I have recently had the amazing world of Diablo 2 revealed to me. I played the original Diablo, but after reaching about the sixteenth level, i got really tired of it, as fun as it was. Now, playing Diablo 2 with its vast environments, i feel like im in heaven. Diablo 2 is not just a cool game, but a well made one too. The gameplay is slick and fast, but so fast that you feel overrun. The storyline is amazing, the environments are interesting, new, and occasionally quite creepy, and the inventory system is wel thought out. The new addition of your "private stash" immensly aids the gameplay. Other additions, like the gems, ethereal items, and mercenaries make the game even more enjoyable. My only real complaint is how poor the graphics are. They pretty much just are plain old bad. They could have made them much better.
All this said, I think that Diablo 2 is one of the best RPG's i have played in a long time, worthy of being compared to modern hits such as Elder Scroll 3: Morrowind and Baldur's Gate. Even with its poor graphics, its still one of the greatest games ever, and it should be played by every PC gamer out there
An unregretable buy

The thing about diablo 2 is that it is one of the best, and most addictive, games ever. You can say all you want about how it is all hack and slash and repeats and the bad graphics, but when it comes down to the enjoyment of the gamer, this is the game. I recieved this game 3 years ago, and today, I still play it over new games that have been very highly rated. I recently recieved Tony Hawk Underground, Return of the King, Eye Toy, and NBA Street vol. 2, and yet this was the game which I was playing the next day, trying to get better. Diablo has kept my attention so long for many reasons. First is the incredibly addictve gameplay No matter how good you are, you can always get better, and this creates a constent need to get better. Whether it's stats, skills, or weapons, there is always an improvment to get. The quests are simply a side thought, but they are still helpful. And the hacking just adds on to the fun, because even though it is fun to not cheat, sometimes you just want to go out and destroy all those characters that are giving you so much trouble in the real game. Overall, great game, so don't get it if you want to (your loss), but if you do consider it, stop looking at all the technical stuff and just buy it. The technical stuff tells you nothing, but just playing this game is as fun as a videogame will get.
Susan should buy this

The Legendary Diablo2.
7 or 8 years after its release... the genre defining Hack-and-Slash RPG. Still played by many. Addictive, epic, and fun.
1.Combined with the expansion, The best item/loot system in any game, EVER.
Simply speaking, this game is about items, obtaining them, using them etc... they can make or brake a character (combat-wise). They can increase your mana or HP pool 10 times... they can make your skills several times more powerful than if you wouldn't had them, etc. Items ranging from ordinarily common to so rare and unique you may never see them drop.
The range and spectrum of stats/attributes on items is enormous.
2.Skill/abilities system second only to Guild Wars (imo).
3.Amazing art style (graphically). Lots of shiny J
4.Simple linear story. There are about 20 quests altogether and most are obligatory for advancing the game.
5.Difficulty ranges from stupidly easy to insanely hard.
6.Max lvl is 99 and because of exponential lvling curve it takes lots of grind to reach it.
Online economy in this game is complex. It suffered lots of abuse and different kinds of exploits by less then honest players.
Game patches/updates changed many things in the game over and over again.

This game may provide some entertainment for the first three days or so, but after that, like the first Diablo, it really gets old fast. What is this game, anyway? It's certainly NOT an RPG by any standard. Is it an action game? Not really. A true action game should require some hand-eye coordination and sensitive timing. It's just click and hack here. Is this a strategy game? No. Strategy requires some variation in tactics, situations, and adjustment in gameplay as you progress. The only strategy here is to lure the monsters back to a door, wait there, and hack them down as they try to come through one by one. Strangely, though, even in spite of its extremely simple-minded play, it is fairly addictive, at least for a short time.
There was a freeware game put out on the net about 10 years ago, created by some Stanford students. It was called Moira Balrog, a fantasy hack/slash game with dungeons drawn out with simple ASCII characters. The object was to kill your way through about 20 dungeon levels, and kill Moira at the end. Each dungeon level was randomly generated every time you played a new game. There was a town where you could buy and sell goods, weapons, armor, and such. There were several hundred items in the game. You would go into the dungeon, hack monsters, get stuff, level, and then teleport back to town where you would sell old stuff and buy new stuff. And you keep working your way down until you hit Moira. Sound familiar?
I have to give Blizzard credit - they really know how to milk this cow for all its worth. This game may be worth buying at $25.00 - $30.00, but it's certainly not worth blowing $50.00+ on.
i've played much better

when i first bought the game i was very excited. when i first started i thought it was great. then as i got farther into i noticed the lack of an interesting plot. just click. click. click. if u want a true rpg, with plot,go for something along the lines of planescape:torment, or bg2. i gave this 2 stars for one reason. after having a true challenge in bg2(baldur's gate 2) it is a pleasent change of pace for about 15 min 2 just kill things
Is this even an RPG?

