Ah, speed and drifting....how I long for more asphalt......

Project Gotham Racing (PGR), was the first racing game for me on my XBOX. The graphics were superb of course and it got me quite addicted for a while. The Kudos scoring system was somewhat interesting while based on moves such as powerslides/drifting, two wheelers, and air, which live the phrase "Speed alone will not win". And the soundtrack for PGR kept my driving mood positive the entire time. Overall, I think this game is great, however it no perfect one this time.

I've dropped this score to 4 stars for a couple reasons. First off the lack of courses/tracks, actually I expected more variety rather just from 4 places; San Francisco, New York, London, and Tokyo. So it felt that I was replaying the places over and over. And then what ticked me off the most, was the way you obtained the newer cars. I expected maybe a quick race mode would let me choose any car, but it seems that if you don't complete certian levels, you wont get that many cars. And as always, some levels are hard, which then you get stuck for the rest of the time.

Overall, its a nice game, if only they would have all availible cars in a free race mode, and a few more track, then that 5 star would speed to it.

Great Gameplay and Addictive...

I am not a big fan of racers. I liked Grand Turismo 3 on PS2 but was not overly impressed... if you are looking for a game that gets your attention quickly and everyone can play without having to know what kind of tires your car needs, this is a great game. So many cars to choose from, beautiful graphics (MUCH BETTER THAN GT3 on PS2) and some awesome tracks. I especially love driving the boxter trough san francisco!

I can only say..... Wow!

I bought this for my son for Christmas. He was going to bypass the awesome intro, and I had to stop him. With the Dolby surround on, the screen just comes to life. I have bought him several games over the years, 3DO, Phillips CDI, N64 (2-3 years ago we couldn't get enough of San Francisco Rush), but this is by far the best one. Of course, I would have been P.O.'d if I hadn't found the cheat code on the internet. Driving the F50 is a blast. You shouldn't have to work for who knows how long to get it... The scenery is so awesome, I like to put it in free roam mode and just cruise around looking at the sights. I would highly recommend it if you enjoy racing games. Cheat code is Nosliw for your user name..

Great driving fun!

I've played racing games since the beginning of console gaming. From Pole Position to Need for Speed, to now (cheerfully) Project Gotham Racing.

I don't know how it looks on other people's screens, but on my 43" HDTV system, this game is so addictive. Beautiful, fast-paced, challenging, and stylish are just a few of the positive adjectives I can come up with for this game. I've been getting to work late because I'm up at night trying to get the gold medal. Indeed, sometimes the races are so difficult it's frustrating, but that just makes victories more gratifying.

I recommend this game to anyone who has the slightest interest in racing games. This might not be as deep in terms of car options as GT3 or as realistic as Nascar Racing but for all out fun, this is the best racer. You won't regret it.

All I can say is....WOW

I am not a big fan of racing games. I bought this game because...To be honest, Im not sure why I got this game. It just looked good. And I was hoping I wouldnt regret it. And let me tell you, I havent played ANY Xbox game more than I have played this one.

The graphics in the game are amazing. I found the backgrounds to be a bit disappointing, but you spend so much time blazing through the streets that it wont seem too important. The kudos system is unique and very effective. And best (or worst) of all, this game is addictive. I have spent many a night trying to finish "just one more" race.

But this game isnt for everyone. If you have a low attention span, you SURELY do not want this game. This game is HARD. VERY hard. At times the fun i have with the game almost borders frustration. If you think you are a racing pro, try this. But then again, this isnt real racing. This is more of racing in the streets, so speeds arent THAT high. This game takes a lot of skill. And that is probably the only thing that made me not give it 5 stars. Im a reasonably patient guy and its almost had me pulling out my hair at times. Losing right at the end of the race because an AI controlled car hit you is AWFULLY frustrating. But then again, its fun to get back at them in the next race ;)

Go get Rallisport Challenge

PGR is second rate compared to Rallisport. Rallisport is more fun, better graphics, better sound, better controls.

