I bought Gran Turismo 2 on a Friday. By Sunday at midnight I would say I put 30 hours into the game. This game has so many cars it's unbelievable. The racing is a little different from GT1 in that most races aren't in a continuos circuit, rather you race on at a time. The license tests considerably easier than GT1 as well. Even the Super License took less than an hour for me to get. The cars look great and are fun to drive. One warning. This game may absorb all of your free time
Tops the original GT.

I've been in racing nirvana since I purchased the original Gran Turismo. It was a groundbreaking title in the racing genre. It had dead-on physics, superb graphics & sound, tight control and the depth and replayability that kept me playing until I got Gran Turismo 2. I waited with much anticipation for GT2's release and I am relieved that the product exceeds my expectations. I had my doubts with all the previews, rumors and hype surrounding this game but now that I have it, I absolutely love it. The first thing that should be mentioned is the shear number of cars that are available. Over 500! New manufacturers include BMW, Ruf (Porsche), Ford, Audi, VW, Renault and a ton more. Also, there are new Japanese manufacturers. And they all have so many makes and models to choose from. The graphics and sound are on par with GT with a noticably more detailed car model. There are some graphics flaws though, like at times two cars will merge into one, the pavement has seams, and in one of the camera angles during the replay, the wheel/tire seems to go through the fenders with a hard bump. These things are very miniscule though and really don't detract from the game at all. There are 23 tracks with some old ones, some reversable and some night races. The new tracks are designed well and the real life Laguna Seca, Pikes Peak and Seattle coarses are a nice touch. You can customize the snot out of you cars and this is really where this game is elevated above other racing titles. This is where the depth of the game can be seen. Adjustments to your car actually affects how the car handles, accelerates, brakes... everything. You can tune it to your liking. Then there is the Rally mode. WOW! I have V-Rally and have played a few other rally titles and I have to say, GT2 Rally is where it's at! GT2 Rally has to be experienced to be appreciated. In fact, Gran Turismo 2 has to be experienced to really know why I rambled on for so long. It's not "played", it is "experienced". Buy it and you will see. It is THE BEST racing game period. Okay-Bye!
A glimpse of what the future holds...

This is a great game, no doubt about it, but as I played it I found myself wondering what Gran Turismo 3 is gonna look like. Racing games have come a long way, and GT2 is a fabulous game, but it doesn't make the quantum leap from the original GT that I was hoping for.
Not that this game isn't a big improvement over the first GT. The new tracks are fantastic, long and challenging (I've had nightmares about Laguna Seca) and the endurance races are a lot of fun if you have a couple of hours to blow. There are hundreds of cars to choose from and scores of races to win.
The game play is superior to GT1, but not enormously so. What is an gigantic improvement over the original is the license tests. I never did get my International-A license in GT1, but I was able to get all the license in the sequel with only a few hundred episodes of screaming and cursing directed toward the screen. I don't have 10 hours a day to devote to hard-wiring my brain for video games, so I was relieved that I wouldn't miss out on half the game the way I did with the original GT.
The biggest complaint I have with the game is that it doesn't punish you enough for veering off course and slamming into the wall. You get punished, sure, you lose speed, but I think it shouldn't be as easy to bounce off retaining walls to gain a better angle on a turn.
That's my biggest complaint with the game. If you like speed, if you feel the need to trade paint with some slowpoke on hairpin turns, if you can't afford a Jaguar XJR but want the thrill of driving one at 218 MPH, this is the game for you.
If your shopping for a teenager, look no further than GT-2

Good clean fun. No violence. Racing on "closed circut" tracks. You won't have your child running over pedestians or killing demons with machine guns here.
Gran Turismo 2 has more than 400 vehicles to choose from, from dozens of well known auto manufacturers. There is even Classic American muscle here. The cars look as nearly as real as a photograph. There are more than 20 tracks. This edition has dirt tracks, drag strips, and asphault. The cars range from supercars to the Honda Civic we commute to work in. The cars can be "tweaked" in every way immaginable. You can adjust the suspension Camber and Damper, ride height, tires, etc. You can add Turbos and performance exhaust. The graphics are fantastic. You can see well into the distance. There is very little "build".
Great replay value. A must buy!

Right now there are 55 reviews on here, and 50 of them are fivestar ones. Some people say the controls for this game are too"hard," try real driving. You can even pick something in the game that makes it even more realistic. Not all video games were meant to be conquered in a week, and the ones that you can do that with aren't worth the money. Practice and earn all the licenses, win some money with an older Celica (or something), then you start winning cars in races, which you can sell or drive. Well, even though this is just one more praise piled on, it's still a great game, and a must have for PSX owners.

