Resident Evil Code Veronica is the fifth addition to the series (RE1, RE2, RE3, RE:Survivor) breezing from the Dreamcast to Playstation2. What ties survival horror fans to the Resident Evil games is the characters and familiarity with characters. Code Veronica features Claire Redfield, who attempts to track down her brother , Chris, after the events of the previous installments. Along her action-adventure packed journey from Rockfort Island to Antarctica, Claire joins forces with the headstrong Steve Burnside and is confronted with a series of relentless foes, including good ol' zombies. New enemies include the skull crushing Bandersnatch, the Albanoid creature, and some of the most panic-inducing bosses you'll ever have to face.
Code Veronica steps up drastcially in terms of graphics. There's amazing face polygon structure and detail to all of the characters and enemies. The entire game is in 3D real time. You won't find any pre-rendered backgrounds here. Although some of the character animation is a bit stiff, there are a variety of good effects going from lighting to the physics of the water to weather effects. The camera is more mobile than static and produces some cool, if not, terrifying shots. Voice acting is definitely better than most titles in this genre and so are the accompanying cut scenes, of which there are many rendered FMV sequences. All these assets work together to produce an immersive, interactive, gut wrenching slice of entertainment that many future survival horror games will continue to compete with. Code Veronica sort of stands alone in its entirety, but it has certainly paved the way for survival horror, a genre that Capcom continues to reinvent with every new game.

I am a huge Resident Evil fan, and I saw this game beat on my friend's Dreamcast years ago when it first came out. I guess this satisfied my appetite for it, because I never played again it until recently, and this time it was the PSX2 version. But even though I knew what was going to happen, I found myself really enjoying this game. It has a dark, creepy atmosphere, and the storyline is one of the richest in the Resident Evil series to date.
I don't really see much of a difference between the graphics of this version and what I remember from the one on Dreamcast. Some people say that they have been tweaked a little, but if that's true, it's a very little. There are several additonal cut scenes such as Claire meeting Wesker in her own quest. In the Dreamcast version, he didn't appear until Chris entered the picture. And the ending in this one is way better and longer than on Dreamcast, featuring a hand to hand fight between Chris and Wesker that wasn't there before.
It is kind of too bad that this game made it out for the Dreamcast before the PSX2, because this game really doesn't use the full power of the PSX2's graphics capabilities. It is mainly a Dreamcast port with a few extras. Overall the graphics are very well done, they're just a little dated by today's standards, which seems funny because we're still playing on the same system. The new Resident Evil 4 is supposed to leave this game in the dust, and it will be making its PSX2 debut in a few months. So we'll see just what the PSX2 can do with this series then.
Another problem I had with this game is that we can no longer blow the zombies heads off like in previous versions. What's up with that? That was always my favorite part of Resident Evil. Capcom, there's no need to tone this series down. It's made for adults and we're all mature enough to handle it. Supposedly from what I've read, this little issue has been fixed in RE4, so maybe they got the message.
I found this to be the easiest RE to date in terms of enemies but hardest in terms of strategy. Yes, I was one of those chumps that had to restart the game over from the middle because I didn't plan out Chris's game clearly in advance. Kind of annoying. A word of advice, take the fire extinguisher with you and stash it in an item chest. That is all. It seems like you're always running around trying to figure out where to get some key or place some object that you found. It can be quite challenging at times, especially if you don't use a hintbook, which I didn't until the very end of the game.
Overall though, a very solid entry into the Resident Evil genre. I'm really looking forward to RE4, which many are saying is the greatest in the series yet.
Fun game but too much running around and not enough ammo

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X has a great story plot. Fun action and many things to do. But there is a constant running around, and you are always in need of the guide to play the game. You continue through the game, only to remember you have forgotten a certain item in the deposit box and it gets very annoying becuase you can only carry like 5 things at a time. Your saves are limited, and you have extremely low ammo. The directional buttons are extremely strange and you spend the first hours of the game learning how to move your character. Since you can't move right you are constantly getting bit by zombies and losing health which you can't recover because there are barely any green herbs.
This is a great game for people who like to have challenge. But if you like fun/scary zombie kicking butt games with somewhat some challenge and action this is not the game for you at all

I loved this game I have played other Resident Evil games before and I thought this one is the best I have played. It took me about 2 months to beat this game and I love the challenge. The graphics were great and as all the other Resident Evil games you get to switch characters. You still get Claire and there is also Chris (her brother) but now you get Steve. If you want a good game buy this one! I purchased Resident Evil Dead Aim and I was very disappointed in it. The graphics were cool but the game was way to short. So for the money I would suggest this one.
Awesome game before and after!

since 1996 Resident Evil has wowed every person who played it. Now, in 2002, the legacy of Resident Evil lives on. Sure, Re 1, 2, 3, and re code:veronica for the dreamcast were absolutely FABULOUS for the times that they came out,but in this recv remake, you get wowed in a different way. RECV for the ps2 takes resident Evil to a new extreme. With improved graphics, sound, and added footage, recv for the ps2 makes a mark in gaming history. Buy it,enjoy it, and even when you beat it, recv for the ps2 has amazing replay value! (but i wont tell you how!)RECV for the PS2 is a must buy for any survival horror genre game lover!

I Just beat this game a couple days ago and let me say that it was really dissapointing. Its not the graphics are bad, they are fine. It wasnt the controls they are basically the same as Re 1, 2, 3. There just wasnt that extra something to make it intresting, The cut scenes seemed lame, I was basically bored the whole time playing the game and don't remember ever really having that excitment thing going at any parts. Beating the game was more of a relief than anything, This game will never be played by me again. 1 more thing it seemed like in this game the puzzles were just annoying, You easily have to spend 3 hours gametime just running back and fourth with nothing to kill and it just gets frustrating. I like the RE series but this one is a Letdown, But still, You have to have it for your RE collection.
Oldie but Goodie

I bought my copy last week (July 2003) and I've been enjoying it a lot. However, it is exactly, in every way, what I expected: that is to say, it is another Resident Evil game.
Resident Evil 2 was my introduction to the series, and so perhaps I am biased, but that is still my favorite, with a perfect balance of puzzles, zombie-blasting and nasty bosses. (Can't wait 'till my buddy gets the remake for his Cube.) Code: Veronica seems to be a little more on the long side. But don't get me wrong, I'm not really complaining, because that adds to the whole "I may die at any second and I'm running low on ammo and HOLY **** WHAT WAS THAT?!" kind of feel. The graphics are not bad at all for such an early release. The plot is one of the best, and the voice acting is not horrible for once. You start out as Claire, the college girl from RES2 and my personal favorite of the characters, and then later progress to Chris from RES1. The controls, and the set camera angles, are hard to get a handle on at first...unless, of course, you already have played some of the earlier games. If so, you'll be happily (?) dodging zombies and blasting Bandersnatches away like the pro you are.
If you liked the earlier Resident Evil games, chances are you'll like this one, 'cause it's basically more of the same. Decent selection of weapons, decent graphics, and Claire (even cooler this time around the Umbrella block). It's a worthwhile way to spend fifteen or twenty bucks.
---An important note: if you've only ever played or seen a Resident Evil game on someone's Gamecube and are now wanting more of the same on your PS2, rent it first. The gameplay is more stilted, there's less ammo and a lot of zombies, and the graphics will sorely dissapoint you.---
