I bought StarCraft about three years ago and it's still my favorite multiplayer strategy game! This is the best strategy game I think that is available now. You can chose from 3 different unique races and this game has an amazing storyline. For double the ammount of fun you can play on Battle.Net (free multiplayer service). Battle.net is what keeps this game going because you can play any game you like including paintball to deathmatches. This game is so amazing it even comes with a campaign editor so you can create your own games and play it with other people! I just wanted to say that I gave this game 5 stars because of it's amazing graphics, unique strategy, free multiplayer service, and a campaign editor. StarCraft is still my favortie game even after 3 years! I say buy this game!

Something that I have noticed a lot in the other reviews posted here is that they compare Starcraft's graphics/gameplay/features to RTS games that are being or have been released in 2000 and 2001. People! This game was released in 1997! Of course it can't have the same graphics as some more recent RTS games. That said, I am not saying that Starcraft is worse than any new RTS game just because it is older, I am saying that the people who give the game negative reviews are basing their problems with the game on things that are age-related. Graphics aside, the gameplay in starcraft is extremely fun, I have been playing for the five years that it has been out, and it is still fun.

One RTS game that I got recently is Empire Earth, and although it is interesting and offers a lot of features, the gameplay is clunky. And despite all the units in it, the game is huge and takes ages to complete, after a while, I am just fed up and resort to building a wonder in order to win. But starcraft doesnt't have that, it is always fun, especially when you play multiplayer with your friends. The graphics were amazing when the game was released in 1997, and they still are not bad.

As for those of you who claim that there is no strategy involved in Starcraft... although it is possible to rush your enemies and use sheer strength of numbers to win, I have found that most massed up armies can easily be taken down by a well coordinated defense. For example, I was playing against one of my korean friends who ten times better at Starcraft then I'll ever be, and he decided to rush and kill my allies with a huge group of zerg hydralisks (for those of you who don't know what a hydralysk is, just ask someone who has played the game before). As is customary in RTS games, I noticed that my allies' bases had been reduced to rubble, so I made a defensive line consiting of four photon cannons, and four reavers (photon cannons are a Protoss defensive building, and Reavers are large machines that look like metal slugs that shoot out insanely large explsives). The Hydralysks were torn to pieces by the much smaller force.

The point to that long winded account mass rushes can be countered by strategy. One review mentioned that fighters are useless and that if you used them to attack a base they would be sitting ducks... uhm... people, that's why they're called fighters... this reviewer had also stated just before that Starcraft does not involve any strategy, I think that the fact that you can't kill a base with just fighters is proof that at least some strategy is needed.

I'm sorry for going on and on like this, but when people compare Starcraft to gave like Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2, then they have serious mental problems. This is a fun, strategic and very well balanced game. I would recomment anyone who is interested in real time strategy games to purchase this. Take a hint from the fact that it is four years old and it is still selling as if it were new.

The game all strategy games will be based apon.

Starcraft is and will always be the defining Strategy game. Its easy access interface and the quick pick up on controls alows this game to be great. The best part about this game is its multiplayer capabilities. Blizzard has given Starcraft players the ability to make their own games. Everything from tag to chase to movie contests are held on their FREE servers. I don't like to give 5 stars that easily but this game is the definition of fun.

An Addictive RTS Game

I enjoyed playing StarCraft, and could potentially do so for quite a long time. It's fun and addictive. However, in recommending this game to anyone else, I have to include a few caveats. Though it's got a lot going for it, there are still a few negatives which some gamers might feel they wish they'd known before buying. I'm sure there's not that many people out there who would like this game and don't have it by now, but it's held up to the technology boom over the last few years. So there may still be people out there saying, "What's all this I hear about this StarCraft thing?" Well, here's what you should know.

