Dark Age of Nerfs Alot

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 8

This game was released before the developers even finished. The classes are not balanced, Mythic keeps nerfing the classes based on their mistakes and on the whinning of dissatisfied players. Now they are introducing an expansion pack. Sheesh... They don't even have the basic game fixed yet. It is a good game but would have the potential to be a fantastic game if they would fix the classes.

Excellent Game, Probably the first real "Everquest killer"

First off let me make it clear that I am writing based on commercial experience and not beta experience. As for the launch, it was one of the best in recent PC game history, with only a few minor hiccups despite some insane server traffic. Also most of the few minor bugs that did exist on launch have since been squashed, and already only 2 weeks after launch new content is being added.

As for the gameplay itself, it is very good in Player vs. Monster. The 'camping' syndrome of EQ is eliminated as most special items are not tied to killing one slow spawning creature, and the fact that player-made items usually excede teh quality of dropped items. My character is not yet high enough to take part in Player vs Player combat but those who are have told me it is thrill unmatched in any other Multiplayer RPG. Secondly in a major departure from other rpgs. It is possible to easily level up even into the higher levels on your own. All the classes are built so that they can level without necessarily having to go find a group. While being in a group IS part of the fun and can make leveling much faster. I appreciate Mystic's(developer) acknowledgement that sometimes I may just want to go out on my own and play for a little while. Also as far as I can tell the classes are very well balanced.

Also on that tangent quests and mini-quests(tasks) not only give items but often experience and/or cash. These supplemental experience sources are an excellent way to relax from killing monsters, become better acquainted with the game world, and get nice items.

The graphics in the game are very good considering bandwidth and the level of detail, and the details in the game are remarkable.

One word of warning, the processing of this game world is not for the weak of processor or RAM. I highly recomend that your machine meet or beat the "recommended" specs rather than the minimum specs.

All in all, an excellent game from what Ive seen so far, and I highly anticipate the continuing improvement Mythic is putting into this title.

Excellent Game... If you have the time!

This is the first MMRPG that I've ever played, so I am not going to make the standard "this is ripped from EQ, AC, AO" ad nauseum. I'm a big fan of Arthurian legends, and a big gamer, so I thought that I'd give this game a try. I have not been disappointed with what I've seen thus far.

First off, MMOGs like WWII Online turned me off to the genre, but DAOC has renewed my faith. WWIIOL's graphics were laughable at best. The graphics in DAOC are not bad. They're not the most amazing I've ever seen, but they serve the purpose of the game very well. Some of the effects are even decently impressive. The bottom line on this issue is I think the dev team decided to not overly wow us with the graphics, but with the gameplay.

Secondly, the game allows both for solo combat and for grouping. I've done both with great ease. In grouping, be wary though, good groups can be hard to come by. Get a group with good chemistry, however, and you can level your character like mad! In about 6 hours of playing have taken a Paladin from start to Lvl 9 in good groups.

System-wise I have an Athlon 550, 256MB RAM, and Geforce 256 Vid card, and the game works fine for me. There are parts when it is choppy, like in heavily populated areas (Camelot city), but other than that it runs very smoothly.

I've heard complaints about the experience loss system, complaining about purchasing back constitution, etc. This can be somewhat of a pain, but it is possible to gain half of the experience lost by praying at the point where you died. The upside is that you don't drop any of your items when you die, so your character cannot be looted.

The major downside I see to this game is the fact that it is very time consuming. This is not a complaint, however. It should be time consuming to fully develop a character in a RPG. Also, leveling your character can be much easier if you know the right spots to hunt for your level, or group well. This is a caution though, if you don't have much time to play games, you won't get very far in this one.

Overall, I have extremely enjoyed the game. There are elements I would like to see added, and I have been assured they are working on them. Give it a shot!

The Fighting Kicks!

