Pretty good, but a bit short...

For one, the games graphics are excellent. No more having to read what everyone says, like in summoner. The fire is pretty good, a little bit better than the fire in Devil May Cry. The water is EXCELLENT, it makes rings and flows. You prolly already know theres 3 characters... Dwarven Fighter, Human Ranger, And my favorite, The Elven Sorcoress. Theres 3 remarkably linear and short chapters. The game also has a limited supply of well, Supplies. The first time I played it, i beat it 2 days later, so if you have a video store near by, Its prolly better to rent it, and test it, before you spend 50 bucks. Theres also a limited selection of spells/skills (only about 8 per character). the game ALSO leaves a MAJOR cliff hanger, so it may be best to buy it closer when the second comes out, so anticipation doesn't overwelm you, like me. the game has little in comon with the PC versions, besides same monster types, and a few city's are mentioned that are in the PC versions, like Amn and Baldur's Gate. Well, thats about it, oh and, if your a fan of hack em up, and D&D//Diablo type games, this is a definite game for you!!

P.S. Please excuse my typing errors, if I have any =)

Great Game. But why make it so "Diablo" similar???

This game seems simply amazing. It has everything a real RPG should and must have. Great graphics, sound, gameplay, story line, controls and it's just simply fun to play (especially with a friend in 2ppls co-op quests). What the heck, just one "water movement" effect you will see in the game will make you jump and run across pools and lakes for quite some time.
The only few things that are a bit disappoinitng:
1. Seems that concept of the game is way too similar to Blizzard's "Diablo" game. They made it look differently but characters spells, skills and even storyline are somewhat similar to "Diablo".
2.There should be more characters to choose from. 3 just isn't enough.
3. Seems that archer or sorceress are slightly worse than dwarf. On higher levels of the game it seems arrows and spells don't do as much damage as they should. And it's still much easier to go and slice your enemies with good old mellee weapons.
4. 2 ppls co-op is very fun but it would be alot better if you could play 3ppls co-op, since there are 3 different characters, it would make more sense.
5. Those "jelly" looking monsters leave impression that creators got really lazy and didn't feel like creating more of a "quality" looking enemies.
Other than that, this game seems almost perfect and is a MUST HAVE for anyone who has PS2 and respects RPG games.

Graphics: 5 / 5
Sound: 5 / 5
Gameplay: 5 / 5
Entertainment: 4.5 / 5 (single player), 5 / 5 (2ppls Co-op)
Overall: 5 / 5

ACTION RPG AT ITS BEST!!!

Mixing in a little RPG with slashing action, Baldurs Gate delivers on the most exciting game out for ps2. I play mostly sports games, but this one really caught my attention. Only Halo for xbox delivers on all fronts like BG:DA does. Graphics, gameplay, control, sounds.. all are amazing. The ability to power up your characters makes the game intensify as you progress. This one is truly a hit, if you like action games just buy it. If you dont like RPG's in any way, rent it first, but odds are youll be back to buy it. A great game all around, and should not be missed by anyone. Well, maybe some kids, as their are blood and gore effects, but it doesnt send a bad message, just that realistic!!!

Dark Alliance Shines Brightly On PS2

This game is a testament to programmers who take the time to craft a quality product. It shines in all areas: Gameplay, graphics, sound, control and replay value. Texture work is sharp, characters are highly detailed with lots of polygons, and the environments are all fantastically detailed. Combat is genuinely fun, something that cannot be said for all RPG's. Each of the 3 characters you play has a unique quality, adding lots of replay value. This game truly captures the essence of the Dungeons and Dragons world. My short list of complaints include the wish for more customization of each character (can't roll own stats-bummer)and a little bit of party management would have been nice. These are minor quibbles, however, when you consider the whole package. I have played D&D pen and paper style for over 15 years and have always wanted a quality console version. I have waited over two years for this game to see the light of day, and my patience was rewarded. I completely recommend this game, especially for those of you who like D&D.

Pros: great grapics, great sound, fun to play, simple to learn.
a true classic game for the PS2 in Diablo Fashion
Cons: only one i can even think of is the fact that if you play this you WILL want part 2 which is a little costly but if you buy or own this be sure to buy Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 2 (PS2)
its an adventure spanning 3 chapters (yes that may seem short but the game can take from 10 hours to several days to beat depending on if you play little here and there or blow through it all at once) but honestly i used to own this and had regretted selling it now i have it for the 3rd time and BG DA2 and that makes this worth it especally the fact that you can play as drizzt and also can IMPORT your character into PART 2 making replay value high! its even more fun with a friend *except the platforms that you must jump across in the first chapter doing this 2 player can be annoyingly difficult just have your friend take a dive off the side there till you get through it its the Only Hard Part) but the battles are hack n slash diablo esque style fights andand the bosses *last one made quite an impresion* are awesome and well voiced by the talented voice actors 5 star all the way and worth every penny especally if you liked Champions of Norrath or Champions at Arms also sweet games.

I enjoyed it.

BALDUR'S GATE: DARK ALLIANCE turned out to be a better game than I expected it to be. I got it on discount and didn't think it would be that entertaining, but it looked different and I was in the mood for something more action/role-playing oriented, so I picked it up.

