Beware Ye of Little Patience

This was one of the first games that I bought when I got my Xbox. Everything about the game itself is pretty impressive; from the graphics, to the cars, to the ability to put your own soundtrack in the game (at first I thought this feature was a bit over-rated until I actually did it...very cool indeed). But, if you are the type of person who salivates over cheat codes and wishes that you could play every game in "God-mode" this is not for you. I have played this game pretty steadily for the past month and with the exception of Madden, it is the only one that has me talking to myself. Your frustration level increases are proportionate to the level that you have advanced to in the game. It becomes exceedingly diffucult to stomach losses after you have dedicated twenty minutes to a single race only to lose at the finish line by .012 seconds (it happened).

I read a review of the game that said "The computer cars will always take the cleanest lines which sometimes leads to collisions in turns." Upon reading this, I said, "Game reviewers sometimes hiteth the crack pipes which leads to blatant lies in reviews." The other cars on the track with you are headhunters...plain and simple. Their mission is to screw you out of the race, and you alone. They do not go after each other with such passion but as you progress throughout the game their tactics are unmistakeable. And for some reason the makers of Project Gotham Racing have decided that your car and yours alone will react to your opponents bumps and brushes as if you were Superman and they were Kryptonite cars. Granted, occasionally one of the other cars will spin out or lose control, but not as often as you will.

Even with that notable exception this is a fabulous game that I would highly recommend...if you have the time, and preferrably someone to talk to.

This game kicks rear!

I think this is a great racing game.I was skeptical of getting this game after most of the negative reviews of the game, but one day I gave in and bought it. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!! This game kicks rear! I'm a racing game fan, I own at least 2 racing games for each of my other game consoles, and I must say that is one of the best racing games for any system. The graphics are intense, very realistic. (It's so realistic that I find myself leaning into the turns of the track, and I usually don't do this.) Plus, there is more to do than just race other cars... you have races just for Kudos alone, time trials, and so on.I also like the fact that you listen to actual radio stations while driving, with real DJs'!!! That's pretty wild. Usually in racing games you just get typical boring music, I usually turn the music down on my other games, but they play some rockin' music here! All in all, I must say this game is killer... so it's no Gran Turismo, but then again, if it were like it, you would be complaining that it's just like it...

Detailed beyond belief

Okay, there are dozens of reviews written for this game so I won't add much. It is an incredible game with amazing graphics. I have never played a racing game that I enjoyed before this one.
If you have been to any of the four towns that you can race through and you remember any of the structures slow down and drive down the streets and notice the shops and theatres. They are exactly where the actual structures are in the cities themselves.
I just wanted to add this as another one of the incredible details included in this game.

A great title, but takes time to master

One of the greatest difficulties in creating video games is making them challenging but not impossible. This game treads the line between "extremely hard" and "impossible". This isn't one of those games you can rent at blockbuster and figure out if you like it or not. you have to work hard to master the basics. This makes PGR unattractive to younger (under 13 or so) gamers. It takes a true racing game master to beat this one. (Addmittedly, after five hours timed in races and about 20 hours total, I am about a fifth of the way through the game and at a standstill).

The game engine is awesome and very realistic. The courses provide ample curves, but very few shortcuts, so newer gamers can't cheat wins. (I know of only 1 shortcut in the game, so far)

The only problem with this game is that the learning curve makes multiplayer mode nearly worthless. I played against two friends, one of whom had played a little and the other of whom had never played. I lapped them both on a 2 lap course using a mediocre car against their Ferrari F50s (the best car in the game).

Despite this, I think the game deserves 5 stars. How often do you play multiplayer anyways?

Impossibly difficult ! But otherwise perfect

Graphics: PGR has brilliant graphics, really makes your friends drool as you run the demo or race through each one of the four city's

Sound: The sound is very good, perfectly recognisible engine sounds and highly realistic tire shreeches and with three radiostations to choose from in each city, you won't get bored of the ingame music too

Gameplay: This is the weakest part of PGR: it soon becomes ipossibly difficult to win races. The AI of your opponents is unfair, even when driving an equal type of car, the cpu player's cars have higher top speeds. They also try to crash you, rather than battle you in a fair way to the finishline.

