Starcraft does a lot with the conventional rts genre.

You play three races. You play each of them in turn. Although you can play the three campaigns in any order, the game makes the most sense thusly: Terran/Zerg/Protoss.

There's a story linking the three together. The story varies in quality -- the Terran narrative being the best, the Zerg being pulpy nonsense, the Protoss recovering somewhat and ending up somewhere between the two.

Gameplay is very fine. I very much like the Blizzard interface --control was mostly a breeze (though a bit problematic with some of the Protoss units). Each race plays differently, with different strengths and weaknesses.

Problems? I'm docking this one star for the uneven writing, three bad missions (Terran nine, which is simply poorly designed; Protoss seven and eight, which are prefunctory, tedious variations on the "tank rush"), and the general unevenness in difficulty. Zerg are by far the easiest race to play, and as such it's odd to be doing them second, instead of first.

But all in all this will keep you amused for quite a while. The best missions are well designed and challenging, and the game can be quite addictive. Will be curious to see what Warcraft 3 looks like.

An Exceptional Sci-Fi Stradegy Game!

Like Blizzard, most if not all of their games are made into classics. Have you seen a non popular game made by blizzard? Lets see here; there is Diablo I & 2, Warcraft 1 & 2, and of course The Starcraft games.

I like this aspect of the game because of the controls and the fun factor of the game. I liked the diversity of the 3 races you can play and each advantages the unique races has.

I can see why 11 year olds kids can't into theese games, its too complicated minds. They like those simple mindless easy to play games. Starcraft does deal with stradegy, if you just make a million grunts and the opponent has ships and other advanced technology. The person with the best tactics win, don't get me wrong... Warcraft 2 was great also!

I'm a big science fiction fan, this game will keep ya playing for hours. If you're sick of all the darn tanks and military stuff like reality has. (Command and Conquer)

Starcraft is the way to go!

Wow. 'Nuff said. Hands-down one of the best games of all time. If you've ever played Warcraft, you won't be very surprised, as the game-play is very similar. As a stand-alone, the game is enjoyable for hours upon end... But add the Brood Wars expansion, and you'll be hooked for life.

Good game, but some major flaws

The first three months or so I played StarCraft, I loved it. It seemed that nothing was wrong with this surprisingly bug free game. However, the more you play it, the more you will realise its huge flaws.

Basically, it is an RTS, which means you start from scratch and build an empire. There are three races to choose from: the Terrans, whose strength is in special abilities like the nukes or Yamato guns but otherwise balanced between firepower and cost; the Zerg, whose advantage lies in its cheap units and their ability to build up a quick force; and the Protoss, whose units are far more advanced and expensive. The best race depends only on your playing style.

Things go wrong however, when you realise that whoever can build up a force of their best unit wins every game. It is not a world-class general that wins, it is number of units. Too bad for me I am a slow builder and lose every game I play.

Bottom line, the game's lightning fast pace may not be suitable for some gamers, in which case they should turn to the Age of Empires series.

Simply the best game I have ever played

Allright, when I played Warcraft 2, I though it was the best that Real-time-strategy gaming could get. Then I played Starcraft! This is probably the most addicting game ever. Fans of Warcraft 1 and 2 will love this game. Gameplay is basically the same, just in space. However, there are three races, cooler buildings, and really good multiplayer modes. Great sci-fi storyline, great graphics. The units look awesome! Add on the campaign and map editor, and you have an unlimited amount of gameplay. Then, go buy the brood war expansion set! I would talk about that too, but it would take up too much space. Bottom line: buy it!

Cool Game

Before I got this game I'd have to say I wasn't really a gamer. I still am not. But this game really showed me how cool computer games can be. What's happening is that a bunch of parasitic aliens called the zerg are trying to destroy a bunch of planets the terrans(pretty much humans) are using. The protoss are trying to help but their advances are taken threateningly and the terrens turn against them. You don't know you're allies in this frenzy of combat. You can be either of the three races in the campaign mode and then you can play custom games where it's just you and the computers fighting it out to the death. What's so great about this game is the map editor. With a little technology called triggers you can make an RPG( role-playing game) with the StarCraft interface. It's amazing. Try the multiplayer mode as well. There are so many cool maps that you can play with other opponents on line.

The Perfect Game

I have played the entire game more than 3 times, and never get bored. Combine it with Brood War, and you can refine your strategies almost endlessly. The story line is engaging, there are a lot of varied units, the soundtrack is great, and the combat is fantastic. I've spent way too much time for my own good playing this, but it is without a doubt the best computer game ever.