First off the fighting in AC and EQ sucked hard. This game comes back with a fighting style that is comparable to Tekken and with new expansions it may become as good or better (as far as attack selection goes). I played EQ for a few months and then started beta testing for this game and cancelled my EQ account. I had been thinking about doing that for a while, because, frankly, my idea of fun is not kill something, sit down for two min. and then kill something else (caster) or run around in a group pressing 1 then 2 and 3 and asking for heals (melee). Even the hybrids were boring because they were worse than even the tanks, and played almost no role (it ussually took me close to 2 hours to find a group at lvl 48). Also, in Eq, a series of spells were laid out and you casted the first, the second and so on until the thing was dead. In DAOC it is much the same as far as casters go, but as a fighter you actually have to make quick choices (I wondered when the mmorpgs were gonna figure that out) as far as stamina goes and what styles to use. Also, the fighters and casters are pretty evenly balanced, unlike in Eq where you had to group at lvl 9 or you would be killed (that is only if you wanted to lvl a little faster than once every 3 weeks). All and all, this game not only blows EQ out of the water, but vaporizes all remaining traces of it.

Best game I've played this year

Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) is the first MMORPG that I have played since Ultima Online many years ago. These graphics are astounding compared to the old UO. I think it is very fun to get into groups and just have a little chitchat while killing some bandits or fire ants. All the different character types are useful in a group. You need someone who can resurrect people who die, someone with a ranged attack that can draw monsters out of a group, etc. And it is most enjoyable to know that I am talking to actual people who have their own personality and opinions.
Now to counterpoint the gamer from C'Ville Illinois, whose review was upsetting. One piece of advice, RTFM! The manual will tell you how to walk (the ] key). If you want to have serious social chats, go to a chat room. DAoC is a game with less emphasis on social mixers. The sound..ok the sound is not the best, but the monster sounds are varied. And you do NOT have to provide credit card info the first month, if you read the box that pops up it says you can cancel and will receive periodic reminders. Another person complained about holding down the up arrow for ten minutes. There are 2 solutions there-- 1) rent a horse or 2) press the numlock key to turn on autorun (also in the manual).
This game has held my attention for a while now; when I try to play other games, I keep going back to DAoC.

Despite its flaws

this is a very good game. Many other people have pointed out the good things about DAoC in other reviews, so I will leave that part alone. One of the bigger flaws in this game is you are very limited in how you can train your charachter and remain effective. Leveling is also very tedius as you progress because there is not a great varity of monsters to hunt in this game. Mythic also tends to over do game changes to the extreme when adjustments are made.

The return of Arthur heralds the death of Everquest

Boy, this game has been a long time coming. Having played on the beta for DAoC and having played Everquest for the past 2 years, I must say that Mythic has a winner here. Having improved upon everything that Verant had worked so hard for but just let fall apart, DAoC brings a breath of fresh air to all of us fans of Online RPGs. With new and inventive ideas, a familiar console(at least for those who played EQ), and a helpful and caring staff, DAoC fares to rival Everquest as the biggest and most played Online RPG ever. Good luck Mythic, and for all you hardcore EQ players out there, give this game a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Everything I was looking for... minus the comfortable chair

Wow! Where to begin? This game has some great features that I have looked for since playing the other major RPGs over the years. Armor takes a beating and needs repair after some time, as do weapons... There are rogue-type characters who can use poisons... The spells are very eye-catching... The quality of the quests and tasks is admirable... The different avenues of character growth are tremendous... The user interface takes a few minutes to adjust to, but is very appealing afterwards... The many types of weapons and armor you can choose from is another way to define your character also.

I like the game so much, I am cancelling my other online RPG accounts, buying a more comfortable chair, putting a small fridge upstairs, and changing jobs so I'll have more time to play... ok ok, maybe everything but that last part! I can just get up earlier to get some playing time in! :)

Thanks, Mythic!

Best and Most addictive PC game I've played

I've played DAOC for about 5 months now, and the biggest problem I have is finding time to be with my family. I tried playing on the "Dred" servers in the Player V. Player mode, however, I more interested in working with people for a common goal rather than basically a shoot-em-up game.

Though I've only reached lvl 25 out of 50, (working about 8 different chars up through the ranks), I have loved almost every minute of it. I can craft my own armor and bows/weapons, or I can sell them to other players.

I've also made many long-term friends on-line at DAOC. It's a lot of work, and can get boring at times (try crafting up to 1100 skillpoints, I'm only about halfway there), but I think suffering the boredom is a minor problem when you have one of your realm/guildmates congratulating you on making lvl 50, or becoming a grandmaster armorer.

Just my .02c
