This game is the best yet. I own FF7 and FF8. I thought FF7 was going to be unbeatable. I was dead wrong. Once i got this game, I couldn't put it down. The best part are many things. You can use ATE to see what other people are doing. The graphics are incredible. A must have for all

Ok everyone this is the best Final Fantasy in the series...

This is the best game in the Final Fantasy series at least I think it is. With the beautiful detaild backrounds it touches your soul that it is so amazing. The Graphics are so deataild, its umbelievable! Every single level or world is diferent in a way. The fantasy in it is so good. To flying boats, flying cars and just such amazing buildings. The characters are real good. Each and everyone has it's on unique way of acting. Some of them have a real good voice like Dagger with her beloved singing. The characters are so well desighned. Each one has a different look to them also. Some of them look real strange and fantasy like (which they should be so that is good) Then some of them look normal but with other things added on to them that make them different. For example Zidane looks like a normal person but he has a tail like a monkey. The gameplay is about the same as the last ones. I think it is better though. It adds more features to it also, more magic. The soundtrack is real nice. The music matches everything, when they are in a battle, roaming around, or just talking. Its unbelievable that square could add this much stuff. The actual sound is also good. To the point of footsteps, to magic spells, this sound is great! So saddle up and get ready to play the game of your life. It might take you a while but its worth it! This is a must buy if you like RPG's. So save and buy buy buy, because you will be amazed!

Another Fantasy...but no innovation

"The Crystal comes back!" The catch phrase of FFIX, and possibly the most inaccurate statement ever in the history of videogaming. I saw this phrase and thought of the days of the very first Final Fantasy, with a completely customizable party, a solid, inventive storyline & combat system, and everything else generally associated with the first of this series.

Although FFIX boasts the best polygonal characters of the series, as well as the best FMV, square has long since forgotten that video games are about gaming, not graphics. Gamers can only be dazzled for so long before gameplay becomes a huge issue. While I appreciate the characters, storyline, and stability of this game far more than I did those of FFVII & VIII, IX lost a lot in the following ways:

1) What happened to the serious plotlines? Given not only the recent trend towards serious gaming but also the release of the movie (sci-fi based, like FFVII & VIII, not fantasy like IX), square should have continued their trend of seriousness. A glance at FFX on PS2 shows that square intends on continuing the serious trends later. Why the one reprieve? 2) The battle system is boring. Hardcore gamers and FF fans will yell at me for this, but lets face it: the battle system is the repeated mashing of a single button, with very little thought involved. 3) The minigames, while much better than before, yield dubious and/or difficult results. There are two extremes to the minigame situation: tetra master & chocobo's hot & cold. tetra master (which everyone will recognize immediately as Triple Triad of FFVIII) is a collectible card game, complete with 100 different cards, collector ranks, and cards that can gain experience and have individual statistics. The problem, of course, is twofold. The first is that the highest collector level is ridiculously hard to attain. The second is that there's no reward for attaining it. Unlike Triple Triad of FFVIII, you get no items for having the best cards: you get...respect? On the other end of the spectrum, chocobo's hot & cold is far too challenging and nitpicky for the prizes it rewards (namely, the best/second best weapons in the game for several characters).

Ok, that's the end of the rant. The game is still fun. The ending was the best FF ending I've seen in years. So I'll stop whining.

This installation in the Final Fantasy Series uses the old job system (white mage, dark mage etc. from the earlier FF games.) The storyline is pretty linear (you cant hop around here and there to change the timeline) except for the funny little side quests. All of the images and artwork are rounded and more "kid friendly" than the more sophisticated Amano graphics and some of the character's appearances are rather original, but they make this installment Unique. The opening sequence is really nice. The only drawback is you can't skip it when you want to start a new game. No matter how many times you've seen it you have to watch it all over again. Also, I find that the graphics in the towns are sometimes confusing and it can be difficult to find exits and special items.

The battle system is simplified and straightforward compared to FF8 and I was dissapointed that only a few of the "Gaurdian Force" were carried over to this game and their animations are very different. There is no junctioning but you still have to wait quite a while to find the items and have the magic to call most of them. The battles (even boss battles) are fairly easy as long as you use the correct element such as water vs. thunder. However, you don't always get to choose who is in your party and you must compensate if their abilites are much weaker than the rest of the characters with special abilites. Sometimes you have to time things just right to learn an ability or keep fighting monsters until weaker characters are ready to move on with the rest of the party. Overall it is a fairly good game and brings back some features from the orignal Final Fantasy series. I would also reccomend Final Fantasy Origins or any of the original cartridge games before these new titles for a more complete Final Fantasy experience.

I started playing this game because I was having problems with my copy of VIII. After hearing how bad it was from everyone I knew who played it, I was surprised to find that I was enjoying it. It's fun to play a less emotionally complicated, lighter game. The graphics are so much better than VIII it's not even funny. Gameplay is definitely Final Fantasy, but uncluttered by complications. I'm going to wait to get a different copy of VIII until I can complete this one. And if I happen to complete this one when X-2 comes out, then VIII will wait longer.

Awesome Game, Not Quite As Good As VII, But Right There At It

This game may be one of the greatest games I have ever played. The music is absolutley gorgeous, gripping and emotional (courtesy of the remarkable Nobuo Uematsu). The game itself is ridiculously fun. Now on too the review.

Graphics-9/10-OK, this was released 5 years ago, I bought it then, played it and beat it. Loved the graphics, but I can't help but feel that they are slightly dated now. Still, they are amaizing, especialy the cutscenes, which rivals that of FFX on the PS2.

Gameplay-10/10-Amazing. Just like that of other FF games, it is amazing. The inclusion of 4 party memebers (like that of FF1) was great to me, being a fan since the days of old, it was very nastalgic

Story/Setting-10/10-The story of this game is great. I won't spoil that much of it but this is how it goes in a nutshell; A group of actors/thieves are sent to Alexandria to kidnapp the princess during the play and bring her to the opposite kingdom, Lindblum to keep her safe (this is revealed when you get to Lindblum, it was originally thought they just wanted to kidnapp her) because her mother, the diabolical Queen Brahne has been acting very crazy and evil lately. Queen Brahne eventually launches attacks on the different kingdoms with magical weapons supplied by a sorcerer named Kuja. The group eventually decide to destroy Kuja. The story is very very deep, keep in mind this is just an overview wiht a few spoilers. The setting is great also, since it harkens back to the days of FF1 and FF2, when the FF games were set in old kingdoms.

Overall-10/10-If you enjoy FF games, especially the older ones get this, you will not regret it.

Still one watt short of a light bulb if youre a veteran!

OK, this game was one of the best games I had, but its not really good to me anymore. I think that this game was basically made to get people into Final Fantasy that never played before. Its really easy for the veterans like me, the battle system is too easy to know, and not really a good one compared ot others (thank god it beats FF8's).

Producer should think a little bit more in everybody's taste

FF9 is quite and impressive game, but producers are playing an "extremist" game here... if FFVIII was "too much for adults" I personally can say this FFIX is too much for kids. The story is not deep as other FF storyes, most of the characters can't just be at the level of the situation (When Zidane knows the meaning of his dark existence, he just think about it 2 minutes and then he acts like nothing has happen, and then that whole situation is forgotten...). When I play FF9, I think producers rush too much the game, and it really picks up in the middle of the third disk (too late to be remembered as a great game... or at least for me).

Great game: Too bad other businesses don't like shipping to Alaska. I tried for 6 weeks and four companies before Amazon sent me the game. It's GREAT :o)
