This is an action packed game which will keep you going for some time. The slow motion (matrix) gameplay allows you to beat the enemy who have outnumbered you. There are many various types of weapons ranging from explosive coctails to sniper rifles. With the sniper rifle, you can see bullets in action as they pierce the enemy. I definately don't regret buying this game.

This game is outstanding. The graphics are great, and the bullet time (matrix style) feature is sick. The game is a little hard to learn at first, but then you find a way to kill absolutely everyone in sight. Only cons to this game are the nightmare boards and the small repetoire of weapons. although the weapons that you do have handle matters nicely. Buy this game.

This game is great!! The slow down action is cool. It's like the focus in the matrix. You can dodge bullets when in this mode, & everything is enhanced. You can see the blast of your sawed off & the bullet. I like it better then GTA Vice city. Vice city is a better game overall. I just prefer Max Payne. The gore, gun play, & the underworld people are fun to interact with. The story is really good. The intro to the game is nice. You start out at home finding your wife & kid dead.. Ugh. What a start.

I can't wait to get the Xbox version. I'm very jealous of you Xbox owners. I know the games much better on your system. I might buy a Xbox just for this game. The PS2 version is GOOD!! But has glitches & the framerate isn't as good as it should be. Without those flaws on the Xbox version its a must to get..

I'll tell you now, this game is bloody and gorey, worse than Vice City (personally I've never found anything too bad in Vice City.) You play as Max Payne in the game, a good guy who has a wife and a young kid. But one day when he comes home he finds his wife and child murdered, Max seeks revenge on the people that did it. The game spans three "chapters" and over 30 levels.

The graphics are great, and the features "Bullet Time", a unique feature that is alot like the Matrix's slow motion gun scenes. The levels are varied and features fully destructible environments. If you like Vice City, you will like this game, considering they are both made by Rockstar.

I loved playing this game, got into so much that I forgot alot of everything else. I found the game phenomenal and found the storyline pulling you in like a classic movie. The gameplay was easy after a few minutes to get used to and I had absolutely NO trouble taking out four or five gangsters while using my dual Ingrams....probably one of the best games I have ever played.

I was hesitent buying this game, but now that I have, I am very glad that I did. If you are into the Grand Theft Auto Series, you will also like this game. It also deals with a mob, and any game with a mob in it is awesome. It isn't as good as GTA, but it is still really fun. Buy this game.

Max Payne is my opinion of the way games ought to be made. Tons of action, lots of guns, lots of ammo, a good story line and wonderful graphics. Most games nowadays want to wow you with the graphics and special features and put no time or effort into making the game fun to play (think Spinter Cell). This game has lots of gun play including the "bullet time" function which allows you to go into slow-motion with real-time aiming while running, jumping, diving or rolling. Also, instead of having to find power-ups to refuel your "bullet-time," killing people is what refuels it. This makes it very ready to use as long as you're pretty confident you can kill whoever you're using it against. Also, the story is moved along inside the game, meaning that it starts with you walking in on the druggie who just killed your kid and wife and now you have to put a cap in their [behind].

It does have a couple of drawbacks, but nothing to take away from its five-stars:
1. My Lord is the writing and voice-acting horendous. Possibly the worst ever done.
2. Nightmare scenes - there are levels where you have to play your way through Max's nightmares. One word - Annoying!
3. Load times - put some popcorn in, the game will finaly start when you get back.

Aside from those - GREAT GAME!! (and its only twenty bucks)

This game is the best third person shooter ever invented, there is cool weapons like molotovs, baseball bats, m16 and grenades. It is really fun when you see a druggie sitting on the floor reciting strange words and then you walk up to him and beat him with a bat or burn him to death with a molotov. This game does'nt seem like it should be rated m but there is alot of blood and adult themes like hookers, drugs and some wiseguys with dirty mouths so keep this away from the kiddies.

Graphics 8.5/10
This isn't what counts. As it is a PS2, they could improve the characters a little, improve them like they are in Ghost Recon. There is a lot of fire in this game but no smoke. I'm wondering why we aren't suffocating. Minor flaw. the biggest problem (as well as the biggest problem in the game) is the Frame rate per minute. the FPM kind of lags a lot during gameplay, but after a while you really get used to it, and the gameplay still remains high

Gameplay 7.5/10
The only problem I have with this game is the camera and sometimes the unfair surprise of explosions, causing the game to spend about 2 minutes loading again. Otherwise the gameplay was smooth and rather fun

this game does have the tendacy to get EXTREMELY boring, so beware

Storyline 6/10
Ehhh... it's pretty much like every other PS2 game out there. You're framed for murder and you go out to seek revenge/solitude. The whole wife and baby deal comes into play a lot in this game.

the voices suck in this game, the writing is even worse. they sound like a loser i know in the seventh grade.

Controls 9.5/10
Nicely done. the trigger button is r1, which i really respect. it takes about 5 minutes until you memorize the controls completely.

Music and Sounds 6/10
the only reason i gave this section a 6 out of 10 is because of the sole reason that there IS no music during the game. but when there IS music (main menu and some cutscenes) i completely love it. it is mere piano music, but very seductive to my ears. The sounds are superior, as the gunshots sound like gunshots, there are grunts at the right time, and it sounds like you are actually really in a gunfight!

This is not a score where if you multiply it it will come to be 8/10. i would really give this game a 7.5 out of 10.

From the creators of Grand Theft Auto comes the game Max Payne, about a man with nothing to lose. The game starts when Max Payne comes home one evening to find his wife and baby killed by some junkies, of which were on the drug Valkyr, a very illegal and addicting drug. Three years later, now a detective, he's assigned to go undercover and take down very dangerous mobsters, who happen to have connections with his wife and baby's murder. It's time for revenge!!
The game, first of all has a cool strategy. Whoever liked the Matrix will like Bullet Time, where you can slow down time and let Max do a jump to the side while shooting. Really fun! What's also very unusual, but works, is that parts of the game is told in comic strips/a graphic novel. The only thing I don't like is the loading time. The levels are very short, and the loading time up to a minute to load each level and when starting up the game.
The sound of the game is very good. The bullet sound is very realistic and the voice acting is believeable. Like before you kill the mobsters, you can hear some funny quotes, like one man is watching a soap opera, and at the end of the show says what normal soap opera fans WOULD say, while crying!
The graphics are also realistic. Like the bullets flying in the air, and the blood, which is very graphic. The only thing I didn't like about the graphics is the peoples bodies in cutscenes, which looks like PS1 graphics, it looks like the creators got a face and put it on a robot body. Overall, that doesn't take any fun away from the game or the graphics.

The gameplay is not that long, probably only take you four hours, but it's still fun to replay the levels, but the game, to action gamers, is very quick, but to beginners at action games, it's pretty hard.

The game is just about worth buying:$... but could wait a little longer until the price goes down, becuase to some people, it's not a game you want to play all day, like Vice City, but it's worth buying if you like dark settings and loves action.

In all, this game is a must-have for action gamers, but people who are freaked out at blood and is not used to people always dying every second, maybe should not play this game. It has a lot of blood, and can make you freak out when you play the first level, when you find your wife and baby, or when you get to the two nightmare levels, you may have nightmares. There's this scream, that's in the second nightmare level, where's it's the sound of a baby screaming but not a high scream, but a low scream, that won't get out of my ears. To tell you the truth, it freaks me out. But anyone who isn't scared of that will love this game.
I recommend this game!