AHHHH!

I hate you Blizzard, I HATE YOU. Look at what you've done to me.....as if WarCraft II wasn't bad enough ruining a whole summer for me, NOW you have to ruin a whole year of college for me! Please, please stop making such good real-time strategy games, especially with awesome units like the bodaciously cool Siege Tank. I need to have a girlfriend, a life, a muscle-toned body, but it's becoming hard to find time for other things since I can't stop playing rounds of 'Craft on Battle.net.

For the love of God, STOP IT! NO MORE GOOD GAMES!

The best in real time strategy

While Blizzard Entertainment does not produce many titles, the games that they do produce are among the best in PC gaming.

Starcraft is the third series of Blizzard Entertainment games to be created, the others being Warcraft and Diablo. The game is a real time strategy game, where the player controls a number of military units in a series of battles to meet some objective, such as destroying the enemy or reaching a certain set of waypoints. Starcraft itself is set in a set of futuristic human colonies based on several extrasolar planets. The humans find themselves not only in a civil war but also in the middle of a war between the Zerg, a predatory, hive-like race that can assimilate other alien creatures, and the Protoss, a philosophical race with psychic powers ready to defend themselves and others.

Blizzard Entertainment has done a good job in creating some very good gameplay. A range of military units are available to the user, who can choose from among several strategies in completing his or her mission. While I have not tried the multiplayer option, I have played through the single player storyline, which allows the user to try playing each race and which varies the mission goals so that the user is always presented with frest challenges. The point and click interface is very intuitive and very easy to use, so any frustration in playing this game will be focused on the difficulty of the levels but not the difficulty in using the interface.

Beyond the gameplay, though, Blizzard has worked hard to make Starcraft exceptionally good at drawing players into the game. The storyline is well written and includes multiple plot twists that make players want to continue on through the next mission to find out what happens next in the storyline. The animated movies played between the missions are very well done. The artwork and music also create an excellent, chilling environment during gameplay. During the Terran (human) missions in particular, I found myself edgy about having hidden Zergs suddenly attack me.

In summary, Starcraft is the paradigm of what a real time strategy game should be. For those even vaguely interested in PC gaming who do not mind violence, I strongly recommend this game. I particuarly recommend it for those who have never played a real time strategy game but who want to try one and for those who particularly like real time strategy.

One of the best games ever

I have had this game ever since it came out in 1998, for the first few months, my entire family was addicted (my DAD, who never played games, was the best of the family ;-)) After that, I got new games, and it settled some dust on the shelves.
A few months ago I decided to put it back on the computer, and give it another try, and gues what, it was just as great as when I first got it, if not better, for now I had dsl so I could play it online!
I've read threw many of the 1 star reviews here, and a few comments:

-About no strategy: If you play online you live or die on strategy, sure, if you only join noob games there is little strategy, but play with some better players and you will see you have many things to learn.
-Bad graphics: It came out in 1998! And it is pretty good for 2d graphics, they have never bothered me in the least.
-Boring story: This is one of the most expancive, most detailed storylines in a game ever (and I'm a big RPG fan so I can know) With many emotional moments that will bring tears to your eyes at times, sometimes of happynes, sometimes of grief (OMG the last cinamitic made such a large lump in my throat)

Now for the good sides:

-Very diverse races, I had specialised in one race, and when I tried another one I had no clue how to build and was brutally slaughtered in a noob game (while with the other race I could almost play in expert games)
-Best singleplayer story ever, it is so detailed, so emotional, to understand everything you also must read the 6 page history PER RACE in the instruction book, it tells how they came into being, their history, and how they ended up where the game starts, it adds such depth to everything, you understand everything so much better then.
-GREAT custom maps, such as the battle of Helms Deep, my personel favorite (LOVE to be flamethrower Gimli ;-))
-Good tactics needed, whether you like it on small or large scale, if you want huge massive battles go for a round of Fastest, where in no time you can have huge armies battling eachother, in which you need to develope tactics for that kind of battles. Or, if you like small scale, very tactical play where the player with the best tactics wins, go for a round of Lost Temple, or Hunters, so for everyone, the kind of map that fits your playing style!
-HUGE online community, there are tens of thousands of people playing thousands of games almost all the time, with clans you can join and clan wars organised. There are always games you can join, of all sorts of game types, even in the early hours of the morning ;-)
-Best game for the very low price, don't know what it goes for now adays but I'm sure it's pretty cheap, so do yourself a favour and buy this game ;-)

As a closing note, don't waist any more time and get this game! ;-)
