Has Me Hooked!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 11 / 11

Maybe I'm behind the times and this is a pale imitation of Doom and Quake and other first-person shooters, but I absolutely love this game and have been playing it for many hours ever since I bought it a few weeks back. The storyline has you facing off with evil Nazis and their experiments with the occult--zombies, super soldiers, etc., etc. Along the way, you get to infiltrate the catacombs under an African desert, break your way out of Castle Wolfenstein and escape via a cable car (right out of Where Eagles Dare), and break into a top secret testing facility, where you must stop a V2 rocket launch, destroy a radar prototype, and steal an experimental jet aircraft. I've played Halo and Splinter Cell, but Castle Wolfenstein keeps me coming back in a way neither of those games has. The graphics are great and the sound effects are well-realized, and the array of weaponry and tactics you must utilize to defeat your enemies is phenomenal. I would highly recommend this game to any Xbox owner.

Good singleplayer, Great Multiplayer

Ok, lets start out with the game details. This game alows co-op playing with a friend, which really ads some reply value to it. The graphics are smooth and well done, but the details such as bulletholes in walls are not there. Blood and gore is realistic and not overdone. The sound is great, u can hear distant firing, the yelling of cpu bots, and explosions throughout the game. Aiming and controls are quite simple, you dont have to be an expert gamer to play it.

Single Player: The single player of Return to Castle Wolfenstein was very well done. The missions take place in several settings which allow multiple ways to complete each mission. The storyline is great and involves several twists. The cpu bots range from German soldiers to "creatures" that erupt from fires and spit flames at you. Some of this game is actually scary at times (i once got chopped in half by some spinning discs and dropped the controller) because a lot of the levels are dark or in crypts. There are many weapons to choose from, and weapons can be picked up from fallen enemies. Sometimes the single player can be tiring however because you may have to start from a saved game with low health and have to take on 5 creatures. I give the single player a 4/5

Multiplayer: Note- Xbox live is required to play Multiplayer. The multiplayer of RTCW is very unique from most other games. There are several Characters to choose from that are each equipped with different weapons. Teamwork is a key element of RTCW multiplayer. There are such gametypes as checkpoint, elimination, objective and stopwatch. The maps range from small to large and include several settings. Voice communication is available so you can talk to teammates during the game. Lag will only occur depending on the speed of the players internet connection. I give multiplayer 5/5
Overall i give this game 9/10

COOPERATIVE IS A LOT OF FUN

THIS GAME IS A LOT OF FUN WHEN PLAYING COOPERATIVE...
ITS LONGER AND HAS A BETTER STORYLINE, IF YOURE TIRED OF PLAYING HALO...
THERE ARE SOME PRETTY LAME KILLS, AND YOU RESPAWN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LEVEL, LEAVING YOUR PARTNER IN SOME HOTSPOTS IF YOU DIE, BUT OVERALL, AS IT SAYS ON THE COVER, IT IS A DEFINITIVE MULTIPLAYER EXPERIENCE...
HOPE THIS HELPS...

Better than the PC game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 8

WOW! I just bought the XBOX version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and it actually surpasses the PC version in several ways.

(1) The graphics are amazing! The PC graphics are very good, but a little flat in certain situations. The graphics on XBOX are incredibly detailed -- textures, lighting and depth are taken to new levels -- and don't ask me how they made the sky look so incredibly amazing.

(2) Sound. Dolby Digital 5.1. Enough said!

(3) Wolfenstein integrates XBOX Live better than any game I've seen so far. If you own Ghost Recon (and have Live) you know how frustrating it is to get online and find your buddies. Wolfenstein makes it so easy. They've also added a feature that identifies good servers from bad ones. Instead of using the ping, as the PC version does, Wolfenstein on XBOX uses a green light, yellow light and red light approach.

If you've ever played the PC version of Wolfenstein online, you know how cumbersome those voice commands can be sometimes (v-4-2-1 instead of saying "Hey, I need a medic!"). With XBOX Live you can actually talk to your teamates and strategize. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE IMPROVEMENT OVER THE PC VERSION!

