OK, what most people want to know is how this compares to the PSX Version. Well, hear is an honest analysis. The FMV scenes and sound are by far inferior to the PSX. It's almost like watching a bootleg copy of a movie. But, the actual gameplay graphics are by far superior; it is a night and day difference. There are also just enough added features to make any RE freak buy this version, even if he already has the PSX version. There is now a one button touch map available like RE3. There are also more files, books, notes, etc... to be found that link the game more with RE3. Some of the puzzles are different. For example, the police safe has a diffent combination. Also, everything flows instantly, since no load time is required. An awsome game, and the new graphics are pretty impressive. If you're an N64 owner, this is a must have...
An amazing accomplishment.

Though there are many reasons I purchased, this game, let me come right out and say that the biggest reason for me was this: Full-Motion video running on an N64. Resident Evil 2 for the Playstation has always been one of my favorite games, and since I'm too stubborn to buy another system, I had to wait and see if it would come out for Nintendo's black box. In March of '99, my prayers were answered. Not only was EVERYTHING from the original game to be included, but the CG cinemas that set the stage so wonderfully in the PS version were also to be crammed onto the "huge" 64-meg cart.
All of them.
I haven't even mentioned the actual game yet. Though it is short (around 10 hours for the first quest, 6 hours for the second), the suspense-filled, nerve-racking gameplay makes every minute of those hours count. As I heard a publication say once: the atmosphere of the game makes you always feel like something's going to jump out from around the corner--and once you relax and stop expecting it, something DOES. Sheer genius.
Also, when you think you have beaten the game after playing with one character, think again. If you play using your saved data from the first game, but the other character, a whole new quest opens up, forcing you to go a different path, with even more ferocious enemies this time around. Also, many of the plot holes are sealed up the second time through.
No, the FMV isn't as good as on the other system, and no, there isn't a whole lot new to scream about here. There are some new files that you find laying around tieing in the stories of RE3 and the soon-to-be-released RE:Code Veronica on Dreamcast, and some new mini-games, but if you own the Playstation version, there isn't much reason to buy this one. However, it is to this day one of the best games ever made, and deserves a special place in any N64 owner's collection(well, if they're over 10).
Also, if you have an expansion pack, you can even play the game in hi-resolution mode, which looks much better than the original game could ever hope to. Not to mention that this time, there's no need to worry about memory cards as there are 16 save slots in the cartridge itself.
All in all, probably the finest PS to N64 conversion ever. Buy this one, if not just to see pretty movies on your little black box. The gameplay, graphics, and scares are some of the best out there on any system.
Hats off to Angel Studios for doing such a terrific job.
So what if it's 2 years old, RE2 for N64 is mind-numbing!

I know of some Nintendo purists who refuse to abandon their N64's for the PSX or even the Sega Dreamcast and in turn have never played a Resident Evil game. I used to feel sorry for those people. They didn't gag when the screen was filled with zombies feasting on what could've very well been a human being, they didn't laugh 'till their sides hurt at the cheesy acting and they didn't scream like Shirley Temple when zombified dogs leaped through the window and made chase. Now, those purists will get to play a real horror game for the N64, not some weak, lame excuse for a horror game. (Nightmare Creatures, I'm looking in your direction...) To begin, the graphics of the actual game are incredible. The characters are now portrayed in stunning high resolution and the pre-rendered backrounds still mangage to impress. The Full Motion Video (FMV) on the other hand, isn't as impressive. Because the N64 uses cartridges as oppose to CD's, FMV's are practically unheard of. But thanks to Angel Studios, Resident Evil 2 is the biggest Nintendo 64 game ever. Yes, even bigger than Zelda. (Zelda was 256 megabytes and RE2 is 512 megabytes) Although the graphics are improved, the rest of the game is exactly the same. To those who haven't played the PSX version, this is neither a good nor a bad thing. But to those who have already experienced RE2, you won't find any surprises here. Well, except for a few new notes and memos that link together RE2 to RE3: Nemesis and RE3: Nemesis to the upcoming Resident Evil: Code Veronica for Sega Dreamcast. The bottom line is that all N64 owners who haven't played this before should buy RE2. I also suggest that hard core Resident Evil fans should pick this one up. Anyone else should give it a rent, just to relive the horror that is Resident Evil. This is not the last reincarnation of Resident Evil 2 I might add. Capcom is going to release this chapter of the classic series on yet another platform: Sega Dreamcast. Hopefully the game will include a few surprises that were sorely missed in the N64 version.

