Someone had to do it.

I was looking at some of the GC titles I own and thinking, "wow, they really screwed that game up," when it occurred to me that Star Fox Assault is probably the best (as in worst game ever!) example of this. So I strolled over to Amazon.com to see if I was alone. Phew, loads of people agree with me, however, everyone needs to stop giving Nintendo points for trying. This is a ONE star game. (The only reason I gave it two stars for fun is because I owned Infiltrator for the original NES, I know what ONE star fun is!)

The second you see Fox standing there with his pistol, the ONE star light should come on. If I wanted to see Fox running around, I would have bought that stupid Star Fox Adventures game. (P.S. Star Fox Adventures fans, grow up and get Halo on X-Box.)

Everything said by those reviewers who gave this game two stars is completely true. (Except the two star part.) Give me an Arwing or give Star Fox death.

The Black Sheep of the StarFox Series

After Star Fox "Adventures" came out, it was very obvious that The StarFox series had come to a rather sucky end. But when commercials came out for an upcoming StarFox game, it seemed like the new game would bring back the great StarFox gameplay of StarFox 64. Rather than doing that, Assault brought pretty much the opposite.

When I first turned on the game, the 1st level began as a sequence with some army of ships battling another army of ships. Then, The Great Fox suddenly flies through a big green circle to save the day, I guess. The Team, like in 64, runs thru a long hall to their ships. When Slippy gets on his Arwing, (I guess Namco thought this would be "funny") he lands on his head. When I finally got to play, the first flaw I noticed was that there was no Peppy flying with me. Instead, he was replaced with a blue-fox thingy named Krystal who does absolutely nothing to help you on the mission. Peppy, on the other hand, sits back in the great fox and yells commands. Fox, our valiant hero, now looks like a little kitty with sharp teeth and an Ash Ketchum voice. Another flaw is that annoying, high-pitched, crackly voice everyone calls "Oikany". Really, it's Andrew avenging Uncle Andross's death. At the end of the first level, you fight him in a pathetically easy boss battle. Once you kill Oikany, he defiles that awesome "uncle Andross!!!" line, then just dies. Suddenly, "Aparoids" begin to take over the Lylat System.
What are Aparoids? Probably the most generic enemy you have to fight in the whole series. They look like giant robotic aliens and bugs (How very, very original).
The level after that is the first on-foot shooting mission-and the controls are just plain annoying. If you want to aim anywhere else besides right in front of you, you need to hold the R button down and aim with the control stick. While doing that, you can't move around to dodge the enemy's shots, so expect this to be a frustrating experience. You can switch to "dual stick" controls (Where you use both analog sticks), but they are so sensitive and hard to master, I just stuck with the default. When you get into the tank, it's no different. And each level on-foot consists of the same set of enemies, on a piece of land that's usually floating. The weapons in on-foot mode are barley audible from the explosions and music, plus they just sound like little water guns. If you run out of ammo in all of your weapons, you have to play with the sucky blaster you start with.
What else? There are 10 missions. Only 4 of them are flying levels, and only 2 (besides the last level) have the classic forward-scroll-shooting gameplay. And the landmaster gameplay isn't as fun as in StarFox 64. If you can get a plane on a ground level, the only purpose of it is to shoot one or two enemies down in the sky that your allies are too foolhardy to take down. When your useless wingmates whine about an enemy on their tail, you'll also have to waste your time with that. Yet, believe it or not, I was almost somewhat entertained, until I beat the game after two days - that's right, two (2) days. A good game would take at least a week to beat on its easiest mode, but two days on bronze?
And the ending wasn't so promising either. Before the final mission,(SPOILER WARNING) Peppy crashes the Great Fox through the shield blocking Team StarFox from getting thru to the base, and Dies.
Then the poser team Star Wolf gives you a hand - yes, I almost forgot. The diabolical Brit Wolf with his challenging team have now been made into a poser American-accented pussie with a low-witted twosome who want to HELP you. That's right, his team attacks you in the third mission, but then joins your side in Corneria (Which is sadly not a flying level like in 64) for no reason. What the crap were Nintendo & Namco thinking??????!!!!??!!
In the last mission, Wolf also dies, while you head on to the Aparoid queen, who is a big, robotic alien. The Queen imitates Peppy, General Pepper, and Fox's dad, but the team, unfortunately, doesn't give in. After defeating the somewhat challenging boss, Fox states the LAMEST "inspirational" speech ever. After the credits (SPOILER) everyone who has died somehow comes back to life.
And there's more. The music is mostly from 64, but the classic soundtracks (such as the Star Wolf theme) are turned into slow, calm orchestral pieces. In the multiplayer mode, the music is just friggin smooth lounge music that doesn't fit in at all with the battle. The intensity of the game is taken away not only by that factor, but the simple fact that all the arwings fly slower, and enemies are easier to hit. What a kiddie game this is, despite in the Teen rating for "Fantasy Violence."
The only reason I played this game for weeks was to unlock "Xevious", an old-school, challenging, and fun mini-game by Namco. To unlock it, I had to get all silver metals on all the levels, which was only frustrating and repetitive. This cool bonus game still doesn't make up for all the screw-ups Namco made.
To sum up all this, StarFox ASSault just brings great pity to the StarFox name. If you are the truest StarFox fan of them all, this is no game for you or your gaming buddies. How did StarFox become so sucky? My theory is Krystal - if Rare hadn't combined the upcoming release of Dinosaur Planet with StarFox charactors, the Series' destiny would've been more promising. Overall, I'd prefer blowing my money on Super Mario Sunshine.

