I like it, little on the short side though

Chart a course between the mindless action of Gauntlet and the RPG elements of Diablo and you'll find yourself in Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. Bearing no resemblance to the series on the PC except for the name, locales and most of the third edition rules of Dungeons and Dragons, Dark Alliance may upset longtime fans at first. The story unfolds as the town of Baldur's Gate is besieged with a troublesome new thieves guild. Your character seeks to track them down to reclaim stolen gold, but soon realize there is a much bigger problem at hand. A fell shadow is falling over the land and Baldur's Gate is merely one point in a great upcoming conflict that you are now drawn into. The visuals are flat out gorgeous with environments that are both intricately detailed and quite enormous. The action is viewed from a top down perspective so you can see the entire hordes of orcs and frost giants hot on your trail as well as the witnessing the full extent of the carnage your full scale magic attacks cause. You can get a close up view of your character and other residents through story and menu screens which make you sorely wish for a way to get such a detailed view during battle.
Combat is achieved through straightforward action with most all commands accessable without opening the menu screen. The action is fast and furious although you'll need to employ lots of hit and run tactics until you can find or buy better weapons and armor. Leveling up your characters is easier than tradditonal D&D style games, but your limited to how much you can get built up since enemies don't regenerate and there aren't many optional sidequests. Another gripe is that it's short for an RPG (about 11 Hours) even if its main focus is action. The audio holds its own against the graphics with rich orchestral background music and sharp sound effects. The voice overs are extremely well done and help sell the dramatic story. If you simply are not a fan of action RPG's then none of this is likely to win you over and Baldur's Gate purists will have to have an open mind. For the other 90% of PlayStation 2 owners, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance is absolutely worth checking out and a highly recommended purchase for action RPG fans.

We play it together

This game has been a great way for my stepson and me to spend time together. Since we can both play simultaneously, we are sharing and problem solving together. Other two player games we've tried have not been nearly as interesting. The graphics and movies are very good and clear, the story line is interesting, and it's not too difficult for him at age 8. We're looking forward very much to the sequel coming in April 2004.

Hack-n-Slash RPG You Can Play with a Friend

Don't expect Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance to be one of those deep RPG's where you have to spend hours trying to learn every little detail about the battle system, this is just pure fun with D&D elements thrown in. However, single-player gets boring after a while, so I reccomend anyone who buys or rents this game to play it with a friend, it's much more fun that way.

The graphics are amazing. Towns and dungeons are extremely detailed and the shadows and lighting effects add tons of atmosphere to each area. And unlike most RPG's where you equip armor and you can plainly see that your character is still wearing the same shirt he always wears, armors and weapons are clearly being handled by your character on screen. Hell, you can even undress your character down to their underwear if you want.

Out of the three characters you can choose in this game, they rarely speak aside from the occasional grunt when they're hit by something, however, the rest of the characters in the game are rather chatty.

The game plays out kind of like diablo where you hack away at enemies until they die, once they die you gain experience, once you gain enough experience, you gain a level, etc. However, just like Diablo, that gets boring after a while. Fortunately, Dark Alliance includes a two-player mode. If the game didn't feature the ability to play with a friend, I would've given it 4 stars instead. So make sure you have a dedicated friend who's willing to play with you through the wee hours into the night, and you're garunteed to never get bored.

The only real problem is that the game is fairly short and feels like it ended too quickly, but the game is pretty cheap and once you beat the game once, a harder difficulty opens up which could provide an extra challenge. So despite that problem, I still reccomend anyone with a friend to buy this game, all you lonely people might want to rent it first.

I enjoy traditional RPG's and I enjoyed diablo style games. This one takes the best from both and puts them together. A nice story and characters makes this game a lot of fun. New weapons and armour are shown as you get them. Your characters appearence never stays the same.
The villains are tough, but not impossible. The graphics are very sharp and it is just so capitivating. This game is well worth the cash. For the Drow Queen alone ;)

Boring game

I rented this game and lost interest in it before my rental was up. I actually got the final level and realized i had no reason to continue playing. The story becomes uninteresting very quickly. Graphics are good. Control is good. Dialogue is unbearably boring. Levels are redundant.

LOTS of fun!

Sure we beat it in two days, on easy mode, but it took about 14 - 15 hours of play. Its really fun two player game, we had a real good time with it. Yes, its too fast, and the end leaves you hanging and a little miffed that there is no more. Oh well, we'll just start over at a higher difficulty level.

Give this one a shot if you really enjoy playing cooperatively with someone else. It's a good time!

I liked this game very much. I liked how it was just like diablo 2. It had a much better story then on the computer. Although this game was rated Teen, it could have been easily rated Mature. When you kill a monster or human, Pools of blood go everywhere. Not to mention the organs that come out when you kill things too. Overall I enjoyed this game, but slowly got bored of it. Oh yeah, and another thing, I really like how there is a two player mode on this game, it makes it a lot more fun doing co-operative modes with a friend.

Addictive RPG Game

This game was so fun I couldn't stop playing it.I usually don't play RPG's on systems but this one is a must.It felt like I was actually in the game itself. The game is like playing D&D, you can buy weapons, potions, and armor. You get experience points as you go further in the journey. And the monsters that you encounter you can find in the Monster Manuel. The Gauntlet mode is extremely hard to pass. The best character that you can get in the game is in the Gauntlet mode which is a drow. You really don't have a big selection of characters you can pick and the dungeons don't change after you've beaten it like in Diablo. If you don't buy it you should definitely rent it.
