Proof that the best never rest!

When the original Gran Turismo showed up on shelves in '98, I had no idea that this would become the greatest racing game of all time. I bought it, sight unseen, and found a game that transcended video gaming! So, it could be concieved that my level of excitement was off the charts when I found out that there was going to be a sequel, and now it's here! The long awaited, much anticipated, Gran Turismo 2 is here, and it's everything that it is expected to be! 400+ cars, ranging from $1,000 to over $2,000,000! 20+ tracks! Almost every manufacturer you could think of, and some you might have never heard of! (but still great cars) 5 racing license catagories! And the best thing? Each car has it's own realistic characteristics, like sounds, handling, etc!

Some say the graphics could be a little better, but don't forget, PS technology (32 bit) is a little old by today's standards. And yes, maybe the competition you race against is a little weak, but not everybody is Mario Andretti, after all, so at least they give the rest of us a chance. If you can deal with those two flaws, you'll find a game that is very worthy of the title "Greatest game ever"!

Bottom line, If you enjoy living a fantasy where you can buy, sell, and race cars worth over a million dollars, and are a master mechanic, tuning everything from $10,000 Daihatsus to $500,000 Porsches, then this is the game you've been searching for! One bit of advice, though... Just make sure your don't make your wife mad by staying up until the crack of dawn playing Gran Turismo 2!

Good, but the first is still better

I could not wait to get my hands on this game when it hit the shelves, and I think my anticipation might have killed some of the fun of this game. First of all let me say that the original GT is my favorite vidoe game of all time. I have had it for 2 years and I still find myself playing it over and over. That being said I am a little disappointed in its sequel. I like the fact that it has more courses and cars, but the play is not as realistic, and I felt the graphics do not look as sharp. I was also not crazy about the soundtrack in the background since it interferes with the sounds made by the cars. I was also not crazy about the varying "gaps" of horsepower limitations for race entries. Some racing stages have jumps where you can only race cars under 400Hp, then the next jump is in the 650HP range. This makes it hard to really "dial in" certain cars and see how effective their new modifications are, without getting your butt kicked by super cars. I do like the new courses, especially racing Laguna Seca. Maybe this would have been a much better game had it not been preceded by the original GT (and it is still better than any other non-GT racing game), but I know I find myself playing the priginal a lot more than the sequel.

This game is great fun!

This game is good. There are tons of cars, like the Suzuki Escudo pikes peak with 981hp, and the Jaguar XJ2200 which can get 975hp. My favourite type after the Escudo is the Nissan Skyline. There are lots of them, each has a nice amount of hp too. They also have good steering. There is another car that I like, its the second special car in the Toyota dealer. I forget what it's called, but it's good. The tracks are difficult at first, unless you've played the first Gran Turismo, then you can pick a car that you hate and bash, smash and make fly into the air. Making it lose the race. I find that extremely entertaining. I suggest tat you try and get all the licences at first then you go to the toyota dealer and buy the used 93'supra. Tune it up, then go to the first race at pure race car championship. You get a Dassin Silvia. You can race it in the second race. You win a Mugen NSX. Sell it, get 250,000 credits, and race that race over an over again to your hearts content. You can make some good money that way. Overall, i think it's a great game that deserves lots, and lots of playing.

Isaac Newton would be proud!

First I have to voice what's wrong with the game. There is no way that any game controller can do this game justice. Even a steering wheel and pedal setup will not be sufficient to correctly translate the game to real-world-like control. The standard Sony Dual Shock controllers offer a poor approximation of car control. The game rewards spasmodic twitching as opposed to the smooth, controlled driver input that is effective in real cars.

But, controllers aside, the rest of the game is fantastic. I would love to see the parameter list the programmers track. Certainly tire temperature and brake temperature are in there. It is uncanny. The programmers have gone a long long way towards accurately modeling real cars' performance characteristics. I was racing one of the low horsepower events and could not get my car to rotate at turn-in. After buying the full-race suspension, I tweaked the rear stabilizer until I was able to induce a nice, controllable trailing throttle oversteer, at which point I simply walked away from my competition!

The designers strayed from accuracy to simplify gameplay to some extent. Aggricultural excursions as well as sheet metal reconfigurations have basically no effect on performace beyond the initial lost time. Yes, it's faster to drive clean, but if you need it, you can always use an outside car to carry you around a corner that you powered a little too deep into. There are a few major ways to improve lap times and these pretty much correspond to what it takes to hot-lap a real car. Basically, in GT2, as well as the real world, exit speed is God. If you are going fast at track-out, you will win. All your moves in every turn need to be focused towards going fast at track-out. Of course, this is a lot easier to say than to do consistently.

The graphics are OK (there are some compromises...) but the beauty of this game is in the accuracy of the physics model. Different cars take markedly different driving styles. If you want a serious case of deja vu, go to Laguna Seca's real web site ... and play the QuickTime video of the complete lap. GT2 can seriously prepare you for some real-world hot laps at the track.

One more caveat: I lost partial feeling in my right thumb after my initial one-month serious infatuation with this game. It took a month for my thumb to return to normal, sort of; the callous is still there...

