I had this game for my Playstation and LOVED it! Many, MANY hours went into playing ALL the races and ALL the cars.
Then, I moved on up to the dreamcast. Along came Bleam! And I was back at this game again, only with crisper graphics. I love it. The tracks are solid, the cars keep on coming, some suck and some rock. It depends upon whether or not you like rear-wheel drive cars or front-wheel drive ones. etc. etc. My roommate and I had totally different favorite cars and tracks and we each LOVED this game!
Then, I got the PS2 and the MadCatz MC2 steering wheel. The wheel will NOT work with GT3. Among other things, GT3 has limited camera angles and just a few of the cars that THIS game has.
After using the wheel on this game for 2 weeks, i have to say that GT2 is THE best racing game out there for ANY system. And i should know, I have played it on the original playstation, the dreamcast and now PS2.
I have yet to find a driving simulator that does as much as THIS game. The camera angles rock, you can even get a far away view, the cars are realistic, the races challenging and the license tests are excellent.
As far as i am concerned, once this game was released, the world could stop turning with no noticiable affect to me (save the constant darkness or light!)
I love this game. GT3 is OK but THIS game is the meat. All other car games should be compared to THIS masterpiece!
Seriously, it sounds as if i am gushing but this title has lasted me for 3 consoles and I wholly expect it to dominate the PS3 whenver IT comes out!
Best Racing Game Ever

What other game could you get all of these great cars, so many different track, and great cars after you win a race. Its great how they limit the horsepower on most races, unlike the first GT where you could use any car you wanted for any race.

In 1997 Gran Turismo 1 came part of the Playstation empire, when it was released they said that it used nearly all the technology they could squeeze from the PSX console, and it was obvious, Gran Turismo 1 ROCKED!, to say the least and when I heard that they planned on making another one I was suprised, yet excited. The first time they made it they thought the market would be mainly in Japan, so naturally they put alot of japanese cars in it, but the second time, we have american made, thats right--the old mopars and everything, this new game has streched the limits once again. It really is the best game ever for the playstation, just this game alone would keep playstation in business. With new modes like Rally racing (the best thing in the world) and the loooooong.... endurance races have really expanded the imagination, i wouldn't be surpised if pro racers retire just to play this work of art. We had to wait a long time for this game, but that allowed us to have 600 cars and 20 courses, man I can't believe I haven't stopped and played it while typing this, this game is a blast and without a second thought it gets five stars (plus a cookie).
The greatest racing game for the PSX

This is THE complete racing game. Anyone that has any interest whatsoever in cars, racing games, or just video games in general should certainly check these two discs out. One of the coolest features is the fact that you are not only limited to "race" cars. You can also choose a car that is not unlike the one that is sitting in your driveway. Everything from a Dodge Neon to a Ford Taurus to BMWs are in the game, and they all respond just as they would in real life. Plus as an added bonus, there is the rally mode where you can purchase the 4WD cars like the Subarus and tear across the dirt trails. Awesome game.
Very Realistic !

As an SCCA driver in my free time, I can say that this game is the most realistic of any I've ever experienced. I am not a "game jockey" by any means, but GT2 provides you with excellent graphics, and true to form vehicle dynamics. Complete with oversteer, understeer, and 4wheel drift! The only thing you miss is the mega-bucks you spend owning the cars you can experience right in your home. Definatly a 2 thumbs up! And a must for the racers in your family!
The Best, no other can match this.

Without a doubt, the most realistic, most exciting racing game ever created, Gran Turismo is the benchmark of this game genre. And the sequel, GT2, is worthy of its predecessor's laurels. Is it more fun, sure it is. Some things suffer with the new one, however. It seems to have more bugs, but you won't notice it, since you're too busy doing 200 mph at Red Rock Valley in your Toyota GT1 racer. There more cars for you to choose from, all the better to suit any personality. Just race, race, race.
Ruins you for every other racing game

A couple of years ago I had sold my PS console because of waning interest. When GT1 came out, I bought another console just because of that game. GT2 is even better, and there is nothing like it especially if you are a car guy. The graphics, sounds, and driving physics are unmatched. The only problem is, it makes every other racing game a disappointment. (I would also recommend the music companion CD "Music At The Speed Of Sound")
Be a good driver....

