Not Good Enough!

Sorry, Diablo 2 just doesn' cut it! After playing Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale, Diablo2 just seems obsolete for it's time. Icewind Dale comes out as the superior due not only to its accumulation of the wonderfully complex character attributes and characteristics, but also the continuing improvements in the whole game!
Over rated, not much better than Diablo 1

There are obvious improvements with Diablo 2 such as improved character developement and better graphics. But there really isn't a whole lot better about this game than its predicessor. Also, the fact that the game has been delayed and delayed some more has really got me wondering if they are ever going to get this right. Who knows, maybe the final version might change my mind, but this latest beta doesn't make me want to go stand in line and buy it whenever it does come out.

Oh my god! this gfame is so boring. This game is so predictable. I played it for 12 hours (not strait) and got so bored I wanted to play Super Troll Island! The graphics are okay, the enemy has no tactics except for swarm and die,the music is kool but not worth the gamplay. Dont get this game unless you are a hardcore gore lover, like cheesey graphics, or love rpgs to the point where you rename yourself after your favorite charactor.
laggy, frustrating online play

I've been playing this game since it came out in 2000. The game really is a lot of fun, and somewhat addictive, and it has great replayability. That said, the online experience has gotten sufficiently bad that I'm giving it up. I'm writing this review to warn prospective customers NOT to waste their money on this game.
The problems with internet D2 play are twofold. First, there's a lot of lag since the most recent patch came out. I mean -- a LOT of lag. It's serverside. Apparently Blizzard decided to economize on the support for D2, because it does not provide a monthly revenue stream the way WoW does. It's not clear how they did this, but a good guess would be that they set up a scheme that allows servers to steal cycles from individual games in order to run more games on each server. Whatever the mechanism, the result is that there are constant "lag spikes" running through games, sometimes causing play to freeze for as much as 15 or 20 seconds. It's not fun. The long lag spikes often cause player death, and the short ones are so numerous that some player activities (like "teleporting" by sorceresses) can be annoyingly jerky, with the character sometimes appearing to cast the teleport skill repeatedly without moving at all. It's now quite common for a player to have to press a skill button twice to get the selected skill to change, or to have to click on an NPC in town two or three times to interact. Very frustrating, and no probability Blizzard will fix the problem. After all, as mentioned, D2 provides no revenue stream.
The second problem is hacks, cheating, and "botting" by unscrupulous players. Despite assurances from Blizzard that online play on "the realms" is "secure", hacks and cheats are endemic. Blizzard's response has been at best ineffectual. They have finally settled on an "anti-bot" strategy that relies on the simple expedient of penalizing everyone. For example, it's now inevitable that a player repeatedly creating two-minute games to do magic-find runs will at some point receive a temporary ban from online play that lasts for one to several hours. More severe violations, like making successive games less than a minute apart , result in punishment much faster. This means that if you create a game, and it's a really horrible lagfest where your character can hardly move and you don't dare leave town, you're stuck with the game for three full minutes. As like as not, ditching the laggy game within the first minute to try creating a new one will get you banned for an hour. And if your game dies, as happens all too often in the new battle.net, you'll be treated to both a rollback that loses some of your experience AND a stint in the "penalty box" where you won't be able to create games for as much as an hour.
Sound like fun to you? Didn't think so. Despite the enjoyment I've gotten from this game, my advice to you is to avoid it unless you have a sky-high tolerance for frustration.
Playable but Frequently Tedious and Annoying

Diablo 2 is either a hack and slash adventure or a blast everything in sight with magic adventure, or several other variants that involve killing 1000s of stupid monsters. I guess evil is supposed to be stupid, at least in this game it is. It helps that the monsters are stupid because there are just so many of them.
I would like to play this game with each type of character and I've already played a Paladin, Barbarian, and now I'm playing a Sorcerer. Game play is very different for each character type. The sorcerer tends to overpower the game but she is vulnerable to damage so she will die if surrounded, or if a tough monster rushes at her and gets through her magical armor.
I like the variety of items in the game, it adds to playability. And there is enough gameplay to come back a few times, but I don't think I'll get through the goal of playing each character type before getting bored.
There are a few annoying flaws in the game which I would like to share that haven't already been mentioned: The monsters tend to hide behind walls and the walls don't always become invisible when you should clearly be able to see those monsters. Some of the walls become invisible but not all of them. I like being surprised but when something should be in plain sight it should be visible. Also, the line of sight calculations often are off, and the monsters can throw spears or fire magic through walls, which also means you can hit them back, but you don't ever know what is line of sight, even if it seems obvious. Also, monsters have this strange knack of appearing when you have the inventory open filling half of the screen, but maybe that's just a coincidence. And when the inventory screen is open, you can't just click on something to pick it up as you normally do, you have to take an extra step to put it in the exact spot you want it, which is slow and annoying. This is standard Diablo style. The other annoying inventory thing is that when you need to run away from the monsters and there is something to search between where you are and where you want to go, you'll always seem to search it even if you don't necessarily click on it. The last thing I want to do when I'm in danger is to hesitate and search for useless treasure or pick things up that are on the ground.
It's nice that the names of items that are magical or special are highlighted in a different color so you don't have to pick everything up to tell if it's magical. And it's nice having keyboard keys to activate your skills.
There is a nice variety of skills/spells that are appropriate for each character type. Make sure you check out all of the skill tabs, there are three for each character type. I agree that the experience system isn't the best. They should have kept the way you learned spells and skills as in the old game, by having spell books and people to learn skills from.
That's about all I can think of right now. You get a lot for your money in this game, in the sense that there are so many levels and it's different every time, but you get what you pay for in the sense of stupid repetitive monsters, a simple storyline, and annoying glitches. The most annoying one is it not saving the level state when you save and quit, which I've found the only way to get around is to just leave Diablo open and alt-tab when you get sick of the mass slaughter. Of course, it still takes up almost 100% of your CPU even with a faster computer, so that isn't the best solution.
nice at first

