Immersive and Engulfing Strategy Game

Excellent strategy game with wonderful user interface and a learning curve of about 1/2 hour. Excellent online Info answers most questions that are not answered by the right-click popups for nearly all game controls and items. The jewel case edition includes the 176 page manual on disk as a .pdf file, though the manual will be consulted by most players only out of curiosity or for anecdotal information. Other reviewers have spoken all the words of praise I could lavish on this game. I find it not only "immersive" but engulfing! Twice I have stayed awake until 3:00 am playing, simply unable to resist "one more turn." I also have this games lineal successor and I find MOO2 to be a much better game in every respect.

Amazing...I still can't get over that out of the 70+ reviews, this game gets an *average* of 5 stars -- incredible, and deserved.
I remember when this game came out, I would simply turn off the lights and enjoy this game in pitch-black. I know a lot of people associate that kind of behaviour with Doom3 or Silent Hill these days, but I guess it was a simpler time way back in the 90's. Trust me, you won't have any reason to jump out of your chair (unlike MoO3). The ease, simplicity, and enjoyability with which the game designers innundate you with what you need to know to play this game is probably one of the most relaxing and enjoyable experiences I've ever had with a computer. I'm glad that Civ IV kept that spirit intact as well.
Buy this game - I bought it at full price when it came out, and got a second copy at nearly that price when my original got scratched. It's a steal in the bargain bin!

Microprose's best game, and possibly the best game ever, was the original Sid Meier's Civilization. If you liked that game (and anyone who's played it should), then you'll like this too. If you are looking for a sequel to Civilization, check out Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (a great game in it's own right); this game is different. It has many of the civilization building elements of Civ but set in a galactic conquest setting. This game is geared much more to stratigic combat than Civ while still retaining all the empire building qualities. Put simply, if you like strategy games, this should be in your collection.
At ... this game is a steal (and low risk) so get it before it's unavailable.

The Master of Orion games are very entertaining if you enjoy the build resources and expansion, conquer themes. The different races make is interesting, and it can be done multiplayer.
Down sides. Refitting your ships constantly can take a bit, especially when you have to go back and refit or get rid of yoru old ones. And in the solo game, you can tell it to keep passing turns until something actually happens, making the downtime a lot less. Not so for Muliplayer. you could each be sitting there passing your turn back and forth for awhile before you actually want to do another turn
The best sci-fi strategy game of the old millenium

There hasn't been a strategy game like this since the original Master Of Orion. A game that immediately puts the user in a trance-like state of must-play-one-more-turn mode. Unlike some games in this genre that was released around the same time, MOO2 is much easier to get into. Perhaps its the intuitive interface or the adjustable difficulty setting, or the gradual learning curve, whatever the case, once you start playing this game in earnest, you will find it more and more enjoyable as you discover all the multifaceted aspects of this game such as diplomacy, combat, exploration, research, espionage, etc.
Despite the somewhat outdated graphics, I would still highly recommend this game to anyone who has ever played or considered playing a strategy game. You'll be glad you picked it up!

No one game has ever come to be as fun and exciting as this one. By picking the characteristics of you race, the people that you control in the game, one can determine the fate of the game from the very beginning. He can be a fighter whose combat skills are far beyond those of the other characters. Or he can become a master spy and never work for the technologies that can help rule the galaxy. Or he can be a super producer and make more ships, buildings, colonies and more, so that he suffocates his enemies. And there are so many more combinations of great players. This is the ultimate strategy game, and the next one promises to be even more exciting.
Still the best

This game is still the best in turn based space strategy. Its intuitive interface, ease of learning/difficulty of mastery, fun space combat and ability to micromanage everything that matters are unsurpassed to this day (and the wannabe successor MoO3 doesn't even get anywhere near MoO2 in terms of fun).
But the greatest feature is the replayability. I own this game since it came out in 1996 and I still play it every other month. Be it wanting to try out a new custom race, attempting a new path of technology, or just wanting to wreak havoc upon a galaxy, leaving a path of 'stellarly converted' planets behind you (aka Alderaan hehe), a new game of MoO2 is fun every time, even after 7 years... There are not many games I can say that about... A true Master....

This game is wonderful. You can read it in all of those reviews. But what makes this game a truly masterpiece is it's user interface. EVERY element of the screen has a help window available through right mouse click. There is also a huge user guidebook with everything described. MASTERPIECE!
I recommend it for Computer Science students to see how a good UI should look like and how should it work.

I played this game so much that the CD actually cracked while in my drive (I didn't even know that could happen). A great balance of building and killing. While the tactical combat is fun most of the time, there is an auto feature (which is a great asset). I wish the AI was better but, overall, it's the best space-game I've ever seen.
This game will make your Top Ten List!

Master of Orion II is simply awesome. Excellent story line. Excellent playability. Science fiction at its best. One of those games that most never forget. This game does not require cutting edge systems, vid cards, and 3d accelerators. It sells itself on sheer content. Best of all- Its only 10 Bucks!
Your success depends on production, research, economy, and diplomacy. If you understand aliens, starships, stargates, cloaking devices, tractor beams, battlebots, space stations, interdiction fields, stellar converters, hyperspace travel, time/space anomolies, and so forth... This is your cup of tea!
