Not for adults, Geared for young kids, or the Young at heart

Its wonderfull if you have a child under 10. My 12 and 13 year old love it. Its simple cute and remember designed for smaller children. Older kids will probably get bored with the game. Pikachu does simple tasks like fish, collect ingredients for a meal, play tag,PLay Pinata (If thats how you spell it) thunder bolt items, dig up buried treasure all with simpl commands like," PULL, DIG, OVER HERE, DROP IT, NO,LEFT, FORWARD, ECT" You get the point. He is cute and much like a giga pet but more interactive. So if you love pikachu and you are young at heart this cute little mouse will fit right in your family.

A great time for younger children if mom & dad help!

We have two young boys, ages 6 & 3. This is not a game that they can just pop in and play. I usually sit down and play it with them, I usually manipulate the controller. They love it. The voice recognition technology requires that you speak relatively clearly. Since pikachu understands certain words, and the controller must be manipulated at certain intervals, you must be able to read. We have been playing it semi-regularly for about one month now and at this point both boys know what to say at the appropriate time. If you are looking for a game that is alot of fun and one that you can sit down and participate with your younger children, this is a good choice. My boys love to call out the commands and words and see pikachu respond.

My favorite Pokémon N64 adventure!

It's nice to be able to have a Pokémon adventure that does not include continuous battles with other trainers, this is what makes games such as a Pokémon Stadium or Pokémon Puzzle League sort of boring after a while and makes games like this one and Pokémon Snap a break from constant battling.
"Hey you, Pikachu!" is one of the most innocent child-oriented Pokémon 3D Adventures, it takes you away from the standard world of Pokémon trainers into the world of Pokémon caregivers and your task is to raise a little wild Pikachu you find deep in Viridian Forest. Pikachu will take you along on picnics, fishing trips, piñata parties and simple fieldtrips where you meet a bunch of Pokémon favorites in their natural habitats. Sadly, only the sweetest and cutest Pokémon like Bulbasaur, Charmander, Oddish or Poliwag are included, larger, meaner Pokémon like Onix or Electabuzz (To name a pair) had to be excluded since they didn't fit in the game. The game has different places to visit, some of them come from the Pokémon Game Boy games and some are completely new. You can help Pikachu take care of little Caterpie and help them evolve into Metapod and then pretty Butterfree, help collect ingredients to have a picnic with Bulbasaur and help Pikachu water Oddish and evolve them into Gloom and Vileplume. The adventure is a lot of fun and the greatest thing about is the fact that the game does not revolve around making selections with the controller buttons, but you can actually use your own voice with a special Nintendo 64 exclusive device included with the game.

I've heard a lot of complaints about this VRU (Voice Recognition Unit) system, but I've never really had any problems with it. The system will work fine if you know how to use it properly. Here's a few tips for those who may find this device troublesome.

-Make sure your device is plugged onto the 4th controller slot, it will not work if connected somewhere else and make sure everything is plugged into place.

-Make sure your TV isn't too loud when you talk to Pikachu, because if it is the system will have trouble recognizing what you say.

-Speak proper English. Speak slowly and clearly and make sure you are not too close or too far apart from the mocrophone, have it right before your mouth.

-Also, see that you keep the appropiate "L" button pressed down the whole time while you speak and don't release it while you are talking.

If you follow those hints, the VRU shouldn't give you any problems. The only complaint I would have about this is the clip that attaches the microphone to the controller, it is very fragile and breaks easily, we had it replaced twice.

The game has decent graphics, standard Nintendo 64 and the animations and movements are sharp and well done. Pikachu is a very realistic Pokémon and behaves naturally. Pikachu is very cute and fun to play with, he acts like any real pet, he gets happy, excited, sad and angry and it is your job to keep him happy as much as you can. Surrounded with beautiful music and very heartwarming moments, the game is challenging, fun, entertainment and a must buy if you would like a break from Pokémon battling and take some time with another kind of Pokémon adventure.