but gets old really quick.... nothing truly innovative about the game and there is no way that it can or should be classified as an rpg.... far too easy to beat... try a real rpg instead of this: BG I & II, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment

Most of us have heard the adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Well, it seems the crew from Blizzard doesn't subscribe to that theory. After just two hours, I grew extremely bored by what I deem to be a very overated, and underdeveloped game.
Anyone who has ever played the original Diablo likely became addicted to the gritty realism of the game. From the defined movements of your character, to the very real danger of each new level, Diablo set a new standard that its sucessor fails to live up to.
First off, Diablo II has a different, more cartoony appearance that I felt was far below the pin-point realism of the original. In fact, the graphics are shoddy, even with my 16MB video card.
Second, and the reason I became quickly bored with the game, was its relative ease. The first time out, I used the Barbarian to cut a swath through the opposition and the character never even came close to being killed. It was just BORING! After that, I used the Paladin and advanced further in the game by wiping out every bad guy on the screen. Even after being surrounded by more then a dozen of them, I fought my way through without problem. That would never have happened in the first game if your character was only 4th level.
The monsters in Act I are ridiculously easy to kill, and they give up a obscene amount of treasure. I don't know what the guys at Blizzard had in mind for this level, but its just too simple for even a relatively novice gamer like me.
So far, I've progressed through most of Act I, but I really don't even want to continue. The game so far is just boring, and not much of a challenge. In fact, I offered to sell the game to my buddy to recoup at least $25 of the $50 I paid for this crappy product.
Buuyer beware; this game bites.

This game rules! I was addicted to Diablo (the first one) a few years ago, and when I saw this a coupla months ago, I couldn't believe my eyes! The graphics (not great, but really good), the gameplay, and the characters have all been upped in quality and quantity from the Game Of The Year in 1996, and as far I am an concerned, one of the better games of all times. Diablo 2 is for all of you poor Mac-owners out there!
Decent game, same old stuff

Ya know, it's been a while since I've had a computer, and it's been a really long time since I've played D&D. Finally my girlfriend let me play around on her Mac, so I went to the store and bought Diablo 2, first of all it was a little cheaper than the other games and second of all I don't really know anybody that I can roleplay with so I bought the game to saisfy those needs. I had played Diablo a couple of times, so I knew what the game was all about. Well I wasn't expecting anything really spectacular but I figured it would be a little more exciting than the original. Well I was wrong. It wasn't spectacular at all. It's just a little spruced up from the original version and regardless of them adding a little here and there, it's nothing special. I've played the game for about 3 days now and after all this time of being away from the stuff it should be easy to impress me and that's what Diablo 2 has failed to do.
One simple Flaw killed it......

This game would have been a MASTERPIECE, had it have not been for the stupidity of blizzard. This game WOULD be extremely fun, but there is one flaw, and this one flaw ruins how much I enjoyed the game: The damn saving option. This really pissed me off. After a hard 3 hours straight of battling, you find out you have to run off to work, so you save and quit the game. After a hard 8 hours of work, you look forward to playin the pretty fun game of Diablo 2 once again. you pop the Cd in the drive, start up the game....WHAT THE HELL?? I JUST BEAT ALL THESE ENEMIES! yes that is right. After you save and quit, the enemies return. sure, its a good way to earn experience, but i think it goes a little too far when you have to defeat about 200 enemies and spend about an hour JUST to get back to where you left off on your last play. At first it's not that bad, mainly because the enemies are not that hard, and there are not many of them. but once i got to the third act, i got so frustrated i just quit the game and didnt play it for a month. This gets so frustrating and time-consuming it is unreal.
I loved the first Diablo, and right after i beat it i went out and bough diablo 2 with an expansion pack RIGHT AWAY, expecting this FANTASTIC game, and all i got was a 3 hour excitement from the first 2 acts. Now, i am going to auction it off of ebay as quick as possible, as the sight of the box i have reminds me of the mistake i made of spending a total of 40 dollars on such crap