...or just get the 2,000,000cr Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak car and you're good to go. Well...I guess you have to be one to get the other. But then again, there's always good old-fashioned patience. Because frankly, Gran Turismo 2 is not going to hand you anything in a hand basket...especially not the aforementioned (best in the game) vehicle. In this game, you have to work for any car worth having. GT2 isn't playing, folks. There are no super cheats or codes (yes, I looked for them) to earn you free credits, skipped races, or magic cars. The best tricks of the game are tips to tune a car properly, which car to use when, and how to avoid spinning out. Yeah, sounds fun, doesn't it?
Well, if you LOVE cars and get off on racing them, this game will be tons of fun for you. Vastly expanded from the original Gran Turismo, GT2 employs practically any car you can think of---from throwback muscle to tuned-out super cars, if you want to drive it, they've got it waiting for you. And not only do they look just as good as if you were seeing them for real, but they sound and FEEL like real cars. Each car has it's own unique driving style and sound, so you'll never be bored...maybe surprised, but never bored. You can customize your own car from the ground up (GT2 lets you customize your wheels this time...yay!) or if you can hold out long enough, you can buy the "special" models from the car distributors.
However, I do have some issues with this game. First of all, the load times can be a bit irritating and it doesn't help when you have to move to so many different screens to get around in the game. Going from a race to another race or back to your garage seem to take forever after saying no to a dozen replays and the save/do not save question that pops up after all races.
Also, I don't take well to formalities in video games. Like the original, GT2 has those wonderful licenses you must obtain in order to race in different competitions. It's like, am I going to be putting lives in danger by playing this game? Why do I need to be tested on everything from braking distance/time to my S-curve technique? I'm not going to listen to the rules anyway, so why put me through it? When it comes down to it, I am awful at those individual trials. Put me in the thick of the action and I can dominate. I just don't get it.
Finally, I wish that the races weren't so predictable and repetitive. Once you get to the point where you know that you are going to win the race before you even leave the starting line, the game gets a little lackluster. All of the other cars follow the same imaginary line (like the license tests make you follow for "optimal performance") every single time out, so I know where they are going before they get there. Why can't cars spin out for no apparent reason (damnit, I do it!) or give me a little competition? Because let's face it, once you get ahead you stay ahead...that is if you have a reasonably suitable car or you don't spin out stupidly at the final turn, of course.
Ah, but I get over the pain of constant winning quickly. I love this game. I wouldn't complain about it so much if I didn't... I wouldn't still be playing it.
P.S. While doing the long, grueling endurance races I recommend turning the sound off and listening to your own music (or nothing, if you prefer) because as much as this game is hailed for its soundtrack choices, they will drive you mad after you hear the same song fifty times in one race.
More of the same?

Don't get me wrong. This is a great game. However, prospective buyers who are looking for a signifigant change from the original Gran Turismo will be greatly disappointed.
With twice as many tracks and four times as many cars, this will seem like a huge improvement, but that's all I see. Gran Turismo 2 seems more to me like a computer equivalent of a level pack released for a game. Other than the new tracks and cars, the game is almost completely identical to the original, apart from new "For Professionals" car upgrades.
Another thing that may shine to prospective buyers is the new rally mode. I can hardly see what anyone could like over a normal race in this. It's just about 10 more tracks where the car can fly. You can't even race against anyone (except for preprogrammed ghost drivers), unless you're in 2 player mode.
On the upside, the new soundtrack is excellent. All the in-race music is great, and the same can be said about the majority of the menus as well.
The bottom line is if you have the original Gran Turismo, you won't find quite as much of a difference nor will you find much new (except for that annoying corkscrew in Laguna Seca that i still have yet to master).
If you're a huge fan of Gran Turismo, get the game. If you want something different (like new physics or a different type of simulation mode), you won't be finding it here.
Better than ever
