The Return Of Fox McCloud

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 51 / 63

Nintendo has always found so many creative ways to revamp a lot of their classic games to the maximum. That definitely hits the mark very well most of the time. Back in 1997, when Nintendo 64 was popular, and with so many games to take it to the limit, Star Fox 64 was the most revolutionary game not just for the system, but defined the feel of vibrations that made you feel the game, thanks to the N64 Rumble Pak. Yet, Nintendo has tried to make lightning strike twice for the Star Fox franchise for quite sometime. They've tried it a few years ago with Star Fox Adventures, fairly well, and now it is about to be done all over again.

Star Fox Assault, the latest game in the Star Fox series goes through ten outrageous missions that take you on foot, in the air with the arwing, and in the tough landmaster tank. The story of the game deals with Fox McCloud and his team who try to destroy the plague of aparoids trying to destroy Corneria, Fortuna, the dinosaur planet from Star Fox Adventures Sauria, and so many other outrageous galaxies in the way. The graphics and storylines are remarkably delightful, and maintain to the game far beyond the previous Star Fox games.

The gameplay is great, but there are a few downsides to the game. One of them is the control of the game, especially on foot. If you haven't played Star Fox Adventures, it might be a little tricky at first to control Fox, Slippy, Krystal and Falco on foot in versus mode, and Fox in the story mode. However, it gets a lot easier along the way. Another disadvantage is that the methods of defeating some of the bosses in the game are ways of defeating similar bosses from Star Fox 64. One example is the Pigma aparoid in Level 5: The Asteroid Belt. The method of defeating him is a similar method of defeating the Area 6 boss from Star Fox 64. So for some, it does lack a few challenges here and there.

Overall, Star Fox Assault is a very delightful addition to the Nintendo Gamecube lineup, and is a joy for longtime fans of the Star Fox Series. I honestly recommend this for truly dynamic sci-fi Fox action. This is no aparoid of a lie.

Much Better Than I Expected

Don't let this game fly under your radar. It turned out to be much better than I was expecting when I bought it.

Pros:
-PHENOMENAL flying missions with a very fast-paced, "arcadey" feel and very tight controls
-Great "run-n'-gun" action with various weapons
-Multiple control schemes (Personally, I prefer #2)
-Excellent FMV sequences between levels
-Multiple difficulty levels
-Fun multi-player modes with a lot of rule customization options

Cons:
-The game is too short overall. Multiplayer and harder difficulty modes do help this, though.
-You have to switch weapons on-the-fly; you can't do it from the pause menu
-The controls of the Landmaster tank are slightly annoying until you get used to them.

An interesting twist

This game is very fun. When you play Vs. mode, you can't help but wish that there would be a co-op mode with up to three other friends so you can set up a plan against the enemy in Story mode. I hate the music in Vs. mode, but it is still a fun game. You can even hijack an Arwing or ride on an opponents wing. Also, when in an Arwing, you can get out, and ride on top of it. In story mode, it still has the great Arwing action like in the N64. Here how I rate it:

Completely Missed The Mark

When I bought this game, I was skeptical... but it was strange because even the guy at the counter told me that it was getting "kick ass" reviews. I took his word for it simply because I had always been a huge star fox fan. Even while reading all the reviews on this board, I've noticed that people geniunly find this game to be enjoyable. That was simply not the case for me... but I guess that all depends on what perspective you look at this game.

The "Already A Star Fox Fan" perspective:
So you've played all the other star fox games. You loved the SNES installment, and the 64 version blew you away. Well, all I can say is that dont play assault expecting very much, especially if you're looking for action in the form of arwing missions. As you undoubtedly already know, this game gives the option of playing in the arwing, the landmaster, or on foot. The ground based missions are horribly repetitive, each giving you the same "destroy this many targets" objective. For me, I found the on foot, and landmaster missions to basically go hand in hand... which equals Lame. The arwing missions are somewhat pleasant. They have good lenth, but its tough just focusing on those few flying missions and saying "wow what a fun game" without thinking about what a scar the other missions leave on it.

The mulitplayer experience, however... is an upgrade. Quite an upgrade in fact. To many peoples joy, you even get to play in the wolfen in this game. On foot, there are plenty of weapons to keep you busy, and the maps themselves deserve a thumbs up as far as design. If anything, the multiplayer experience will keep you busier than the main game since there are a bunch of levels and extra modes for you to unlock. It may seem odd for a star fox game, but you could buy this game just for the multiplayer and actually get more enjoyment out of that.