Not bad, but could have been better.

I just got this game today. After playing it a while here's what I can say about it:

CONS:
-I've read a lot about how Fox is hard to control on foot. I don't think this is true at all. The landmaster is a bit clumsy, but controlling fox on foot is really straightforward and easy.
-It's the PHYSICS that make the ground combat pretty boring. Real arcady feel, poor physics with stuff like Fox jumping 10 feet in the air and when falling from 10 stories up doesn't even flinch. He jumps at the speed of light too, not very convincing.
-The landmaster has believable physics but is hard to control.
-Your allies are completely useless and exactly the same as the other games...they'll do nothing but call for help and if you don't they'll slowly get hit until they die. Why couldn't they make them actualy do something and be able to help for real?
-Voice acting sounds like it was directed at 5 year olds: If you need to go somewhere or hit a boss in a certain place, they'll remind you that like 20 times in the exact same voice while you're trying to kill it. Perhaps they are too busy directing you to where to go and what to do to actually help you fight stuff!
-Pretty dumb that as soon as your landmaster or arwing dies, you're on foot but a new identical vehicle magically "beams" beside you...unrealistic and makes it TOO easy to beat the bad guys.
-Enemies are as predictable and dumb as ever, absolutely no extra work seemed to go into the AI since the last version.

PROS:
-cool that you can get into the arwing, landmaster, and foot on command
-nice graphics and super smooth when in the arwing, feel less so on foot...actually the graphics can be exceptional at times
-Arwing control is smooth...even though i'm still getting used to it, I can't wait to master it for multiplayer.
-Good selection of weapons when on foot

Stuff that would have earned 5 stars:
-Cooperative story mode (so you allies are actually useful)
-Online multiplayer
-More arwing levels, or at least give you the option to fly one in most ground missions.
-less annoying and redundant voice acting
-better A.I.

Overall, it feels slightly rushed, and could have been a better game. If you can get over the annoying voices, bad AI and ground physics and kiddish feel though, it has some great graphics and is fun to play. Although I haven't played multiplayer yet, I'm sure that's where the real fun would be (after you play through single player to unlock all the extras of course).

SOOOO Disappointing

Wow, if you are a fan of previous Star Fox video games (not including the horrendous "Star Fox Adventures" that was one of the first releases for the Gamecube) I have bad news for you...

The newest addition to the series, Star Fox: Assault, is a huge disappointment. It is horrible. SOOOOOOO bad. I looked forward to this game so much, and now I play it, literally had to force myself just to continue and cling to the hope that it could get better. But it never did get better. In fact, I think it is safe to say the game goes steadily downhill after you defeat the first boss. Well, maybe not so steady, the "fun" of the game completely disappears the third or fourth time you have to wander around on foot and destroy some variation of "shield generator". I am not going to get too much further into that in this format though. I want to make a list of all the reasons this game is horrible.

