Let me start by saying that I thought the controls were horrible as well. Until I got used to them. They are different. You no longer have a camera that simply hangs ten feet behind Lara. When you turn the analog stick, Lara moves in that direction and you need to manually adjust the camera behind her. Is that a bad thing? No. It is different from all previous Tomb Raider games but that is not to say that it is garbage. It worked fine in the N64 Zelda games and it works fine here.

I think the new and "dark" story is great. I'm sucked into it. NO OTHER Tomb Raider game has ever had a good story (save Last Revelation). The first and second TR games had as minimal story as possible.

Down to the shaky aspects.

While I think the new controls are good, there are times when they aren't too great. Aiming can be a chore especially when an enemy is at a higher or lower position than Lara's standpoint. There is a part when you are in a graveyard and are being chased by dogs. After climbing a certain mosoleum (sp?), I tried to aim at the approaching pooches. When they got to close to my standpoint I'd pull back and Lara moved on her own for a couple of seconds. No big problem.

The slowdown. People have been complaining about it. In the beginning of the game there is a part where Lara stands on a rainy rooftop. The game slows considerably. Yet this is the only time I've witnessed it so far. Luckily there isn't much you need to even do on said rooftop.

I give it five out of five. It's really a 4 out of 5 in my opinion. So why 5? To conversely skew those who drank to much Haterade with their Cheerios. Seems popular for gaming geeks (IGN) to give a negative review for Tomb Raider games that are not TR1 and TR2.

Bottom line: If you've been a Tomb Raider fan all along then you don't want to miss this one. Try the controls. Get used to them and you will feel that whole TR thing all over again. ;)

this part is only a preface or an intro

hi everyone... dont be fast to judge... when u play the game you must be patient to adapt the controls... any way, this game is juat an intro to the coming up series... i m sure, that after u finish it, u will understand nothing... who knew how lara escaped egypt? it is so dull, that's why it is called angel of DARKNESS... the upcoming series will reveal everything, but i also hope that they make it more harder bcz this one is so easy...

It's a fun game, in spite of the bugs

I'm a TR fan, and I enjoyed the game. The bugs (and they are there) are slightly annoying, and the game is not as responsive as I would have liked (especially Kurtis- becoming Kurtis is what really dropped the game down from 5 to 4 stars.) But, all in all, I would recommend it, I enjoyed it, can't wait for the next!

OK, I just have to say that I have played the last 3 Tomb Raider gemes, and I love them! Out of the last three, I thought Tomb Raider 4 The Last Revelation was the best. It was very long, and that is something I like. The graphics in TR4 were better than the second, and the length of the fith (Tomb Raider Chronicles) was just too short. I felt I had not gotten my moneys worth on the fith one. I am waiting patiently for the return of Laura! I ordered the game back in October 2002, and I can't hardly wait. The screen shots look great, and I am excited to see what Eidos has come up with...AJ

Sorry to say, Tomb Raider is one of the worst games i've ever played on any system. I bought the original after hearing it was "da bomb," and was severly disappointed. Played the others incarnations, and they [stunk] as well, so my hopes aren't high for TR:AOD.

You really have to keep at it...is IS good.

OK here's how it is.
I'm a dedicated Tomb Raider fan. Every single TR title i've played and enjoyed many, many times. If I could only play one game for the rest of my life it would be a TR title.
Right, that's that out the way.
If you scroll down you'll see a review of the new TR title 'Angel Of Darkness' by myself and it's not a pretty sight!
Rather than repeat everything here, my main gripe with this game was:-

New controls:Not just the compulsary analogue sticks but the frustrating control system, everything seems delayed and Lara's running is so slow.

The first 5 or 6 levels are so boring, very little in the way of danger and the 'interactive speech' is very lame. It also slows things down as you can't play from scratch without 'speaking' to the characters as a chain reaction amongst the next character has to be started. It tries to be a Broken Sword type game but just doesn't pull it off.
I was ready to chuck the whole thing in, after 3 weeks of playing I wasn't enjoying it one bit. I couldn't walk ten paces without waiting for the next small level to load. Very annoying and very boring. Nothing seemed to happen.

OK, now i've kept at at out of respect for the other games and people saying 'Hey, it's ok, keep at it.'
Problem was I didn't want to keep at it because I wasn't enjoying it one bit.
Anyway after the stop and starts something finally happened.
I found I was enjoying it. Puzzles appeared, that gruelling intereactive speech stopped and I was mastering the controls at long last.
Now the old TR feel was coming back. I was thinking about the puzzle/level I was stuck on and wanted to have 'just one more go.'
Cripes.
Anyway here' my verdict after nearly a month of, admittedly, infrequent gameplay.

Pretty damn good!

I know the problems most of you will face and that's the controls.
Yeah, I hated them too but you do pick them up. It does take a while but keep using the R3 button which helps a lot. The long jumps are still hit and miss but not as frustrating as they first seemed.
The controls still need to be tweaked and the analogue option is a must.

My advice to anyone either thinking about buying this game or who have bought it and are put off by the early levels:-

Give it a go. Get used to the controls, don't be put off by the slow early levels, once you reach the night club you'll be back in TR heaven. It is still a lot slower and the locations are not as exciting as previous games but hey, it's still TR.

I've heard the game is riddled with bugs, well my PS2 version is ok inasfar as freezes or falling off of 'solid' platforms etc.
Maybe the PC version is temperamental but I had no problem.

Just stick with it, I did and I recant my previous review slating the game, which is still my first reaction.
It's a shame the early levels are so misleading and will put off the casual gamer and potential buyers. I should know, I was one of them.