The "Never Played StarFox Before" perspective:
This is a tough one. If you like space themed fighting and other sort of "out of this world" sci fi stuff such as bugs invading your solar system and trying to wipe you out, then you might like this game. If you're under 10. It odd, but when I play this game I just get this vibe that its for little kids. I mean everything from the music, to the voice acting, to the visuals just makes me think "saturday morning cartoon rip off". I know this isnt much a review for someone who has never played these games, but what can I say? I've played them all, it would be tough to put something like that into perspective. But hey, at least you would enjoy the multiplayer.

BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game rocks! It's a great continuation of the StarFox 64 game. However, unlike Star Fox 64, there are fewer on-rails missions (i.e you fly the arwing on a preset path). There are 3 aspects to this game: on foot, in a landmaster, or in an arwing. The on foot is extremely fun, although you'll find that the characters move too fast for manuevering in tight spaces. There are TONS of different guns, most of which are insanely powerful. Also you can jump, and roll left and right.
The landmaster is not as fun as the on-foot or Arwing missions, but still, it's useful for anti-aircraft times in multiplayer, or even single player. Instead of that weird machine laser plasma ball thing in Starfox 64, the gun on the Landmaster is a cannon, which suprisingly good against Arwings. It moves pretty slow, which isn't useful in the chaotic, fast-paced multi-player.
At last. The Arwing. This HAS to be the MOST FUN aspect of the game. The Arwing looks a lot better. It still has the twin and then hyper laser upgrades, but one better thing is that you don't have to collect two one-level-up upgrades, but instead you can get a two-level-up upgrade. Very useful in single player and muliplayer. You also ride on the wings of teammates in single player, which happens to be extraordianrily fun.
Single Player doesn't have a very appealing storyline, but it's still fairly well done. Basically, you go around and kill these Aparoids, bug like creatures that can take over machines (except your arwing & landmaster). The missions are pretty simplistic, but still extremely intense, even on Bronze level.
Now Multiplayer is the reason to buy this game. It rivals Halo and Timesplitters. With huge maps and weapons everywhere, the multiplayer is awesome. And that's without the billions of things you can unlock (which I won't tell because they're so awesome ;p). And one of the best things is that you can ride on top of someone's arwing while they're flying it. Or, if it's just 2 vs match, then you can get out of it while it's in the air, and shoot people on the ground. Sadly, there's no capture the flag or other styles; only deathmatch and team deathmatch.
So to end, the graphics of this game are average, obviously an improvement from SF64. The sound is superb. Excellent remixes of previous Sf64 songs bring nonstalgia to veterans of the Sf64 series. Remember, get this game, don't rent it.

If only $60... offer $20 more!!!

Star fox is one of the best games i've played this year. (I've played around 55 games so far). The graphics are 5 out of 5, the realistic level : 4 out of 5, storyline: 4 out of 5 and unlock features: 5 out of 5. The story starts off as general pepper calls the star fox team for help as they are being attacked by the remainders of Andeross's army. Star fox comes in and attacks 'em all. Next fox is attacked by some weird creature (an aparoid as you find out later)these aparoids are invading the lilat system, the only team that can take these rapidly reproducing robots is non other than the star fox team.

Even when you beat the game there are 2 other difficulty levels that the game can be beat on. Didn't do as well as you hoped on 1 of the levels? That's ok, go to the mission menu and restart that mission! Think you've mastered the game? Time to rethink, select survival mode and beat the entire game with 3 lives without saving! Another cool thing on this game is the multiplayer. On the 64 version you had to be one character. The gamecube version allows you to be falco, fox, crystal or slippy each with their own strength. You can be in an arwing, a tank or even on the ground as the piolet himself. Also the # of times you do multiplayer decides how many things you unlock. You even unlock things after 200 multiplayer games. You can unlock differnt piolets, machines, guns, levels etc.
Anyway, great game please consider it.

Not bad, but could have been better.

I just got this game today. After playing it a while here's what I can say about it:

CONS:
-I've read a lot about how Fox is hard to control on foot. I don't think this is true at all. The landmaster is a bit clumsy, but controlling fox on foot is really straightforward and easy.
-It's the PHYSICS that make the ground combat pretty boring. Real arcady feel, poor physics with stuff like Fox jumping 10 feet in the air and when falling from 10 stories up doesn't even flinch. He jumps at the speed of light too, not very convincing.
-The landmaster has believable physics but is hard to control.
-Your allies are completely useless and exactly the same as the other games...they'll do nothing but call for help and if you don't they'll slowly get hit until they die. Why couldn't they make them actualy do something and be able to help for real?
-Voice acting sounds like it was directed at 5 year olds: If you need to go somewhere or hit a boss in a certain place, they'll remind you that like 20 times in the exact same voice while you're trying to kill it. Perhaps they are too busy directing you to where to go and what to do to actually help you fight stuff!
-Pretty dumb that as soon as your landmaster or arwing dies, you're on foot but a new identical vehicle magically "beams" beside you...unrealistic and makes it TOO easy to beat the bad guys.
-Enemies are as predictable and dumb as ever, absolutely no extra work seemed to go into the AI since the last version.