1) of the 10 levels I played through, there were only 3 where you spent the majority of the time in your plane. The rest of the time you spent performing tedious tasks on foot or in the "Landmaster" on the horribly designed ground levels. Each time you are on foot you start with one of the crappiest guns I have ever used in a video game. It cannot kill anything in one shot, has a painfully slow rate of fire, and an even slower charge up time (the enemies that only take damage from charged shots fire at a much faster rate). This could be solved by a handful of things. A) if the controls allowed you to dodge, charge your gun and aim at the same time. Most console shooters incorporate a 2-stick control system (like that in Halo or Timesplitters). If you want 2-stick control in this game, you have to adjust to wacked out control in your plane. By wacked out I mean it makes you control the plane with one stick and the camera with the other. This is just stupid. The one stick control leads to several control problems. I'll get to that in a minute. B) easily obtained weapon upgrades. Not only are new guns (machine gun, grenades etc.) scarce, but once you find one, they have limited ammunition. AND switching between them is a pain (using c-stick to change weapons!?!?). It also annoyed me that you do not get to hold onto your guns from level to level. The design of the foot levels is almost too bad to describe with words. Everything is camoflauged. It is very difficult to distinguish enemies, doors and important items from the surrounding area. enemies aren't too bad in this case, because they show up on your radar. But you are not given a map to any of these levels, so finding doors, and knowing where to go next is a huge pain in the ass. AND as if the ground levels could get any worse, the developers some how managed to ruin the "Landmaster". The "Landmaster" is a tank that was introduced in Star Fox 64. It offered a nice change of pace in that game, requiring quick side to side movement and well planned hops to clear obstacles. In this game not only is the "Landmaster" lethargic (it was very fast on the 64), but the hovering and rolling abilities are rarely needed (the dodging that required these moves in the 64 game is what made the landmaster fun). There is really no need to have the Landmaster in this game. This is the last thing I will say about the ground levels. While you are running around on foot with your crappy gun, with the rest of the Star Fox team flying around above you, they STILL request back up from you. They expect that you will be able to land multiple shots on multiple enemies at great distance while dealing with the phantom enemies that appear out of nowhere on the ground. This requires you to go into "aim mode", you cannot move while you are aiming, lead one of the 3-5 enemies tailing your friend, and land at least several shots from your pistol on each one within approximately 60 seconds of the original distress signal. After scrambling (and failing miserably) the first time this happened, I decided to let my team mates "die", because unlike in the other games, where you were punished for this and your team mates actually made a difference, your team mates never appear to do anything helpful in this game and return for the next mission no matter what.

2) The Controls are horrible. I touched on this a little in the previous gripe. But I still can't believe just how bad they are. You cannot assign the buttons however you want to. You have 3-schemes to choose from. One is good for the plane, but horrible for the foot/Landmaster portions of the game. The second one is good for the foot and landmaster portions, but is terrible for the plane portions. The third one is horrible for everything... I really don't know why they included it, it is needlessly complicated. The challenge of a game should not be adjusting to the control scheme. They could have saved all of this trouble and restricted the game play to the plane... I think everyone (myself and any respectable star fox fan) would have been just fine with that.

3) The story is poorly written. The old star fox games did not have great stories, but they made up for this by ignoring the story element of the game. This game tries to push the story as important, and implies relationships between various characters, which isn't a bad thing to do, it is just executed poorly in this game. Most of the voice acting is second rate at best. Falco turned is no longer a cocky rebel with a quick tongue, but a mellow "surfer dude" with an annoying attitude. The girl fox never really proves that she serves a purpose other than weak attempts to seduce Fox. Fox's voice switches between a Keanu Reeve's type effect where he sounds perpetually lost, and an over anxious "I have done this a million times before I can't die I am the hero" voice. Which is annoying because in the SNES and 64 games he always came off as someone who is humble, but actively seeking revenge. Oh, and Slippy is more homosexual than ever before. All the new enemies suck too. And I won't even get into the whole mess of a story where you team up with the "Star Wolf" team more often than you fight them...

4) Ok, so running around on foot sucks, driving the landmaster sucks, I would have thought they would at least salvage the Arwing portions of play. I mean it shouldn't be too hard, there are only 3 levels that are exclusive to the Arwing. Well... the flying sucks too. It is slower. You turn slower. You can't do the useful "turn on one side" move to get through tight spots which makes the Arwings width a huge burden. Whenever you "spin" to deflect enemy shots it makes this huge engine blast that prevents you from seeing anything happening ahead of you. The "rail" portions of the level are plagued by the stage moving into your plane and enemies flying into the back of your ship (possibly the most frustrating part of the game). The "free" portions are hurt by the speed of the Arwing (so sloooooooooow) and large, stationary ships cluttering up the battlefield (ally calls for help and they are on the other side of a huge ship, there is no way to get there in time, especially when your radar gives you no idea of how much distance is between the two of you). You also start with no bombs, and do not retain the upgrades you find in the levels, as you did in the previous games. This is very annoying in this game because the upgrades and pickups are very scarce, so you spend most of the plane levels with a crappy single laser (this sounds familiar...). On top of all of this, the flying bosses seem recycled and old. For example, the first boss is identical to Andross (main boss in the SNES and 64 versions). While I'm on the topic of bosses, they are all very easy. Not only easy to kill, but easy to figure out. No thinking required here.