I got involved right after I started and played on and off for three days until I beat the game. The game is basically an action/adventure game with some extras that make it feel like a role playing game, though as many die-hard D&D people point out, "It's not a true role-playing game."

The plot of the story goes something like this: you're a stranger to the city of Baldur's Gate. Not long after arriving, you are robbed and beaten by a gang of thieves. However, before they can kill you the city guard shows up and the gang runs away. You enter the Elfsong Inn and talked to the woman who runs the place. She tells you she will pay you some money if you will kill all the rats in the basement. You agree and she gives you a rusty knife. That's where the adventure begins. There are three main sections to the story involving somewhere around 30 different levels. Along the way you fight rats, ogres, giants, a beholder, lots of evil men, a dragon, and all sorts of other creatures.

At the beginning of the game you are allowed to choose between one of three characters: an elf maiden, a archer man, and a dwarf warrior. Of the three, the dwarf is my favorite because he's able to carry more booty than anyone else. The elf maiden is probably the most difficult character because she's mainly a magician and even when you reach the end of the game, her spells aren't that powerful. The more creatures you kill, the more experience points you get and the more levels you move up. The higher your experience, the more abilities you are capable of doing.

The graphics DARK ALLIANCE were pretty cool and I really liked how you could rotate the screen around to look around objects. However, there are certain areas where this feature is not available. Dialogue between characters is mainly done through an option of selecting some pre-chosen lines. Usually if you choose the first option, you'll hear everything the characters will tell you.

Overall, I found DARK ALLIANCE to be enjoyable. It engulfed me for almost three days and I don't regret the time I spent playing it. Serious role players and serious gamers might not get as much out of it, but for the average joe, it's a good game.

Fun, but no substance

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is pretty fun, but short, and it lacks much in the way of a story. Just to mention, it is nothing like it's namesake (The computer series). It is basically just a hack n' slash action RPG. Not the worst of that type of game, but it is far from the best.

The gameplay is fairly basic. You run around each map, and kill everything, using your class' skill: As a sorceress, you cast spells, as an archer you use bows, and as the dwarf you slaughter with normal attacks. It is actually pretty hard, I died a lot, especially fighting rats in the dungeon while level 1. It follows the grand tradition of D&D games, in that you are basically worthless at low levels. It is pretty well done, but there really isn't anything which makes it stand out, especially because it has almost no story. You just sort of go on an adventure.

Dark Alliance has pretty okay graphics. The lighting effects on spells and stuff are cool, as is the water. It just wasn't all that detailed. Even if they were excellent, the zoomed out overhead camera makes it hard to appreciate. Some said the death animations were great. I didn't notice. It also has very nice music, but it is rarely played, for some reason.

All in all, Baldur's Gate is okay. It is very short (10-15 hours), but it has good replay value. It also has fun co-op multiplayer, which I enjoyed quite a bit. There are lots of better games to play, but this would be good for a rental. Just for fun.

Great Game - for a couple of days...

Excellent graphics, great controls, and D&D 3rd edition rules combine for an outstanding RPG game. Unfortunately, it's shortcomings are important: Limited character types (only three of the myriad 3rd edition options are available), and length of gameplay (12-15 hours per character). I'm not disappointed that I bought it, but most people would probably prefer to rent it (on a five day rental you should be able to play through the game at least once) rather than buy it. Absolutely a five-star game if it required 30-40 hours to play through it.

A great action RPG

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance provides the player with fast action gameplay while providing RPG elements. The gameplay can best be compared to Diablo (without the mouse clicking) and with two players feels like playing a modern day version of the original Gauntlet. The Role Playing Game (RPG) elements are pretty simple to understand for people not accustomed to playing console or PC RPGs. The battles are extremely fun at first but I can see why some people may find them repetitive after the 100th time. The game also throws some platform elements into the gameplay. For example jumping over bottom less pits and dodging the various traps you find the the dungeons. I feel this games offers a little bit of everything for most gamers. The graphics are top notch and deliver some of the best graphics on the PS2 to date. A nice feature is the ability to rotate the environments in real time with the right analog stick. My only complaint is that I wish the overall quest could be a bit longer but there are plenty of secrets to open up that add to the replay value.

A fun way to spend some time when you don't want to think

I am a huge fan of the Baldur's Gate/PS: Torment/Fallout games on the PC. I picked up this game thinking I'd have zaney NPC's coming along with me on some huge adventure full of sidequests and crazy fun. When I first started, I was impressed with the graphics and sound, and it seemed rather promising with the characters too. As the game progressed, I quickly found out that it was essentially a Diablo clone (i.e., a massive dungeon crawl). You hack and slash through level upon beautifully-rendered-level, all the while taking trips back to the local store (with your recall potions) to drop off your loot and upgrade your equipment. The sidequests usually involve you talking to someone near the local store, finding the item they are looking for, and returning it to them. Over all, the character interaction is a bare minimum, and the story is rather stretched. Before you know it, the game is over, and you import your character into a harder mode and do it all over (replay value is better with friends around). Pick this up if you want a fun way to kill a couple of hours with some friends (or by yourself). Just don't hope for the traditional BG gaming style and you'll be OK.
