There's one part of the game, the Sanitarium or something, and that level is the scariest thing I'v ever seen in any game!!!!! I mean so scary, this thing'll give you nightmares!!!!!!! This game is most definately NOT for children, at least under 12.
a lot better than Tomb Raider 3, but not much

I generally liked this Game a lot. it had a slightly improved control scheme, although it still used a walk button, which sucked! although it could still use tweaking, Lara looks better than ever, I never got to the male character but I'm sure he was fine. the game is buggy at times though, i had slow downs, the game actually froze up once (this i a console not Windows, freezing shouldn't happen!!) and twice when I fell from a great hieght I went THROUGH THE FLOOR. the game was a little easier to get through than other games in the series.
It's About Time!!!

I just bought this game recently and LOVE it! I rarely played the previous ones on PS1. Honestly I just could not handle the controls. HOWEVER, speaking of which, I know everyone is complaining about the new controls with the analog stick for this game. Yes it is a pain in the neck in the start. BUT trust me as you spend more time (say after level 2 or 3) you will get the hang of it. I just finished the whole game. It is so hard at times and you have to be really good but I cant explain to you how much fun it has been. Its just perfect. But again trust me with the analog stick controls. you will get it right just be patient. There was some other thing that bothered me a bit. At some levels the game becomes slow (slow motion). Now i dont know if that is a bug in the game or my copy is defected? BUt still its not a reason for not buying this lovely game. If you are a big fan of Lara or a new one like me then I recommend you buy it. CHEERS!!
70% of what I was hoping for on first PS2 version

Really 3-1/2 stars. So here we go...
The 70% Good:
Graphics are greatly improved and rival any game on PS2 platform. Lara looks great and let's be honest that's half the appeal.
The Story is good and the characters are as believeable as a video game gets.
And of course the signature TR puzzles and acrobatic challenges are great
The 30% Bad:
The Controls are cludgy and ill-conceived. The run function (full forward on the stick) sometimes starts you off running right away, sometimes stats you off walking (generally just irritating, but can kill you if you're trying to make a quick run jump with no time to spare). Using the R1 button for drawing the weapon (the one everyone else uses to aim) is irritating, but not fatal and interacting with ladders and such just by pushing up against them was a bad concept. Why not just use the action button?
Quality has issues. The jump function seems to randomly not work (which sucks at critical junctures) no matter how much you practice and Lara gets frozen or falls into nothingness for no reason (has happene to me at least once a game (5) in my attempts to get through in a single shot.
The quality issues are the ones that make trying to win the game without saving (the ultimate challenge) useless unless you don't mind starting from scratch for no reason other than they didn't spend enough on quality controls.
Overall worth getting for TR fans, but they need to step up if they want to get to RE PS2 level.
What a game!

OH MY GOD!!!! This is the best Tomb Raider game ever. The grahpics, storyline, and characters are way better. Aside from the controls, its the best. I give this game 5 out of 5 stars. If you were a Tomb Raider fan and got bored with her after the last 3 games, please, please check this game out. I guarentee that you will love this game. Whats so great is there are are a lot more FUN puzzles to solve. The reason why they're so hard is because when you're done you feel triumphant about solving a hard puzzle. Only true tomb Raider fans know what I mean. If you have never played this game before, please. It is so fun and challenging. Thats what makes it exciting. You have a lot more things to do. You don't have to kill every single thing. Theres more to this game than killing and stealing. I'm only 2 levels away from finishing it. No game is perfect and thats a fact, so just deal and look away from the bad things. Have fun! And get ready to be Crofted!!!! Kurtis is soooo cute!!

Some people dont like this game because of its different controls, but thats just people who arent good enough to handle them. The controls take about 5 minutes to get used to, then you find out that they are better then the controls on all of the other games. The only buttons that were switched around were Square, Triangle, and Circle, so quit your whining. It is for the better anyway. The weapons and the fighting are much better, because in the previous games it took about thirty shots to take down one guy. The only bad thing about the shooting is that you cant jump and shoot. (But seriously, how many people do you know that can shoot dead on while they are flipping upside down?) Other than that, the game is golden. When I saw previews for the game, i thought that it had lost the tomb raider touch, but i found out that it is like the other games, but better. In all of the previous games, if you jumped, you knew exactly where you were going to land. It was all set up in blocks. This game is even more free roaming, and with more, better puzzles. If you are the kind of person that needs to have the controls just the way you like them, then i suggest renting the game. But if you can handle the full Tomb Raider experience, then i suggest adding this great game to your collection.
A good game. A victim of circumstance.

So you just bought the first TR on PS2 what can you expect out of it? I will tell you. First off the graphics are definately improved by a lot. However as others have pointed out this is no breathtaking stuff. It is for modern standards graphically speaking, slightly above average. And yes the controls are shockingly hard to master. Maybe though it's because I have played all those other TR's and my brain has been programmed to play the way those others did. The game goes back to the old days of TR though with very little combat and a lot of just exploring and wandering through puzzle areas. Frankly I see that as an improvement. Also the combat and general tone of the game had gone back towards realism, Lara can no longer manage quite as shocking feats as she used to. She can no longer push blocky things 3 times her size(TR1) nor can she take a beating without blinking(TR2), nor can she hold her own weight up(such as the shimmy trick) for all eternity. Even her breast size seems to be more in proportion! But the greatest malady that befalls it is fans expectations. All those bad reviews are not as merited as they would appear. Even my review has so far focused on the bad, while in reality this game is actually quite good. Fans are comparing this game to their expectations and that's not a good thing! They are having knee jerk responses to it. What you really have to consider is that the whole TR thing is very very old. The Lara Croft Character that TR revolves around must evolve at this stage of it's life or it will stagnate and die in the popular imagination(and in sales). Eidos is doing a good thing by focusing on the Lara "personality" instead of the old paragim(did I spell that right?) of "game" Lara which is by it's very nature one dimensional and static. Maybe if allowed to continue the TR series will evolve into something quite interesting, but for that we will have to wait and see. In the meantime if you liked TR1 or TR:The Last Revelation then you should like this also, if you can resist that fan stigma thing. Give it a try.
New game, new places, same ol' Lara

Let me first say that I own just about all of the Tomb Raider games. Several years ago I got hooked on the PC version and really liked the "new at that time" type of game. However, I got tired and went on to play Thief and other games. After a few years, I recently purchased the new Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness for PS2 hoping to get back into the story. Well, after several days of straight playing I can say that I am back into Tomb Raider. This is primarily b/c of the new controls (no action button to climb, better walk or slow controls). With these this game is much easier to play. Additionally, in a lot of other games you have to know the right button combinations to do something. Here, however, you mostly just need to know jump and action which can be used to grip on to walls ... Besides the controls, new to this game is the ability to control the flow of the game by selecting what to ask/tell other characters in the game. Additionally, you get to see Lara get more experience and strength which adds difficulty to the game. The graphics are well done and the sound is impressive. As you can see from the additional behind the scenes portion of the dvd that the music in the game is actually from the London Orchestra which gives the game a movie quality.
CONS -- There are some problems though. If you have played Stuntman or games that require loading screens, you know how annoying they can be. Unfortunately, this game has them and sometimes it can take up to 10 or 15 seconds to load. The game is also VERY SLOW. It slows down if it is raining, if there is another active person in the room, if you are trying to run away from something, e.t.c... Finally, there are no new weapons or vehicles, it seems like you are just jumping and climbing. Oh well.
