Well, race fans, the day you were waiting for has arrived. Gran Turismo 3 has been released. This is, easily, the best racing sim for the PS2. Granted, it may not be the most "realistic" racing sim, but it is just complex enough to make it fun for the sim crowd, yet it offers enough options to make it fun for the arcade crowd.
As many have griped before, there are things missing. The damage model is a prime example (especially missed after seeing your beautiful $120,000 Porsche crumpled like a tin can in PC games like Need For Speed 5: Porsche unleashed). But, this is not a pure sim, so this gripe can usually be overlooked.
But the graphics... mmmmm.... simply beautiful. Half the time, you just want to sit back and watch the replay of your races. The camera angles, the lighting, the sounds, and all the "special touches" (like the heat waves wafting up from the track) all make this one of the must-haves for any PS2 owner.
My personal biggest gripe: the controls are too hard to get used to with the gamepad. The new wheel/pedal system should be better, but alas, I don't have one, so I can't comment first-hand.
***!!!Worth the wait...I promise!!!***

Forget all this negativity and speculation. I now OWN the game, and it lives up to everything I had hoped. That's all I have to say...I'm wasting valuable free-time that I could utilize earning my International-A License.
I digress

I had rated GT3 shortly after I had bought it and gave it 4 stars based on a few of it's 'short-comings', namely the shortage of cars and the difficulty in attaining cash initially. Well, I've changed my mind. I bought the game on the release date and I haven't stopped playing it since. It's been two months now, and I'm only 45% completed in the Simulation mode! I own and have beaten both of it's predecessors, so I'm what might be considered an advanced player. The replayability of the game is unmatched. Oh yeah, one tip....no matter how many times you have to race it, keep going at the Endurance race at the Super Speedway. The Formula 1 car you can win in this even in unparalleled. I nearly left a protein stain in my shorts after driving it the first time. The handling in that car is AMAZING! And I thought the Escudo was tight!

I have to defend this game for Sony.... This game is probably the best game I have ever Played.... Oh by the way this game was well worth the wait. Polyphony Digital should have there you know what Bronzed. You can trade in all your other games too because you wont even want to play them anymore. The few people who bashed it must not have even played it. Every car feels different and the Handeling is the best I ever felt in any racing game. Some said the graphics did not impress. Try it with a good TV and component video and you will not want or need to ever leave the house again. You must Buy it!

Wow.....I can't close my mouth....Wow. . when I first look at the graphics, I simply cried. Im grad that they took off those cars that are useless. I mean even though there are over hundreds of car types, whoes gonna ride every each one of them?? when I was playing GT2, I only used 6 to 8 cars(I bought almos every cars on GT2 even that new beatle) because some of the cars I bought was simply not ridable!! especially corvets...so...why bother? you don't need 100+ models of cars damn it!! this game is a must have. you can not say you own a play station 2 without having this game on your game libraly.
Really Impressive!

I am truly impressed by this game after playing for about 4 hours. My friend thought he was watching a televised race when he saw the replay...its unbelievable how realistic it is. As for the gameplay the controls are smooth, the cars look fantastic, and the courses are extremely detailed (first decent looking crowds I've ever seen on a console). I've heard people say that GT3 doesn't really expand the gameplay much from GT2, I don't know about this because I didn't play GT2 that much. If this is true then it might deter hardcore driving sim fans who mastered GT2 but newer guys like myself should pick this game up in a heartbeat. If nothing else its worth getting because its the best looking driving game out on any console for the time being.

