All Story Bad Gameplay

This game was not what i had in mind for the next Square Masterpiece. In FFVII, the gameplay was the focused on the most, In VIII, the story seemed to slowly take over the game, leaving the battles a lot to be desired, and finally in IX, the story had completely taken over. The battles were very, very easy and simplistic to me. Especially now that you had 4 characters instead of the usual Playstation 3, it was a lot easier. The game is very linear, at the beginning of the game, your only choices were about 2 or 3 places to go to. But that changes in the 20th or so hour in the game..... on the fourth disc. You don't even choose which characters you want to use as your main party into late in the 3rd disc! The game doesnt even have many side quests unlike VIII and VII! This game is way, WAY too linear. You always know where you need to go to which takes the sense of quest and adventure away completely. So, why did I give it 3 stars you may ask? Because I love the idea that they went back to the job system originally in Final Fantasy V (Final Fantasy Anthology for the playstation). And while linear because of the story, the story is actually quite good. And it does have SOME funny humor in it, but if your over 12, you won't laugh much. This game is a great buy for people new to RPGs.

i love the return to superdeformed characters!

fans of FFVII and FFVIII might not like this version - it's a return to the cutesy super deformed FF games, and definately lacking in the 'breath-taking realism' of the two that came before it.

but if you're a fan of amusing games, adventure and SD animation, this is definately a great game for you. personally, i love it.

Final Fantasy IX

I have to admit, every single Final Fantasy is awesome! But the least favorite of mine is Final Fantasy IX... I admit, the graphics are completely awsome, it would blow any other Final Fantasy away, but the story board is [over rated]I've never seen so many love sequences between Zidane Tribal and Princess Garnet Til Alexandrios (a.k.a. Dagger). I liked final fantasy IX, it is a good game to get, but it isn't the best Final Fantasy there is...

I give Final Fantasy IX three stars...

Weakest of the modern FF series

Now before you look at this and mark it unhelpful because I didn't give 5 stars, just listen to my reasons first. I love Final Fantasy, and I love FF9, however for me it is the weakest of all the recent FF's (7,8,9 and 10, not including X-2 which isn't really in the series as such).

My main gripe with the game is that it was far too easy, on my first time completing it, I only died once, and that was because I ran into the secret boss Hades by mistake. I also did not have to go out of the way to build the character levels up like in previous games. I know some find this annoying, but for me, it is an important part of the challenge of a good RPG, and by not having to build the characters up, it is only catering to the casual gamer.

Despite this it is still a great game, i've never played a bad FF game, the locations are great, the plot is good, though the characters aren't especially engaging. As usual there is plenty to do outside of the regular game, though again not as much as previous FF's and the card game is c**p compared to Triple Triad on FF8. I would honestly recommend this game to anyone, despite what i've said it is a great game, it just felt like a disappointment on the back of FF7 & 8 (I honestly don't know why people rate this higher than 8, I cant see it myself at all).

Please note as well, avoid the official strategy guide for this game, it is awful, see my review for more info.

awesome!

Worst Final Fantasy Ever

If you've played hours and hours on the other four(five if you count FFIV) Final Fantasy Games, you should probably hate this one with a passion. Not only do they have characters that lack in imagination or creativity, but also in the depth that other Final Fantasies have brought to the table. The monkey man is indomitable, and the wizard role which was made out to be the best thing since the spork was invented was clearly overrated. Personally the confidence and depth of characterism that were displayed in FF7 and FF9 were excellent and made for a game that I will continue to play over and over until I'm old and grey. FF9 was one that will leave with only one feeling for the future: what is FF10 going to be like?

Truly one of the best games out there

Final Fantasy 9 stands right up there with all my favorite RPGs----Final Fantasy 7, Breath of Fire 3, Chrono Cross, Legend of Legaia, and Tales of Destiny. The characters are wonderful, and the storyline is a lot better than the confusing one in its predecessor, Final Fantasy 8. The towns are great, from big kingdoms to Lindblum and Alexandria to small farm towns like Dali Village or secret towns like Daguerrero. The bosses are quite difficult, depending on some, like Gizamaluke (if you're Level 15 or higher he's a breeze, but not for me he wasn't, and I was Level 14), Ark, Ozma, and Trance Kuja. The summons, now called Eidolons return as in every game with some new ones such as Madeen. Favorites return like Shiva, Ramuh, and Ifrit. But ones from FF8, such as Diablos, do not make their triumphant return, but Hades from FF7 makes his return as, not a summon, but an optional boss. Boy is he tough. This game also houses the airships that make every Final Fantasy game great, and the Chocobos and Mogs return as well. Even references to other FF games are loaded in this game.

