Great game, but far too short

I'd be hard pressed to say anything negative about this game. The storyline is engaging, the graphics are stellar, etc. The only other game that I find comparable is GRAW.
Here's the downside, the campaign is far too short. There's 5 acts to the campaign and once you're done, well you're done. To put it in gamer hour perspective, I bought the game on Nov 8th, played it regularly but not obsessively and completed the campaign by the 11th. All in all, I'd estimate maybe 20 game hours. For gamer points you unlock each of the 5 acts and a few in-play activities, and you can increase the difficulty from Casual to Hardcore to Insane, but thats the limit of single player variety.
The real value of this game comes if you enjoy on-line play, or play co-op with a friend locally or online. If you're like me and prefer single-player campaigns, then this game probably isn't worth it to you, but definitely worth a rental.
Just buy it, simply amazing!

It's very simple. This game will sell systems, and as a gamer, this is one of the most addicting, and a much more graphical powerhouse than ANY game system has ever put out including anythign ps3 has in the pipeline.
This is THE game, and if you don't have a 360 you should buy one just for this game. It's that encompassing, and amazing.
A must buy, no ifs, ands, or buts about it!
Way over hyped, but...

I'll start off by saying that this game is way over hyped, with the whole "redefines all shooters" thing. It's a good game, and worth $60, but isn't THAT revolutionary.
What the game does have is beautiful graphics, cutscenes are very well done and grenades are much more realistic, unlike halo, your enemies don't just get thrown up in the sky when they're hit with a grenade, they do get torn to shreds. The blood is a slight issue, I personally I have no problem with blood but it does seem a little overdramatic at some points. For instance, when you chainsaw an opponent, it's okay for them to be ripped up and pumping blood, but do we really need blood splattered all over the screen?
The cover system is done very well, but i felt that while they started out strong with it, towards the end they got a little lazy. You're still taking cover at the end, but you really don't use as many "advance transition moves" then you do at the beginning. The music score is okay, nothing you'll really remember. It really isn't a game that will keep you scared, although there are a few moments were you'll see a enemy and think "holy $@%& I have to fight that!!!". A.I. is good in most places, although allies can be incredibly stupid in some places, and they might force you to start over once in a while (act 2 is an A.I. nightmare).
I really wouldn't recommend this to kids under 13, unless you think your child won't be disturbed by the blood and won't repeat the numerous curses they say in this game. If you feel a little uneasy about you child playing Halo however, I would advise you to stay away.
So overall it is a pretty good game, please don't buy it and think that you are about to play the best shooter of all time. It has decent replay value, you'll want to beat a few tiems to get all the achievements. While I may seem very critical of this game, I still say it is worth $60.
Oh Yeah!

Now this is what the xbox 360 is all about. The game is very realistic (not the monsters part, the whole needing cover, intelligent enemies, randomness, gore, etc...) and highly engaging. If you get a chance, play this in the dark, with big screen with the sound cranked; it is totally imersive, and can scare the #!@% out of you due to creepy monsters attacking suddenly along with the appropriate soundtrack! The gore is fantastic (not appropriate for little kids, but slightly older kids will find it amusingly cartoonish). The graphics are fantastic and highly mood-setting and panoramic. There are some levels which you will play a few times until you figure out the key, others are pretty straight shoot-and-scoot levels. Learning to go from cover to cover is key in the game, and can not be overstated; if you are outside of cover they will kill you (like real life). Highly recommended!
BEST SHOOTER EVER!!!

I loved Halo 1 & 2 just as much as everyone. I have the same nostalgia for Doom, Quake, and Unreal as the next guy. But this game is freakin' awesome. The action is the tightest, most intense, most realistic of any shooter I've ever played. Even if the story wasn't great, the graphics weren't top notch, and the weapons weren't totally cool (chainsaw bayonet anyone?), the duck and cover action component is so innovative and head and shoulders above any other shoot out there that is will blow you away. This is one of the absolute must have 360 games for ever console owner regardless of your genre preference. Buy it. BUY IT NOW!
Finally Xbox 360's 'Killer App'

