Great fun

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4

It is a good game in its own right. It adds much more ground based action (on foot or in the landmaster tank) than its direct predecessor Star Fox 64. I would have liked more of the traditional space battles but all aspects of the game are done well especially the space/flight levels but the others are fun as well. I did not find the controls to be an issue as some other reviewers have and for its price (now under $20) its even better.

Overall good, but slightly disappointing

Now don't get me wrong. This game is really, really fun to play. It's quite a blast to go about with Fox on the ground and pick off enemies with sniper rifles and rocket launchers. The graphics are excellent, the gameplay is very arcady, and once you're used to the controls they're easy to use. Sound is also top notch. All the fundamentals rank right up there with the other Star Fox games.

Now for it's differences (and in my opinion faults). First of all you only get 10 levels. While they are longer than normal (8 min+ average) this still allows an average gamer to finish it in one night. Also, it differs from other Star Fox flyers in that there are no different paths to follow. You have to go thru every level in that order, and I missed switching routes and having varying campaigns. That being said, the game still has plenty of replay value, since you can get medals at all 3 difficulty levels, and there are 5 secret flags to find on each level.

Lastly, the versus mode isn't quite as good as Star Fox 64. Instead of dogfighting you have simple fly, auto-aim, and shoot, but the ground-based versus is pretty good. If you're a huge fan of Star Fox, you'll want to buy this game, but if you're anything less, I highly recommend you rent it first to see if you're willing to invest 50 bucks.

Fun game, but disappointing story mode

I do agree with most of these people that this is like the halo for gamecube. The game was a bit of a disappointment to me though. Single player mode sucked. The voices weren't done very well, they weren't very enthusiastic about when they reminded me about the weak point of that easy boss, and the whole story sucked. It didn't even make sense. They would say the same line over and over and over and over again until you just want to beat them up. And you save them way more than they save you. You save their life, and they give you a stupid bomb. The multiplayer mode though was no disappointment. It was done very well and I liked how you unlocked stuff. The more matches, the more fun. And you feel very happy when it's a neck to neck match and you finally shoot your opponent to their doom. There was a wide enough variety of weapons to be able to have differnet strategies. And the graphics are beautifully done. I recommend this game to people who like multiplayer games, but definetly not to those of you who play story mode all the time.

Surprisingly Addictive

I had read a lot of reviews from different magazines and websites, and they all said that this game was going to be pretty average, with an average rating of about a 3 out of 5. I decided to buy this game any way because I am a StarFox fan (and I kick butt with him in Super Smash Bros.).
Boy, am I glad I did. This game is super addictive. Especially the multiplayer, but more on that later. To focus on the single player mode, it is a easy game. No matter what difficuly setting you put this puppy on, the missions are pretty simple and easy. And unlike a lot of people, I enjoyed the simplicity. It makes the game fun (though I cannot say that about all games). I liked the controls. You have three options to choose from controlwise, and I chose the one named Single Stick control. This controls is similiar to Metroid Prime.
The weapon you start out with (a laser gun) is pretty weak. So if you JUST use this gun, your going to die. Their are lots of weapons to choose from. You may be wondering: what weapons? Isn't this a space ship game? Yes. There are three different types of game play aspects. They are: on foot missions, arwing missions, and landmaster missions. IF I had to choose the weakest of the three, it would have to be the landmaster. And that is only because the other ones are so darn fun. (Okaaay this review is a little longer than I expected) The story is pretty good. Not the best story around, but pretty good for a Nintendo game. The voice acting is OK. I hated Slippy's voice though and I always have (and probably always will).
Ok, now on to multiplayer. This (to me) is the meat of the game. It is a 4 player split screen battle. You and 3 other friends can plug in controllers and duel it out. Trust me, you'll have one heck of a time. It is so darn addictive. You can have certain vehicles (arwing, landmaster) available to you on certain levels. All you have to do is press "Z" and you hop onto your vehicle. So, you have many options. You can take it to the air, keep it on foot, or have your big, powerful landmaster do all the dirty work (the land master can runover someone on foot). And on foot, you have roughly about 12 weapons available to use. Some of the levels in multiplayer are pretty big. My personal faves are the Sauria level and the "just on foot level" in the space station.
The game is not without its faults though. The sound of each boss exploding sounds just like the N64 StarFox. The graphics are good, but look jaggy in some areas. Lastly, it is very hard to see enemies. This is especially a problem in multiplayer mode.
Yes, I'm finally done. I seriously recommend you AT LEAST rent this game. Buy this if you can-just for multiplayer mode. PS2 and XBOX owners miss out on this great game. I hope this review was helpful!

one of the best games ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you liked the other starfox games you're gonna love this one. unlike the first game, you can walk, get in land masters and arwings. peppy is now retired and instead of him is krystal from dinosour island. the game is about these things called aparoids that try to take over the galaxy. team starfox's people are fox, falco, krystal, and slippy. i like slippy in this game more than the other games because he sounds more like a guy, and does more stuff than get killed. the 4 player mode is one of the best 4 player things i've ever played. you could unlock millions of stuff mostly in that mode. the first place i played at was the katani station or something like that. this game is great and you dont even have to rent it, just by it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! okay?