In short: PGR exploids the xboxes potential, but it soon becomes impossibly difficult! Otherwise a perfect game

Not playtested

This game is an excellent demo of the power and capabilities of the X-Box, and really shows off the power of this console. Unfortunately, as a game, Project Gotham Racing suffers from a difficulty factor that does not progress logically. You will need to use the cheat code to see the exotic cars, because after mid-way, the game gets far too hard and cars that would help you pass the higher levels do not unlock in a logical order. There really is no excuse for a game being this difficult at the higher levels, and I seem to recall Microsoft PC games suffering from this same oversight. The game is excellent in all other ways, but this is such a huge problem that it renders the game unenjoyable, unless you use the cheat code. I personally don't see the point, and it turns what would otherwise be a 5 star review into a 2 star review. I don't recommend this game. Rent it, but don't buy it.

This one's not for everyone. That being said, neither is the Tekken or Gran Turismo series. Both are games that require some heavy duty dedication to really find the beauty of their
respective play mechanics, and Gotham is no different. It's a tough game that demands perfection more often than not, and to beat some particular races you'll be restarting the entire race the moment you've made an error. But if you're meticulous enough to enjoy getting into the meat of a deep title like this one, you'll find that the designers have really tried to create a new driving experience, and for the most part, succeeded in doing just that.

I love the fact that Project Gotham Racing is so tough. Not only will the AI drivers bump and cheat their way to victory in the street races, but the courses themselves --especially the cone lined kudos races-- are extremely unforgiving. You will drive the courses correctly at the greatest speed possible or you will not advance at all. With only a couple dozen cars available it seems Bizarre Creations had no choice but to make PGR super tough. There are only so many goodies they can reward you with. But, the graphics, number of cars and awesome music ripping system are all just great accessories to the main thrust of the game: some tough [rear] lifelike racing.

A soundtrack full of your own music and a beautiful racing game coming together is the greatest combination since chocolate met peanut butter. No more complaining about lame videogame music or anything like that. Just the idea of being able to have different soundtracks for when you're driving in the different cities seems like such an obvious feature to have in a racing game now.

Xbox has promised us a level of detail that we haven't seen before and from the street signs in individual cities to drivers who actually steer and react to vehicle motions, Project Gotham delivers. It's not GT3 but PGR is a damn good first effort and should satisfy your early Xbox racing jones.

The best racing game

Yes, this game is hard to play at first. What this game does like other games is make you develop different skills other than steer, floor it, and brake. At first I didn't like that, but after actually spending a couple of hours learning tricks, it became more fun. I like the fact on how hard the game can be. Makes it always challenging.
The graphics are great, the music is really good (surprised me), and the multiplayer is really kick ....
This game is the must have if you enjoy racing games. I have this and Rallisport and I play this waaaaay more.

cool graphics but GAMEPLAY [is bad] ... period!

Im being honest here, i dont understand how this game got good reviews here ... I didnt like this game as much as I thought I would.

The value of the Cons outweigh the value of the Pros tremendously.

The Pros that were enjoyable were the awesome graphics, the system of advancement is mature and the ability to race with your own music.

The problem is the major cons. While there are stylish things in the game, the GAMEPLAY (TOTALLY) [is bad]. It feels like I'm driving a turtle, The cars dont go fast at all. I thought something must be wrong as I couldnt believe how slow the cars go at top speed. It's so slow it's almost silly.

and I agree about the controlling the cars as some others said, its a nuisance. I mean it shouldnt be so ridiculous. I just want to race, go fast and have fun. If you played Splashdown (awesome gameplay) you will know what I mean.

The cars don't race smoothly and it isnt practical for a game. For example, you cant turn with even medium speed. You have to let go of the gas way ahead and brake completely (almost coming to a full stop) when turning.

The bottom line is that yes there are cool things about the game but nothing is more important than the gameplay and it totally [bad]. As a note, I rented this game and i certainly wouldn't buy it.

If you want to know what i mean by awesome gameplay for racing see "Splashdown". The engineers did an awesome job, somehow they've combined difficulty with fun and awesome speed. I completed the career and have played it so many times and I can play it all day because the racing itself is just pure fun. That's how a race game should be unlike Project Gotham.

I would've gave the game a 1 but I gave it a 2 only for cool graphics, and music support.