First of all, isn't an RPG where you "fill the shoes" of a virtual persona and "play them" in every way: interaction with virtual characters, a developing plot, personal goals, aims, ambitions and achievements, etc? Something like a good novel, or movie, perhaps, with "real" characters you become addicted to?
Diablo II doesn't match any of this criteria...tell me how it is different from Hexen (which is definitely NOT RPG, don't you even tryto say so)? You adventure around, kill monsters, gain exp, get more items, and go kill more monsters, getting tougher and tougher monsters until you kill the biggest monster...
So from what's up here, it looks like Diablo II is an *action* game, or an *adventure* game, but let's not slander the good name of CRPGs with this title. It in no way actually immerses you in a real virtual world, the same goes for Diablo.
That isn't a reason to give it a bad review, though...we have to look at it from an action game perspective, though, instead of an adventure perspective.
To start with, as many people have mentioned, we have the "incessant mouse clicking" which soon gets tiring. It may be enjoyable to some people, but I am not captivated enough by the battle scenes to overlook the mouse-clicking.
The second point is the tiring "tried and true" strategies your characters come up with. You get the best weapons and/or skills, and go kill monsters all the same way, only changing your tactics when you get "bigger guns". This is not a flame against the players, who make a sensible choice in this, but a flame against the designers, who design their world to conform to this. Eventually, though, this bores me...run up to the enemy, cast a spell/slash a lot, and they're dead...then you can move on, and on, and on...
But the reason why I gave this game two stars instead of one is the fact that the graphics are pretty good. It's a sharp looking game, and is very attention-grabbing at first...then you actually play it, and only the action/adventure fans can keep their hands on the mouse and not on the keyboard....
To top it off...if Doom is your game, Vas-y! But to those who play RPGs for the immersive plot and character development...it's best to play those games that *actually* feature it: Fallout and Fallout II (Not quite as much as others, but feature a lot of intelligent problem solving and world interaction with the character), Planescape: Torment (A truly awesome game), and others...which I will be playing soon but have not yet.
Looking back at this list, I see that there aren't really many good RPGs in the world today...possibly because the RPG market is being hogged by action games in drag. I hope that more games come out that are truly worthy of the title RPG.
One of the best games of all time

This is simply a superb game, and is very stable (don't listen to those who have said it does not run, it has more to do with their machine than with the game). Anything I did not like about the first has been changed in this game, like the ability to run, this is a god send.
This game has a rich story line, superb game play, great graphics, awesome movie cut-aways that are truly stunning, and an increased array of characters to use. The character skill progressions are much more diverse as well, and call into play some real strategy and forward thinking. I especially love the Necromancer who can summon skeletons, golems, etc. to fight along side him. The attention to detail on the characters look is also very satisfying, whatever you wear directly influences your characters appearance on the screen, unlike the first game, where the look was somewhat generic. You can also hire NPC's to fight along side of you at various stages of the game, which also adds depth.
I also enjoy the chapter structure of the game that brings you to different towns and wilderness areas. It reduces the repetitivness of the first game.
The maps of the levels are truly vast as well which makes the game much more challenging and interesting, and the fact that many are outdoors, (desert, jungle, highlands, woods, temple ruins, and finally hell) as opposed to spending the entire game in one long dungeon.
I tell you that I am not a big fan of real time games or arcade type shooters, but this game holds your attention for untold hours, and is replayable. I have completed it with 3 of the four characters before burning out a bit. I look forward to playing the expansion and using the Assassin and Monk.
The online play is vastly improved from the first. With a dsl connection it is virtually indistinguishable from the solo version, and fun.
Trust me, get this game.