(4) Game play is very solid. Getting used to the controls takes some time but if you own Ghost Recon or Splinter Cell it shouldn't take you more than a game or two to adjust. There are some inevitable drawbacks too. Since there is no keyboard, giving out ammo, medic packs or switching weapons requires a bit more time. You have to scroll backwards and forwards by using the A and B buttons. Also, in the PC version you can turn around much faster than on XBOX, although I think the XBOX model might be better because it's more realistic.

If you love war games or first-person shooters, you HAVE TO GET THIS GAME!! Wolfenstein on XBOX is now the premier XBOX/XBOX Live game -- until Halo 2 comes out ;-)

Overall a five star game.

Hi,
This is a great game for sure. I an newbie to XBOX and this was one of my first games. And no story line!!. I think there is a really nice story line. May not be a very many lot of cut scenes but it serves the point. The weapons are awesome. Venom Gun, I wont mind having that (and also Energy Sword from Halo) at home. AI is really good. Voice could be better, but come one thisis World War II. I specially liked the voice in one level saying "Intruder Intruder Alarm Alarm"

Rather than comparing with Halo better play both. Both have there own fun. I guess energy sword was cool too. Seems like Heinrich had one.

I am in for Round2 for this game. This time finding all the secrets is the mission :)

The only cons about this game was many a times soilders looked identical(faces). Sometime when two elite guards were one after aother they looked like TWINS. ;)
I guess we donot mind that for aliens(HALO).

In short both games are great and 5 stars and play both.

Superb First Person Shoot'em-up

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is an overall superb game. It far superior to any other XBOX First-Person Shooter except HALO, and it is definitely a close match for that hallmark of video games. It starts off a little slow with some levels that still managed to instill a sense of clausterphobia. However, as the game progresses the game-play improves dramatically and the enemies become that much more fun to blast. One minute you might be engaged in a tough fire fight with crack Nazi troopers, and the next you might be fighting for you life against a powerful cyborg or horde of undead monsters.....too cool. Even with the horror/sci-fi element this game seems to be much more realistic in control and environment than Medal of Honor. You better be careful with Ol' BJ Blaskowitz because he can't soak up to many mauser rounds before he's out of the fight. I highly recommend this game......just wish it had a few more levels.

still playing this game a LOT - which says something..

In the dynamic world that is video games, we gamers, with our unbelievably short-attention spans, usually burn out on a game within a month or so. For a game to last 2 months after release - to still be *fresh* even (there are still some maps in multiplayer i have yet to play - unreal!), is something this avid gamer has never before experienced. And, I have played this game a LOT - as in 5 or 6 times a week, sometimes for multiple hours - and still I yearn for more multiplayer mayhem. RTCW is the greatest multiplayer shooter for consoles period. This is the first game I've ever played where I can actually *see* in the game who is talking - oh yeah, that's the other killer app with this game, the native voice support - which truly does make this game 'the definitive xbox live experience' - as the box states. Those of you, who like me had this game already and played it out on the PC, will gladly give up the Keyboard/mouse/PC/h4ck3r world for an even playing field - with truly amazing integrated communication. A+ A worthwhile purchase for the multiplayer game alone.

This is a game worth playing and since it's been out about 2 years or a little longer it's affordable. I'm a fan of the original Wolfenstein 3D and this game is still worthy of the name. Great game play, sound, weapons and decent graphics. Another plus about this is when you beat the game you can play the original Wolfenstein 3D game, this is definally worth buying. Once you get used to the controls and how the game is played out you'll get hooked.

We play this one non-stop!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War takes the classic first person shooter and brings it live on the XBox. Check out the great gameplay!

Just about every action gamer knows the basic story by now. This game is a classic and has had several ressurections. It's World War 2, and the Nazis are trying to gain supernatural powers. The Allies are trying to figure out what is going on and to stop the Nazis.