PGR does have cooler cars thought because most of them are consumer cars as opposed to just Rally cars, which most people have never heard of. The background in PGR are very boring and stagnant, hurried to get done before release date.

My Favorite XBox Game So Far

I absolutely love this game. Graphics need to be seen to be believed! This was one of the three games that I first purchased with the system (the day it came out on 11/15/01) and it is the only one that I still play. I have finished the game completely, but I am still addicted.

My favorite aspect of the game is how you are scored on your driving by amassing Kudos. A cerntain level of mastery of control needs to be used in order to gain the kudos (style points) needed to progress through the game. I particularly love this feature of the game -- you don't just drive, you have to learn how to drive with style (i.e., control your slides around a turn, come off of a hill just right, and still maintian a top speed). There is a tremendous amount of skill and strategy that needs to be employed in the later rounds of the game, which can be frustrating, but adds to the longevity of the game.

Another thing that I love about this game is the type of racing that you do. There is the typical road race scenario, but there are also challenges of different sorts (how many cars can you pass in a minute and a half, how many kudos can you build up over two laps, how many laps can you do in three minutes, etc., etc.) This is another feature that adds to the longevitiy of the game.

The only negative thing that I feel is in the game is the fact that on road races it is INCREDIBLY challlenging to catch up to the leader once you fall behind. It can be done, but the computer drives the courses near-flawlessly, and some aggressive, well timed, and lucky driving needs to come into play if you need to catch up. There was a time when I thought that it was downright impossible to do so, but I have done it -- albeit only a few times. The upside to this flaw is that the races aren't overly long (until the end of the game), and you can restart a race as many times as you want without penalty.

I recommend this game if you are looking for a challenging, visually beautiful, and just over-all FUN game.

"Project Gotham" fun!

Project Gotham Racing is really fun and exciting. My favorite part is the Kudos Challenge. I love the street races and I get better and better at them each day. The arcade races are cool too. You need a pretty dang good car to get threw the green cones. I bought Gotham from Best Buy. It was only $20! So I said to my self hmm........ I gonna buy this. The first thing the cashier said was "this is a cool game. I was happy :).
When I brought it home, it was like 9:00. I played it right away for like an hour. I went to bed. The next day I played it again. And I have never stopped since.

Great game, not as good as the second though. (Obviousely)

No doubt that Project Gotham Racing is an extremely fun game, but it is just not as good as the second one. I will make this review in PRO/CON format. It is basically your average racing game with the addition of Kudos, which are basically points that you get for cutting sharp turns.

PRO:
1.Graphics are over average
2.Audio (If you like rap)
3.The idea of Kudos is pretty neat.

CON:
1.Not as many cars as PGR 2
2.Not as many maps as PGR 2
3.Not very realistic
4.Not online
5.Can get frustrating at times

This game definetely gets a 5/5 in terms of how fun it is, but there is just way less features in this one then there is in the second PGR 2 which is the reason why i gave it a 3/5.

Summary: a fantastic game if you're into SERIOUS (well relatively so) simulation racing. This is NOT the type of game that you can just jump into and be successful. You have to practice and train. The graphics and game play are seriously good for a console game. Personally, having a background with games like Grand Prix Legends on the PC, this game can be difficult to master. However, like other racing simulators, when you finally have a good handle on driving, the realism if awesome... you really feel a sense of accomplishment.

Pros: great game play, realistic physics model (the cars feel and drive differently), on-line playing is very rewarding, and challenging (provided you not racing against a bunch of kids that can't control their car well enough to avoid crashing into everybody all the time).

Cons: This game, like any simulator that tries to present a realistic physics model, has a steep learning curve, and some people may find it impossible or at the very least frustrating. To be successful at the game you'll need to understand some basic / advanced racing principles (drifting, hitting corner apex, proper use of throttle, and brakes, drafting, etc.)
