the overall gameplay was excellent, especially for a psone game. The graphics and cut-scenes were really good.

This is the greatest Playstation RPG yet. Square has definately made up for their dissappointing VIII. Very nice storyline, deep and interwoven. Equip system has been brought back, cool new card game harder to master than VIII's Triple Triad. You don't always have to have the hero in your party, if you'd wish to just fight around with any four random characters (once you get past a certain point). The ending is magnifacent, and even the credits are awesome.
AWESOME game

Ive had this game for a long time, and have at least a hundred hours playing it in that time. a disk got destroyed, and I immediately re-ordered it. If you even have the slightest interest in RPG games or the final fantasy series, or any other game like it for that matter, you should really consider purchasing this game. Even though it is several years old and for the original playstation, it is an amazing game with a very captivating storyline. Id recommend this game to ANYONE who asks.

I'm in love with this game. It's by far the greatest final fantasy of the bunch. Great story, funny characters, and no confusing battle systems. Also, you can teach your characters all their abilities much easier and faster with leveling than with any other game. This does not make the game any less challenging or fun. There are tons of side quests and quirks that will make you get lost in the game for hours. The Chocobo side quest will have you squeeing with joy! Seriously, don't miss out on this game. Every time you play it is a new experience and you find more and more to do.
Fun game, with little true substance; tries too hard to be cute

This game is like the popular guy in school. It has lots of die-hard fans, because the designers made the game in a deliberate attempt to attract them. "Everyone liked the oprea scene in FF6? Then let's put a play in this one. And a card game, like in FF8. And some characters that were manufactured. And a princess, and a dragoon. And let's make everything cute. In the design of this game, eclecticism is a method rather than an influence, as in the grade-school exercise of writing a story and putting all of one's best friends in it, yet the presentation of this game still somehow manages to be more mature than that of FFX, although the plot is less compelling.
The soundtrack for this game is superb, featuring a great amount of quality music, underscoring everything from the game's characters to its environments to its events. The ability to split up while exploring towns, and watch cut scenes chronicling the adventures of the estranged characters, is cool, and the characters are cool as well, but unlike in FF6, another FF game with cool characters, there is no dramatic impetus driving the story forward. As a player watching the cutscenes, it is hard to root for particular outcomes of events, because everything happens arbitrarily, and whenever it seems that the party has finally inherited a mission, the next plot point changes the whole situation and makes the mission obsolete, rather than simply throwing an obstacle between the player and the completion of the mission.
This game has the least systematic innovation of the entire FF series, and the elements of the series' battle system reprised in this game were never the series' best in the first place. Battles are fought FFIV-style, with only one or two feasable choices for how to spend each character's turn, there's a lack of variety of monsters within each environment, and a lack of opportunities for the player to challenge himself by entering a dangerous environment before the plot demands it. The battle screen loads slowly, and the battles themselves seem to run less smoothly than in any other ATB-based FF game, with frequent incidences of irrational lag between character turns, and between the selection and execution of an action. Sometimes an ATB bar can fill from empty to full during this lag time, making the order of turns just as confusing as if there were no ATB bar at all. The prerendered backgrounds in FFIX are, individually, even more gorgeous than those of FFVII or FFVIII, but FFIX is significantly less atmospheric than either of those games, with many sections of the map seeming to have been pasted together randomly.
One of the best in the series

I'm in my mid 20's and a little behind in the times when it comes to the later generation video game consoles. I played FF1 for the original NES and 4 and 6 for SNES when they first came out, but then never really tried any of the playstation final fantasies because I never had a playstation. I finally got a PS2 last year, so I decided to give this one a try a few months ago. This one seemed the most appealing to me because the themes and settings seemed a lot similar to those in the original games, as opposed to 7 and 8 which seem to have a more sci-fi feel to them than fantasy. Nothing wrong with sci-fi, but hey, it IS Final FANTASY. Anyhow, I have played a lot of RPG's over the years, and with the exception of Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger, I have never played a better role playing game than this. The characters are fun, the story is great, the music is beautiful, and the villain has lots of personality and charisma, which always makes for a better conflict story-wise.
The battle system is pretty standard fair for a Final Fantasy - time gauge, each character has their own unique techniques, familiar magic spells and summons, etc.
Maybe the best thing about this game is the way it seemlessly blends the old with the new. Old time fans who have been playing the series since the beginning will enjoy all of the references to past games, whether they be subtle or blatant. A lot of times you will be watching the story unfold and find yourself saying "hey, that's just like this or that from final fantasy #!!". But because it's a playstation game, it looks absolutely beautiful and allows you to experience some new innovations as well.
The only negative I can really think of is that in order to find a few of the best weapons and items in the game, you have to engage in an extracurricular chocobo hunting game than is often more tedious than it is fun. I think it was a novel idea, but you just have to spend too much time on it in order to find everything it has to offer. I personally don't really like using walkthroughs when playing these games because I like to find stuff on my own, but without an extensive walkthrough, most players will probably have a lot of difficulty finding certain things like the Ragnarok sword and other items that can only be obtained by spending hours playing the chocobo hot & cold game.
All in all, this is a great game, the second best Final Fantasy behind 6 in my opinion, and for $15 or however much it is, you really can't go wrong.

