If there is one thing I've learned about video games, it's that you should never play a newer game and work your way back to older games. Let's take this game for example. I have Resident Evil 4 for the Wii and I absolutely loved it. I decided to get another RE game and settled on this one based on the semi-good reviews. Boy, was I disappointed.
One of the biggest disappointments is the camera angles. Sometimes you're facing one way in a scene and in the next scene, you're facing another way so if you have difficulty with the controls, it's harder to figure out exactly what to do just to move your character in a straight line. Sometimes the camera doesn't move along with your movements so you can't see everything and (in my case at least), I missed a few items that I could've used in the game.
As mentioned above, the controls are also hard. I'm not a huge gamer so the straight-forward controls (meaning left is left, right is right, etc.) are what I like. In Code Veronica X, it's almost opposite. And when you have zombies coming at you from every which way, it gets frustrating when you can't figure out how the heck to run away. Mix that with aiming your weapons and it's borderline impossible to get from point A to point B.
A few other notable things that irritated me were the multiple zombies, the difficult "puzzles", the slow movement of the character, and the loading time of some scenes. The zombies will come at you 3, 4, or 5 at a time on occasion, making it nearly impossible to come out of a situation unharmed. And when you get hurt, you walk SO. DARN. SLOW. When you have to move across the entire island because you forgot something, this becomes incredibly annoying. I wouldn't say that i'm impatient but when you leave/enter any room, it cuts to a loading screen which takes forever to load. Not a huge flaw but definitely worth mentioning. The one thing that I like about this game is the "puzzles", or having to figure out what you have to do or which item you need in order to make it to the next part of the game. The "puzzles" in this game are certainly not easy and I've had to look up some tips on the internet when I get stuck.
Yes, there are a couple of things I like about this game. As mentioned already, I like that this game has you figuring out what exactly you need to do in order to beat the game. It's not just about killing zombies. I also like that there are cut scenes that tell a story.
I do think this game could have been good if the controls and camera angles were fixed. If you're interested in RE games, I'd start with the very first game and work your way up so you won't be disappointed. If you're a casual gamer and/or you've played newer RE games, I'd skip this one. If I had a choice, I'd rate this game 2.5 stars rather than 2 but I don't think it's worthy of 3 stars.

This is a classic and a great game. There are some really scary moments as well as some odd twists. Let's just say that people aren't who they seem to be! Haha. You have to own this game.

I Just beat this game a couple days ago and let me say that it was really dissapointing. Its not the graphics are bad, they are fine. It wasnt the controls they are basically the same as Re 1, 2, 3. There just wasnt that extra something to make it intresting, The cut scenes seemed lame, I was basically bored the whole time playing the game and don't remember ever really having that excitment thing going at any parts. Beating the game was more of a relief than anything, This game will never be played by me again. 1 more thing it seemed like in this game the puzzles were just annoying, You easily have to spend 3 hours gametime just running back and fourth with nothing to kill and it just gets frustrating. I like the RE series but this one is a Letdown, But still, You have to have it for your RE collection.

This game plain sucks! Maybe five years ago it was cutting edge, but today it's so slow and ponderous it'll drive you INSANE. You have to go through the whole b.s. beginning story each replay and the characters are so stiff and wooden, you struggle to move and maneuver them when all you really want to do is kill a bunch of friggin' zombies. If you've played any game that gives it's players even a little play of movement, this will be a major step back for you.

I truly enjoyed this game. Being a fan of the Resident Evil franchise, I felt it necessary to experience the whole story and background of the Resident Evil world. I even went so far as to purchase a Nintendo GameCube, just so I could play the Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil Zero. Though Resident Evil Code Veronica X is not as keen on graphics as the most recent incarnations, it is still a quality gaming experience. The bottom line, if you are a fan of Resident Evil, then you cannot pass on this game!