PROS:
-cool that you can get into the arwing, landmaster, and foot on command
-nice graphics and super smooth when in the arwing, feel less so on foot...actually the graphics can be exceptional at times
-Arwing control is smooth...even though i'm still getting used to it, I can't wait to master it for multiplayer.
-Good selection of weapons when on foot

Stuff that would have earned 5 stars:
-Cooperative story mode (so you allies are actually useful)
-Online multiplayer
-More arwing levels, or at least give you the option to fly one in most ground missions.
-less annoying and redundant voice acting
-better A.I.

Overall, it feels slightly rushed, and could have been a better game. If you can get over the annoying voices, bad AI and ground physics and kiddish feel though, it has some great graphics and is fun to play. Although I haven't played multiplayer yet, I'm sure that's where the real fun would be (after you play through single player to unlock all the extras of course).

Best Starfox yet

I just bought this game and it is a boat load of fun. Please don't listen to the reviewers who said it sucked, it would be a big mistake, instead rent it and decide for yourself. If you want my opinion it's one of nintendo's bests, and if you want to play a game with blood and gore(many people complained about the abscence of such things) buy an xbox, but for those of the younger players who want a shoot em up game without all the violence this is perfect, even for adults.

Very good, but not as good as I thought

Star Fox Assault is a very good game. After avoiding disaster on Dinosaur Planet, a new threat has been detected and is rapidly spreading across the Lylat System. The Star Fox team has been asked to destroy this threat. Fox McCloud, Slippy Toad, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Krystal combine to form Team Star Fox.

Story Mode: The main mode in Star Fox: Assault is Story mode. You can choose to play on Bronze, Silver, or Gold difficulties. There are 10 missions to complete. However, it only takes a couple hours to defeat, making it too short. The three modes of transportation are Arwing, Landmaster, and On-foot. The Arwing controls are good, the Landmaster controls are pretty good, but not as good as the Arwing, and the On-foot controls can be a bit frustrating. Certain actions, such as turning around and moving backward are slow and can be frustrating. Also, in most of the missions, you can move all around and use different modes of transportation instead of just moving forward. As you beat certain missions, you'll unlock them for play in multiplayer. You'll also unlock other things for multiplayer by playing story mode. If you beat story mode, you can go back and play each individual mission and get better scores. You can also play survival mode, which is story mode without any saving. In addition to that, you can unlock a game called Xevious. It's a classic shooting game by Namco, and can be unlocked by collecting all the silver badges, and accessed by going to the main menu and going to the Bonus Game tab.

Vs. Mode: The Vs. mode is pretty good. 2-4 players can choose teams, characters, a set of rules, weapons, a battlefield, and modes of transportation. Many things can be unlocked by completing a certain amount of Vs. Mode games, such as weapons, stages, and the Wolfen (the vehicle that Team Star Wolf uses). The only thing I don't like about Vs. Mode is that you can't play against computer players. If that was possible, I'd play it all the time.

Many people were disappointed though. Many people were expecting a game with almost all missions using the Arwing, just like Star Fox 64. Instead, you have to use the Landmaster and go on-foot sometimes. I think that it was good that Namco mixed it up a bit. I would have liked the game better if it had more than 10 missions. It only took me a short time to beat it on two difficulties, and almost everyone would like more missions with Arwings.

Overall, I think that Star Fox: Assault is a great game.

Star Fox Assault:What Star fox fans wanted?

This game consists of being a Pilot,In an Arwing,And in a Landmaster.BUT!Star fox fans[like me]Are intersested in only Arwing Missions. And maybe some Landmaster ones. With the last SF game we experianced on-foot 94% of the time. But fans STILL loved that game because it was longer. This game has 10 missions.4 of which you are ONLY in an Arwing. If we had like maybe more missions with half of those missions being Arwing only missions then people would stop saying that it isn't like other Star Fox games.
Anyway this is a fun game.An AWSOME multi-player.And the controls are good. The Graphics I would say on some missions could be better but other wise they are good. The sound is awsome.Especially the levels with the Star Fox theme[2].
Over all I rate it ****[Four stars]