Absolutely wonderful!

No money? No game!

If you really want to play with Pikachu without wasting too much money, I recommend that you go over to Blockbuster Video and rent it instead of buy it. Why? Because it costs way too much money! Otherwise, it's a fair game to play. You just have to be less than 12 years of age to play, or the game won't let you play it at all.

The world may not have A.I yet, but this game comes close.

I got this... well actually my brother got it... game for Easter. Now, to my 8-year-old brother, of course it's the coolest thing! It's like having a real Pikachu in your own house! I must admit, it is very neat. It's inexpensive, and you can play it for hours. You start off by meeting Pikachu and Prof. Oak (For you people who don't know Pokemon, Prof. Oak is, you could say, the founder of Pokemon.) and explains stuff. You then continue along and say "Pikachu!" Into the microphone, and he responds. I yelled "Idiot," "Eiffel Tower," and "Haley Barry" to Pikachu, and he didn't respond. Once I said "Pikachu!" he perks up. How cool is that?

This game has absolutely no plot. It has even lesser of a plot than "Dude, Where's my car." (Which is almost impossible.) Even though I'm 13, this game is still entertaining to me. Pikachu does respond to your commands (90% of the time.) The VRU (Voice-recognition unit) isn't the same as Stephen Spielberg's "Artificial Intelligence," but it makes the grade. Of course, when you're fishing, Pikachu does tend to ignore you. I will say "Pull!" and he'll release it. Once I said, "You're so cute!" (Because Prof. Oak told me too.) and Pikachu electrocuted me and had an angry face, and his "affection" level went down substantially. What it very cool is if you say "Quiz time!" while in the house. Pikachu will flash 10 pokemon, and you say their names into the microphone. It will actually tell you if it's right or wrong! However, I think about 3/10 of the time, it will not recognize the right answer, and mark it wrong. Sometimes Pikachu will press a wrong button (not your fault, his.) and you will suffer. Overall, gameplay's a 9/10

It's 64-bits, so you can't expect much. All characters are pretty impressive looking. Except when you play Quiz time, it is in 2D. The rest is very nice. Pikachu cannot talk, but he communicates with the tone of his voice, and sometimes a little word balloon will pop up, but it will be a picture. (A flower for "I understand," a light bulb for "I have an Idea," and a little black lined scribble if he is discouraged.) Sometimes the game glitches. Pikachu will run, then all of a sudden he will be in between a tree. It is very strange. Overall, except for the glitches, graphics deserve a 9/10.

The sound is important. Pikachu's tone will tell you his feelings. Most sounds are normal. Oddish goes "Oddish!" Poliwag goes "Poli! Poli!" and Charmander goes "Chaaaar! Chaaaar!" The music gets highly annoying though, like a broken record. When you move, a hand goes to the closest item. The weird sfx gets really aggravating. It's not even a sound! It sounds like a single maraca shake. It's really weird. Overall, the sound gets an 8.75/10

Speed is normal. Because it is N64 cartridge, it is very fast. Unlike the new Gamecube, which because of mass producing and increased game space, with CD's that take loading time, HYP is very fast. There is no loading time, and it takes less than half a second between days, where it saves your progress. Speed gets a perfect 10/10.

Now, the one thing I MUST complain about is the controlling. I cannot stand it! Ok, if you hold Z and talk then release it, a bubble is sent to Pikachu (with your comments) which works fine. But when you are trying to move around, your screen always shows Pikachu. You can be holding up and he will be going left or right. I cannot stand it, and if you buy it you will understand my aggravation. The controls get a crummy 6/10.

The replay value is great. You can always play a level again, and fishing is highly addicting, along with piñata party. You will play it over and over. Some games, like Caring for Caterpie, are not that much fun, and will probably only be played for Pikachu Points. The replay will get a special 10.5/10 because it is so amazing.

