Conspiracies Abound-Beware!

...Acclaim has thrown out a virtual plethora of hack-brained marketing schemes for this newest release, the most interesting one being a $10,000 Award for naming your baby after the gun toting Native American. This is when my "Spidey Sense" started tingling; most blockbuster games rely on less dubious and gimmick-ey methods to get their games into the hands of eager gamers, but I see an awful lot of ultra-hyped titles turning out to be mediocre these days and Turok: Evolution is no exception. For some reason, the gaming community has been hesitant to release an official review for said game, so I'm putting out this warning--Beware!! Although the first Turok game released on N64 was excellent, this most recent incarnation has followed the subsequent trend of all Turok Games, falling into the pits of mediocrity. Fans of the FPS genre will enjoy, but Acclaim's throughly lackluster attempt to revive the Turok franchise will fail to win new devotees with this masterpiece of gimmmickry.

Don't buy this game, maybe a rental ...

Turok isn't that great of game. Based on a five star scale (halo) then Turok is a two. Mainly for some interesting graphics. However, the enemy aren't that smart considering after one shot they surrender. The killing a raptor is like killing a rat in Morrowwind... not very fun for a first person shooter.
After a few hours of play, the game was ready to go back to the retailer.
Also, the multiplayer action is okay, but by No Link play is No fun.
Rent before you regret your buy.

I was excited about this game, but I'm glad rented before buying. I think the graphics are great and the dinos are cool, but it's a terribly frustrating game!!! I found the jumping and puzzles annoying. The weapons are GREAT (use the TAXAS and MADMAN cheats). The flying could've been very fun except for the fact that it gets old watching yourself go splat on the wall. I only played the multiplayer a couple times - it's not HALO but it's fun to throw nukes. As a rental, I give it a 5.

Do not buy this game. Even though it is only 5 bucks on Amazon, and probably cheaper elsewhere the shipping wait is not worth it as you will put it down in the first hour or so. When i got it it was lame when all you do is shoot tiny little dinosaurs that could easily be stepped on. All the weopans suck and the only one i wanted was the nuke that you only get once(if you dont use it, it doesn't carry on to the next level) I wanted to see the end of the game but i despised it too much to bother playing it so i used cheat codes, the end almost sucks as much as the game. Multiplayer blows and the controls are retarded.
Save yourself the frustration of looking at it next to your xbox

Turok Evolution isn't a bad game per se, it just isn't particularly exceptional. While the game would have been impressive a few years ago, it's not state-of-the-art by today's standards. The extent of the game and variety of levels is nice, but there are several flaws that make the gaming experience frustrating. Defects include clipping issues, resolution, a lack of detailed bump mapping, a sluggish feel to the controls, and memory -- used objects and fallen enemies in the game simply disappear. The hard drive is completely ignored, and load times suffer for it. Check points are not present which causes the game to commit the unforgivable sin of making the player redo entire scenes over and over before attempting to defeat a part that's particularly difficult.

The problem here is that no one seems to be taking advantage of the Xbox's superior capabilities. Most of the big releases this year have been ports from the PC, Cube, and PSII. This means that most games being released are the "lowest common denominator" of the three. After all, why would they bother rewriting their graphics engine just because one platform could do a lot more than the others?

The game companies need to learn that the future of gaming requires a lot more than the PSII can deliver. Companies like Bungee are already miles ahead of the pack. Their graphics engines are the most advanced in the industry. Xbox players would do well to steer away from PSII seconds such as Turok and hold out for Xbox exclusives. If you have a PC, Cube, or PSII then buy Turok. You'll probably like it. If you have an Xbox, then take a pass on it. You can do better.

Just pre-ordered -- AAA FPS

Just put my preorder in. Judging from what I've read on IGN, Gamespot, Game Informer, etc. I have to say this has the potential to be the FPS of the year. It's also a BIG game according to the previews, so I'm looking forward to getting some quality time in with the over the top turok arsenal.

Turok rocks!

OK, I am a game bigot. I only play First Person Shooters. So, my Xbox pickings have been a little slim. I pre-ordered this game in May and have been counting the days until it arrived. It showed up on Friday, and I played it for about 2 hours over the weekend. I can only say that I was not disappointed. The graphics are as amazing as they should be for an Xbox game, and the controls are very fluid. The story line (like I need one) is not very engaging, but it also doesn't get in the way. I like the addition of flight in this rendition of Turok. The flight controls are easy to master and the weapons are sweet. Imagine dogfights 100 million years ago! Cool!

The enemies that I have met so far (I've only made it through chapter 3) have demonstrated intelligence. It's weird to watch a computer controlled Sleg dive for cover and only expose enough of his body to try and get a shot at me. They're smart. The AI is great.

I highly recommned this game, if you like FPS and a visually interesting challenge. 5 Stars!

Does it compare to HALO to be as good as I think it does?

I recently got the game and was slightly disappointed. I am also a big fan of this line up since it's debut on the N64. I must say it seems to play with the almost exact same feel as its predecessors. Not that it's a bad thing, but when you put it up against HALO, it's just doesn't feel as REFINED as it should be.

What I'm referring to are the environment details such as the ground vegetation looking rather pixelated when they are viewed closely and the noticeable generic background patterns of vegetation that outlined the maps which simple look flat. Even the lakes, creeks and riverbeds look flat. And what's even more surprising was that I was playing the game on a Samsung 32" HDTV and was expected to be blown away by it's lush environments previewed on some early sample videos on xbox sites. I was disappointed. I think the high definition only enhanced the pixelation. I won't give in to those 2"x3" videos anymore. It's not a bad thing though. I have to admit that I'm only in the early stages of the game and I hope things improve dramatically with more intense fighting and bigger weapons and aerial combat ... if I get that far before I get bored ... which is what happened in the N64 versions.

The AI is pretty nifty and I love how some dinosaurs interact with the environment when they knocked over trees and the sort. That was surprising. The enemies do have very nice details when they're viewed closely and look even better when a body part is severed with blood spewing out of their new orafice.

Well, like I said ... I'm still in the early stages and I hope it improves as I progress. For right now, it deserves it 3 out of 5 stars.

Oh so much wasted hope. . .

...Just bought the game tonight and I already hate it. Where to begin? The awkward controls (jumping is a hassle)? The crowded, overdrawn-on jungles (lush environments, my eye - you can't see 2 ft ahead of you)? How about the much hailed enemy AI? They're smart enough to miss you with every shot and not respond when you're mere inches away.
All this awesomeness in the very first level.
And don't get me started on the flying levels! Alright, maybe just a little. It's almost as if you have precious little control over the behemoth in the sky, and targeting enemies is damn near impossible.
Que terrible!
Please oh please for the love of all that is holy keep your money for a better game. Or better still get the original for the 64. This version just plains eats it.