Gran Turismo 3 sets the state of the art in real time video game graphics. When you see the intro video at the start, believe what your eyes see because that IS what the game looks like. By far the replay system is the most advanced ever. The replay allows for real life television quality footage of your races by doing color bleeds, inversions, fades, blurs, and heat simmers.
The actual gameplay is terrific especially if you enjoyed the challenging driving of the previous GTs. Traction control is turned on automatically though, and it seriously makes your car slower and hurts your ability to win races. As soon as I took traction control off, I was back blaring down the road and careening into corners like a crazy man, but that is where the fun and challenge is, learning to take the corners without traction control and still being able to keep your car from spinning out.
I am truly dissapointed that there is a huge bias of the available cars. It's mostly the recent decade's worth of japanese auto's and more fancy Le Mans and F1 racing vehicles. I wanted to see more oldies muscle cars like those in GT2. Sadly, I can no longer own a 1969 Corvette Stingray in GT3. If only Polyphony Digital had spent more time to include more cars! if Only!!! (But maybe that is why it is called GT3 A-Spec? Perhaps a naming convention to allow a sequel to GT3 for the PS2 that has more cars later?)
The menu interface is improved over GT2, now you can restart a race immediately if you mess up, rather than having to go through 3 different menus to restart the race (like the old GT2 menus).
The music is a little more pop rock and remixy. There are some very good selections of songs that are perfect for watching the replays (think recent car commercials and their soundtracks). But the GT2 soundtrack I think still holds a bit of a better selection of songs for *Driving*. It seems that most of the songs in GT3 were ideal for just watching the replays. (Also, it is annoying not being able to adjust the volumes of the music or the sounds)
Overall this is the game to own if you have a PS2, and the game that will bring many to the stores to get a PS2. If you haven't played GT2 yet then GT3 will be the best thing you have ever touched.
Gameplay 5/5
Sound 4/5
Music 3/5
Visuals 10/5 (yes they are that good)
Addictiveness 6/5

If you don't already have a Playstation 2 and are thinking about purchasing one, Gran Turismo 3 will sway you towards a purchase. If you already have a Playstation 2 this is a game you must have.
The graphics on this game are not only so good they look prerendered, but the frame rate never seems to drop either, making for a very smooth playing experience. The audio rocks also, taking advantage fully of a high performance audio system like the THX certified 5 piece set offered by Altec Lansing.
Seasoned Gran Turismo drivers from the original two games will not find much difference in the licensing requirements or the overall handling of each car while driving. To make the most of the Gran Turismo experience, one needs to try out Logitech's wheel and pedal set. The force feedback generated from the wheel makes the experience that much more realistic.
The Artificial Intelligence is quite more aggressive in this game - I've had computer drivers flat out cut me off and even stop driving "by the book" as they usually do and beat me with cheap maneuvers.
The only gripes I had about the game were that it has less cars than Gran Turismo 2 and there's no collision damage to cars, however that can be used to a cheap advantage as players can slam into walls at 90MPH and keep driving like nothing happened.
If you're going to get any game this is definitely a must have

I have been reading the reviews submitted for Gran Turismo 3 and felt obligated to place one of my own.
The game is great, graphics and sound is unbelievable with an excellent music soundtrack on top of it. I will admit that the selection of cars is smaller than in GT1 & GT2 but honestly people, do we really need 7 used 1991 Nissan Pulsar's in the game?
The game engine is a little ancient, but why fix something that isn't broken? It worked fine for GT1 & GT2 no one complained about it, why are people complaining about it now?
I have seen people suggesting Twisted Metal Black over GT3....that's depressing. How can you even compare the two games? One is a racing simulator...and one is a game where you drive around a car for 8 levels shooting missiles at other cars. I have played Twisted Metal Black, I rented it and threw the controller down in disgust within 10 minutes of turning it on. Mind you I have never been a Twisted Metal fan so I am not saying it's a bad game. Twisted Metal Black is exactly the same as it was years ago, at least GT3 has made improvements.
wow!!!

my jaw was on the floor when i played my first race. this by far has to be one of the greatest looking racing games out there. the graphics are awsome. watching the replay,i would forget that im watching a game. it looks that real. as far for game play goes. the A.I. is right on. you really have to earn all of your wins (if can you win). this is also one of those games with a lot of game play. theres no way you can finish this in a day. its probably has months and months of game play. some races have around 80 laps. over all i would recomend this to all racing fans. its just a fun game.
