareware on a couple floppy disks. That game was (and still is) the bomb. And now, 11 years later we get Doom 3. After reading reviews and seeing screenshots I was convinced that I had to get my copy on its release day.

Well now that I have it and I have played it, all I can say is wow. The graphics are stunning and smooth (around 60 fps, 54 with explosions and such) on my P4 2.8 (OC to 3.3) and my 6800 GT. This game does not run very smoothly however on my dual Athlon MP 1.9 with a Ti-4600, so it is obviously not going to run smooth on older graphics cards.

The sound is just intense. The sound is what makes the game and sets the mood. I was originally skeptical when I found out that the single player mode maps would be played without background music. I thought, "how cool could that be?!" But it is intense. I must say that this game is the only one that has successfully scared me $!%&less. A combination of the sound, graphics, and the eerie, dark levels sets a perfect tone.

This game brought back to me the memories of playing the original Doom. The only difference here is that the graphics are so much better, as is the sound, and they actually give you a storyline. That's right! They finally give you background information into the time and place of Doom!!!

In general, this game is absolutely incredible. If you haven't upgraded to a next-generation video card yet, this game WILL convince you that NOW is the time! So pick up your copy of Doom 3, turn down the lights, turn up the sound, lock and load, and be prepared to get the living daylights scared out of you!

No, it's not the second coming

Anyone expecting the "rapture" in the form of a computer game should apply elsewhere. No, I haven't found nirvana in the Alpha labs. However, after about one 45 minute session in my little gaming cave, my wife walked up behind me and without regard for the consequences put her hand on my shoulder. REALLY bad idea. My instant and quite vigorous reaction scared the beejeepers out of both of us. Obviously, there's something here that surely allows the suspension of disbelief, and the transportation via imagination into an alternate universe filled with ugly creatures, that really, really, don't like you. What more can anyone really ask from a computer game? I've been along for the Id ride since Doom, and have played Hexen, Heretic,
Quake, the "Wolfs", etc., and will admit to having unabashedly enjoyed every one. That's really my one and only criteria for a computer game. If I enjoyed it, or it transported me, for even a few moments into a world that allowed me to act vicariously through the actions of some sort of on-screen avatar, and it didn't suck or crash, or make me say really bad words to get it to work, I'll usually find something to like. Perhaps that's damning with faint praise, but there it is. Doom 3, on the other hand, is, in my small and probably worthless opinion, a glimpse of things to come and a work of art in its own right. Anyone expecting anything but Doom on steroids is "dooming" themselves to dissapointment. On the other hand, anyone who has an imagination and a bit of the ability to pretend that we all (or most of us, at least) had as a kid, just might enjoy this "A" ticket ride to hell more than a little bit. I would suggest that 5.1 sound in a controlled environment is a must. I would think that anyone playing this game at high noon in a noisy apartment with 10.00 speakers is in for a huge let-down. On the other hand, a good surround-sound system and a dark, quiet room (I converted a large walk-in closet to my computer room) is in for an auditory experience that is quite possibly unsurpassed in the annals of computer gaming. The visuals follow suit, and for reference, I'm playing this game on an Athlon 2500 IDEQ SFF box with 512M of ram and using the "gasp" integrated Nvidia geForce 4MX (no, really) video out. Yes, I gave it 128M shared memory and had to update the drivers, and no, I can't play except in 640X480 medium quality. However, when a pinky demon and his cousin are geting "up close and personal" I defy anyone to take the time necessary to lament the fact that every wart on their faces aren't exquisitely detailed in high resolution. Do that, and you're dead. Again. I do believe the wizards at Id have done it once more.

What Were They Thinking?

Doom 3 was a much anticipated disappointment. This is because the game consists of hours of monsters jumping out from walls behind you only to shoot you in the back. There is little innovation in this game and very few real challenges. The sameness is monotonous. Oh, yes, the graphics are quite nice, but even they have a similar look, sort of dark interior, mechanical corridors, mostly.

