the best game on N64 ever!

I am a big nintendo freak, I have all the Mario and zelda games for both N64 and GC, but out of all, Resident Evil 2 is my favorite. This is the first RE I've played and I love it. You can play as 2 characters Leon (a Racoon City cop) or Claire (a biker girl looking for her brother, a S.T.A.R.S. member). You can adjust the violence level and blood colour for your viewing pleasure. The game has a whopping 512 megabits, the biggest on N64. The cinimatic sequences are 3-D (and look like PS2), but the in-game grphics are 2-D and may seem a little mediocre. Another downside is the game may seem too short. Both characters have two games, both slightly different. The "A" file may get boring because you find yourself running through the same room many times. I needed a guide book for the Police Station portion of the game but then was fine. You then move into the sewers (that's the only way you can get to the masion). There are also very few weapons, both character starts with a hand gun(for Leon an H&K 70 for Claire a Browning HP), both are upgradable to turn them from semi-automatic to three shot burst. There is also a Remington 1100 shotgun, MAC-11 SMG, Desert Eagle .50 caliber hand gun, grenade Launcher and Crossbow. I have not finished the game yet, but I look forward to.

The evil in this game is just too good.

The zombified town of Racoon City, has Leon and Claire to use as food. Your set smack in the middle of this infested town, and you will need your own wits (and brians) to survive this horror. Not only does this game deliver the thrills and graphics of its PSX brother, it also addes much better flexablilty to the control. Plus, it also has all the pre-rendered movies that PSX did. How many of you jumped when the Zombies stuck there hands through that wooden window in the police station?

From the reviews of this game, I was expecting something maybe a little better than 007, however, what I found was that the character controls are so hard to use that I can barely play this game for more than one minute. Unlike Super Mario, 007 and most other Nintendo games where the control stick is "intuitive", in this game the control stick doesn't follow the character so that when you want to move forward you end up going backwards if the character is facing the wrong way! Needless to say this is almost always into the arms of some zombie that won't stay down for more than a few seconds and gets back up again before you can even spin the character so SLOWLY around again to allow forward movement that you get killed, which you couldn't see in the first place because the game view is so bad.

My only guess as to the vast majority of good reviews that this game has received, is that there must be some sort of conspiracy, wherein the game's developers must have paid their employees a bonus for submitting falsified reviews.

Don't waste your money on a game that is so extremely badly developed that the programmers couldn't even get the "state of the art" 3-D controls correct. This game should have been released in the seventies when unrefined controls were acceptable to the gaming public, not now.

An Excellent Translation of an Excellent Game

The first time I saw Resident Evil 2, I was at a friend's house. He owned the original Playstation version of the game. I was completely amazed by the depth of its story and graphics. I thought that the Nintendo 64 was not capable of running the video and other graphic effects. Being an N64 owner myself, I was disappointed that I would never get to play this game at home. Then, Resident Evil 2 came out for the N64. It is an excellent translation of the Playstation version, and then some. The graphics are crisper on the Nintendo, the sound is better, and there is absolutely no loading time. The story is all there, as well as all the original characters. Capcom took one of the best games around and made it ten times better.

The Best Version Of One Of The Scariest Games Yet

It was a brave decision to convert this for the N64, a machine never intended to store and handle the huge amounts of FMV that this game had. Thankfully, it proved to be the right one as this is superior to the playstation version and does the series perfect justice. This game has everything from the original version ,including the pre-rendered cut scenes that a lot of people were worried the N64 couldn't handle. They've made the transition smoothly. The only sign that there not running from a CD is an occasional breakdown of the resolution on fast moving scenes but given the fact that most of the FMV is dark and gloomy anyway, it's barely noticeable. Apart from that, everything from the playstation is prefectly duplicated and the N64 even improves on that versions in game 2D graphics, especially if your running it through an expansion pak. The N64 version also has the extra options of changing the blood colour for a bit of variety, or once you've finished the game, of replacing all the games items in different places thus adding a bit of replay value. Which is a good thing because, as a direct port of the original, it suffers from the same problem of being a bit too short. Completing it with both characters and both routes won't take you any more than a month depending how much you play it and it's definately not as much fun the second time when you know whats gonna jump through the windows. Also, anyone whose used to true 3D games like Mario or Zelda might find controling Leon or Claire through the games static 2D backgrounds a bit tricky at first but stick with it and you won't be disappointed. Scary, fun and the one game you don't want to play on your own with the lights off.

I purchased this game the day that it came out. I have been a fan of the Resident Evil series from the beginning. This game and Resident Evil 0 (now coming out for the Gamecube) are two of the main reasons I bought an N64. However when I got the game home and started playing it, I immediately found some things that bothered me. While in general RE2 is a very good port of the PlayStation version it has some problems that the PS version didn't. The first problem, and the biggest one, is the controller. The game was built around the PS controller and Capcom didn't take the proper time to rework the control scheme too well. The design of the N64 controller makes it hard for people to easily access all of the buttons. In a game like this all the buttons need to be accessible. While after a while you will get more or less used to the controls, it still doesn't feel right, and I feel this holds the game back a chunk.

The second problem, albeit a small(er) one is the fact that you can change the colour of the blood that is in the game. It's a neat idea that just doesn't work. If you've played any of the rest of the series and know exactly what's going on, you know there's absolutely no reason for the zombies to bleed green. Humans, even after they're dead, don't bleed green.

It was quite impressive that Capcom managed to port all of the FMVs from the PS game onto the N64 cart, and they did a good job of it too. Unfortunately due to the type of media the N64 uses the FMVs just aren't as good as the PS game's.

If you have an expansion pack in your system it can actually make the game look better than originally which is nice. It does a good job of this and hats off to Capcom for enabling this to work.

To sum it all up:
-if you have a PS and an N64 buy the PS version.
-if you just have an N64 and want to be able to kill lots of zombies and other creatures, and don't mind get incrdibly frustrated with the controller then by all means buy this version

-Scares aren't as plentiful as they should be, but at least the first time through it can give you a few jumps.

How is this Game Possible?

The Nintendo 64 version of "Resident Evil 2" is nearly an exact port of the original Playstation version...which is amazing. I'm not sure how they managed to fit Full-Motion Video sequences on a cartridge, but they did. I'd just buy this game to marvel at all the technological hurdles this game overcomes, but the actual gameplay is great. It's creepy and suspensful, and will make it that you'll have trouble sleeping at night. It also requires a little puzzle-solving, but that never hurt anybody, and the puzzles aren't too difficult. A must-have if you don't own a Playstation. That's my two cents.

Best version of Resident Evil 2!!!

This version of Resident Evil 2 is by far the best one of all. Others might not think so, but who cares? First off, the graphics are much more detailed and really stand out. But, that's only if you have the expansion pack. Without it, they are pixelated and choppy. The FMV clips are like watching a bootleg movie, but still descent anyway. Also, this version has great extras like Blood Color change, Violence Control, EX Files, Randomizer, and added zombies not in the Playstation or PC versions (You see them close to the end, and they're really creepy.) I was totally blown away by this port. It definately is a must have. If you never played this game before, I suggest this one. Especially with all the added stuff. Have Fun!

Resident Evil 2 is a good game.

I haven't played very many nintendo 64 games, but this is one game i had to check out. The graphics were awesome, the music was awesome, the characters in the game itself were one of the best i've seen. It had great action, and was very complex to beat. I reccomend this one to anybody who likes these kind of games or who just loves resident evil.