5) The radar is barely helpful. In previous Star Fox games, radar was only used in "free" flight periods of the game. When it was used though, it showed you EVERYTHING. So you knew the direction and had an idea of the distance between yourself and friends and foes. The area it displays now barely extends past your plane/landmaster/self. So you have lots of colored dots lining the perimeter of your radar... this is not very helpful when an ally cries for help...

6) This may sound stupid, but it annoyed me that Peppy is no longer one of the Star Fox pilots. He has been replaced by the blue fox thing that you rescue in Star Fox Adventures. He is still in the game, but hangs out in the Great Fox and *SPOILER* he dies. Or at least he appeared to have killed himself at the point in the game that I stopped playing because it was killing me to see one of my favorite game franchises perverted like this.

There are probably more things that I have missed. This game is unbelievably bad. I quit playing on what I am pretty sure is the last level because I was fed up with enemies flying into the back of my ship (in the "rail" portions of this game it is impossible to prevent this), and my best efforts being wasted by the stage shifting into my ship when I would turn at high speeds (it felt like the game was having to catch up to me). I don't know why they (developers) keep tampering with this game. Star Fox is not complicated. Make enemies fly through in patterns, award points for shooting them down, have the stage collapse/change in front of you in time for you to get an idea of the pattern the gates will close, but quick enough so you will be forced to make choices (left or right, up or down, boost or break, flip on your side or stay flat). It isn't hard... it isn't even that complicated. Grounding me, Fox McCloud, leader of the Star Fox team, makes no sense at all. The game is called STAR Fox. Not RUN AROUND AND COLLECT STUFF Fox, or SHOOT BUGS WITH A SISSY PISTOL Fox, or LAND LOCKED DESTROYER OF FORCE FIELDS Fox. It is STAR Fox. STAR, like the things you find in outter space. A game with such an obvious name should not be spent running around searching for alien spawn points.

Despite the ridiculous controls, this game was still very easy, which just adds to the poor quality. Bad story, horrible gameplay, really easy. I will give one of the other control schemes another run tomorrow... But I doubt that will change anything. This game sucks. I am going to email Nintendo and complain, tell them how they are killing one of their best franchises... not really. But it is true. I should have known by the disgusting remixed theme song that played at the openning screen that this would be a disgusting remixed version of the first 3D game I ever played (going back to play the SNES Star Fox and remembering how its graphics were once revelutionary... wow, progress is funny).

Bitter disappointment.

What a let-down this game is. Seriously, is it too much to ask for a solid flying game like Star Fox 64 was? I mean getting out and walking around shooting things is great and all, but this is a STAR FOX game, and the last thing I would buy a Star Fox game for is to run around and blow things up, especially when there are other games out there that fulfill that type of game play so much better. I was expecting the bulk of this game to be spent flying around in an R-Wing....boy was I wrong.

Do yourself a favor if you've never bought a Star Fox game before, go to a pawn shop, get a N64 and buy Star Fox 64. You'll thank me when it's over.

Boy was this bad!!!!!!

This game was one of the most anticipated titles for Gamecube since it was announced in 2003. But it was delayed. And Now that it's FINALLY out, it was definetely not worth the money. The graphics are really good, and the music is really entertaining, but besides that it's terrible. The story is one of the worst I've ever seen in a video game. The voice acting is monotonous and all sounds like the actors are reading straight off the script, and just saying the words. But the biggest problem is the terrible controls. The landmaster tank is impossible to drive, and Fox can't even turn around well. This game has some okay rail flying missions, but the areas you fly in are too small to move away from things you can fly into. I loved Star Fox 64 on the N64, and hated Star Fox Adventures. There have been no good Star Fox games since 1997. If this series wants to continue, there needs to be a good game. If there isn't, no more Star Fox games will be made.