Upon first glance, this might seem like a run of the mill online shooter. You'd be highly mistaken. Although there's not much innovation, it delivers as a highly addictive first person shooter.
The back story is nothing original but Epic has gone to great lengths to ensure that the characters you play with and as are memorable. So much personality has gone into each of these characters, it's quite refreshing to care about what happens to them. The single player campaign has three difficulties and the highest level is appropriately entitled Insane. It's integration into Xbox Live is superb, as you can pick up and join a friend through various parts of the game. You don't have to rely on having someone in the same room to play the game with you. Having someone play with you makes the game much easier as you can revive each other and generally the second person is much better than the AI.
The AI in the game is amazing. They'll employ the same techniques you do. They'll duck into cover and pop out, trying to avoid your shots. And they'll fire from different vantage points, not always the one you anticipate.
Mentioning cover, that's where the originality of GoW comes into play. It's much like a game of paintball. If you stand out in the open, you'll die quick. You'll need to employ cover! It adds a lot of strategy to the game.
Here is where the game stands alone: Multiplayer. This is the best game I've ever played online. Typically there are teams of four (no more) going against each other. If you try to be a lone wolf, you'd better be better than all four because they'll be communicating with each other. If you don't like team games, this really isn't the game for you. It's already won numerous awards for best online game/shooter/multiplayer and with good reason.
Lag generally isn't an issue although currently sometimes the microphone headset doesn't work when you join preexisting games. That definitely hinders gameplay. There are a few bugs throughout the game, such as getting stuck in place after chainsawing, being seen as alive when dead by the remainder of the team and headshots not registering. These aren't common but happen every once in a while which should have been squashed through testing. Hopefully with downloadable content, quite a number of improvements will be added and things patched along with new maps to the ten already in existance.
There is an option to censor some of the violence and language, but by default it is extremely bloody/gory. I've met younger people online but sometimes the gore is excessive but the language fits right into the genre and definitely adds to the game.
I've already gone through one controller by being too hard with it. Adrenaline starts pumping and excitement takes over and I'm way too hard on it. That in itself should proclaim volumes about how great Gears of War is. This is without a doubt the best game I've ever purchased.
This is why I got a 360

Played this at a friends house and fell in love instantly. Soon as I could ended up getting a 360 and Gears. The co-op was everything I ever wanted in a co-op game. If you love action or shooters you will love Gears.
The most fun I've had since Doom

I'm an older, casual gamer. Gears really hit the sweet spot technically and from a playability standpoint. This is the most impressive console video game I have ever seen, period.
I've yet to play another shooter as satisfying, and yet it's not a spook or gore fest (the chainsaws and dismembering are cartoonish, hilarious, and over the top).
The difficulty settings start easy for noobs like me, but then go all the way up to very difficult (insane), so it presents a challenge no matter what your level.
The magic though is in the multiplayer. This is the most fun for the most time I've ever had online with a game. It is absolutely a riot. I played Halo 2 on line quite a bit, but never really enjoyed it as much as this.
IMO, Gears Of War, not Halo 3, is the "killer app" for the 360.
Mind blowing graphics and game!

Lived up to all the hype! Graphics are really sweet and so is the game play. The movement behind walls and obstacles in third person really work and feel right. The game sets new standards by which many games will now be judged.
Move Over Halo, Gears is Here.

Gears of War - Circa 2006
GOOD:
- Intuitive cover system which is a great fresh way to approach the overcrowded Action / Sci-Fi / Shooter Market. The Cover systems works well and is easy to pick up it also makes for a fun realistic gameplay experience.
- Intense multiplayer versus action either online or off online with either spilt screen, or system link.
- Great Co-op Gameplay allows two players play through the game from start to end. A co-op player can come into the game at any time and leave at any time.
- Gorgeous graphics, that even look better then the likes of Halo 2, Elder Scrolls 4, and F.E.A.R. (which is saying a lot).
BAD:
- Some might consider the plot Underwhelming.
- No buddies or parties in ranked matches only in player matches (non-ranked games).
- Game is considered short to some.
IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- A Sci-Fi First third Person Shooter (Camera behind the player) with quick pacing (Although slower gameplay) with an emphasis on shooting behind cover.
- Cover Play's a big role in the game much like in Full Spectrum Warrior or Kill Switch
- A slower-paced shooter, focusing on sound tactics rather than brute force.
- This game is not meant for kids or the immature, this game is gory/bloody/violent and has many fowl words. Although you can turn off most of these features
- Co-op and online versus is the big draw here.
GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Unreal Championship 2 (Xbox)
- Resident Evil 4 (Game Cube/PS2)
- Halo 2 (Xbox)
- Full Spectrum Warrior (Xbox)
- Kill Switch (Xbox/PS2)
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Many of the game's achievements are in references to movies, and Internet Meme's. For example getting 100 kills online with the Bow & Arrow will net you the "Nuge" Award which is in reference to Ted Nugent (the 70's Rocker) who is known for his love of Archery.
- You can also find a limited collector's edition. The collector's edition includes an art book "Destroyed Beauty", a bonus DVD with the video "The Making of Gears of War" documentary and it comes in a tin case.
- There are 6 new maps for this game two of which are free. The Free ones are Raven Down and Old Bones; the other four maps (called Bullet Marsh, Garden, Subway, and Process) will be free in September (2007) but right now they cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10.00 USD)
- Annex is the new gameplay mode for Gears of War, it automaticaly downloaded to your game once you log you copy of Gears of War on Xbox Live (even if you have a Sliver Account) this new gameplay mode which requires teams to capture and hold certain areas of each map plays much like a King of the Hill gameplay mode from other First Person Shooters.