Hey there, lemme tell ya about a little game I played for the Sega Dreamcast way back in the day. It was called RE Code Veronica and it was the next installment, that Capcom gave us, dealing with RE and it's HUGE following. The game pulled off ok in alot of respects because of the obvious graphics and sound improvements. However, for me it just didn't seem to have the same pull that RE 2 or RE 3 did.
Now we look at RE Code Veronia X for the PSX 2, once again Capcom seemed to have an idea of what they wanted us to experience. Graphics and sound aside, which of course were nice, the game didn't seem to have alot of that extra UMPF! that the other games have had.
Don't get me wrong... I liked the game but the reason I have given it a lower rating overall from RE 2 and RE 3 is because I just couldn't pull myself into the original RE CV or the rereleased RE CV X games. I'm thinking maybe it was the fact that by this time I was getting kind of tired of dealing with zombies... like Silent Hill eventually loosing it's steam with "Disturbing" images. I was feeling all zombied-out... they just were not scary anymore... but thats for my Resident Evil 4 review.
In closing I'd suggest getting this game over the original RE Code Veronica for Dreamcast anyday. As for getting this game because you are looking for something "Scary" or heartpounding to play... maybe try RE 2 or Silent Hill 2. One last thing, as I have said with Resident Evil 2 and 3 I will not and would not pick those or this title up for the Gamecube, they are nothing more than just a port... not a remake as they should have been.

man, i think this is the worst disgrace for the resident evil franchise, the controls make the game ****, they tried to make a new type of control scheme, but that ruined the whole game, the way to get the uzis is ridiculous, you simply walk up to a body and get them...
what was a guy with double uzis doing in a level 3 security (middle level of security) prison?
and still i don't like the ink ribbon thing, i preffer to simply click near a typewriter and save
Does "X" marks the spot? **Spoiler Alert**

Code Veronica: X is, without a doubt, the hardest Resident Evil game in the franchise to date (and that includes the most recent addition, Resident Evil 4). This PlayStation 2 version is an improvement over the Sega Dreamcast version mainly because of longer cutscenes that help to explain the backstory of the Umbrella Corporation and Albert Wesker's involvement.
There are a lot of monsters and bosses in this game - some are extremely hardy and take a lot of effort to defeat, others can simply be ignored to save your ammunition for later (trust me, you'll be needing all of it).
It doesn't have the same scares as the first few versions; there are not many moments that will grab you and chill you to the bone as the first Resident Evil did on the orignial Playstation.
So what makes a Resident Evil fan a true fan?
Two words: Rocket Launcher.
It's commonly known amongst Resident Evil fans that by finishing a Resident Evil game within a set time limit, you are rewarded with uberweaponry to use during your next play-through. The rewards (depending on the Resident Evil game you finish) can be anything from a laser to a Magnum with limitless rounds - but the common link between all of them is the ability to earn a rocket launcher.
Capcom decided to make it extremely difficult to obtain the rocket launcher in Code Veronica: X. Here are the requirements (like them or loathe them) to get it:
During the course of the game,
(1) You cannot use any First Aid sprays
(2) You cannot use the 'Retry?' option
(3) You cannot save your game, except for one "free" save halfway through the game
(4) You must save your partner character "Steve" quickly from one of the trap rooms
(5) You must give a "hemostat" medicine bottle to a secondary character
(6) And most importantly: you MUST finish the entire game in under 4 hours and 30 minutes. Watching movie cutscenes counts against your time.
These are the most stringent demands to ever be put upon a Resident Evil player.
In my humble opinion, Capcom almost made this TOO hard. A player has to be extremely sparing with ammunition, as every single bullet counts. It is clearly stated in the instruction manual to avoid as many zombies/monsters as possible to conserve your rounds for the bigger dangers that surely lay ahead, and having to save bullets when you don't know what's coming is a difficult task the first time around.
Also, let's consider that time limit. Most gamers may not have a 2.5 hour block of uninterrupted time to finish a game, and I mean _completely_ uninterrupted. Pausing the game will not stop the clock from ticking - it only stops after the last credit has rolled.
There are at least 3 moments in this game where the player will have to face a moment of "live or die". This means a player could be more than 3/4 of the way through the game, get killed in a trap, and would have to start over again from the halfway point. I can honestly say that this is the most infuriating part of Code Veronica: X - while quite a few gamers will finish, some will never attempt to replay to earn the rocket launcher.
The camera angles are also an annoyance. Set backgrounds with a 3rd person character cause a lot of frustration because your character can be in a room that looks clear, take 2 steps, and be within arms reach of 4 zombies that you never saw because of the camera angle.
If you're a true Survival Horror fan, this game is bound to keep you entertained and you'll have many hours of replay ahead of you trying to earn the rocket launcher.
For the brand new survivalist, it would be best to try Resident Evil 1, 2, or 4 before gnashing your teeth into Code Veronica: X. it's best to learn to crawl before you walk.
Happy Hunting!