Overall, between all the Pokemon games on the N64, Hey You Pikachu is probably the best in original plot and replay.

Let's review:
Gameplay: 9/10
Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 8.75/10
Speed: 10/10
Controls: 6/10
Replay value: 10.5/10
Total: 53.25/60 giving Hey You, Pikachu! an 88.75.

This game is worth it if you give it some time!

I admit it, even though I am twenty years old I love this game. I read the other reviews posted here and many of you think that this game is dull or boring, or cute but not very interesting. I disagree. It was a bit tricky at first to master all the controls and to use them to my best advantage, but after I knew what I was doing, I found all sorts of neat little surprises in store for me.

A lot of the game is not just directing pikachu to hit a piniata or feed a Caterpie. The piniata level was the toughest level, since there are so many directions to give and the wrong word will not do as it intends you to do. It became an interesting challenge to master. But after the first time I got all three piniatas broken, I discovered some things like if you get closer and are really fast, you can pick up and store some of the piniata items for extra points. Re-visit the level repeatedly, and there will be new versions of the piniata game and, sometimes (though rarely), a HUGE piniata that Pikachu will have to break to reveal....what? It's a surprise, and a very cute one at that!

Doing simple interactions with Pikachu, especially around your room or the yard, will reveal lots of cute little things if you're patient. The room and yard isn't as threadbare as it first looks, because as you progress through the game, items from the various levels that you collect will appear in the room and yard, from vegetables to fill the garden to pirates swords and valuable gems for your room.

Follow Pikachu around in your room and play with him there. He will spontaneously do all sorts of cute things over time. It's like those handheld electronic pikachu games--the more you play it, the more you will see Pikachu do. That radio in the room isn't there for decoration, if you are patient and play the game long enough (usually, by the time you get to Pikchu's Daring Days) you may witness your little yellow pal striding on over to the radio, turning it on, and dancing to the tune! Many of these cute little things aren't essential to the game plot, but they are worth playing until you discover these secrets for yourself and see them in action.

There are many, many cute little things of this sort around Pikachu's world. Don't just follow directions and play the main points of the game....there are many hidden cute secrets to discover if you take your time, explore your world, and try different things with different objects. I could list a whole book of different things to be done, but I will let the reader discover that. I can garauntee you will be surprised.

'Oh how cute! It's pikachu! He'll listen to everything and will understand everything you say!' Yeah Right. The first time I saw an ad on TV for this game, it looked... cool. My friend got it for Christmas, so when I went over to he house, I tried it. Sure, we loved it. (Note: This was when it first came out, I'm ten now) Sure, cute little Pikachu. Listens to your every command.. I disagree. Pikachu is back and dumb as heck. When you call it for example, it's too busy blinking it's eyes or looking at a piece of dust or something stupid like that. I borrowed it from my friend less than year ago my 15 year old brother had to scream at the pikachu so it would at least turn around. You have to have perfect speach. I mean, PERFECT. Do one thing that pikachu barely dislikes and the thing could care less on what you have to say. I found my self actually almost bending the contoler in frustration. Trust me, this thing has a bratty attitude, you can't scold it, it hardly listens, it gets mad for no reason, and it will throw pieces of crap at you sometimes and start laughing. I'm not amused. :-) Trust me, big NO.

Do'nt believe what other people say. I am ten years old and own the game, and it has a huge challenge factor. The most challenging level is the Pinata Party. The Ochre Forest level is also an extremely hard level. The only downside is that it does not have any of the new pokemon from the Gold and Silver versions. This game is recomended to any Pokemon fan that can afford it.

Fun (Great Graphics too)

A wonderful game! You get to talk to Pikachu and play with him (or her) too. At first, Pikachu is a wild Pokemon, but it decides to come and live with you (I cried at that part). It has great graphics. If only I had known that it came with the new Pikachu Nintendo. (Then I would have sold my old one and bought it). (By the way, if you like Pokemon and want to talk, my e-mail is in my profile).
