The best "Beat em up" Ever!!!

The first soul calibur revoloutionised fighting games when it was released on "Dreamcast" in 2000. Up until now Tekken was the king of fighting games on PS2, and then "Soul calibur 2" arrived. Tekken is dead! Repeat, dead! Long live "Soul calibur 2". The thing that makes "Soul calibur 2" so brilliiant is the fluidity to it. You can attack from eight different directions, making the game feel 3D, and each fight looks like a scene from "The matrix". There are over twenty characters to choose from, and over 200 weapons to use. Arcade is great fun, and weapons master is life sapping. This game is easily one of PS2's finest!

Best PS 2 Beat-'Em-Up Yet

Soul Blade on the PlayStation 1 was a revolution for the fighting game genre. It had previously unequalled graphics, excellent sound, and a host of brilliant features that added months of replay value, as well as being a technically excellent fighting game. Ditto its sequel, Soul Calibur, on Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast. It was more of the same but polished to within an inch of its life, and even today, still stands up as an excellent beat-'em-up.

Much was expected of the franchise's third installment on PlayStation 2 and, I'm delighted to say, Namco does not disappoint. The first thing you notice about Soul Calibur 2 is the extremely high quality of the graphics. ALthough not a million miles removed from the Dreamcast prequel(a testament to the power of that machine), the PS 2 has unexpected levels of detail - hair and fabric swing with previously unsees levels of freedom - and the intricate costumes and OTT moves, coupled with sumptuous (if slightly less-interesting than the original's) backgrounds make for a visually lush, uncompromisingly gorgeous game.

Similarly amazing is the sound. In a return to top form, Namco has bothered taking the time to translate all character speech to English, with accents, so now characters like Ivy and Cassandra sound like they ought to. The cheesy charm of the announcer is back, and the addition of the Intro-Screen Taunt is a nice touch. The music is excellent too, full of stirring battle-anthems and excellent effects.

The gameplay isn't that different from the first two games - perhaps a little faster, but that's it. Mind you, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and I challenge anyone to be disappointed when they play this game for the first time. It's easy to get into and difficult, but rewarding, to master, with secret characters galore, and a host of special features and new backgrounds, weapons and costumes to be unlocked. Namco has once again proven their mastery of the genre - with literally hundreds of special items to unlock, and a shoal of new and favourite characters to unlock them with, you'll keep coming back again and again to Soul Calibur 2.

There are two small complaints. The first is that there is a startling amount of slowdown in the game. When I say startling, I mean that it's shocking to see any game pushing the PS 2's power to the limits, and in relative terms, the slowdown isn't that noticable, nor that prevalent, but it does happen. The second quibble is that in Weapon Master mode, some of the missions are unforgivingly difficult, and if you haven't got a second player to sharpen your skills with, you'll find yourself frustrated quite often.

Minor faults are all that's wrong with an otherwise perfect game. I can't recommend it highly enough, being more competent than Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and a hell of a lot more fun than Tekken 4. Buy it and it will keep you occupied for many months to come.

Good, But Not Great

Soul Calibur 2 is i good fighting game. It has little flaws and can be a great time killer. But after the first few weeks of playing it, I started to lose interest. Weapon Master mode seemed great at first but became tedious after the first 10 or 11 missions. Doungions can become agravating, this is because they throw the same character at you in every section, not in all doungions but a select few. Playing under certain circumstances they give you can be difficult to perform especially with certain characters. Placing mines and such on the floor is an "ok" idea if it didn't only affect you and not your opponents. Weapon Master is also very short. Arcade mode is fun the first couple of times to beat, but after youve beaten it 5 times or so it becomes pointless. Soul Calibur however has amazing graphics and music. Overall it is a good rental game but not worth 50 bucks.

I'm forevermore the fan of SC 2!

I can't say how much I enjoy this game soo much. I almost beat the whole game. My favorite characters I play the most are Taki, Cassandra, Talim, Ivy, Seung Mina, Xianghua, Sophitia. Yeah that's kind of it for the female characters. The male hunky characters I adore to play are Maxi, Kilik, Raphael, Yungsung, and Mitsurugi. I even beat the extra arcade mode for double the gold. In the weapon master mode, I found it very hard to beat, depending on the missions, You have different subchapters to explore, and you even collect weapons, art, exhibition theater for each character, I almost got the whole SC2 museum in the game. Other than that it's great to have this game all to myself!

better than arcade original

If you didn't play the original soul calibur you missed out on one of the best arcade games ever. Now soul calibur 2 has come out for the three major consoles. I bought This game, hoping that it might be as good as the arcade version. And what do you know, it was a crap of a lot better! I woul go to my friend's house and we would play 8 on 8 for hours. There are 23 different characters and the single player mode is challanging and fun. There are over 30 different playmodes and about 10 different weapons for each character. Plus, you can play as Heihachi, how cool is that? If you are going to buy a fighting game, do yourself a favor and go buy Soul Calibur 2.

This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Round 2... FIGHT !

At the time I purchased my Playstation, it was Soul Blade that pushed it over the N64(which almost had me with the Pod Racer game). When Soul Calibur came out for the Dreamcast I heard very good things. And when it was announced that SC2 would be available across multiple platforms, I was psyched. However, not being one to fork over full price for a title, I waited for the inevitable price drop.

The game is awesome. Truly worthy of its lineage. The fighting has improved, as have the graphics and sound. The major downside (for me) is the PS2 'exclusive character'. While Xbox has Spawn and the Cube has Link, we get geriatric Heihachi. Not being much of a Tekken fan, I wasn't thrilled. At least everyone gets the new McFarlane character, Necrid. Being a "Rock" fan from the original outing on Playstation, I do like the larger, more powerful characters.

The arcade mode is great. Going head to head is also quite a lot of fun. And the Edge Master mode really adds a lot of depth. Now there are those who prefer the latest Virtua Fighter or Tekken games. But for me the king of the fighter's remains this tasty morsel from Namco. And at the reduced price, "the stage of history" has never been more accessible.
