Wonderful game for its time but still popular

This is the first game in the Silent Hill series and for those of you left confused by the third installment(Shame on you for playing out of order) this will clarify most questions you have about the series although some must be answered by the player themselves. The lighting effects and the fog are spectacular( keep in mind this is a ps one game) and the ability to only see within the small radius of the flashlight is equally spooky. I must say that if you like the second or third games you should definitely pick this one up. Goodbye and happy gaming.

Silent Hill is the best game out there. It's pretty scary, but nothing compared to the second and third ones! This one was the best of the series, and after completing it i had to get the second and thrid ones as well! Silent Hill is very addicting! I am anxiously awaiting Silent Hill 4 and Silent Hill the movie!It has mysterious people, creepy monsters, and a very interesting storyline! I would give this game a 5 star rating any time.

You're driving down the road with your daughter, the radio softly playing against the melancholy background. You glance over to see that she's fallen asleep with the notebook you gave her in her lap. You smile softly, and turn your eyes back on the road. Your eyes suddenly focus on a woman standing in the road. You jerk the steering wheel in a desperate attempt to save her, crash, and black out.

Now, you awaken to find your daughter missing and yourself stranded in the town of Silent Hill.

Welcome to Hell.

This game was pretty fun. No, if I don't like the gameplay of a game, the plot better be outstanding if I'm going to continue to play it. And Silent Hill lives up to the latter.

The gameplay can be rather tedious at times, having to turn and aim Resident-Evil style, though the targeting hits more often that in other turn-shoot games. It's basically a run around and solve stuff type game.

The plot, on the other hand, isn't that simple. The only thing Harry, the main character, knows for sure is that he's in Silent Hill and he's looking for his daughter, and other than that, it's virtually a living drug trip for him. And with the lack of BG music, it does get very spooky at times.

Harry doesn't know what's going on, where he is at times, and who is his ally and enemy. That's the kind of plot that is really interesting.

There isn't much replay value, for once you beat the game, you have access to some hidden weapons that make it easier to kill stuff with. There are a total of 5 endings, one of which is accessible only after you beat the game once.

Silent Hill was the greatest game that I think I will ever play in my entire life. I don't see why its rated for 17, because I'm younger and I was fine. You start out as a man, Harry, whos driving in his car on his way to take a vacation in Silent Hill with his daughter, Cheryl. When his jeep crashes, Harry sees that Cheryl is no longer there, and you have to follow her footsteps. You meet characters such as Alessa, Dahlia (my fav.). This game was so much fun and is guaranteed to scare the crap out of you. The only other games that have come close were Silent Hill 2 and 3.

A Pyschological Thriller

This is not a Resident Evil clone, nor does it follow in its foot steps. Silent Hill gives you a different kind of evil: the pyschological thriller.

The difference between Silent Hill and Resident Evil or others like them is that Silent Hill is pyschologically scary. Resident Evil is set within a realistic world where the horrors that happen are concrete machinations of a tangible force. In other words, its based in reality and has boundaries set within the human world. It is... Explainable. And once you know what exactly is happening to cause all this weirdness, then it's not as scary anymore. The world you tread in becomes a by-product of the entity you're trying to get at. In Silent Hill, you're fighting against the world itself, and you're not sure exactly what is causing all this until the end.

Unlike the jerky, scary "BOO!" moments that Resident Evil plays on, Silent Hill's spookiness GROWS on you with it's creepy environments. The music, sound effects, and graphics are just icky enough to grow on you... Not to shock you. The shocking part comes when you start enountering things that try to kill you. Instead of blasting zombies, you are literally escaping a sort of madness that is trying to envelope the ground you walk on.

There's also no corny voice acting (which Resident Evil is also famous for) to get in the way. Combat is not going to be filled with shotgun blasts and blood spray (although there is a shotgun) because your character isn't designed to be Rambo.

Resident Evil is great, but I would go for the pyschological thriller than a slasher flick. If you're just looking for a game to scare you out of your wits, you can't get any better than these two original hits.

still freaky after all these years

just went back to dust off my copy of silent hill that i beat many moons ago... playing it now at first i was taken aback at how chunky the graphics were. this wasn't how i remembered it. the silent hill i remembered was vivid, disturbing, and insomnia inducing. it was a town i went to visit but wouldn't like to stay in.

now i noticed the repeating textures and areas. the pixelated gradients in the shading. and of course the famous annoying controlls that had me cursing at the damn pink pteridactyl swooping onto my head again.

but by the time i got to the school i'd assimilated myself, i was back in silent hill. now i'll probably stay till the end of the game.

there are so many thoughtfull details that absorb you and take you to another (very scary) place. the dated graphics don't matter. this is a classic!

hard to find... good to own

being the survivla horror fan I am, I have to start by saying that if you happen to see this at a discount store, or bargen bin, pick it up, and hold it close, as the game has become very rare in many areas of the world. This was Konami's answer to Capcom's Resident Evil, and still is one of the most popular horror games today. The game, unlike REsident Evil ,or many other horror games, chooses to scare you in a more mental, quiet sense (not to say resident evil is bad, I'm mearly saying SH and RE are very different form one another). The game is not for the faint of heart, or those with out a healthy ammount of patience, as the game focuses mainly on puzzle soving and exploration. although the graphics are dated by today's standards, this is easilly overlooked once you start playing. Although the game offers a fantasic story, and haunting atmosphere, I highly recomend Silent Hill 2 over the orrigional, as it has better controlls, smoother visuals, and an even better story. I have played many horror games, and believe me when I say that this one and it's sequels stand out amongst the rest, and shoud be added to any games collection. Silent hill is not a game to miss.