OK! People are saying this game is bad, but it really is fun! I love the chocobo hot and cold! That game is so addicting cuz u can find treasure and lvl up ur chocobo! The story line sorta sucked but the ability system is fairly easy to comprehend, unlike ff8 (which wasn't that good by the way, it was ok). This is a very good game if u like the ff series over all! I would definitly recommend it!
One of the best games ever...

I first played this game about a month ago,and I think that Final Fantasy IX is one of the best games ever. The game starts with a great 3D cutscene, and the music in this game is so good,it is some of the best music you will ever hear in a video game. This game is even better then 'The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina Of Time',and that game is very fun.Half the fun of Final Fantasy IX is the story. The only problem with this game is that some of the names of the heros are very weird and hard to pronounce, also this is the game that started the 'check out her!' in Final Fantasy games, but yeah Garnet is hot(veeery hot).So over all if you ever played any 'Final Fantasy'games, you will love this one.
Return to the ideographic style.

Let's begin by saying, I've played this game beyond all reason. I know the plot, I know almost all of the sidequests, and my goal is to deliver every Mognet letter, and beat Ozma, along with the jump rope mini-game. So, yes, I'm addicted to it. This is my favorite Final fantasy of all those which have been on the PSX.
First off, the characters are top-notch. They all seem very alive, and you can feel their emotions, even though everything is text. The cast is well developed through out the game, and by the the end, you'll be loving some, while hating others. My only complaint is with Vivi. Sure, he's cool and cute, but he really became gratoing for me. With his unceasing,"Am I human? Are we real?" dialogues, he became something of a pest by the third disc. Of course, I've played multiple times, so maybe it won't bother you as much. Besides, even with that, he's too powerful to exclude him from your party for the final battle. Plus, removing him does take out a good bit of humor from certain sections of the game.
I really think they nailed the ability system in this installment. It was an immense improvement over those of VII and VIII, and even seems somewhat logical. You get better equipment, and learn better abilities while fighting with that equipment on. Some abilities must be equipped (most of them), and these are limited by the number of stones you have (I think the stones are supposed to be magical). This way you can't learn all your abilities and equip every single one of them. You gain more stones each time you level up. The other abilities, the majority of which are magic, are automatically available to you, and won't use any stones.
I must say that the story is the best of those I've played so far. It goes in many different directions at once, yet everything is tied together by the end. You are also going to have some plot twists that you won't have even thought of. I do hear that the main villain, Kuja, was actually changed from a woman to a man for the US version. Kind of annoying if it's true.
Once more, there is an entirely new world to explore, and it's huge, of course. For most players, the best way to travel will wind up being the airship. For those who will invest some time, the Golden Chocobo is far better. The world is huge, but maybe the oceans are a bit too large. It was pretty boring for some parts of the game, going back and forth, and the ocean would take minutes to cross.
The music is a great part of what makes this game so wonderful. It was wonderfully done, and is enjoyable even when you aren't playing the game (I've got the OST, and The Piano Collections), and when the game is done, you can recall scenes and feelings just by hearing the music. This game has one of the saddest (emotionally, 'cause it's great musically) guitar pieces I've ever heard. Just wait until you here it. You'll know what I'm talking about.
So, now you can see what makes this game so great. I really recommend that you give it a try. The hardest part for some is getting past the graphics, which aren't the best in some locations, particularly the world map. But, anyway, buy the game. Don't let it be like Xenogears, where everyone's bought a copy, and no thy're rare, and $40 for a used one. I doubt that'll happen to a Final Fantasy game, but you'd better, just in case.