I was disappointed that there were very few physical challenges, such as jumping over moving objects, nor were there any puzzling mental challenges to add some variety to the game. This game was so empty of fun, I rushed though it to get to the end. When I was done I could only think to myself, what were they (ID) thinking.

So if you enjoy spinning around to kill the baddies, coming out of seemingly solid walls, constantly, by the thousands, then you might like this game.

Spooky. Great graphics. But can't see s***!

(*Review based on Demo*)
Perhaps many people go for the appeal of being left in the dark - and it definitely adds to the spookiness factor - but I just found it, well... annoying.
80% of the game you're either in the dark or can't see but a few feet in front of you. Its sort of like trying to fight in a box... its just rediculous.
There is nowhere to crouch down and hide or use any sort of tactics. Instead, you're just mindlessly running through areas, trying find stuff to shoot at.

Seriously, you can't use a light-mounted gun this far in the future?? Considering our current military has this ground-breaking technology, it should be available in a future military base on Mars...

Sorry, this game just didn't do it for me... download the demo before you blow your $50.

WARNING: Watch out!!!

While I am a DOOM fan from Doom one, I have real serious problems with DOOM3. My system meets all the criteria that is listed on ID's jacket, but the game will not run. It starts to run and then either hangs (requiring me to turn off the power) or knocks me out of the application requiring a restart.

I've spent the last week trying to get the game running, but I'm still having problems. I have a brand new computer and now I'm feeling that I've wasted my money. I love the game! What I've been able to work with has been a great deal of fun, but... It isn't much fun to reboot every few minutes. If you have the game working, then don't shut it down!!

While I'm sure my experiences are not the "norm" for everyone, just beware. The game will not run on with some hardware. If you are the unlucky one, then you've just wasted your money!

Just putting in my two stars

The reviews in here are great...many people feel exactly the same way I do. If you actually think spending 200 bucks on a video card is worth it, the game will look absolutely stunning. As for me, after 2 hours of game play...I stopped playing the game and haven't turned it on since. It's the same old FPS...with a horrible story line. I played, I conquered...I god very bored.

This game is a resource pig

Ok, simply put...this game is LONG overdue, has been overhyped, and is a less than enjoyable experience as a result. I have a Pentium 4, 512mb RAM and an nVidia GeForce MX4000 128mb graphics card, and the best performance I can get is Low Resolution and 640x480 (and even on these lowest possible settings, there are parts of the game that are choppy). And as for scares, well, let's face it; is there any way to really get scared sitting in fromt of your PC playing a game? "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" was a creepier game, and the Quake engine it used was far more effective than "Doom 3".

Your best bet is to save your money on this one. The final experience is pretty underwhelming and you'll really miss that $55. Buy it when someone else is done with their copy and is selling it for cheap.

Or just skip it altogether and wait 4 years until computers are even more powerful than they are now and the next big game comes out.

Don't waste your time or money.

Doom 3 is unbelievably disappointing and mind-numbingly boring. All the hype about the improved story line is hogwash. This is the same 10-year old tired formula with graphics that hog resources with little to show for it. Avoid this game at all costs! Wait for Half Life 2 to come out.

It's clear, some people are out of their minds

I understand that all the hype for this game forced some people to think they were gonna get a game that provided them with the secrets of the universe. Well, I'm here to tell all of you, Doom 3 does not come with the secrets of the universe. It is just a video game. It is just an excellent video game. How anyone can play this and give it a two star rating clearly shows they are not thinking clearly. The game is clearly developed and intended to provoke your sences. It is supposed to be full of mind blowing visuals, and sounds, to provide an incredible sence, drowned experience. In other words, this game is all about eye candy. That is the point. It is not supposed to have ground breaking gameplay. And so what? A game does not have to shake the world with new groundbreaking gameplay to be great. Anyone who believes that, is gonna be disappointed quite often. So for all you people complaining about the gameplay, get over it, and enjoy it for what it is. Visually, it is groundbreaking, and it is awesome.