Great details and graphics. Compete in cities to mountains, race '67 Cougars to '99 Mustangs SVT Cobras. If you love cars andfixing them up this is a must have. For Mark Martin fans, get a Ford Taurus (the racing modification makes it the #6 valvolne car, with the same paint schem). In a way it's easier but in a way it's harder. If you have the first Gran Torismo don't worry this is much better and will force Gran Torismo #1 forever in its case! There's like at least 100 new cars, (at least) and at least 30 new dealers! WOW!

The original Gran Tourismo was one of the best games I have played on the PSX. Not to say that it did not come with any problems. Optimistically, I looked to GT2 to correct these annoyances I found on the first one. Well, sadly to say GT2 did not, in fact the alterations made things even worse. For starters, they kept the annoying license test and added two more International Classes to obtain. Although, they did make obtaining licenses a little easier, as well as providing demonstrations and the Godsend ability to transfer your license qualifications from the original GT. Unfortunately, you cannot transfer any of your hard earned credits and cars from the original. Moving on. One of the best things about the original GT was the ability to tweak and upgrade your cars. You were allowed to tear apart your mismatched opponents with your over-tweaked 940 HP GTO. Not realisitic, but nevertheless entertaining. GT2 comes with the capability to tweak your cars, but annoyingly, added a maximum HP limit to much of its races. So in essence, the more you power up, the less courses you are allowed to race. Summing up some of the other problems, GT2 has more courses, but did away with most of the set races, where you received credits and a new car at the end of the races if you won. GT2 does not have qualifiers, so you start all your races all the way behind in 6th place. After each race, GT2 automatically puts you in replay mode, regardless if you wish to view it or not. The menu page is constructed in a map format, much like the first. But now, with all the extra dealerships and courses, you will be finding yourself clicking in and out of menu options trying to get from one place to the other. GT2 did add some improvements from the original, such as the rally courses, new tracks in exotic locations such as Tahiti and Rome, and over 500 cars. Overall though, I believe the programmers of GT2 focused too much on what was bad with the original and took it a step further to make it worse. A step in the wrong direction. Although the realism is why Gran Tourismo was so popular, game developers should always maintain a balance of reality and fantasy.
BETTER THAN GT

I WROTE THIS TO COMMENT ON ANOTHERS' REVIEW. THERE ARE IN FACT PORSCHES IN THIS GAME. NOT ONLY ARE THEY PORSCHES BUT THEY ARE RUF PORSCHES, A MODIFICATION TO PORSCHES THAT ENHANCE PERFORMANCE. THIS GAME IS SUPERIOR TO ITS ANCESTOR GT. UNLIKE THE FIRST GT I THINK THEY HAVE CHANGED THE BRAKING SYSTEM IN THIS GAME, IT IS A LITTLE HARDER TO MASTER BUT THAT WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM DUE TO THE NUMBER OF HOURS LOGGED IN. A NOT SO NICE SURPRISE WOULD HAVE TO BE 6 LICSENSE TESTS. THEY ARE ACTUALLY NOT AS HARD THOUGH. THEY CAN GET YOU CARS AND TRACKS FOR ARCADE MODE. ANOTHER BONUS FEATURE WOULD BE THAT YOU CAN RACE YOUR OWN CARS IN ARCADE MODE AND YOU CAN LOAD A GUEST GARAGE INTO ARCADE MODE. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME FOR 2 WEEKS STRAIGHT AND I HAVE ONLY COMPLETED 11% OF THE GAME, THIS COULD TAKE A WHILE I THINK. THERE ARE A LOT MORE RACES IN THIS GAME AND THE ENDURACNCE CHALLENGE WILL TEST YOUR SKILLS. ALL IN ALL ANYONE CAR FAN WILL LOVE THIS GAME. CHECK OUT THE AUDI S4, IT HANDLES LIKE A DREAM.
The best driving game ever!

I got this game on December 31,99, it is the best game I ever played. It is more realistic then any game because it almost have all of famous cars like Mercedes Benz E-55,BMW 740i and more from Italian cars to Japanese cars. It have more racing course. Another things is that this game can play a rally games. There is two disc, one for simulation and the other for arcade.
GT2 is the best racing game ever existed!

Over 500 cars, over twenty different car models, huge tracks. In short words: the best racing experience since GT.