When I first became aware that Resident Evil 2 was coming to the Nintendo 64 however, I began to get excited. When I heard that ALL of the full motion video that was on the Playstation version came included with the Nintendo 64 version, I became even more turned-on. When I put Resident Evil 2 into my Nintendo 64 slot for the first time, I was beyond enthusiastic--I was blown away. Who would have ever thought that full motion video would be capable on the Nintendo 64? Although it's a bit grainy-looking at times, it still looks fabulous, and creates eye candy for any Nintendo 64 loyalist. The actual game itself looks even better, with perhaps the most detailed background environments I've ever seen on a Nintendo 64 game. The sound is also very good. Everything is presented in full Dolby Digital, a feature which the Playstation version does not include. The default controls are fairly bad. Thankfully however, you have the option to customize and personalize your controls to whatever feels the most comfortable to you. As for the game's plot line, it's VERY interesting and is presented in a very unique way. This is the type of game that you want to keep playing just to see what happens next in the story. Another thing I like about Resident Evil 2 is hat this game is DESIGNED to scare you (and it WILL scare you). Very few games, if any, will make you experience the same amount of catharsis as this game will. The Nintendo 64 version specifically also has many added features that other versions of the game do not have (such as the new ex-files and item randomizer option). If you're a Nintendo 64 owner, do yourself a favor and buy this game. If you're not a Nintendo 64 owner, buy a Nintendo 64 AND THEN buy this game! Forget Playstation, because this is the best version of Resident Evil 2 that any avid video game enthusiast is going to get.
Good enough to keep you awake at night

The first time I played a Resedent Evil game, it was the original, on the playstation. It scared the poop out of me, even with its bad acting, and at that point I decided I loved it. Being a N64 owner, I rented RE2, and didn't really expect an equal. I was right, it isn't equal to the playstation version; it is way better! I actually yelled out when a licker jumped at me through a mirror, and had to press pause to meditate when I had to kill someone who at one point helped me, just because they turned into a zombie. When I had to return the rented cartridge, going out a buying it was immediate. Then there is the story line, which from my inexpirienced view, is just plain neat. Okay, so the whole making of the zombies thing is psuedo-cheesy. But the development of that cheese makes you feel as if you are a private eye, piecing together the puzzle to find... well, something neat. Me, being a critic at heart who tends to live vicariously through those who are more famous than me, give Resendent Evil 2 for N64 two thumbs up.
The Bloodiest Console Game Thus Far.......

