Gears delivers on the promise of next gen gameplay...

The cover system (that has been attempted in other games but never very well) works great, the combat is fast paced and intense and the engine a joy to behold.

AWESOME!

Gears of War is a great game. The single player was fun on the insane level and the multiplayer is the best out there. It is kind of weird at the beginning but once you get used to it you will enjoy it. If you have a 360 you have to get this game!

Mature first person shooter that's a blast!

I've played this cooperatively, single player campaign, and online multiplayer. I enjoyed all of them.

The game is for a mature audience, however. Don't let your young one convince you that they need to have this. The language is harsh. You CAN make some adjustments with parental controls to tone the language down and eliminate most of the gore in the game...but, you can't eliminate all of it. So, if you feel that PG-13 content is okay for your kids, go for it...and that's with the controls in place. Be warned, the setting is not defaulted to tone down the gore or the language. So, you'll have to be a active parent and set that up yourself.

Enough of my soapbox ... this game rocks! Game player is smooth and fluid. The story, is entertaining. I found the game to be over a little fast for the price of the packaging...but, I have 2 other difficulty settings to play through for my money, too!

What makes this game really shine is the cooperative game play. You can have a second player jump in and jump out at any time while you're playing the campaign. I have never played a game that had that feature so far...looking forward to seeing this style of cooperative play become a standard.

THE premier title for the 360

If you have a 360 and are over the age of 13, you've GOT to get this one. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend of mine, and not once regretted it. The gameplay is about as good as it will likely get for a console-based third-person shooter. The detail of the game is terriffic: very gritty and hard. The lack of a health bar is a refreshing departure from the constant scavenging of health packs most other shooters have you doing. It lends itself well with cooperative play, and I've played it through with several friends.

A warning to parents: this is quite the profane game with several swear words, including the dreaded effenheimer. It lends itself to the game quite nicely assuming you don't have a 4 year old hanging around learning new words. Decidedly an adult game, but a must-have.

Kids loved it

I ordered this for Christmas along with quite a few other games and this one seems to be getting the most play. The kids love it.

Best Game of the Century

I have not played a game that has made me stay up this late at night with a friend or has made my adrenaline pump as much. Whether its playing through Co-op with a best bud or stomping guys into mush, this game has it all. Simple gameplay, jaw dropping visuals, and strong A.I. this game has made me come back to it over and over again. Gears of War sets the bar so high for what a video game should do.....which is to entertain and grab the player by the throat.

Beware however of the graphic detail, for it is possibly the goriest game to play online and off. Not that it has the most blood, but the physics in relation to torn apart body parts and piles of flesh is just so lifelike. Set that aside and you will notice how much this game feels and plays like a 6 hr movie. Sometimes when I play it for over half an hour online against people my heart races because I get so caught up in it.

I highly suggest for those wondering about the Xbox 360, to at least try this game out. You make think twice about your $600 PS3 purchase.

Great FPS action hybrid

This isn't your classic shoot 'em up FPS like Doom. The addition of cover and co-op makes the game have an action or arcade feel to it. It's a good change to a genre that's gotten a bit stagnant. FPS and action game lovers should all enjoy this game.

Bought for my husband...

If you're a gamer, you already know this is a hot game, you don't need my un-gammer expert opinion! :) My husband loves it, that's why I got it for his birthday and I got it here because it was the best price!

best game released to date

one of the best games ever released, easily the best game released up to date for the 360. the campaign mode is very fun, especially the co-op. the three difficulties (insane is unlocked after you beat hardcore) give an extra challenge. however, i think the greatest aspect is playing on xbox live. its so much fun, with the different maps and game types, you can never get tired of it. the cover system adds a fresh aspect to shooters, and with two more sequels planned, it can only get better from here. a definite must have for all 360 owners.

Great fun, but overrated

Let me start by saying that Gears of War is an outstanding game. It is very well polished with no major glitches and excellent graphics. I can say with a high degree of confidence that most people will find it to be worth their while. Please excuse my gratuitous comparisons to Halo in terms of quality.

That said, I was disappointed in several departments. The much flouted cover function can seem almost broken quite often; since the A-button is entirely context sensitive, most people will find themselves getting killed in horribly frustrating incidents. For example, (and this has happened to me) a player might try to roll away from an enemy only find their character slam himself behind a piece of cover and get killed. Other aspects of the gameplay, such as the chainsaw bayonet, can prove equally frustrating, since a single hit will stun your character while he is revving his chainsaw. At its best, the Gears single player campaign approaches the brilliance of Halo. Unfortunately, these types of moments have the player shouting at the screen and throwing his or her controller just as often as they have the player dropping their jaw in amazement.

Overall, however, the single player is tremendous. Unfortunately, and counter intuitively, it's no fun to play by oneself. The horrible ally AI limits the player to the lower difficulty levels, so unless you have either an XBOX Live account or a good friend to play with the campaign is no good. Once you add that second person, however, the game really takes off. I have finished this game once on the easiest difficulty setting, once on the medium difficulty setting, and am now almost done with it on the highest difficulty setting. This game entices the player to go back and try it on a harder difficulty, since (at least for me) it is a slow game to learn. I can honestly say that this is one of the most satisfying single player experiences on the market.

For me, the multiplayer is sub-par. It feels far less precise than Halo 2 did on XBL, and the matchmaking system in miles behind Halo 2. This is an often mentioned complaint, but i figure i might as well say it again. Now, I am terrible at Gears multiplayer, so please take my assessment of it with a grain of salt. Practically everyone I know who has played it enjoys it, so even if I don't recommend it I'm willing to wager that you will.

Overall, Gears of War is a solid game marred by some of the annoyances I mentioned here as well as myriad others that can simply drive a gamer crazy. I hate having to sit through dialogue every time I die in campaign without being able to skip it, and the one vehicle portion is a bit of a mess. These complaints don't make me regret owning it, however, and if I were to pick a list of the top five games for XBOX 360 there is no doubt that this would be on my list. I just wanted to warn prospective buyers that while Gears maintains a consistent level of excellence, it is the most constantly frustrating game I have ever played. So please, don't let this article dissuade you from buying it, and don't expect yourself to have the same complaints as I have. Just be warned, despite what many might be saying, this probably isn't the best game on XBOX 360.