This game rocks.

Best yet!

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I think it's so much better than the last one, with which I got discouraged. Though not as good as Majora's Mask, it's kept me busy and entertained for hours.

A return to greatness

Final Fantasy IX is here, and all that is old is new again. Square's developers have once again outdone themselves as far as technical execution and visual artistry, building a fantasy world that I could be content to simply stare at, remembering years past when all these things struck an internal chord for the first time and wondering how a game console could hold images this beautiful.

What's a little unnerving about FFIX is that, after several Final Fantasies in succession, you can start picking out the Tinkertoys. What I mean is, you can see the plot and character elements being recycled from previous games. This is obviously something I can't talk about in detail, but there are elements obviously drawn from VI, VII, and VIII all through the plot of IX, and if it hadn't been eight years since I played IV, I could probably pick out a few common threads there as well. No, wait, I take that back, nailed at least one lift from IV. It's not on the scale of something like the anime references in Xenogears, where you could fill a book-length concordance with all the familiar moments, but it's enough to make me wonder whether Square couldn't be better served siphoning off a little of the CG budget and beefing up the scenario design staff.

FFIX is uncomfortably familiar in terms of narrative structure as well as narrative content. Like the previous PlayStation FFs, and to a lesser extent the series in general, events progress in a particular way - up until the wide-open rose-smelling sections on the third disc, you move predictably from chapter to chapter of the tale and don't deviate particularly far from your path. Lengthy sections of the game up through that point are thoroughly noninteractive, too, as you tap the X button through scenes of dialogue or wander about towns looking for the particular characters and items that will push the plot forward. On a larger scale, you battle your way through part of the plot, get the ship, sail to the other continent, explore more of the plot, get the airship, encounter the pre-climactic bits, get the run of the world to build up your levels and equipment in preparation for the final battle, and then proceed to the endgame. The previous sentence could describe VII, VIII, or IX with equal precision.

Final Fantasy could go on forever re-creating its particular spin on the traditional heroic quest, and it would be a success every single time, but I can't help feeling as if something that features this kind of majestic visual craftsmanship ought to host a story built with equal care. I recognize the value which these conventions hold for both Square and the series' legions of fans, but in the words of a great philosopher, overspecialization leads to death. There's going to be a point one of these days where the formula won't necessarily work anymore. There will come a day that beauty will finally prove to go only skin deep. This is the last Final Fantasy on the PlayStation, and a brave new world of next-generation consoles awaits, in which the destination of Square's flagship series remains uncertain. What is Final Fantasy X going to be - a leap ahead like Final Fantasy VII was, or more of what we've seen on the PlayStation? What on earth will Final Fantasy XI be - if it follows its current trend, it may very well be the most amazing game that no power in the world will be able to make me play.

Eh, probably just me getting old again. The fact of the matter is that there has never been a Final Fantasy that delivered less than your money's worth of adventure - not now, and probably not ever - and I can't see any Final Fantasy fan experiencing any disappointment at the end of their experience with Final Fantasy IXconclusion may not be the most original you could conceiv.

traditional console RPGs, Final Fantasy X's drastic design shifts and Final Fantasy XI's online focus are the writing on the wall. Final Fantasy IX serves as a coda to the series as we know it - an immaculate summation of everything gamers love about the past ten years of Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy IX isn't trying to change the world or revolutionize the gaming industry. It's just trying to win your heart.

square's going downhill.

i loved final fantasies vii and viii, but ix really let me down. it's not nearly so deep as its predecessors; the characters don't develop and some of them don't even have a history! the side quests are disappointing and the system is also not quite up to par. if squaresoft had spent more time on this game and less on their beloved movie, it might have gained a star or two, in my opinion.