The "Resident Evil" series has always been bloody. I've played through each game so many times it just isn't funny anymore. And this is the bloodiest one so far. And maybe the scariest too. Taking place not too long after the first "Resident Evil", the story this time takes place in Raccoon City itself. An outbreak virus has spreaded to the town (and, as you'll quickly learn, it's people as well) and everything has gone wrong. Recruited by the now infamous R.P.D., Leon S. Kennedy arrives to start his new job. But the rookie cop isn't alone, as tomboy Claire Redfield rolls into town seeking her lost brother Chris (from the first game). The two of you have to find a way out of the most dangerous town in the world. Just like all the "Resident Evil" games, you have your sidekicks too. Leon was always my favorite male main character throughout the series, and his sidekick is my favorite of the sub-characters; her name is Ada Wong (whom you may remember from the first game as a code). Claire is my least favorite of the female main characters (Jill Valentine was my favorite), and her sidekick, Sherry Birkin is the most useless little girl in gaming history. "Resident Evil" is a lot like Capcom's other masterpiece series "Street Fighter", the second installment outshines the first one in every way imaginable. You're arsenal now contains a bow gun (equivalent to the pistol basically), a spark gun (equivalent to the bow gun), a machine gun (fun to use, but eats ammo a little too quickly), and a gatling gun (more powerful than the machine gun, and more funner too). As well as custom parts to your pistol (three bullets at once), shotgun (packs a wallop, you couldn't miss a roach with this thing), and magnum (it's almost like an elephant gun, serious damage, only the gatling gun and rocket launcher are more powerful). Claire has the bow gun, spark gun, and grenade launcher exclusively; while Leon gets the flamethrower, shotgun, and magnum to himself. Obviously, Leon has the better weapons. There are a variety of different looking zombies too, including the first female one (not that I cared, I blew her head off just the same). The other new enemies didn't seem all that scary or even challenging. Mostly annoying, especially that licker. Of course, the bosses are new and more impressive than the first "Resident Evil". Other notable improvements are the graphics, the way the characters react to being hurt (for example, Leon uses his shotgun as a crutch when enough life is lost), the amount of zombies on screen, and the scare factor. You can get four different endings in this game which ensures lots of replay value. And getting to all four endings has a different path. If you beat the game with Leon, you can save the game and come back and play it with Claire which will be a different path than the regular one Claire has, and the same goes for Claire if you start it with her, Leon's path will be different. The most notable difference in the second route is the addition of a new Tyrant that stalks you throughout your journey. He's tough, he's scary, and he pops up at times you least suspect (you aren't given a large area to fight him, usually it's a hallway or average sized room). That's why I believe this was the scariest "Resident Evil", as Tyrant-103 never really 'dies' except for, well, I'm not gonna spoil that. My only problem with the game was the difficulty factor. It was too easy. And the puzzles were probably done by a four year old (no, really, they're that bad). 'Puzzles' such as finding a plug that's ten feet away aren't very challenging. Maybe Capcom decided to take the game in even more of a B-movie direction than it already had (their lines were always funny, weren't they?). Nevertheless, this stands as one of the best action/adventure on the PlayStation, but it's better on the N64. Why? The graphics were better, the game runs smoother on this platform, and (best of all) no loading. There's more secrets in this one than any other "Resident Evil". Much better costumes (two for Leon, one for Claire), the super zombie Brad Vickers (the pilot from the first game), the Colt S.A.A. (basically the same as the normal pistol, but Claire holds it gunslinger style and reloads VERY fast; you get this with her one costume while Leon fires his normal pistol with one hand only) and gatling gun, and let's not forget our poor Umbrella trooper Hunk. Hunk is another character in the game whom you play as for a side game. You play your own difficult little quest in which you're trying to escape with the G-virus. Was that quest too easy for you too? Really? Then try it with Tofu. The funniest thing I've ever seen in a video game. But also the hardest quest I've ever tried. I'm a hardcore gamer, but this quest was too difficult even for the likes of me. All in all, this is probably the best "Resident Evil" so far.
The evil in this game is just too good.

The zombified town of Racoon City, has Leon and Claire to use as food. Your set smack in the middle of this infested town, and you will need your own wits (and brians) to survive this horror. Not only does this game deliver the thrills and graphics of its PSX brother, it also addes much better flexablilty to the control. Plus, it also has all the pre-rendered movies that PSX did. How many of you jumped when the Zombies stuck there hands through that wooden window in the police station?
This game beats the PSX version any day!

It has better graphics for one, and another, the analog controls will help with the semi akward movement of your charecters. It will have better replay value, after you beat the game, it will kick in a item randimizer, where you will have to refind all the items. This is a must have for any N64 gamer! Long live RE2 for the N64!

Resident Evil 2 is now enhanced on the Nintendo 64!!! with many new features, such as the Randomizer, EX Files and violence Control, the N64 Version far surpasses its Playstation Counterpart. Surprisingly, the graphics are competently as smooth as the Sega Dreamcast Version's. What makes this version the best is that you don't need a memory card, there is no 2 disk swapping and, as mentioned, the graphics are to the best it could be.
In actual gameplay, you take control of 2 characters for the majority of the game- Claire Redfield, sister of Chris from RE1, and Leon Kennedy, a rookie cop. You also take control of 4 minor characters named Ada, Sherry, HUNK and TO- FU.
The Picture and sound quality aren't that great compared to the Dreamcast and PSX sound quality. The sound is tinny aand echos. The picture is a little brighter than the PSX version and too unclear compared to Dreamcast's. Nonetheless it is still an amzingly great port.

The first time I saw Resident Evil 2, I was at a friend's house. He owned the original Playstation version of the game. I was completely amazed by the depth of its story and graphics. I thought that the Nintendo 64 was not capable of running the video and other graphic effects. Being an N64 owner myself, I was disappointed that I would never get to play this game at home. Then, Resident Evil 2 came out for the N64. It is an excellent translation of the Playstation version, and then some. The graphics are crisper on the Nintendo, the sound is better, and there is absolutely no loading time. The story is all there, as well as all the original characters. Capcom took one of the best games around and made it ten times better.
