Dark Age of Camelot -- Better than EQ but still the same

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

Mythic didn't dissapoint too many fans when it released "DAoC" -- but it definately didn't pioneer too much in the field of online gaming. For those new to the online gaming field, this is an excellent game to get and will definately give you a feel for the environment and experience you will get while playing a "Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game".

First of all, this is not a traditional roleplaying game in the sense of the word. There are really no "Online Role-Playing" games out today (arguably some old MUD's and stuff are) -- but you won't find traditional roleplaying in DAoC or Everquest.

The problem with all "MMORPG's" currently out today is they are insanely time intensive. If you want to be successful in the online community you are playing in, you will have to spend ALOT of time doing so.

Now, DAoC is better on time than Everquest. In Everquest, 12-24 hour raids are the normal, and are *required* for you to play the "end game" (getting the best equipment, stuff like that) -- and DAoC definately edges Everquest out in this department. You can log in to DAoC for 30 minutes and get something accomplished (whether it be advance a little to your next level, do something for a quest, or craft some armor/weapons or items, you CAN do it in DAoC) -- and in Everquest you pretty much need to dedicate at least a few hours to do anything really.

Another notch up on Everquest that DAoC has is its PvP (or Player vs. Player) environment. PvP is totally optional in DAoC (although you WILL get involved, its like buying a car and only driving it in first gear) -- and it is pretty well developed. Those who enjoy PvP will like this game much much more than Everquest.

Mythic Entertainment also provides much better customer support than Verant. Verant was almost infamous in the market as being extremely unhelpful and lost ALOT of customers due to their poor service. Now that Verant finally has some competition, they have revamped their customer service and it's a bit better.

Mythic is constantly updating DAoC to try and make it better for their player. They communicate well (and exponetially better than Verant) to their player-base and try to keep them informed.

Now for the cons. -- Dark Age of Camelot is time intensive and may be lacking content and an overall "sense of accomplishment" in the end.

Everquest has far more actual "content" than DAoC at the moment, mainly because EQ has been out for 2 more years than DAoC, and also because 2 expansions have been released for EQ. But never fear, Mythic is releasing an expansion soon that looks good.

Unfortunately, as I said before, to be successful in any of these games it will take a lot of your time. Theres really no way around this, but be warned that the game might become addictive!

Overall, I believe DAoC is a better overall game than EQ, and will offer a more rewarding experience both socially and role-playing wise.

4 Stars for DAoC.

lost interest in the level grinding

played this game for nearly 7 months paying 12.95 for the privelege top characters were a 32 level hero and a 34 level champ i found drops in one of the realms not to be on level or useful item prices at the merchants way beyond reasonble compared with hunting and selling items that were hunted
i found some very rude players on line and some nice ones as well
without help or guild it was very hard to play , some of the fan sites boards were increidabley flaming instead of helpful and encouraging
in the end it is my first mmrpg and most certainly my last mmrpg i will ever play very glad for game consoles and other choices of gaming genres'
update bout feb i reached 50 end game with champ did rvr for about a week then cancled the account no way could i begin to level up another toon doing the same thing
before i cancled the account midguard had df on 12 of the 16 servers and rvr was pointlessly outnumbered for the rest of the realms to make rvr fun at that point an time

I bought Everquest, because my friends all played it. But i didn't like it. When Dark Age of Camalot came out, all of my friends bought it, and I held off, based solely on the fact that i hated everquest. When I was my friends playing this game, I was hooked. Compared to everquest, personally, the graphics are better, the game play is better, you can pick to be in three different worlds, and you can ever color your armor! If you like online gameing with a midevil twist, buy this game. Although it is VERY boring when u start out, ance you level up to around 8-10 you can group with other players, combining your skills and abilities to level even faster. If you get bored with that, and after a few more levels, you can go on to fight other players from other worlds. Dang cool, even if you get into grouping with people.

