This game is an excellent shooter, has good graphics, but it is too easy. I suggest renting it for a week, so you can beat it and give it back.

Bloody Gift!

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and he loves it. He plays it all the time. I'm glad I could get him something that he can get so much enjoyment from. This makes a great gift and if you are buying for yourself, you'll probably spend hours playing it. I recommend it to all who want to buy a PS2 game that is worth the money.

The game is about a cop who goes out on revenge for the killing of his family. It is brutally violent, and you get to play with many realistic weapons and blow lots of people away. You'll really feel like a cop getting sweet and bloody revenge.

And somewhere a baby was crying.

I liked the game alot. The graphics could have been better but they were on the right track. I love the lines, like something out of a 1920's gritty detective novel.
The action is fast and hard, bullet time is very cool. Really I found little to dislike. The load times are a little long. By the real reason for 3 stars instead of 4 was a couple of truely stupid levels. Both were dream style ones, where Max follows a line of blood in space. It is just plain dumb and very annoying. It serves no point.
Other than that I loved the game. Well worth the time playing.

I bought this game an it was worth it. The only real problem I have is with the graphics. In my opinion these graphics are only PSX quality. Kind of like MGS1 graphics. My mom says that I've been spoiled MGS2's graphics. My mom is stupid. Anyway other then the graphics this is a great game. Go out and get it today!

Max Payne is a well made game full of intense action and plot twists. If ever wanted a game where you can have Matrix style gun funs this is the game to get. It's slick, stylish and one of the best games of the year.

Wow!

This game is the most amazing game that has ever been released for PS2 and definetly XBox. Yeah, the controllers take a while to get used to, but once you do, this game becomes addictive. Some people say the game is too short, which isn't true at all. There are three PARTS, like a book. Each part has about seven CHAPTERS, and in between chapters there are dream sequences. These dream sequences are the only things in this game that I don't like. The third dream sequence takes place in a dark place with blood stains that you have to follow, and loud screaming as background noise. Playing this level late at night on a 57" TV is very freaky. The game takes about a day to finish, unless you cheat. The bullet-time is crazy off the hook, that was the coolest part of the game, I couldn't get enough of the Matrix dives, it's the best way to take out ten people before you even hit the ground. The game has a great story line, and the voice acting, although horrible, is hilarious, and so are the faces that Max Payne makes during the comic book sequences. The loading time ... it takes about thirty seconds on PS2 and about five minutes on my computer. Overlooking, this, the one other problem is the level that takes place in the fire, it is almost imossible to beat the level, it took like an hour for me to finish, way too hard. Overall, this game is amazing in every aspect, the graphics are great too. It's a must buy, make sure you pick it up right now.

Payne To The Max!

I just bought this game yesterday at [the store]. ...I'm doing pretty good on it for a beginner. I'm doing good 'cause I got cheats for it (Invulnerability, Infinite Bullet-Time, All Weapons) which was really damn cool. Bullet-Time is the greatest feature, esp. if you have a cheat for it. It is so much like 'The Matrix' style gun fight. ... I admit, it was kind of hard to control it at the beginning, but once you play a few times, you'll totally get used to it. ...So if you have a PS2, buy this game. Highly Recommended!

3.5 Stars. One cop with nothing left to lose

Max Payne was one of the first games I played when I bought my Playstation 2. But I hadn't gotten around to purchasing it till recently. Though while still very good, with other games pushing the PS2's graphical power, the Max Payne is looking a little long in the tooth.

Max Payne is a New York detective who's wife and young child are brutally murdured. Three years later, the story is about to come full circle as Payne finally discovers who has shattered his entire world.

Max Payne's biggest strength is it's story. The storyline is very compelling and will make you keep wanting to play the game. Full of mobsters, wise guys, low-lifes, and all around scum bags, the developers are Remedy and Rockstar Games have painted a very dark and gritty picture of the New York underworld. If Max Payne were made into a movie, I'm thinking it could very easily make the transition from game to screen. The cutscenes however leave something to be desired. They consist of comic book style frames with voice overs. But the story does manage to make it's way through them.

Although while still good, Max Payne's graphics are somewhat subpar when you compare them to other games that have been released in the past few years. The character models are somewhat primitive by today's standards. Where as a game like the Getaway has more photo-realistic renderings, Max Payne's are almost stick figure like. What Max Payne'graphics do very well, however, is portray New York City extremely accurately. Everything from the graffitti on the walls to the subway stations has a very "New York feel" to it. The framerate, however, suffers from considerable slowdown. Often time it slows to a crawl. The sounds are very good. Guns have loud "Bangs" and you hear bullet casings hit the ground. The games music is very ominous sounding, giving you a chilling foreshadowing of things to come.

Max Payne's controlls are a little difficult to grasp at first. The targeting reticule consists of a white "dot" in the center of the screen, and you aim by moving the right analog stick. It's a bit tricky and takes some getting used to. One of the game's standout features is Bullet Time. Max can slow down time around him and execute Matrix-like moves. Max Payne restores his health by rummaging in medicine cabinets and closets for painkillers. A bit of a unique change from the standard med-packs and meal rations.

Overall Max Payne is a good game. The only thing really "wrong" is it looks a little dated. Otherwise it's well worth the new Greatest Hits price (even if it's just to pad your game library) and definitley worth the discounted $9.99 PC game price.