This game is going to rock! YEAH!!!

Fred's Review: 9/10 stars

The fourth in the Satrfox series. In StarFox 64, you battled the armies of Andross and Andross himself. But in this game, you battle the Aparoids to their very own home planet and face the aparoid queen. 10 missions will only last you about 2+ hours and you can't choose multiple paths like you could in the 64 version. The graphics have been upgraded and I didn't find anything wrong with that part. The gameplay is very simple and easy to pickup but parts can become frustrating at times because you have to go all the way back to the checkpoint when you die. Most bosses are quite simple and easy but the Aparoid queen packs quite a punch. I'd give this game's replay value an ok but not great. I wish there were more single player levels. Multi-player is where the real fun comes in. Deathmatches, dog-fights, you name it.
Powerful weapons make it fair when it's Arwing(or Land-Master) versus regular players. Chaotic fun comes in when you or your enemies get powerups and blow you up.
Some characters are rigged like Wolf, he completely beats Fox's stats. Must buy game.

Great Game!

I think this is probally one of the best games I have ever played. It could have more levels but multiplayer is a lot of fun. I like a game that you can unlock stuff on and you can on this game. I would highly reccomend this game.

StarFox Assault is a contender for the best game on Game Cube

StarFox Assault is quite simply the most (as in #1) action packed game on Game Cube and I have played and beaten many action packed games on Game Cube like Resident Evil 4, TimeSplitters Future Perfect, and Medal of Honor European Assault. All of the above games have also achieved greatness. StarFox Assault has three levels of difficulty: Bronze, Silver, or Gold. The single-player game does not last only three hours like so many reviews may suggest. The single-player game lasts more like 10 hours on one difficulty. Those of you who have beaten the game on Bronze have not beaten the game on Silver or Gold. And if you beat it on Gold, then you can choose the option of Gold Survival, in which you have no continues or ability to save the game. Basically, you have to beat the whole game without losing Fox's last life. The graphics, sound, and environments are nothing short of spectacular with absolutely no slowdown in framerate at all. True, while the Landmaster missions are a bit slower than the Arwing missions, they often require more strategy than the Arwing missions. The ground missions by foot are excellent because you have the most diversity in choice of weapons to use during these missions. I especially like the sniper levels. True, Fox can run quite fast and leap really high without a humanly sense of physics, but he is a Fox and he needs to jump that high to get the job done. If that is the only gripe one can find with the game, then that is ridiculous because nearly every game lacks physics in some respect or another. Some of those ground missions get really hectic on Gold and are a lot of fun. Other complaints about StarFox Assault that critics have given are that your allies are useless, while this opinion is not true, your allies frequently do need your help. It is an intentionally installed part of the game. Appreciate its brilliance. The intent is to give you an extra objective to pass in a given amount of time while you are being swarmed by attackers. These events of your allies needing your help arrive at believable times when swarms of attackers are around. It makes things much more challenging for the experienced gamer and those that enjoy challenges because you are being attacked while you are trying to save your allies. Ultimately, you need to be able to eliminate attackers and save your allies at the same time, which is not an easy task. It takes quick reflexes to do so. The game also has pretty good multiplayer options, but they are somewhat of an afterthought after the single-player game is finished. However, this game has much replayability in trying to beat your high scores and collect all the red flags during Arwing missions. StarFox Assault is definitely a game to own if you own a Game Cube and is my favorite game on Game Cube.

Where is the old Starfox we knew?

First off, i would like to say that i really love the old starfox 64, and thats what i'm comparing it to. When i bought Assault, i asusmed Nintendo was trying to go back with the whole arwing/tank theme without the adventuring on foot theme so much. We all thought it would have been cool, but lets face it, its not. This game could have been incredibly better if Nintendo first of all,

1. Took out the on foot missions and just leave the arwing/tank/submarine missions like the old one. I bought this game so i could play the arwing missions. If i wanted to go on foot, I would have bought starfox adventures. Starfox 64 is a classic, so why not stick to the formula? Don't try to fix something thats not broken.

2. Why does this game have to be so corny? I know 64 was not exactly professionally scripted, but this is just way over done. Nintendo needs to understand that there aren't just 8 year olds playing their games. That's what annoys me most about Nintendo. We're not little kids!!!

3. The Music just made me want to turn it off. It sounds pretty much like the music from starfox64, which is fairly decent, but with annoying touches to it. Especially in the multiplayer.

4. Nintendo needed to add a more serious tone to it. It would have made the gameplay, story, and overall look of the game far better. Who the hell likes this corny junk?

But, i need to say that this game is still fairly decent. The Graphics are amazing in the Arwing missions, and the way they play is pretty amazing. Now only if Nintendo would just be smart and just stick to the vehicle gameplay. This game isn't really a bad deal for what its going for now. If you're a fan, buy it, if not, rent it.

Over all, i would give this game a 6 out 10. Not HORRIBLY disappointed but, still, could have been far more amazing.