a huge disspointment

for star fox fans, this is not your game. Star Fox on the N64 just had tank and flying and thats what we wanted. But when i got Star fox 64 i wanted foot missions, now that I got them, i have to face the fact that it sucks. The flying missions are great and fun and so are the tank missions. But then u go to a foot mission and the action is stopped by the controls of the onfoot missions. Its a good thing that there arent a lot of on foot missions. People dont buy this game. RENT IT! 100s of games to rent or buy just rent this

No respect for Starfox, again

I'm never going to pre-order a game 6 months before it comes out ever again. Because every time I do, they stink. Nintendo/Namco whoever ALMOST got it right this time, ALMOST. Before I begin, STAR FOX is the team's name, not the fox's name. He is Fox McCloud. I don't know why some people seem to think his name is "Star fox." Also, the Arwing IS NOT A PLANE. Sorry, but I take Starfox quite seriously...
Ok, first off, I was shocked when I first played Starfox Assault, because it was looking real good. It seems they atleast tried to make a story this time, they finally got rid of a few of the lame characters, and most importantly, Wolf and Krystal are back. The action is really good at times and some of the levels are huge. There's lots of stuff to shoot at... and that's it, basically you just shoot stuff so the only real difficulty is how fast you can press the A button. After about 2 hours I was really getting into it, then, BAM - it's over..... 10 levels... TEN LEVELS folks! I'm sorry but that ain't going to cut it. I've had it 2 and a half days and already beat it 5 times. Starfox Adventures is many times longer than Assault, and I had that beat in about 15 hours. You'll be lucky to spend 15 hours total playing Assault, including re-playing and multiplayer, before you put it on the shelf for good. Next, the acting. I didn't recognize anyone from Starfox Adventures, but atleast the actors in that sounded as if they cared a slight bit about their job. The actors in Assault are HORRIBLE! You do not talk in the same tone in all situations. If I'm on the toilet, I'm going to use a different tone than if I'm being shot at. And I don't know how this is possible, but I'm actually tired of hearing Krystal talk. How and why does a blue vixen from space have a British accent? I'm not buying the accent, it just ain't happening. She didn't have it in Adventures. And the others spout off the same 2 lines about 15 times a minute. Try jumping over the wall in the second level and you will hear Peppy say the same thing 36 times in under 5 minutes. I'd sit for hours in Starfox 64 just hearing Wolf's actor say "what, is that all you got?" like he was atleast trying. But his actor in Assault sounds like he's not even being paid. Seriously, this acting is bad. I prefer the "voices" from the SNES Starfox than these guys. The graphics are great, as usual. Its for GC so the graphics will be great. But still, the characters look bad. Even Wolf looks bad, he looks like he's wearing shoulder pads or something. Krystal and Fox are the only ones that look half-decent. Peppy's head looks like an egg. And everyone elses head looks all squeezed up. The musics decent, but gets annoying real fast. There is no difficulty at all, just aim and shoot. The controls are irritating too. There's 7 buttons and only 2 or 3 do anything. Controlling Fox while on the ground is about the only difficult part of the game. Also, they took away several moves from the Arwing and Landmaster, and for what reason I have no idea. Anyways I understand Nintendo/Namco, whoever SF belongs to now, still sees Starfox as a kiddy game, so I guess I shouldn't have expected too much. It's still a good game (for 2 hours) but you probably won't want to play through it more than a few times. Adventures is a lot better, and SF64 is still a heck of a lot better. They tried with Assault, but just didn't wrap it up. Starfox has so much potential too, I hate to see these sloppy attempts at a game. I would've given it a 1, but since Krystal and Wolf are in it (extremely smart move bringing Wolf back, even if it was for all of 15 minutes) I'll give it a 2. Assault's still a decent game.

If I had it my way, I'd trash everyone but Wolf, Krystal and Fox and start SF over, having them all on the same team. But that ain't gonna happen so I guess I'll have to wait another 5 years for the next Starfox, which will probably be worse than this, and which will probably not even have Wolf, and all the characters will probably be upwards of 60 years old. Sly Cooper is slowly beginning to replace Fox McCloud as my favorite video game fur.

This game could have been so much better. The game was far to short, to much running instead of flying, and bad voice acting. The main reason I rented this game was to have that old star fox 64 feel. The times it did have that feel it didn't last near long enough. I would recomend this game to kids that like the series. But for adults, just stick to star fox 64.

Okay
