From the reviews of this game, I was expecting something maybe a little better than 007, however, what I found was that the character controls are so hard to use that I can barely play this game for more than one minute. Unlike Super Mario, 007 and most other Nintendo games where the control stick is "intuitive", in this game the control stick doesn't follow the character so that when you want to move forward you end up going backwards if the character is facing the wrong way! Needless to say this is almost always into the arms of some zombie that won't stay down for more than a few seconds and gets back up again before you can even spin the character so SLOWLY around again to allow forward movement that you get killed, which you couldn't see in the first place because the game view is so bad.
My only guess as to the vast majority of good reviews that this game has received, is that there must be some sort of conspiracy, wherein the game's developers must have paid their employees a bonus for submitting falsified reviews.
Don't waste your money on a game that is so extremely badly developed that the programmers couldn't even get the "state of the art" 3-D controls correct. This game should have been released in the seventies when unrefined controls were acceptable to the gaming public, not now.
Not impressed with B-grade movie game

The graphics are beautiful (hi-res 640x480-better than PS1), but the game didn't scare me. It relies upon B-grade horror, like zombies jumping out from behind doors, and that level of story-telling doesn't scare me.
I prefer "intellectual horror" like you'd find in a Hitchcock film. Games like Eternal Darkness, Clock Tower 3, and Silent Hill. Those are the kinds of games that mess with your psyche & truly scare you.

Resident Evil 2 for the Playstation always has and always will be one of my favourite games, so I was incredibly excited to see that it had come out for the N64. After having played it I was happy to see that they had the FMVs more or less, but the game just didn't feel right with the 64 controller, and the idea of changing the colour of the blood is all fine and dandy for Turok but it has no place in Resident Evil. Also Nintendo has seen it fit to make this game less dark and dreary than the Playstation version which I think was a poor choice. If you only own a N64 and want to play a survival horror game rent it, if you don't care about survival horror much or own a Playstation or Dreamcast don't even bother looking at this game.
ARGH ! Why did they have to put THIS on the N64 ?!!!!

Okay, first off, I'd like to say that R.E. is one of the best puzzle/shoot-em'-up games I have ever seen ! However,
re-releasing this for the N64-console was a BAAAAAD idea . The controls are poor(and hard to get used to) the sound is sometimes crackly, and the gameplay is harder than the PSX version . Want something better ? Get the R.E.2 on the PSX .
annoying, poorly made game...

Don't buy this game, if you are curious rent it or play a friend's. Moving around is like moving in quicksand, you are constantly being attacked from all directions. If it was in a first- person setup, it might make for a challenging& fun game. Instead you get a overhead view& constantly you are attacked from the rear& loose much health while slowy turing around.
I have been playing games since PONG & played 2600 games untill I flipped the score counters several times.
Resident Evil is a tedious game.

Change of heart for n64? Nope the machine start with no gore games. And then N64 users get Quake & and Quake 2 and now this. Weird and overall and a fairly workman like conversion of resident evil 2. Oh dear.
A good game with some definite flaws

I purchased this game the day that it came out. I have been a fan of the Resident Evil series from the beginning. This game and Resident Evil 0 (now coming out for the Gamecube) are two of the main reasons I bought an N64. However when I got the game home and started playing it, I immediately found some things that bothered me. While in general RE2 is a very good port of the PlayStation version it has some problems that the PS version didn't. The first problem, and the biggest one, is the controller. The game was built around the PS controller and Capcom didn't take the proper time to rework the control scheme too well. The design of the N64 controller makes it hard for people to easily access all of the buttons. In a game like this all the buttons need to be accessible. While after a while you will get more or less used to the controls, it still doesn't feel right, and I feel this holds the game back a chunk.
The second problem, albeit a small(er) one is the fact that you can change the colour of the blood that is in the game. It's a neat idea that just doesn't work. If you've played any of the rest of the series and know exactly what's going on, you know there's absolutely no reason for the zombies to bleed green. Humans, even after they're dead, don't bleed green.
It was quite impressive that Capcom managed to port all of the FMVs from the PS game onto the N64 cart, and they did a good job of it too. Unfortunately due to the type of media the N64 uses the FMVs just aren't as good as the PS game's.
If you have an expansion pack in your system it can actually make the game look better than originally which is nice. It does a good job of this and hats off to Capcom for enabling this to work.
To sum it all up:
-if you have a PS and an N64 buy the PS version.
-if you just have an N64 and want to be able to kill lots of zombies and other creatures, and don't mind get incrdibly frustrated with the controller then by all means buy this version
-Scares aren't as plentiful as they should be, but at least the first time through it can give you a few jumps.
