If you were a fan of FF6 or FF7, you will absolutely LOVE this game. The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and the midevial theme to it really makes this game one of the best RPG's to date. This is my favorite FF game (next to FF6) simply because of the amazing storyline and gameplay. Get this game, I guarentee you won't regret it.

ff9 still has acceptable graphics, even though it is a ps1 game. the music, apart from the boss battle music, is terrific. the story isn't that complicated, but it is still great. the fmv sequences show what might be the best graphics on ps1. even the ones with no action are awsome and there are some amazing action fmv scenes. the gameplay is a little lacking. i liked the characters having there own special abilities and looking appropriate for their class, but compared to ff10, the random battles are very tedious. overall a very great game.

The Best of Modern Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy IX was definitely designed for the fans who've been with Final Fantasy since the beginning. And while the less realistic character designs and medieval setting may turn off those jumped on the band wagon when FF VII hit the market, these factors give the rest of us a warm, fuzzy feeling. FF IX brings back many things I remember from the FF's I played as a kid, yet implemented them into a story I can enjoy as a 20-year old (actually, I was 17 or 18 when I first played it, but I still enjoy it today). The review on the back of the box puts it quite well: "In every way, it takes the best of the old and mixes it with the best of the new." The result is the best Final Fantasy since VI.

There are many things you need to think about before you decide if this game is for you. Which FF was your favorite? The most common answers will be VI or VII. If VI was your favorite, IX may give it a run for it's money. If VII was your favorite, you may still like this game, but chances are you're going to walk away unsatisfied. And that's a shame, because this really is a game that's great beyond my ability to convey to you.

The previous two FF games were set in a more futuristic setting, whereas this one is set in the medieval days like the old FF games were. You still have air ships though. Go figure. It's a fantasy. Many complain that the story isn't as deep as VII or VIII, but that's not really true. FF IX has a story that's easy to understand, but it's also easy to miss the underlying meaning of it. FF IX is about life, and what it means to live. And what it means to die. The story will grab ahold of you if you can get past the cartoony characters, which frankly never bothered me, as I played all of the older titles.

The graphics are quite good by PS1 standards, and the battles are fast paced, and fun. You can also have four members in your party in this game, which is a feature I really missed in VII and VIII as a four character battle system really works much better than a three character battle system. The summons have been shortened, so you don't have to spend 15 minutes staring at one you've already seen every time you want to use one.

I also think that it's about time FF had a likable character at the lead. I could never relate to Squall or Cloud, as they seemed arrogant and stuck on themselves. Sure, they become more deep as the story progresses, but it was just hard to give a damn about them. Zidane, on the other hand, is a character everyone can root for (more like Locke from FF VI, but with a tail).

While I loved VIII's story, I found the gameplay dragged at times. Not so with IX. I think everyone can enjoy this game. No one should have too much difficulty beating it, even without a strategy guide. There are many interesting minigames and sidequests (the card game in this one is far better than the one in VIII, and much more entertaining than Blitzball) to keep you occupied for some time. And the Moogles are back! I better quit now. I could go on for days.

It's a well done game if you look into it

One thing though a lot of people miss is how the focus of the story was placed on themes about life. FFVII had themes about courage and sacrifice. FFVIII had themes about love and changing within. FFIX themes was most about finding worth in every life and cherishing great moments in life. Every Final Fantasy (if you take the time to notice) has some themes that you can draw on depending on how much you get into the game. Don't let the "kiddy" character designs blind you; it really is a touching game. Also I must mention (because I'm a book/library addict) that FFIX has the best dialogue of ANY Final Fantasy.

Although I initially thought that visually FFIX was a step back from it's predecessor, after a few minutes it was clear that this installment was just as playable as any of the othe FFs! The music really sets the scene and along with the trademark cut-scenes it is no time at all until anyone who has played a FF game before begins to relax and watch the story unfold.
Perhaps its isn't the BEST storyline of the series but by the end of the first CD (of four)you are quite eager to learn what happens next. The characters are all different and come with their own skills to contribute to their battles. Quena (the frog-like one), for instance, adds a few moments of humour to the story (and has a weird-but-cool attack called 'frog drop' which you can increase the damage of by making Quena eat frogs found in the world's ponds!?) while the cheerful Zidane (the main character) makes a nice change from the darker personalities of previous FF heroes like Squall or Cloud and his 'Steal' ability is much more useful than in past FFs!
Battles are more tactical in FFIX allowing front and backrow positionings for example: frontrow charcters can inflict more damage but need to be able to take it too while back row positions are better for magic and projectile-fighters who can attack from longer distances! The FFVIII junction system has been replaced by equiping. This is a lot more simple for beginners and you don't have to collect spells all the time as before.
Speaking of which, I would definately recomend this title to anyone with a playstation - new to FF or not. I found this the easiest game of the series and also one of the most enjoyable.
A good tip for beginners would be to raise your character's levels at every opportunity possible, otherwise there is very little that the player should find difficult. It takes time but its definately worth it!
Happy playing!

Good game all around.

I have to say that I enjoyed this game a lot more than FF8, even though the characters seemed a lot less attractive (especially the guys..*sob*). Also, because some of the graphics are less three-dimensional, people don't seem at blocky as in FF8...which contributes to smooth gameplay. And the GF attacks no longer take a million years to do.

Very well done

I feel this is the best final fantasy game. Althouth it is not a break throw like final fantasy 7 was. The big towns, new features, and cool charactors make the game. I mean who does not like a king that was turned in to a frog or a big fat chef whos best attack is to eat the ememy. And if you think the story is not that exciteing wait till you play final fantasy 10. That game is horrable. It sold so will because 9 is such a good game. You wait the new x2 is not going to sell as well as x.