Psychological horror in a video game? Who would've imagined.

I have to admit to largely avoiding the Survival Horror genre. Despite the fact that I'm a huge horror buff I guess I just prefer adventure games where I don't have to worry about getting killed. I enjoy getting involved with the story and characters. Along those lines, that flagship of the genre, "Resident Evil", didn't have a story that sounded all that interesting to me. However, I remembered hearing that the "Silent Hill" series focused more on subtle psychological horror than the "jump out of your seat" style of RE. So when I was browsing the games and came across parts three and four I took a glance. The stories sounded interesting, so I gave them a shot. I couldn't start with part three, though; think of the past story elements I might miss. Even though I'd been assured it wasn't necessary to play the previous entries I wasn't about to take the chance. So, I started from the beginning and it turned out to be quite an interesting experience.

The game opens with a short cinematic which doesn't initially make much sense. All that's clear is a man is driving down a mountain road with his daughter when he takes his eyes off the road long enough to crash through the railing. The man's name is Harry Mason and he'll be our sole playable character. When he finally comes to after the crash his daughter, Cheryl, is gone. He catches a brief glimpse of her as she runs off into the fog. Naturally, he follows her as she leads him through the strangely deserted streets of Silent Hill. Then, suddenly, it gets dark and Harry's surroundings take on a very sinister feel: an overturned wheelchair, a bloodied gurney and finally a mutilated body hanging from a fence. At that moment he's attacked by...something. It gets weirder from there.

The story doesn't make much sense until the last third of the game when Harry gets some larger pieces of the puzzle. When the plot is finally revealed some of it should make sense. There are four possible endings to the story(five, if you count the joke ending) depending on which characters live or die during the course of the game.

The main focus of "Silent Hill" is the atmosphere. Harry visits the town in two distinctly different versions(one a foggy daytime/nighttime reality, the other a pitch black nightmare). In either version you'll encounter a number of otherworldly monsters. There are two critical elements that succeed in making this game intense: a radio and viewing distance. First, the radio emits static whenever a monster is nearby. However, due to either the fog or the dark, you can't ever see more than ten feet in front of you. So, when you start hearing static you'll know the monsters are there, even if you can't see them. The static also acts as an auditory compass, allowing you to avoid or confront the monsters. Along with these unique elements are the requisite horror devices. There's a distinct lack of music through much of the game, while at other times there may be either a score or what can only be described as a cacophony of effects. There's the occasional loud noise: sometimes for no reason, whatsoever; other times accompanied by sudden action(this type is fairly infrequent). Not to be overlooked is the fact that your environments are often disturbing or just plain creepy.

The graphics aren't particularly impressive, but they serve their purpose. I can't elaborate further because I played this on an emulator at a higher resolution than you'd get on a genuine PSX. Audio, as noted in the last paragraph, is extremely effective. The voice acting is on par with your standard Saturday morning cartoons(certainly not as horrid as the original Resident Evil). It's hard to blame this solely on the actors, though; the script could use some work.

On the gameplay front we have a standard third person perspective controlling scheme, complete with the usual disadvantages(awkward camera angles). Responsiveness is slow with the hand-to-hand weapons(knife, pickaxe). It's hard to time a hit on an erratically moving target when there's a second or two delay to stab or swing. Since ammo is low, using those weapons is practically a necessity. Overall, though, once you get the hang of moving and fighting the game isn't all that difficult(on Normal, anyway).

Taking it all together, "Silent Hill" is a very good game. It's not without its flaws, but if you're bored with the Sci-Fi trappings of "Resident Evil" and are in the mood for a change, give this a try. Just make sure to give your nerves a rest every so often. Enjoy!

amazingly spooky and gorey

this is much better than your average Resident Evil (i like RE though).this is like an actual simulated horror movie.with many violent twist,turns, and confusion traps.this is a great game that is probably one of the best HORROR games ive ever played.

Dark Terror.

Forget about the repetitive Resident Evil series, this is the only horror game you need to play. The story, one of the most complex out there (With Clock Tower 2's as a close rival) features an ordinary citizen in search of his daughter, in a game whose atmosphere is in many ways similar to that of "Jacob's Ladder", with many psychological terror overtones.

One of the most underrated games in the PSX due its primitive graphic display (Making it even creepier) and game play, let us pray Silent Hill 2 for the PS2 will be more of the same. (Only better and creepier and, of course, remain as underrated as possible, that way the game does not become as crude as the RE series)
