First things first. This game IS fun, and it got two stars for that only.
Diablo 2 was fun for a while. Not a long while like Neverwinter Nights, but a little while. I didn't make it too far into the game because I lost track of the plot, and the game itself was far too repetitive. Every battle seemed to be the same, and it was all too easy. The battel system was just point and click, and there was no strategy to it at all. I know, this is just supposed to be a hack and slash, but it fails even at that.
The graphics are moderately good, they are not bad but not real good either. The sound is good, probably one of the best parts of the game.
If you want a hack and slash to be addicted to for less than a week, this is the way to go. You'll be back. If you want a hack and slash to play for a while, may I reccomend any of the Icewind Dale's. If you want a hack and slash with a real good plot, try Neverwinter Nights.
I do reccomend this game, but don't go wasting your money on it right now, wait until it is in the bargain bin, so's you don't get mad when you end up geting the game and becoming sick of it in three days.

If you liked Dungeoun Siege or Divine Divinity type games but never played this classic, do so today. You get get it anywhere for super cheap and its so fun and addictive. For those who like more in depth stories and less clickity clicking, go pick up Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, or Morrowind. But if you want super-clicking, level-uping, and finding more powerful weapons, armours, and magicks, then this addictive clickfest of killing the damned creatures from the pits of the hells is the game for you.
Go back to the time when this action rpg ruled the world. It still does, because it's still fun and awesome (and see how long your sucky ass lasts in hell mode baby!).
Fun at first, but fails to captivate.

First of all let me say that there is a large audience who loved the first Diablo and will undoubtedly love the sequal. This review is targeted for the rest of you who may not have caught on to the craze or the hype.
Like many long awaited sequals, Diablo 2 was destined to receive as much anti-hype as hype. One of the biggest challenges Diablo 2 had to overcome was the treemendous anticipation and expectations that revolved around it. I wasn't one of the fan's who were waiting with baited breath for the release, so I'll try to remain objective.
One of the nicest things about Diablo was the cool CG scenes between chapters and at the beginning of the game. The story was well thought out and after watching the first movie I was really hyped to play. While not a facet of the overall game, they were impressive and worth mentioning.
Another cool aspect of the game were the tons of weapons to choose from, especially with the barbarian who can use two weapons simultaneoulsy. Unfortunately you can't leave things sitting on the ground like you could in the first Diablo. gold and weapons go into your stash. Once it's full anything you leave on the ground will disappear when you quit the game.
Diablo 2 is entertaining, but failed to really captivate my attention to the very end. I found the game to be unstable on my system which meets the minimum requirements, which was a constant annoyance. It may not happen to you, but it was a contributing factor to my level of satisfaction with the game.
One of my biggest complaints with the game is that it seems repetitious. The hack and slash elements are fun, but RPG's have come a long way since the first Diablo was a hit several years ago. There is little in the way of variety. The same monsters are colored differently, given new names, made a little tougher and we're supposed to believe it's a new monster. Eventually even the combat, the saving grace of the game, gets old after you wade through wave after wave of monsters that are far more irritating than threatening.
The other big letdown is that they really haven't evolved the RPG aspect of the game since the first one. Unlike other RPG's (which I'll get to in a moment) the hirelings and NPC's are static and almost worthless. You can't interact with them, you can't change their weapons and all their really good for is taking some of the heat off your back until they are inevitably slaughtered.
The game is far more interesting in multiplayer as long as your not trying to connect to battle.net. If you're like me, however and are barely able to meet the game's minimum requirements and aren't priveleged enough to have a cable-modem, you might as well give it up. The lag will drive you insane.
All in all, Diablo 2 is a nice little distraction for a couple of days, but it is no t the best RPG or dungeon crawler on the market. If you want a REAL RPG and not just a dungeon crawler, get one of the many fine Interplay games on the market. Baldur's Gate 2 may be available by the time you're reading this, but you can already get Icewind Dale, Torment (which is fantastic), Baldur's Gate 1 and the expansion pack, and even the Fallout games, which may be dated but are far more entertaining than Diablo 2.
Gameplay and Graphics - nice combo!