A player can choose one of three races to command, Terrans and two alien races. The Terrans are ordinary humans using futuristic military weapons. The Zurg are a hive of "Alien"-like creatures whose weapons are all organic and grown with specialized purposes. The Protoss are highly developed aliens with Warp technology and force fields. All three races are very well-balanced, and if the player runs through the storyline included in the game, he will get a chance to play each one in turn. Though the player doesn't have to, it is recommended that he play the races in order. Doing so allows the player to get the full storyline as it is meant to be told. A player can run through the story, or play multiplayer scenarios over the internet. A player can also play the multiplayer scenarios alone by setting the opponents to computer players.

The game is divided into individual scenarios, or battles, which are handled completely idependently from each other. These scenes are introduced in a pre-scene "communications panel" view, which sets up the story background and describes the mission objectives. The missions themselves are generally divided into those where you have to build and defend a base, those where you have to take the offensive and defeat the enemy in his base, and those where you have to run through a corridor.

There are many good things I can say about the game. The first is that I thought it was a lot of fun to play. You get as many tries as you need to complete a scenario, and you can save at any point in the battle, so if you like your progress up to a certain point, you can save it there and any mistakes you make thereafter can be removed with a simple "Load Game" command. The scenarios generally build in difficulty, so as you get more practice in the game, the battles become more challenging to meet your growing skill. These things make it an enjoyable real-time strategy game.

A few things keep me from saying this is a perfect game. One thing I found annoying is that there is no carryover from one scenario to the next. No matter how well you do in one battle, any benefit you gained over and above the mission objective is lost. Part of the basis of the game is harvesting minerals. If you harvest far more than you need in one scenario, they are gone when you reach the next scenario. There is a score awarded at the end of each scenario to show how well you did in comparison to the enemies you hopefully defeated. However, the score doesn't accumulate over the course of the game - it is just a score for that scenario, which the game doesn't even save for posterity. You get your score and then it's gone. If you didn't write it down, it's gone. Similarly, the scenarios have the player develop "new" technologies to build bigger and better weapons and fighting units. After a scenario ends, the player has somehow forgotten those technologies and they must be "researched" again in the next scenario. It helps with game play, of course, but it doesn't make a lot of sense the way they phrase it.

Another thing that I was a little disappointed in was the fact that the storyline is set in stone, completely immutable by the player. Either a player completes a scenario and can go on to the next chapter in the story, or the player must repeat that scenario, but the story will not go on if the player does not pass each stage. Therefore, nothing the player does will affect the story. Even if they fail at a scenario they can just try it again.

It would have been nice to see more variety in the types of missions. It seemed to me that most of the scenarios could be won by taking your time and building a big force, and attacking your enemy with a massive amount of troops after he'd run out of resources. In that way, it was a bit of an arms race at times, and it would have been good to see more cerebral ways to combat your enemy using more complex strategy.

Still with all that, it was a good game. It makes a nice contrast to a lot of the turn-based strategy games or first-person shooters. And if you enjoy this, don't hesitate to get the Brood War expansion. But I recommend trying the basic game out first, unless you get the BattleChest (which has both).

Very fun indeed!

Just so you know, I am only going to discuss single-player version because I never tried multi-player.

You have Warcraft, you have Diablo, and then you have Starcraft. Diablo and Warcraft have gone off to have #2 (and in Warcraft's case, #3) but Starcraft has nothing but a Brood War expansion. I can't see why.

Starcraft is fantastic. You have three different races that are unique in their own way. Different buildings, different units, different ways of evolving... heck, just about everything is different between each race. I think that is pretty cool.

I, personally, like the custom scenarios. I also like a really cool scenario that is kind of like a arcade game where you try to protect your nexus (protoss main building) from oncoming enemies. and get 'galactic heroes' if you survive.

I found the actual campaign a bit too difficult for me, with some missions seeming just plain impossible. It also takes a while to master each race (I like the protoss, but the Zerg are, in my opinion, the easiest to fight with) But it is still fun and I really like some of the heroes, especially the Protoss heroes.

Finally, I like making my own scenarios. It seemed difficult and a little confusing at first, but I eventually got the hang of it.