In this XBox iteration, you learn that back in medieval days, a sorcerer managed to lock away a nasty, immortal warrior. This is who the Nazis have uncovered. You begin the single-player game as an Allied soldier in Africa, being sent in to figure out what the Nazis are up to. The game is a good mixture of action, stealth, and puzzle solving. If you just go in to a "kidnap" mission with guns blazing, you're likely not to succeed. Instead you have to sneak around and achieve your mission quietly.

The graphics are rather impressive. Candle flames flicker, light reflects off your hand-held knife as you walk through the streets. Lights reflect off of surrounding surfaces. The XBox version also boasts Dolby 5.1 sound, from the various weapons you use to ambient noises and rockets whistling overhead.

While the basic gameplay and new missions are quite fun, where the game *really* shines is in XBox Live gameplay. Head on line for a wide selection of mission types and maps. Choose the Axis or Allied side, pick your speciality and weapons. Then head into combat with your team, coordinating your attack! They even tweaked how some items work in multiplayer (venom, flamethrower) to help balance gameplay.

You can also download new content and check your rankings against other Wolfensteinites, always a fun challenge!

Highly recommended!

Return of the classic...

I got this game 2 days before the release date. I played it before on PC so I didn't really expect anything new. In fact I only bought it for cooperative multiplayer mode (split screen). It was a nice surprise straight out of the box. Not only you get additional levels (beggining only), new weapons but AI is really impressive to. This game really forces you to rethink your strategies. Stealth is really more important than both guns blazing open approach. Yes it's a still good fashioned first person shooter. Yes you still get to fire big guns. You just have to think and rationalize many times if it's worth to shoot the guy or just use stealth to stab him. Now pros and cons of the game.

Lets start with pros:
- multiplayer mode: both for xbox live and cooperative on the single unit. I'm sick and tired of competing against my friends. Usually one who wins is one who has the most amount of hours behind the controller. In cooperative mode both of you can work together and since most likely you sit next to each other calling out moves, shots and pick ups makes it fun.
- extra levels. I knew that some of them will overlap what I had on the pc but extra levels right off the bat was really nice. Levels are well constructed so the flow of the original game was not interrupted.
- weapons. Real performance and realistic sound effects. Firing in small room changes the way that weapon sounds. Reloading is crucial and since you don't really get that much ammo you really have to be careful. New weapon: shotgun. Good ol' American pump action 12 gauge is a perfect cure for them pesty Nazis.
-controls. Straight out of the box, natural for any gamer (very intuitive).
-special items. I mean it's a good thing that they are there but in the end I happened to very rarely use them. But that's maybe I finished this game once (PC) without them so I didn't see where would they fit.
-AI. Enemy is well conditioned, they listen and attack the right way. Yes every now and than one of the soldiers make a dumb move but hey they are grunts, not all that bright.
-Bonus game. After you finish playing the one player game you will get a full original Wolf 3D. How cool is that?

And cons:
-Graphics. Don't get me wrong they are good but not as good and clear as halo or pc version of Wolf. I guess since environment is so intense some of the details had to be sacrificed.
-Automatic load function. Lets say you run out of ammo and than pick up some. Last weapon you used will be loaded. But if you picked up just 4 or 5 rounds and your last weapon was a machine gun it doesn't do me any good. I will not really hit much due to poor rifle accuracy. I would have much rather have the pistol loaded.
-Difficulty level. Sometimes it feels like that just by running around you get stuff done. I mean setting a higher difficulty level will generate more enemies and will make it hard to kill them but the basic idea to find and pull the switch is the same.
-Super natural element. Aliens, zombies and robots really have no place in WWII based game. That's just my opinion. But on the positive note it adds variety.
-weapon scrolling. With full arsenal it's a pain to get to your favorite weapon.
-no saves in cooperative split screen mode!! That's just plainly wrong. Of course once you finish the game in single player mode you have access to all the levels anyway.

In the end it's a good game. Maybe not as good as Halo, little different than Medal of Honor but quite fun. Multiplayer for Xbox life is excellent gives this game a high play value. I can see my self already replaying certain missions over and over again. I think I played the Airfield assault like 10 times. It's just pure fun.