Great Game, however

The game itself is wonderful! A great combination of "real" myth with a fantasy rpg twist. The graphics are some of the best, only rivaled by the ever popular EverQuest. However, as with all online rpgs, you are constantly at war with the developers. I played this game for almost a year before I was fed up with Mythic stinting my Druid. Be forewarned! Check the message boards before committing to pay the monthly charge, only to be fustrated that your character is getting "nerfed" every other month (ie. Major damage done to the Clerics before I quit). Having said that, this is worth every cent for entertainment.

I have been playing Daoc since it was released. I have been playing on the Midgard race. If you are wanting a new game that isnt EQ this is a game to try out.

When you first create a new charactor you will have a long battle to get money and equipment, but once you hit around 27th level you will start seeing your bank account filling up with items and money.

This game was getting very old at first, but in the last couple weeks they have release Epic Zones. In these new zones you are able to hunt in multi party's. If you liked the Planes in EQ this is a great zone for the higher end game.

The game first started out as the high end game was all about taking forts from the other races in the server, but this gets old really fast since being the defending you are on the losing end Now with the new Epic Zones you can traval into a harder zone that has new mobs and new items that you can hunt out.

This game is turning into a great game, just got to give it a little bit of time to figure out what is needed in a Online Game.

Totally Encompassing

I've played many D&D type games in the past and to tell the truth became bored with them as they were all more or less the same. Then a friend turned me on to this game. I watched him for a while and thought, "what the heck, its at least worth the price".
The mail attraction is the interaction between players when forming groups. You can have a lot of fun with this and sometimes its downright entertaining by itself. There are think tasks (quests) rather than find the baddie and slay him as well as other inovations.
The idea that you cannot harm or be harmed by another player in your own realm is good as well. Only when you want to venture out to the frontier to actually do battle against other players from other realms and perhaps lay siege to a castle and try (its not easy) to steal their relics do you find yourself facing other players.
Many of the monsters are smart as well and they can be quite crafty when attacking a group. Players have to devise stratagies to over come rather than slash and slay.
A great game...I'll be playing for years to come!

Fun!

Many people say that it is boring because you have short quests and then what? But thats what MMORPGs are about. It is fun because there are so many people who can help you. If the armor or weapon you want to buy is extremely expensive that doesnt matter you can just ask a friend for some money. It gets a little repetetive after a while but you can have more than one character so if you get bored of one, play another then switch back after you have played them for awhile. Some of the classes and races are based on actual mythology which is interesting. There are 3 different realms which all have the same main idea but they are all in warfare where you fight the members of other realms for keeps and forts. The game isnt just about the battling, it is fun also because there are so many other people online with you. You would really have trouble playing the whole game without anyone helping you, thats why its different.

Visually astonishing and super addictive!

Dark Age of Camelot is a game for people who are dedicated to a single game, because in this game you have to be patient! Getting to level 50 and becoming more powerful than a locomotive does not happen in 2 days! BUT! This is not something that should stop you from buying it because it's the best MMORPG I have ever played. It takes almost 30-40 minutes to get from one side of a realm to another and has huge monsters and dungeons in your way! Look out Everquest, theres a new game in town!

Has good potential

I am not a hardcore player- I only have lv21 and lv19 characters after a month of play. I like the game much better than AC. It is very condusive of a social atmosphere, and the realm vs realm aspect does promote community. Also the guild structure is very nice. The developers are in contact with the player base much more than any other MMORPG I've seen. Realize that the game is still unfinished- a lot of class abilities have not been implemented and the abilities that are in game are still being tweaked. If you are looking for a solo experience you will not like this game. You will get ganked on the frontier, but its not a big deal. Anyway, I like the game and I like the commitment the developer is showing towards it.

This Game is Great!

I have played EQ the majority of my life and this game is far better. Alot of people are giving this game bad reviews because they are upset everyone is leaving everquest. this game beats everquest in gameplay, graphics, lasting appeal, and most importantly lag. This game is alot more fun than everquest and people who say it isnt wont be able to give you an answer besides it is the "same" as everquest. if it is the "same" as everquest, why give it a one star rating?