This is such a cool game. There are hundreds of cars to buy from over 20 different dealers. You can buy from American, Japanese, German, English, Italian, and French dealers. At some places you have the option to buy a used car (tip, buy a used car at the beginning of the game or you'll get stuck with a car that has 22hp. Believe me. I know). This game has magnificant sound. You can here the difference in the engine when you upgrade it and all the small details. If you want to upgrade your car just go to the dealer and select tune. The thing that makes this game better than the first is the fact that instead of just winning money you win new cars too. There are 4 kinds of races. Special, endurance, rally, and gran turismo. Special is just a normal race for different horsepower or drivetrain. Endurance is for people who like 40, 50, 60 or up to 90 laps. You can usually win 150-500,000 for first place. Rally is offroad dirt driving and you need a special car. Sometimes you can win one or you can buy one for 500,000 normally. Gran turismo is racing around the world. You pick races in different countries and race. If you beat the pacific league or the Atlantic you unlock a new set of races. Like the first there is license training but most aren't too hard. The hardest one in my opinion is the super license test where you must beat Laguna Seca with a Viper. It sounds fun but the Viper is always spinning out of control. The rest are fairly easy but getting the gold (tip, if you get a gold on all license tests the you unlock more races) on all is very hard. If you have trouble watch the demo and try to recreate it ecactly. This game is so cool. I bought it a long time ago and it's still practicley the only game I play. BUY IT!!!!

whats up with this guy?

dude if you dont think this game is real maybe u should get yourself a car. it is one of the most realistic games out there. san fransisco rush isnt exactly a realistic game. and if u can only get ure car to 60 mph u are buying one BAD car my first car went 125 or so. and if ure spinning out that much maybe u dont know how to drive. and are there ramps and shortcuts and signs to rundown in REAL races? u surely arent the brightest bulb so dont post reviews like that. in my opinion this game is great and definitely woth 20 dollars. the cars! the tracks (if u can earn them) its lots of fun or hours on end!

GT2 THE REAL DRIVING SIMULATOR

This game is too tight! my cousin got it for me on my birthday(12-31)after the y2k problem passed, we went to his house and stayed up until 7 in the morning playing it. this game is as good if not better than the original. i like the fact that they have 2 discs(1 for arcade mode, and the other for simulation) the best part of the game, hands down, is the selection of cars 594 total! the other good part that makes it better than the original is that you can race the cars that you have bought in the simulation mode against the computer in the arcade mode. you can also load another persons garage with a memory card in slot2. the license tests on this game are very detailed and its exactly the kind of practice you will need to master while trying to beat the game. another thing on this game is when youre in home. next to the garage there is a cup that shows your progress in the game. it tells you how many bronze, silver. and gold cups you got in the license tests, it also tells you what percentage of the game you have beaten (so far ive only beaten about 12%) my goal is to get 100% done with the game. i figure it will take me about 2 years and i still wont be bored of the game because i figure i still wont be finished. i still havent even beaten all of GT1 (because its on the shelf collecting dust, now that i have GT2)

to make it easy for you, get this game. i know it has minor glitches, but its still head and shoulders and arms and elbows and knees and feet above the competition. ITS THAT GOOD! NO JOKE!

ps dont listen to the people giving it bad reviews. those are people that want an easy game to master. this is a REAL simulator. those are probably kids that still dont know how to drive yet. this game is not a little toy that you can easily master. it takes time, but its worth it.

When I opened up Gran Turismo2 for Christmas I was so excited. I got a total of six games and Gran Turismo2 is the only one I ever play. It's so realistic and it's on the highest level of Playstation games or any system for that matter

I Highly recommend this game for any race fan. I agree the first Grand Turismo was hard in some aspects; However, I would totally have to admit that the sequel is far better in many ways. I found a good car to start with is a 91 4X4 Celica. I've won alot of races so far with this one... This comes from someone that doesn't use the Game Shark.

Finally, a good, realistic racing simulator!

I have searched for ever to find a racing simulator that actually simulates real driving/racing. GT2 does that, and with a ton of other fun factors. Graphics are good, not super great, but good. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that they aren't the BEST (see Final Fantasy IX).

The car control is realistic, even more so with a steering wheel. In addition, you can purchase simulation tires for your car which makes it even more close to reality (and therefore much harder to drive). Whevener I race against my friends in the wonderfully designed head to head mode, I always destroy them since they are so used to the unreastic arcade racers, and can't even keep the car going on the straightaways.

The courses offered include somwhere around forty real racecourses from all around the world, accurately rendered and designed to scale. Everything from Laguna Seca, to Grindlewald, to Pikes Peak.

The cars? Don't get me started on the cars. There are over 600, to start with. Some of them can only be won, but most can be bought. The cars are all priced according to their newness, performance, and class. In addition to being able to tune your cars to whatever extent you desire (ie: take a 97hp Diahatsu and make into a 300hp monster that can beat a stock Vector M12) there are specific model or manufacture championships.

There's something special about being able to choose your daily driver car and take it for a spin around Seatle's street course and recognize its handling. The only complaint I have is the lack of any Italian sports cars (Ferrari, Lambourghini, etc.) They do include Porsche, but only as a tuned Ruf version (which is nothing to complain about).

Overall, GT2 is THE best simulation racing game in the world. Viva Polyphony!
