An overall excellent production, and a must-buy. The depth of gameplay thrives in the immersion the game offers, and so the simplicity of the control scheme is a blessing, rather than a stale detractor. I happen to enjoy the few weapons there are in this game; it feels more true-to-life that there's not an arsenal of the world's most rare and diverse guns strewn about the battlefield. You're a soldier. You fight with what you're given - and the fun of this game comes into play when you're taking cover in the heat of combat, trading bullets with your foe on some dark, fantastically familiar warzone.
For what Gears of War lacks, it makes up with in polish and flair, and I haven't played such a pleasing game in years.

The best graphics on 360 hands down. Game play is very good on campaign and live. The only down side is the story is weak (I did'nt play it for the story) and sometimes you get stuck around cover. They have worked out some of these bugs online. This is a very realistic game, much more then Halo. Buy it you will like it.
Where is the Medium setting?

Gears of War is the best done console shooter i have ever played.
It has great graphics and a decent story, but the reason i like it so much is the Co-Op game play.
During story mode, if you see a friend login to Live, you can send him an invite, and if he accepts, he can join your game in progress.
its really a nice feature, you you can get assistance on really difficult parts, or just play with friends when the urge strikes you, while still playing the single player game.
A truly outstanding xbox 360 game, alongside halo 3.

For anyone over 17 (or a mature 13 or 15 year old if your Jewish :D), this is a must have. The weapons balance is nice, the storyline is amazing, and to top it off, I am amazed about its graphics (amazing because I only have 480p). People who complain about its difficulty are probably too impatient to realize the game's motto: "TAKE COVER." This is a rare game; rare because it is actually entirely better in co-op. I cannot wait for Halo 3, but I'm worried about the co-op cut-scenes; In Halo 2 co-op, the first few scenes were cut out.

This game was so great that I just had to go ahead buy the xbox 360. The game is totally unique from other console and shooter games. Its a third person shooter, which has not been done before. Most shooter games are first person, so this one gives you a very different perspective. The graphics are just mind blowing and the game play is just as good. The best part about this game is the online multiplayer aspect. You will never get bored of playing it online. There are constant new additions to the game. Like new game modes and new maps. Most of which are free now. My only beef is that they could have made the campagin mode longer. It is quite short. Gears is so big that there making a movie, a pc game is coming out and part 2 is to be released in the near future. This game is worth every penny.

I'm just the casual gamer, But yet I found myself craving to play this game a lot. it has that creepy eerieness that games like Resident Evil have, but it is a way faster moving game. The graphics are real sweet and smooth. It's challenging but yet retains it's fun factor with it's story and overall playability. That's another plus, the controls for this game aren't at all that complicated which adds to the fun factor. An awesome, fun, game with an engaging unearthly aspect to it. Definitely reccomeded for anyone, save small children.
Don't miss it.

Gears of War, or just "Gears" is a third-person action game for the Microsoft Xbox 360 home entertainment computer. Bet you didn't know that, did ya?
I'm writing this review late. The game was released Nov 6 '07, and here it is May something '07. Fortunately, we can still call it "new" for the sake of this document.
Anyhoo, this is anything but a standard third person shooter like your Lost Planet or your Killzone. Why? Because it uses a pretty cool cover system. Okay, Killzone used a cover system too, but I don't remember it being as cool, and it wasn't anywhere near as exciting. Or good looking.
Gears pits you against a horde of these "locust" guys. It picks up with the main character, Marcus, getting busted out of jail by his war buddy Dom. While the story could go in some interesting directions, it doesn't make much progress. Most of the mystery surrounding the locust, Marcus' past, and why the war is going on in the first place isn't solved by the time you finish the game. But there are hints built right into the game's really pretty scenery. I won't bother describing the graphics. They look really good. Go find some screenshots if you haven't seen any yet.
What makes Gears really stand out is the outstanding cover system. Pretty much anything can be used as cover, and you'll find cover in convenient spots creating some intense and entertaining firefights. Once you're in cover, you can blind fire or aim n' shoot a la Resident Evil 4. The weapon variety is low and they don't sound that cool (Lost Planet sounded a little better), but they're fun to shoot and get the job done anyway. And considering that the game lets you have a chainsaw, AND RIP PEOPLE APART WITH IT is more than enough to make me forgive the game.
What's difficult to forgive, however, is some of the voice acting. Everyone on your squad has a unique voice and personality (COLE TRAIN BABY, WOOOO!!), which is nice, and sometimes you think "Ha! That's clever!" but sometimes the voice work is flat, repetitive, and just dumb. It didn't bother me the first time through the game, but after replaying some levels it might start to get on your nerves.
In the end, it's definitely worth picking up. The shooting action is great, even though it's interrupted by tense but dull encounters with these huge locust females called beserkers, and the last boss is completely cheap...I don't regret exploiting his bad AI to beat him. I can't say it's the most intense shooter I've ever played (Call of Duty currently holds that honor), but you'd be a fool to pass this up.
Oh, and if you're wondering, yup, they use the f-word, and just about everything else under the sun except the c-word. So hide the kids.
