MOO2

Outstanding game that was based on the still hugely popular VGA-PLANETS PBEM game that has over 60,000 registered users, the authors of MOO2 freely admited they played vgaplanets and also admited in a CGW interview that they consulted Tim Wisserman and he didn't see a conflect since his game was built as a true multiplayer game whereas MOO2 used AI. Still..very enjoyable but not at the level of vgaplanets strategy wise or anywhere near as customizable but still fun.

Many Enhancement, but one major drawback from Orion I

I was an authentic Orion fan as I played Orion I throughout years since I got it early in 1994. This version of Orion absorbed quite some ideas from Civilization series, which is a very positive step. And the addition of planetary system model, the two categories of heroes, and the extensive management of resources(manpower and food) are all interesting. Yet there is one major thing puzzled me throughout the game: even as I started with an "Impossible" level game, I was literally never attacked by any enemies except some rare assaults from Antaran --- and this latter assault could be powerful if I would have to face it with my early fleets. However, there is another addition in this version, the Starbase, which then turns even the Antaran attack into piece of joke. With the most primitive nuclear missiles equipped, at very early stage, my starbase destroyed the Antaran destroyer level fleet easily. (Later there are bigger ships coming, but your strength grows even faster.) I wonder, is this starbase addition(incredibly boosted the defensive advantage) discouraged any aggressive plans of the AI opponents? Also the planetary systems gave you lots of space to develop without the need to fight to expand your empire --- altogether makes the "difficult early stage"(as truly in Orion I) of your empire too relaxing.

Great Solo, Multi Needs Work

The Master of Orion games are very entertaining if you enjoy the build resources and expansion, conquer themes. The different races make is interesting, and it can be done multiplayer.

Down sides. Refitting your ships constantly can take a bit, especially when you have to go back and refit or get rid of yoru old ones. And in the solo game, you can tell it to keep passing turns until something actually happens, making the downtime a lot less. Not so for Muliplayer. you could each be sitting there passing your turn back and forth for awhile before you actually want to do another turn

Great Game 4 the Strategy-genre lovers and others as well!

When I first got Master of Orion 2 , out of the box and into my computer , (Which at sometimes can be slow) I had a very hard time to install it and for a week or two it was sitting there on my desk waiting for me to give it another shot at installation and so I did and after yelling a few curses' to myself I finally got it installed! Alas , the intro was great and as I saw the opening sequence I was in awe. As I started gameplay I learned you could choose from thirteen different races and even create your own (of course with it's own set of pros and cons).
As I embarked for galaxy domination it was a little tough to figure it out but I soon got the hang of it and so there I was with an ultimate fleet and almost complete control of the galaxy when my opponent race then devoloped better technology and wiped me out...
So... I started over with a new race and hot dog I won!!!
Too easy so I set it at a different difficulty and it was a lot harder.
In this game you can do almost anything from, hiring officals , trading with other races , making treaties , building great cities , waging war and taking over an opponent's star system(he , he , he). You can do it all in this game.
A few setbacks are poor graphics , a little complex for the younger ages and easy overpowerment and a slow and brutal installation process.
Overall I was addicted for a couple month's and great if you love strategy's and have patience!!!

A bit of a disappointment.

I'm a huge fan of the Master of Orion games, and I've spent far too many hours in front of my computer playing this game and its predecessor. MoO1 may have been inferior graphically, and there WERE some major improvements in this sequel, but overall, it was a bit of a letdown.

This was, for the most part, the fault of the micromanagement. The AI, of course, was idiotic about what it chose to build, and that meant that, if I was expanding quickly, I'd have several planets that I'd have to go to every turn or so to build a nice queue for.

A large part of the fun of the first game was the fact that I didn't have to worry about those minutae. I just decided how much of a planet's income was to be spent on productivity, then went on worrying about the larger-scale problems; trade agreements, expansion, wars, etc.

A few friends and I spent a lot of time playing this as a multiplayer "hotseat" game, and near the end, when everyone had a lot of planets to worry about, turns took forever.

I'm anxiously awaiting MoO3, though I fear that the removal of the IFPs will mean that later turns will turn into micromanagement nightmares like in Battle At Antares.

I have the version for Mac and I love it!

Finding computer games for a Mac can be difficult, frankly I don't understand why because Macs are not uncommon. Master of Orion II combines neat graphics, the races are quite different, with strategy. I like the fact that I can advance and "win" either by killing everyone else or by politicing. I only wish the "create your own race" section allowed you to create an image as well for your race since you have only the standard models to chose from.

Really good, but not great

I started playing this game without looking at the instructions and found it very intuitive and easy to grasp. Very similiar layout to the original (wich I love and still play). I love the random events and the AI's aggressive style. I couldn't give it 5 stars because I'm mad that they took away the ability to research multiple technologies simultaneously. It also anoys me that they renamed the map icon to planets. Since I am new to this game, I keep going to planets thinking it will show me the planets under my control. Instead it shows all planets not under my control.

I used to spent hours and hours playing the first Orion. The second one is just as enjoyable and time consuming. If you are one of the few remaining fans of turn based strategy gaming - this is probably the last good title released before everything became real time. The rules are just the same as any of the Microprose titles - build colonies, ammass resources and technologies, build armies, destroy opponents. The AI is really frustrating to play against, especially at higher levels and random events are often cruel. Combined, those factors allow for re-playing the game dozens of times. The rules of tactical combat have been made more sophisticated in this version resulting in very lenghty battles - something I don't enjoy a lot. Also frustrating is the absolute inability to protect planets in the later stages of the game - the defensive technologies pale against the powerfull attack ships which have as many hit points as two or three battlestations. On the other hand, the ability to customize races and the need to choose amongst alternative technologies are great improvements.

14 yearold antaran killer

This is one of the best turn based strategy games ever. You can choose from 13 already made races or make your own. This game is not for idiots it does not come with directions you got to figure it out on your own, if you need help it has on game help on the game (duh) to get you going. The hardest part is probably when your desighning your own race there are just so many choices. This game is not big on graphics or pictures but when your killing Antarans or Silicoids or whatever you wont care. The Antarans are the ancient enemy of the orions and will be coming out of nowhere and killing whatever they find every once in a while. (if you dont what to get attacked choose "lucky" as your race's special ability, it makes the Antarans "overlook" your colonys) If you need help on the game just right click on somthing and you will get a pop-up to help you. I sugest you dont get this game if you hevent played a game like civilization call to power, or any of the civilization games, if you liked them you will like this. And don't worry to much about the antarans you can select for them not to attack at the begining of the game. And also at the begining of the game select tactical combat if you want it to be any fun, without tactical combat when you fight the computer will just say who is the winner but with tactical combat you command every little thing your ships do. There is also this thing called a stellar converter it is not a ship it is a weapon you can put it on a ship or a planet. the stellar converter blows up planets! you can also use it on enemy ships too. But don't worry only small ships will get blown up in one shot bigger ships take quite a few shots with a stellar converter to destroy. But since it is turn based the enemy gets a shot back so don't expect to just keep shooting with the stellar converter. The game has difficulty settings Tutor, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Impossible. So don't worry if your not that good, oh yeah if the enemy has a good ship that you would like just board it and take it over!
This game is great don't be afraid to buy It!

Kill some Antarans for me!!!

Master of Orion II is a game that can be played forever. There are so many different combinations (races and technology) to try. I have really enjoyed the multiplayer games, either over the modem, or having a few people play on my one machine, turned based. The game has can be made short or long by the settings you choose. The best space strategic tactical comabt game around!!