Blizzard Entertainment has done it again. With vast new territory to explore, five new character classes, plenty of dungeons, caverns and crypts for folks to explore in each town, and an abundance of new weapons and spells its hard to not continue playing in order to see all the new additions. Key commands are the same which makes for a smooth transition from Diablo to Diablo II. One of the nicer features is the "autosave" in single-player mode - granted if you die you lose your gold (something that multiplayer does not experience)
Single Player games keep the same game seed. Meaning the layout remains the same when you exit and enter - however, the monsters are still being randomly generated so those will change.
When playing multiplayer games, the more players there are the more gold, items and experience you may gain of course this also means the life of the monsters increase as well :)
Way Points are also a huge plus. Once you get to a Way Point in another town this becomes a quick and easy way to get from one place to another without having to use a Teleportation spell (however, it never hurts to have a few in your inventory).
Learn who your allies are and what they can do. There are folks who are able to heal your mana and life points without sacrificing any gold. Also, you now have a chest in town which you can stash your items. Not a bad idea if you've got plenty of gold to carry but don't want to risk losing any (there is a cap of 500 so if you have 1000 and die you only lose 500).
Fun gameplay and non-stop entertainment. I'm pleased with this sequel and will be spending plenty of time advancing my character!

We have not been able to play the game. There are several quirks that need to be worked out. The blizzard tech support has listed them, but does not have the solution as of yet...quite disappointing to spend so much for a game we cannot play. No, its not our system. We justed upgraded. Oh well!
Good short-term fun but quickly bores

If you're looking for mindless, repetitive annihalation of baddies then you'll love this game. Total action with not much of a story. I equate Diablo II with a game I would rent for my Sony Playstation just to blow some time. It's fun for about 10 minutes after a long day at work and you need to release some stress, but after killing the same monsters over and over and not being able to save your progress it quickly becomes boring and frustrating.
After playing epic roleplaying games like BG, Torment and IWD, Diablo II is just not in the same league assuming the aforementioned games are Diablo's competitors. If I'm going to throw down (money) for a game I want to have a gaming experience that includes more than just clicking my left mouse button.
Multi player is horrible

this game could be good but blizzard was so unprepared for the launch there servers can't handle the load so you crash, become disconected, or can't even connect. You spen more time trying to play than actually playing.
AWESOME

I have been stress testing Diablo 2 and although the interface lloks the same, the gameplay is smoother and easier to pick up for new players - can't wait for the real thing to hit the shelves!

At first Diablo II seems very out of date in graphic quality and the linear plot... BUT it indeed is a excellent game. And it is a very player-oriented game. I am now in ACT III, from the very beginning I do not refer to user manual.Everything you need is clearly shown on the neat control panel. The most important and successful is, Diablo II bring us back to the very essence of RPG --to explore ,to fight, to enjoy the other-world. It avoids the boring ,complex weapon and armour setting (like Ultima), avoids lots of unused magic (like most RPG), avoids meaningless quest (like M&M). Only pure explore and direct quest. You know what you are doing now! It's so addictive that today I played it from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm....., oh my finger aches...
Awesome game!

Diablo 2 is not the type of game I would normally be interested in. I care little for RPGs in general, and am just not into the sort of medieval "swords and sorcery" theme of the game's storyline. However, I love Diablo 2. Few games have taken up as much of my free time as this one has. It is one of the most enjoyable and absorbing games on the market today.
Building your player/character is one of the highlights of Diablo 2. There are 5 character classes to choose from: Barbarians, Amazons, Sorceresses, Necromancers, and Paladins. Each of these is radically different from each other and provides an entirely different gaming experience. My favorite is the Necromancer: a spellcaster who can raise the dead and, among his other bizarre talents, explode the corpses of slain enemies in order to damage others standing near it. I don't know why, but seing this in action just never gets old to me. Each character also has 3 different skill trees, and gameplay varies even more depending on skills you choose to emphasize. Thus, an Amazon who specializes in the use of bows will play entirely differently from one who emphasizes the use of spears or javelins. Most character classes can also be crafted in a way emphasizes teamwork with other players online if you enjoy fighting alongside friends.
The graphics are a little dated and the storyline becomes repetitive, but who cares? It's gameplay that counts, and Diablo 2 contains hours and hours of it. I am just now, after many months of owning the game, beginning to tire of playing in single-player mode. Playing with other people online (plus the release of the Lord of Destruction expansion pack) has renewed my interest, though, and I think I will still be thoroughly entertained by this game for at least another year or two.