Go out and buy this game!

Great Strategy

I have a lot of strategy games old and new. By a good margin, this beats the pack. I even think it's better than the newer strategy game, Age of Mythology. This game is amazing! This has good single player, but the campains may be frustrating at times. The Battle.net on this game is a great bonus, and it's the best part of the game.
pros:
1.Great Multiplayer
2.awesome strategy
3. dirt cheap.
I know there's more, but I can't think of them right now.

I did find one con, even though if you want to play battle.net, you have to pick a certain side, and master it.
Con: Not that many sides, only zerg, protoss, and terran.

The sides on this game are very well balanced, though protoss may seem unfair at first, but if you are good, it's very possible to beat protoss with anyone, and the same goes for every other side.
Also, if you like this game, buy the expansion right away, because the expansion makes it even better than it already is.
That is what I think of this game.

One game... billions of dimensions

Starcraft was released years before I am writing this review but is still one of the most fun games I've ever played. Actually this is one out of two of the only games I've ever rated as a 5-star game on Amazon.com. If you're reading this you're obviously looking into buying this game and finding out what it's about and such. Starcraft has so many dimensions that after years of playin im still addicted to the game.

Basically starcraft is a game that uses the same type of formula found in a Warcraft or Age of Empires type of game - you build a colony of units and buildings and attack your opponent. Starcraft lets you chooese from 3 races - Terran the human like race, Zerg the larva infested race or protos the highly evolved computer generated race. All of these races have units - all with there pros and cons. For example a Zerg Gaurdian can take out a whole terran defense of missle turrets but it cant attack air units.

SC's first mode is single player where choose your colony and you go through a campaign for each race learning more about the wars of the races and having fun while doing it. Also in single player mode you can play a custom match to practice your skills against the computer. Overall the gameplay is great but there seems to be one flaw. A term called rushing where the opposing team can take out in early colony in a matter of minutes. They can easily "rush" into your base (mainly protoss zealots and terran marines) and attack you qucik enough to kill you and destroy all of your buildings while your still just getting started. The blizzard team tried to slow down "rushing" by making updates to the game and making it so that a user can only take 12 units at a time while retreating, attacking etc. but it hasn't worked out to well.

Another mode (which is where you have alot of fun) is multiplayer mode where you go online and play with other people from around the U.S, Asia, UK (or wherever you live.) Once you enter multiplayer mode you'll have to pick a name and password. Once you're done with that you'll be put into a chatroom which is a great part to the game. When you dont feel like playing or if you just want to make friends in the game this feature has it. You can edit your bdy lists here, send friends messages etc (basically the whole aim sceanrio.) Another thing you can do in chatrooms is see how much your lagging (which ill explain in a minute.) Lagging is when your computer is to slow to keep up with the connection and u make everybody suffer from your slow computer. Dont worry though, people who dont have slow computers can drop slow players disrupting a game and game creaters can boot slow people or lagging players or... anyone they want. In multiplayer mode can choose forom a variety of types of games. From a comp stomp where you can =d a bunch of other people take on 1 to 6 or 7 computers to 3v3 no clutter games, and even down to 4v4 nr20min (nr= no rush but some people still dont listen to the rules.) In a multiplayer game you can ally in an ffa (free for all) bs (backstab) and so on. This adds demension to the game making it harder to know who to trust and who to believe. Games with diffrent rules and games called ums are made by starcraft players in the Campaign editor mode. That's right you can make your own game on sc. All of them are fun for the most part but some ums games you may never be good at.

Campaign editor is the final mode in the game. I've never realy explored it too much because I never wanted to make a bad game and then people tell me its a bad game lol. In campaign editor you basically make your own ums game. Its fun to a certain degree but I personally never got into it.

All in all starcraft is a fine release by blizzard. A classic game of its time that even today has thousands and thousands of players on them game at a time. Hope you go and buy it cause it's really cheap now and it's good!!!
